I’ve realized my problem is that I cannot navigate modern /lit/. The thing with classics is that everyone studied them in school, and therefore it’s easy to interpolate what every other title is going to be like. With modern /lit/ it could be anything, and recs do not help much because it all depends on the person doing the recommendation. I’ve got a bunch of recs on Reddit recently, but what do I do with them given that it was Redditors who advised them.

insightful article on The New Republic,
https://newrepublic.com/article/215721/trump-basic-laws-human-stupidity-carlo-cipolla

>Trump Personifies the Basic Laws of Human Stupidity
>How a 50-year-old treatise by an Italian economic historian makes sense of our utterly senseless moment

>Fifty years ago, in his most famous work, the prolific intellectual Carlo Cipolla argued that stupid people, as a group, are “much more powerful than the mafia, or the military industrial complex.”

>Today, as we witness one of the dumbest wars in history unraveling in Iran, an inept health and human services secretary working to bring back measles and polio, a Republican Party wherein only 20 percent view the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol as a violent insurrection but 71 percent deny Joe Biden won the 2020 election, and an administration that refuses to properly regulate AI and crypto industries that threaten the economic well-being and safety of all, Cipolla’s contention is as apt now as when he first proposed it in The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity, in 1976—an era when the country, and indeed the world, was similarly roiled by sociopolitical rage and seemed on the brink of a catastrophe.

...

>Cipolla divided people into four groups: the helpless, whose actions harm themselves but benefit others; the intelligent, whose actions benefit themselves and others; the bandits, who enrich themselves while harming others; and the stupid, whose actions harm others while producing no benefit to themselves. This latter group is Cipolla’s main concern. “No matter how high are one’s estimates of human stupidity,” he wrote, “one is repeatedly and recurrently startled by the fact that a) people whom one had once judged rational and intelligent turn out to be unashamedly stupid; b) day after day, with unceasing monotony, one is harassed in one’s activities by stupid individuals who appear suddenly and unexpectedly in the most inconvenient places and at the most improbable moments.”
>>
>>25575140
I had the front tooth done before, but I tore a portion of material off with floss, and it seems to be crumbling into the root. Honestly I’ve been putting that off for months, but now that it crumbles up I’m anxious just enough to make an appointment.
>>
>>25575145
>Undoubtedly, you’re pondering all of the stupid people you know. But the real danger, Cipolla contended, is when stupid people gain power, exponentially increasing the danger to us all. In this scenario, the stupid will have at their disposal means of destruction created by the intelligent—armies, weapons systems, monetary levers, media influence—and will oversee industries often controlled or influenced by bandits, weakening the institutions designed to monitor them. Imagine, if you will, if an extraordinarily stupid man were to somehow become secretary of defense, jeopardizing both our soldiers and our position in the world while also promoting a testosterone-based culture that could damage our forces for years. To avoid this, Cipolla said, it is the job of the intelligent to keep the stupid in check. If they fail to do so, societies head downhill fast.

>Such a fate is not easy to avoid in democracies, which are plagued by the stupid. “Within a democratic system, general elections are a most effective instrument to ensure the steady maintenance of [stupid people] among the powerful,” Cipolla wrote. This is because politicians often have to appeal to the stupid in order to maintain power, ensuring that stupid politicians will always make up a fraction of government officials.

>We cannot say for sure what Cipolla would have made of President Trump’s efforts to build a giant ballroom at the White House, his spending countless hours posting social media memes of himself, the nearly $200 million taxpayers have footed for his golf outings, or the UFC and Grand Prix events he hosted at the White House. In fact, it’s difficult to even say whether Trump is more a bandit or just plain stupid—or whether his administration is filled with more obvious bandits who are simply in it for themselves, like Scott Bessent and Marco Rubio, or crazy idiots who actually think they’re doing some good while sailing us toward disaster, like Pete Hegseth and RFK Jr. But it’s likely Cipolla, who died in 2000, would’ve given high marks on the stupidity scale to the administration overall, and seen it as a validation of his theory.

>The theory rest on five “laws,” which are as follows:

>Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.
>The probability that a certain person be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
>A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.
>Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular, non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people infallibly turns out to be a costly mistake.
>A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person. A stupid person is more dangerous than a bandit.

I feel bad for my two nephews because my brother and his wife don't ever read to them. Would it be bad to text my brother and suggest he should start, and that he ought to limit their game and iPad/iPhone time? They aren't my kids after all, who am I to judge any parenting? It's just they're very much the "put the kids on some tech so we can do our own thing (which generally means playing video games themselves or going out)" types. I don't know, maybe that's how it is these days. Perhaps with AI, kids not going to private school won't even need to know how to read and write well anymore!

