Why do so many people say you need to go through a long-winded chain of authors spanning multiple epochs in order to understand x philosopher or philosophy? This is because most philosophers don't actually try to establish a truly presuppositionless understanding of things. They only want to circle-jerk each other about certain topics while not contesting the underlying implications or nuances their worldviews are based on. Take various neoplatonic theological viewpoints for example. The respective authors love talking about blah blah blah blah without actually contesting if whether or not neoplatonism is truly rigorous and critically viewing the underlying notions they take for granted. Thankfully, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel realized this and wrote his masterpiece, the Science of Logic, which is a lot less verbose and convoluted than his Phenomenology of Spirit, by the way. You should be able to read that, honestly, if you're actually able to follow the progression of pure thinking itself and the necessary conceptual conclusions that derive from it. Well, maybe you could read some other philosophers on the side since Hegel talks about how erroneous or malformed their viewpoints are along the way. You may even have implicitly adopted some of their beliefs, and reading his remarks on them may be a breath of fresh air for you. Happy reading.
