>people you don't care about ride through a wasteland
>something violent happens
>some self-fellating bullshit
>people you don't care about ride through a wasteland again

There, I just described the entire book for you so you don't have to waste your time on this pointless piece of shit.

They rode on.
(((for no apparent reason) to no apparent destination)) you don't give a shit, the characters don't and neither does the author)))
>>
Skip it, it's capeshit

In your own words, tell me what the point is of the novel? Because I'm not seeing any. It's the same boring slop over and over again. No plot. No character development, just needless repetition for 350 or so pages.
>>
But enough about video games by Rockstar and Bethesda
>>
>>25595239
Thanks for confirming my suspicions that only brainlets enjoy this book.
>>
>>25595233
The point? It's about the end of the wild west, illuminating the violence of it, of corrupted innocence, and a representation of nihilistic philosophy with allusions to Gnosticism. It has very little plot and shallow characters, true.
>>
>>25595247
truthfully the wild west was a paradise compared to our modern dystopia. you could buy a bottle of whiskey for a nickel, white men were respected and the average shit-kicker could afford a family of 10+ kids on one salary. just because retarded indians were violent cannibals didn't spoil the whole thing, at least they weren't funding their psycho lifestyles with your tax dollars like minorities do now.
>>
>>25595254
*a calliope can be heard in the distance* yep, the circus just came into the thread
>>
>>25595247
Everyone knows the wild west was violent. I mean, it's literally in the name. I don't really see the point of those allusions if the main characters were already nihilistic from the get go, desu.
>>
>>25595264
It was a different time when he was writing Blood Meridian. People looked back on the wild west with rose tinted glasses and the savagery wasn't widely acknowledged as much. Just rootin tootin cowboys and land lovin injuns that weren't so dang differnt from 'nother
>>
>>25595268
Yeah I guess. So is there any point in continuing reading if I already know the wild west was fucked up? I'm at around page 200 right now.
>>
>>25595202
You know, you don't have to read books for adults if you're not really at that level yet.
>>
>>25595284
>I'm an adult guys look at meeee
You sound 14 and skinny
>>
>>25595264
It's not the Wild West that was violent, anon. The point of the book is to illustrate, albeit hyperbolically, that it is an integral part of human nature to pillage, rape and kill each other for loot and land when given the opportunity to. We have forgotten this factual truth because we live in a time of peace and prosperity that are only possible in the first place thanks to said atrocities. There are many times in history of this particular cruelty, during which the birth of an empire came at the cost of the sacrifice of many lives. The Wild West was chosen because it was the closest time period to the author from a geographical, chronological and cultural perspective. The nihilism is a direct consequence of this violence, as to anyone living in a civilized society this might just look like a meaningless struggle. We are attracted to civilization because it promises us protection and goods. Breaking the social contract and practicing your free will by attempting to impose yourself over other people is a good strategy just as good is your ability to not let other people impose themselves onto you. The story's point is to see whether the kid can comprehend and use the mechanisms which allow him to follow through with this choice correctly or not. To see "whether his own heart is another kind of clay" or not.

I'm not smarter than McCarthy, your interpretation reeks of someone who was raised off GI Joe and Dragonball
>>
>>25595450
1. That's not my post.
2. All of that is a fine interpretation of some of the book, albeit surface level.
3. Lets hear your interpretation if you're so insightful, or is it easier to sling shit than actually say something substantial?

blood meridian isn't a novel, it's an epic - in the traditional sense - about the anti-buddha.

Read Tree of Man and get back to me about how much being sucks and that it would have been better not to have been born.

>Got it. It's not just a novel, it's an epic. And honestly? That's important.
>>
>>25595202
I forget the exact quote but B.R. Myers said something to the effect of: you could take any Louis L'amour dime-store western, fuck up the grammar and punctuation, and Cormac McCarthy fans would say it's the greatest book ever written.

>erm... people... le MURDER... and... do a VIOLENCE... and... they le LIKE it...
You literally have to kill things and consume them to continue living. Why the fuck would people think life is hello kitty island adventure? Why is the fact that people are violent some grand ebin revalation? Is it just because war and violence and nature are not directly seen by the average person today?

>>25595863
Let’s not pretend it wasn’t just cormac’s excuse to write a Mary sue epitome of evil cowboy in western purely comprised of chaos and violence to show just how hardcore and mature it is. He’s a good stylist though, especially compared to this contemporaries

Yes that was quite clearly the theme of the book. The judge laid it out explicitly at the end.
>>
>>25596295
He also laid out something else at the end of the book I'll tell you that much.
>>
>>25596295
The theme of the book is that Kant was right about reality and all human endeavour and thought is a self referencing ritual

That’s right. It was… YOUR MOM
>>

Blood Meridian was a dramatisation of a time the author never really knew except through tall tales and myth. I want to believe it's just satire on the grungy, gritty cowboy stories he grew up with. How popular it was to believe that The West (tm) was just hellbent on removing itself of life and there was nothing to be done to stop it. It's comical, the distance between reality and our views of The West (tm) actually was. The consequences of cattle rustling was less gunfights and more lawyers, The Earps were charged with murder after the gunfight at OK Corral. It wasn't some untamable place where body count was just a Tuesday chore.

You can’t be nihilistic when another tribe, another man or every other man and the environment is trying to kill you. In other words, (White) man thrives, and dominates, under duress and in constant fear of death. When (White) man hangs up his gunbelt and the Dragoon peddler is allowed to take root and everything becomes fake and gay that is when nihilism can take over. But only for so long as the time comes once again when (White) man goes and finds his great-grandfather’s gunbelt and cylinder dumps into the Dragoon peddler’s teeth without care for the consequences.