I guess just spend time yourself reading with them (making it fun/dramatic) and then having separate fun afterwards, like taking them fishing. Then its just getting them fun fiction books they genuinely want to read themselves, I think this is enough generally to encourage them to begin reading themselves, I remember skulduggery pleasant and Cherub being two book series that triggered me to enjoy reading in my youth, I'm sure there's new books for that age range, ask at your local book stores, just make sure they're not written by anyone with funny ideas of what should be in a childrens book.

it’s quite a good little self-contained news story, that lady who’s survived two lethal injections. beyond the thought of being strapped to a table (after sitting on death row for years), being given your last rites, needle goes in, the world fading out and then .. waking up a week later - the technicalities of the law & responsibilities of care are also sort of funny. she’s currently receiving critical medical care. nursing her back to health. right after they’ve just tried to kill her. and what happens when she’s healthy? round 3? it’s almost like a hypothetical that a philosopher would invent to illuminate underlying beliefs & contradictions.

I'm speaking more about short stories here, but I imagine it could also apply to novels. Generally, the sort of stories that I see getting published in literary journals seem to deal with a narrow band of experiences, written in a fairly homogenous "MFA" style, if that makes sense. But I should also make it clearer that the main thing discouraging me isn't even external factors so much as a horrible sense that anything I create is inevitably just affected, pretentious shite, as retarded as that sounds.

white supremacy as we know it now must be an american invention, right (though obviously it’s spread)? because ‘white’ is an umbrella term. there’s no single ‘white culture’. there’s scandinavians, celtics, frisian germans, slavs, etc. it’s like saying ‘a british accent’; there is no one british accent. white isn’t an identity. it’s like ‘black’. the black v white thing is funny because they white and black americans both have more in common with each other than they do europe or africa respectively.

Consequently, I believe no one can dispute this conclusion: the Aryan-Hellenes prior to Deucalion—the Aryan-Hellenes who remained virtually free of any admixture, whether Semitic or aboriginal—were the Titans (1).

(1) Hesiod derives the word *Titan* from *titainō*—*hoi teinontes tas kheiras*—meaning "those who stretch out their hands." This meaning took on the sense of *basileus* (king), and those to whom the term was applied became Kings *par excellence*. Similarly, the Zoroastrian Aryans referred to their ancestors—who were likely contemporaries and brethren of the Titans—as *Kai* or *Kana*, meaning "Kings." Pseudo-Orpheus and Diodorus depict the Titans as the first of humans, the archetypal men (Diodorus, III, 57; V, 66). The Thessalian dialect faithfully preserved traces of this ancient concept, with *Titan* denoting the lord or chieftain (see Böttiger, *Ideen zur Kunstmythologie*; Dresden, octavo, 1826; Vol. II, p. 47 and *passim*).

Ahh, I'll never stop reading Arthur de Gobineau.

The Titans were the direct sons of that ancient Aryan god—whom we have already encountered in India at the dawn of the Vedic era—namely Varounas, that venerable embodiment of the piety of the progenitors of the white race, whose name the Hellenes preserved after so many centuries in the scarcely altered form of Ouranos. The Titans—sons of Ouranos, the primordial Aryan god—were themselves indisputably Aryan; they spoke a language whose vestiges, surviving within Hellenic dialects, bore an undeniably close affinity to Sanskrit, Zend, Celtic, and the most ancient forms of Slavic.

I've spent my whole life fighting, but this has left me atrophied. I am no longer a man, and today I realized that.

For the past year or so I was wondering why everyone views me as this ultimate confrontation with their destiny. Why would they sacrifice their morals and integrity when there's always a better choice? Why couldnt they pick a middle path that doesnt result in mutual destruction? Why would they throw themselves at me when there was never any hope they could win? Turns out, I fucked up. When you never lose, you lose your humanity. A person who dispatches everyone in front of them forever isnt a person at all, but a monster. And how do you defeat a monster? By sacrificing everything.

I'm so tired of fighting anons. I dont want to fight anymore, but I dont know anything else. How do I stop? What would I become?

That's not really my problem. It's a bit more... esoteric. Beneath all my self righteousness and ability is a cold calculating creature that delights in the suffering of others.

I'm tired of being a villian. I've never been one, but I look like one and fight like one. I have the characteristics of one. I thought I could be someone's right hand man, a good man's number one, but I'm losing faith that someone who can give me direction exists at all. I dont think niggmaxxing will help me with this.

I remember hearing the voice of the Devil ridicule me and narrate my life whenever I was 23, which was weird because I sold my soul to him to save the world whenever I was 19 and immediately forgot the decision, then was confronted with a massive mental breakdown at 24 where I thought the world was coming to an end.
There's much more too it than that, but the simple psychiatric explanation that it was just my brain fucking up doesn't seem very satisfying anymore.

