Continuation from >>23407269Are you watching gundam for the first time? The original series, a spin off? Post your thoughts, theories, or opinions with other people who are watching for the first time.I just started war in the pocket, the opening and ending is really nice. It's almost soothing or melancholy. The main characters are children but they aren't like the boisterous children from 0079 or zeta. They're more grounded and serious but the lighthearted humor still exists. It's just not over the top. I'm really liking the different vibe. Another thing I miss from more recent series is just how different the characters look. they have different face shapes, noses, ages. Sometimes you forget how much characters in recent series look similar or have no discerning features other than hair.
>>23458765Trying to actually finish ZZ this time after a Zeta rewatch. The tone does change significantly, but it's not as grating on me as it was the first time years ago. Made it through Episode 10 which is 2 more than the last attempt. I'm actually surprised they were allowed to stick to the "old" Gundam for 10 episodes before showing off the ZZ, especially after what they did to Victory. Also Roux is really attractive to me for some reason, I hope she doesn't die. She probably does
>>23458798You will be happy to know Roux does not die.
this scene in 0080 goes hard. Was tomino even involved in this, it has an actual coherent narrative compared to the series where he is a major writer.
>>23458798I'm in the same boat but about 20 episodes ahead. The tone shifts back to being very similar to Zeta around the late teens. There is still more comedy, but it feels more like the older shows. ZZ has a dynamite cast of girls, more keep showing up the longer you watch.
Plan is to finish ZZ thursday night, then finally watch Char's Counterattack after a nice steak dinner on Friday. I was debating watching War In the Pocket, Stardust Memory, and 8th MS team first to really watch CCA as a cap off to the UC for a while, but I decided release order is always best
why did the tone suddenly shift to shotacon in episode 5? Bernie listens in to a girl drunk dialing her ex and he has a whole montage of him and the boy. Kind of a weird moment to compare a romantic relation to the one you have with a 12 year old boy but it's not like i mind.I think christina, while it seems like droning, was conflicted herself on what it means to enter war. I think it was a bit refreshing to hear a character outright say neither side is good nor bad. you do what to have to do. It shows that she was conflicted about her own choice and maybe speaking to al helped her voice her own conflict. It was pretty funny that she knocked bernie the fuck out though. What a fucking ending though. Al getting shell shocked was not something i thought would've happened. I really like how this a soldier conflicted on his duties and 'side' to where he befriends a civilian. The taped confession is a nice addition to show his changed feelings. while nothing like this type of writing is very new or groundbreaking I love moral grey characters. It's always nice to get a character not so comically absorbed on their own side and willing to change.al and bernie are some of my favorite MCs so far. it was a really nice short ova series, one of the best for me in gundam.
>>23459239War in the Pocket is good.8th MS team is good.I am struggling to enjoy Stardust Memory. The dialogue, pacing and writing of the characters is just all over the place and does not feel like Gundam.
Starting G gundam. First thing i notice is that it's the GUY i think this is one of the only characters i recognized without even knowing he was from gundam Also based op I remember i watched this ages ago. It's strange to think how much gundam i was surrounded with but never watched.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZlhyQcQ-wA
>>23459239>>23459437If nothing else Stardust Memory has two of the most banging OPs in all of Gundam
>>23459437>War in the Pocket is good.>8th MS team is good. Not that anon but I was also thinking of just starting those(leaning on 08th MS Team) too. I'm still on Zeta right now.
Are Gundam 00 and SEED worth watching? I finished up Wing recently and so moving on to the next AU but I've heard some not so great things about SEED at least.
>>23459607I Ioved war in the pocket. It's only 6 episodes of 20m so it's a short series. I can't recommend it enough. I'm so glad I watched it. It focuses more on relationships rather than mobile suits
>>234587652 episodes into gundam wing, blonde-haired girl is very very pretty. Pretty cool badass rebel shotas taking the fight to the earthlings, I like it.
>>23459738>heard some not so great things about SEED at leastfrom UC boomers who hate everything not-UCSEED and 00 are great
>>23459474>It's strange to think how much gundam i was surrounded with but never watched.I fucking love rewatching things and picking up references after I've finally seen their sources. Like I'm a big Sudafag and just reread Kurayami Dance, and they guy just names the ghost following him around Challia Bull lol. Or after watching most of UC I now know most of the gundams in that old Game Grumps gundam fighting game vid. Connecting dots like that is always fun.