What's the source of trying to avoid looking at or showing any interest whatsoever toward an attractive person you encounter in public? I used to think it was the whole hard-to-get thing, but that only really applies if it's someone you see on a regular occasion. Is it fear of rejection? If I smile at them, they'll show disgust? Maybe. But that doesn't explain wanting to avoid looking at them entirely.

>As a software engineer, I no longer engineer anything. I define problem, AI solves it, I question AI, AI needs to defend the code. I verify the code, AI writes it.

>It will be the same with every single task and job step after step, coding was first. AI Will do everything for us, but for many many years we wont be able to trust it and most people will have to oversee AI's job by doing QA not the work. Of course some people will try to find shortcuts, but companies soon realize the only value that comes from a human - is not to take shortcuts.

I dreamt about going to a huge supermarket, I bought an iced coffee at a café inside, and the two girls making the coffee accidentally made two for me. They made a joke about keeping one and I said go for it, they laughed and we chatted a bit, they were really cute, had an alternate look to them. As I was leaving they got sad and said "hey you can't leave without giving us your number!" I smiled, a part of me wanted to, but I shook my head and said "sorry, but I'm taken," and walked away.

I had this idea that a kid is what keeps a relationship together after you become bald and her tits fall down. But as I said, I don't really know fuck all about it.
>>25577050
I am terrified of adopting a kid and not seeing it as mine. I am not really good with children, and I think I would be a terrible father for someone else's kid. Had not thought about it really hard.
Also, if your gf just doesn't feel like having kids, it can change; hormones are a really weird thing. But in my case, my gf has a degenerative disease that makes her hypermobile (very rare to actually manifest), and she doesn't want to risk it because there is an even smaller chance that the kid can have some really fucked-up development and live in tubes.
I totally understand her. I always have been a strong supporter of eugenics (for humanitarian reasons, not a proper nazi), but it never crossed my mind that I was not going to have kids. Never. And I REALLY like her.

There are other benefits from having muscles, you know...
And no, I am not talking about attracting females. You are much less likely to hurt yourself in accidents if you have muscles, and they prevent premature wear of your joints (this alone is a huge reason to go to gym).
A friend of mine who is an oncologist also said he can pretty much know who is going to make it or not based on the body build. Twinks have a really low chance of surviving the threat when compared to buff guys.
>>
>>25577168
yeah that’s why so many body builders have heart attacks in their thirties?

She never hated me and thought I was funny sometimes. I should have made a move. I was horrified when I saw her a few years ago. She was with a group of friends and she turned into a 300+ pound pink haired genderbeast.

>>
>>25577238
People will know...
There are also the collateral effects of giving your body unnatural amounts of testosterone. Most people don't have complications of doing it once, but man, you really don't need it.
Get some decent whey, creatine (I highly recommend a flavoured one because it taste like batteries) and a good pair of headphones and you are set.

A question which weighs on my mind is why some civilizations are strong when others are weak. For example, Islamic civilization is strong: the people are expansionist, conservative, they have a high birthrate, etc. Meanwhile civilizations like the West or India are weak, with endless self-hate and a demographic trend towards extinction. The Islamic tendency for civilizational pride is a model for the rest of the world.

The sad truth is that most Middle Eastern countries lack the social cohesion necessary to form stable national states. The West still posesses that cohesion, but wether that cohesion will remain for long is rather questionable. This is undeniable, that in the United States, the latent action of the Anglo-Saxon ethnicity alone fuels the persistance of their state, providing for a government that acts in the way of a factually homogeneous state. Nevertheless this energy is brought every day to the very verges of its limits and the day will come when this de-facto homogeneity, completely faded in front of the heterogenous populations that live inside his bosom, will lead to the most abominable ethnic anarchy imaginable.
>>
>>25577353
What purpose is that cohesion if the countries without it are outperforming the countries with it? Arab culture and civilization is doing just fine, it’s the West that needs to worry.
>>
>>25577356
Middle East is an absorbing culture. Their ethnic genius, which faded in antiquity, has been reduced to absorbing other cultures and ethnicities. The same can be said about Latin culture. For as long as the Spaniards and the Portuguese were still homogeneous enough to build stable national governments, they could go about conquering the world, whereas in the modern era their societal role has been reduced to passive conquest through Mexican settlers.
>>
>>25577353
americans claiming anglo-saxon heritage never sits well with us. we share a language and 1/4th of a culture but i honestly think the world would’ve been better off if that early american congress, after vanquishing the english oppressors, had chose a different language. like ancient greek or (as an ACTUAL american alternative) cree or navajo.
>>
>>25577356
in what way is "Arab civilization" outperforming the west? the region is drowning in ethnic conflicts, civil wars, religious extremism, authoritarian governments, aggression from external forces, terrible economies and a horrible quality of life overall.
>>
>>25577372
It doesn't sit well because it makes you look like an old bone opposed to social change. Hmm, coincidence? I don't think so.
>>
>>25577409
>>

>>
>>25577445
>You don't think the political struggle in the country is deeply rooted in ethnicity
reword that
>>
>>25577451
I mean it's not a secret that the Democrats favour ethnic melange and immigration whereas the Republicans seem opposed to it. But why would someone far too mixed to secretly hold on to an ethnic identity, oppose ethnic mixture? So the Democrats are the mixed Neo-Americans who passed the sexual revolutions of the past, whereas the Republicans are getting more and more behind. One can also take an Amish people and realize that they do neither conquer nor integrate people into their communities. One of the reasons many of their populations still speak an old German dialect from the 19th Century.

Thinking about pretending I'm a better Christian than I actually am, so I can travel to Japan as a missionary. Might even meet a cute girl. The opportunity would be there.

i guess i’ll have to be first to explain to you that all of this patter is distinctly american and couldn’t be further from the old world. ie you’re better off leaving anglo-saxon out of your identity and the world would be better off not knowing who pete buttigrieg is.

The closest I've ever been to an empty, totally silent, zen state of mind was when I've been 40-60ft underwater.

It doesn't happen on a conscious level. Ethnicities leave out their hivemind long after they disappear from the world, and I say that this Anglo-Saxon hivemind is what truly drives the United States as a country. I mean the very fact that you leave out the possibility for an American to identify as one, proofs the key of my argument. There is absolutely not one American who could identify as any ethnicity other than Anglo-Saxon, black or Native, and be socially tolerated, because those are the only three that are considered to build the truly constitutive elements of the country.

true on behalf of actual cultures. in england, king & country is in your bones (for better or worse). america doesn’t share this. you’re a country that teaches patriotism in schools and does the pledge of allegiance at morning prayers. i’ve said this before but: america is an immigrant country. the culture isn’t anglo-protestant; it’s anglo-protestant-jew-catholic-black-german-french-asian-esperanto-international.

Since I'm mentally ill my mom wants to set me up for a coffee with a young female doc she met. She's on the fence about specializing in psychiatry so i guess she wants to talk with me to figure out if psychiatry is her thing, maybe even help me a bit cause she likes helping people. And I haven't talked in person to a woman other than my mom, cashier lady and a bartender( both of those only hello, please and thank you) in 7 years. Maybe it would be good to help me not being so frightened of women, though I did have bad experiences in the past that made me this way.
Should I do it bros?

That still doesn't explain why the US is the only country in the Americas actively engaging in conquest while the others ones are either Europe 2.0 or druglord dystopias.

I mean, the US has culturally conquered the world during the post-war era. Not only that, their language has reached the same pedigree as Latin during the times of the Roman Empire. The whole world looks to the elections of the US; the role of the President seems to have become akin to that of who was going to be the next Emperor. Nevertheless, the Republican system still prevails, much like the Roman Republic persisted long after the conquest of Carthage. The Imperial System was but an innovation brought upon when Rome became too multi-cultural for the old system to remain in power.

and yet every country in the world (except south america) is still taught british english.
don’t get me wrong i’m a 1KYAE believer but don’t add culture into the equation.

What about the historical role of the US conquest of Venezuela. Leaving the Middle East out of the equation, there seems to be a great deal of countries where the population wants to become American.

So I’ve read 7 books in my entire lifetime. Am I ready to start my writing career or what?

>>25577584
I know this is unfeasible, but realistically what 7 books would it take for one to do this.

for some reason i assumed you’d know 1kyae. part of that essay is: if america opened its borders there’d be 1bn immigrants tomorrow.
but it’s a thin culture nation and has no real right talking sbout being anglo-saxon. stick to your strengths: not knowing much, not being much, but being ina perfect position to ruling the world for a millennia.
>>
>>25577584
refuse to believe someone at the legal age limit for this board has only read seven books

I’ve actually read over a couple thousand. I’m a booktuber with broccoli hair, but I’m not like the others. I’m way cooler.

Well the concessions made don't seem to have been a lot, the constitution is eternal and the population was forced into speaking English.

Are there any good writers who weren’t well read. I’m sure there are. I’d be interested in reading the thoughts of someone who has only read the Bible, but lived in a /lit/ location and had a /lit/ life.

insane america are still doing state-mandated killings. this case should be a good example of the ridiculousness of it. she’s currently under a duty of care and being nursed back to health, presumably so she is healthy enough for the state to execute her (round 3).

i actually distinctly remember arguing (& winning) this point when i was thirteen in my case study for school: the death penalty costs more - in lawyer fees and this and that (especially in your country) - than simply housing someone for the rest of their life on bread and factory chicken. unless we invent a way of telling one million percent if someone is guilty (and erasing human infallibility) the death sentence will always be expensive.