>>23458765I binged the Netflix CG Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance show last night and while the plot wasn't terrible, the zeon characters were. I did like the more 'street level' approach to the show, displaying more grittiness than classic Gundam shows. Kinda similar to 8th ms, and iron blooded orphans, though I only made it halfway through the latter since it just didn't hook me enough. Maybe I'll go watch the z series this weekend.
I just finished Narrative.I didn't like it.Unicorn mechs are way too magical. even Moonlight Butterfly has some kind of scientific logic behind it, but Unicorn 1-2-3 are just bullshit with its unlimited super saiyan ghost power.
>>23459738>worth watchingYes. I'm rewatching SEED right now and am in the late stages, shy of episode 40. It's a fascinating reaction to the war on terror and 9/11. Writing alternates between high-wire tension and teenage drama bullshit which is kinda funny. I like it
>>23460254Damn, i genuinely forgot about that. Might have to revisit Suda's other games for more because i can only remember overt references to Gundam in TSA and NMH3. Also love how Akari tells Wataru her favorite is Lockon Stratos in the very next page.
>>23451464 NTA but I was surprised when watching Unicorn for the first time in 2015 (my first Gundam show) by how much I liked the Laplace reveal. There were a lot of things I didn't understand about the show and I thought for sure that Laplace's box would disappointment me due to how much of a Macguffin it was being treated as, but no. It made sense to me. But now I don't remember much of Unicorn aside from that after having watched almost all of UC. Maybe I'll watch it again, now as a series instead of OVAs.
>>23460676It is worded oddly for someone to write 78 years before Newtypes started showing up. People also act like it justifies Zeon, but if anything it just means Kamile and Judau should be in government. The way it should have been worded to fix both of those things would be like "Each Side should be treated the same as any component nation of Earth." Or whatever the EF treats its subdivisions planetside. I can't remember if that ever gets named, but I am assuming it is a country and it is a federation.
>>23459738SEED looks like shit, do your own judgement
>>23460676>It made sense to me.It made sense to your that 80 years before Newtypes and as soon as people started moving into space that some people said "Hey we should include a rule that if magic space people evolve they should rule everyone!" and nobody thought it was retarded, but instead were so scared that it might be true they chose to hide it, instead of just calling the guy a retard and not including it?
>>23459738I thought SEED was dogshit personally, but if you enjoy melodrama it might be up your alleySeason 1 of 00 is good, season 2 is divisive, I personally didn't care for it and felt it squandered much of the potential from season 1In general I found the AUs to be hit or miss, mostly misses except for G Gundam which is fucking based
>>23460377God I love Suda's writing, I hope Romeo is a Deadman is good, but it kind of looks like a return to that Killer is Dead Suda-lite style.
>>23460254>>23460377>>23461194When we have each other we have everything
>>23458765>Another thing I miss from more recent series is just how different the characters look. they have different face shapes, noses, ages. Sometimes you forget how much characters in recent series look similar or have no discerning features other than hair. This is something affecting the entire industry. Each era of anime and manga had their own trends for styles but I feel the 2010s lead to a greater homogenization and now all youre left with are very simplified, uniform character designs that all resemble sword art online or any other popular 2000s/2010s anime. Its all too samey and shows with a distinct visual identity are only relegated to high budget projects by big studios.>>23459286>Kind of a weird moment to compare a romantic relation to the one you have with a 12 year old boyI think thats just a you problem. Perhaps adults and young adults sharing friendships with teenagers and kids just isnt normal anymore, but its still possible for the two to have enriching and joyful friendships and thats the kind of relation that Bernie and Al have despite their difference in age and status.
>>23459738If you liked Wing then SEED and 00 should be good enough for you. If you like Tomino Gundam the most they will be dogshit.
>>23459738I liked SEED a lot more than I thought I would rewatching it. Haven't touched 00 in years, but I remember it being okay.
Watched F91 the other day. Felt like a strange pilot to something bigger.
i just watched 8th MS team for the first time after MSG. I enjoyed both a whole lot! 8th MS team I felt ended up being more enjoyable - I was on the edge of my seat more with the higher stakes in combat, I felt, it was more intense compared to MSG!... THe one episode with the zakus visiting the guerilla's village for food... I wish it didn't escalate like that!! Majority of the characters were very enjoyable, Michel was probably my least favorite with how whiney he was. I wasn't sure how I felt about the love plot going on at first, but it panned out well. The last episode was very endearing, and I loved the small nod to Lalah in it. It was lovely, and to see Shiro and Aina 'reborn' was so sweet.
>>23461353That is what it was iirc. It was written out as another 50 episode anime and then had to get condensed into a single movie
>>23461708>50 episodemore like 13
>>23461273Tomino Gundam isn't that good. He made ZZ
>>23461819ZZ isnt even bad and its the worst Gundam series he made.
>>23461271Anon I'm okay admitting I like homo and ship them together. It is definitely weird to listen to a girl complaining about a failed marriage and think about your relationship with a little boy. However you like their dynamic, platonic or otherwise, it's a fantastic ova.
>>23461819Yeah but he also made Zeta and CCA. Im not saying everything Tomino makes is gold but if you like his style of Gundam the most I think its likely that AUs like Wing and SEED wont appeal to you as much because they are made with entirely different sensibilities for storytelling.
Just finished Char's Counterattack for the first time, that movie was fucking gorgeous. On the one hand, it felt like there were enough characters and movie pieces it couldve been its own full length anime, but it being one concise movie made it so easy and exciting to watch. Bright's kid is a bitch, don't really see how he's supposed to become a main character. The mechs were gorgeous, best theyve ever looked, gonna go order new gundam and whatever char's was called on amazon now.
>>23458798Made it to episode 20 now. It is starting to be better now which means I'm probably not dropping this time.I liked Moon Moon, when people say it gets good after it do they usually include it? That said it felt more Star Trek than Gundam and I like the former (or at least ENT and prior). Also my crushing on Roux is making me feel like they inserted me as Glemy and I don't like it. She is still the best girl though.
BECCHA = GOAT
>>23462285People hate moon moon according to most of what I've heard about it but its fine in my opinion. I think there was some confusion around the esper powers of the twin girls because the dialogue explaining it was poorly translated in the subs.
>>23462303I have one of the original BD rips so I assume it's the old subs, but I thought it was super obvious they were just Newtypes but didn't know the word since they were isolated.
>>23462294no man who joins the opposing side of the girl he likes (who have every intention of shooting down the fucking ship she's in) and only goes back because they weren't nice to him :( is worthy of being called a GOAT
>>23462294>>23462605Agreed, this faggot doesnt deserve to pilot the Hyaku Shiki. Its weird to have him treated like one of the main pilots when he isnt very trustworthy at all.Out of all the things Bright has done, handing over the captain seat to Beecha was the only genuine retard moment he had.
>>23462728I totally buy the actions of the Shrangi La kids, having lived their whole lives on a poor colony, why should they give a shit about some feddies who claim to be fighting for freedom and justice when thats never helped anyone in the sides? That being said, I agree that Bright just fucking gives up in ZZ and lets anyone with a pulse hop in a gundam and do whatever they want. I get he's burnt out after Zeta but it gets ridiculous.
>>23463363i buy how SOME of them react, judau's disinterest is perfectly reasonable, and i can even almost understand mondo and beecha trying to worm their way out of it, but they're blatantly trying to get their friends killed with the shit they pullwhich is especially bad in beecha's case when i'm also meant to buy that he's got the makings of a good captain in him and that elle likes him when not all that long ago he was trying to get judau to blow himself up
>>23461384okay, I watched war in the pocket.I cried for like an hour after that last episode... It was very endearing, lovely to watch Al in his daily life. He was such a rascal! It reminded me of being in elementary, and middle school. I was already told the ending would crush my soul, so I was on edge the whole time of when things would go wrong. Say it ain't so, Bernie!
>>23464888al's moment of ptsd at the end while his friends try to comfort him by saying another war'll start soon really hits hard
I watched Requiem for Vengeance and I was ready for it to be bad, but it was genuinely painful to sit through. The main cast were all unlikeable assholes (and not in a fun way) and it fundamentally misunderstands what Gundam is.
>>23464888>>23465000Everything about the finale was all sorts of layers of tragedy that compounded on top of each other. Absolutely phenomenal OVA.
So I've watched Hathaway several times and I consistently feel like I don't really get the plot? Hathaway is mafty erin and he has crafted the persona after quess dying based on Char's ideals. Why the fuck does Gigi matter here and why did it affect his piloting? Are they trying to lalah her or something? I know it's a trilogy but it doesn't really explain anything? Why does the Freddie guy hate his guys so bad am I not big brain enough or did they fuck up the novel>movie pipeline?>>23464888It's seriously one of the ovas I've watched so far. I'm really glad you liked it as well
>>23464888Well, just watched Stardust Memory. It just felt really pointless in the end. It was really bad, and hardly enjoyable. Kou was such a weak lead, and Nina might as well have just not existed at all. Honestly surprised Kou could smile at her there at the very end, but the dude has like no back bone - so maybe it's just his fate to be with a woman who will put him on an emotional roller coaster like that.Really just a slog to get through, so much felt like forced drama.
>>23468055I felt this way after around three episodes. I might try again but I feel it isn't for me. I don't think I'll try to slog it through either. I'll give it another try when I'm not tired and maybe background play it
>>23467602>am I not big brain enoughIt reads like your brain just doesn't fucking work at all holy fuck man. Are you watching these shit while on your phone or something what the fuck is wrong with you? The things you're confused by are insane.
Anon is mad the only thing we learn about Gigi in the movie is that she is a new type whore who the feddie wants to fuck and Hathaway isn't interested in the bs.
>>23462285Got up to episode 38 over the weekend. Puru's whole arc was pretty good. Really made me feel like she was a bratty little sister and makes all the doujins previously read feel dirtier. Roux also continues to be best girl and I didn't mind her turn at AWOLing. Also her being the Zeta's pilot was a fun coincidence as I was building the verKa while watching.I didn't like the reasoning behind the events that led to them ditching Bright. Like it has taken you how long (and 2 series) to finally be like "let's not have kids fight wars maybe?" Especially since this was the 2nd time in like 6 episodes that they are trying to disband the Gundam team/Argama despite them being one of the only consistent groups fighting Neo-Zeon and not trying to surrender to them. I did enjoy Captain Beecha's first received orders being "take out Side 3 or the whole crew will be considered traitors by all of the EF and AEUG" as that seems like an appropriate response to stealing a ship.
>>23467602>why did it affect his piloting?Gigi is gorgeous and Hathaway is still a young man after all.
>>23469775>Like it has taken you how long (and 2 series) to finally be like "let's not have kids fight wars maybe?"doesn't help that everyone fucking knows about amuro and his streak against zeon and yet they STILL randomly decide "nah these kids? fuck em they ain't shit" it's not even a formulated decision really, the AEUG staff just wanted to look like they had 'mature adults' doing the fighting after managing to finally pick up the pieces they'd been left inespecially when their intended replacements won't even follow the captain's orders, these schmucks get told to man the turrets and their first reaction is "why?!" AND THEN THEY FUCKING ABANDON THEIR POSTS IN THE MIDDLE OF A FIGHT TO BITCH ABOUT ITi mean jesus these assholes singlehandedly made me wish bright got back in the slapping business for an episode just to hand them the correction of a lifetime
>>23468361apparently there was issues with writers at the start, I've heard. It was definitely hard to stay engaged, so if you end up giving another try - god speed dude
>>23469988The worst part is they didn't somehow find OYW veterans or something to replace the (now veteran) kids. They just found some middle aged green recruits and decided that was better.
>>23458765War in the Pocket is an absolute masterpiece, it should be up there with shit like ghibli (imo not worthy of his accolades), akira, barefoot gen etc, it transcends the gundam franchise, which I think has many masterpieces anyway.
>>23470210I ended up bypassing the show tnirely and just watching the 0083 the after glow of zeon compilation movie. I felt the movie was a much better choice over the series. I don't think I'm ever going to sit for the series now. The series isn't something i'll ever really rate highly though. The villains feel like they did nothing. Nina was an awful MC with piloting mecha = fucking her autism
>>23470423>>23470210>watching porn for the writing
>>23470432>watching pornit didn't even have that
>>23470443He means it's nice to look at, you simpleton.
>>23470494I know anon. I would argue f91 was better looking that this series
>>23461992What about F91?
>>23471567Planning to watch it, I'll let you know by like sunday
I keep going back to zeta and thinking it has great character design, scene design, the characters and their dynamics are just fun to watch. I almost feel like I should have skipped this to watch last. I don't think g Gundam fits me. The soundtrack is amazing. I might try and get a little further and decide from there after my zeta rewatch
>>23458765Cute pic.
Is there anymore aus like zeta or war in the pocket? So far I haven't been a fan of 91, g Gundam, or victory
>>23481497Did you watch ZZ? It starts wacky but the latter half is similar in tone to Zeta
>>23482113Yeah I've watched origin, 0079, zeta, ZZ, CCA, war in the pocket, f91, unicorn, Hathaway, stardust movieTried v, g gundam, stardust tv.Not really sure where to go from here? & Gundam just felt like a lot of shows I grew up with that I didn't like. The tone of the show wasn't my favorite. I couldn't get into v very much. Something about the writing didn't appeal to me.
>>23482687Maybe Turn A? I havent seen it yet but I know a lot Tomino fans really like it
>>23482687While they won't scratch the same itch as Zeta or WitP, Turn A and After War X are definitely worth trying.
>>23482713>>23482762I'll try turn a and x this weekend then. Hopefully I'll enjoy them. I don't think many things can really scratch that itch. War in the pocket was a really special show honestly. I've been debating also trying out galactic heros just to see if that would fulfill some of the types of things zeta had as well. Are there any novels from tomino that hasn't been adapted yet?
>>23482856>Are there any novels from tomino that hasn't been adapted yet?Quite a few. Im no expert but there are at least 2 alternate takes on Chars Counterattack he wrote>High-Streamer >Beltorchika’s ChildrenThe latter of which spawned the Hathaway trilogy, only the first of which has so far been adapted into a movie. I havent read any of them but Ive heard some people like them more CCA, and they all have free fan translations.
>>23482872I don't think i would count the hathaway novels because they are being adapted but i guess I can take a look at high streamer. I don't really need translations either.
Finished War in the Pocket the other night, it was just as incredible as everyone says. Gonna put off F91 and watch Stardust Memory now, going in with lower expectations but its charming so far. Mora might be in the running for best gundam waifu.
I downloaded MS, x, WFM, and turn A and starting on MS first. hopefully I like them. MS started out quite interesting. I hope it keeps the interest for me even though it's on the shorter side.>>23486306if you end up not liking it then go for the movie version (afterglow of zeon) i didn't like the series but liked the movie.
Major props to the guy on nyaa who has those huge packs of all the gundamn anime in release order. Theyre great quality, dual audio, and them being so well organized has motivated me to watch everything
>>23488931Gundam nyaa guys are great. I keep referencing this chart I screen capped from a torrent as well
>>23488965I'm dumb as hell
MS is really fun. I enjoy his character a lot. Gundam consistently has fantastic opening and endings that i find myself singing throughout each iteration i watch.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwQVvoyA7Ykhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtYxh0E_6AYThe ending here is my favorite. You see all the antics of the team.
MS team was really a good watch. it didn't have many of the same hard hitting subjects like war in the pocket and the intricacies of some characterizations but the simplicity of ignoring war and identity to find your own path is something i think the main series needed more of. A lot of these OVAs are gems that if removed from the 'gundam' name would get talked a lot more on i think.
I'm immediately hyped for this fucker
>>23498804Glad you're enjoying Garrod so far and I hope you enjoy the rest of X.
>>23499212He's a really fun main character. I've been a little busy recently to binge watch. I like that he's different than the typical Gundam MC as well.
X fucking sucks
>>23510573care to elaborate?
Is there an up to date version of this? I know there isn't much missing, but I like the format.
>>23462165>it couldve been its own full length animeIt was originally planned to be.>Bright's kid is a bitchAs opposed to other bitch kids, like Amuro or Kamille? >>23467602>Why the fuck does Gigi matter here and why did it affect his piloting? You can't into Newtypism. Rewatch Zeta.>>23498804He is so bland and so is his girlfriend. >>23513602>>23510573It sucks for being so boring and unimpactful.
>>23516803>I like the format.kys
>>23522869>It was originally planned to be.no it wasn't
>>23522869>As opposed to other bitch kids, like Amuro or Kamille?Neither of them killed anyone with friendly fire, which puts them past either of my two favorite autists.
Just finished F91. The middle is all over the place but the first and last half hour were absolute kino, really had a great time. Will probably start victory soon, but as a dubfag Im not super excited.
>>23458765
I don't think I like g Gundam. It's too of that time period. I'm not a fan of early 2000s battle anime and it reminds me a lot of those.
Finished up Tomino's Gundam entries so I decided to check out his other shows starting with Dunbine. Around 2/3 of the way through and I've been really enjoying it. I've heard people say it falters in quality in the second half so we'll see
>>23530011Too much fighting, not enough plot.
Why did they make Fa such a shitty pilot in ZZ?
>>23533057Because she was a shitty pilot in Zeta. Did you forget the number of times Kamile had to save her?
>>23533181She wasn’t THAT shit.
>>23533213She also wasn't that shit in ZZ, considering she is out of it as her BF is now mentally 5 years old when she does pilot.
>>23533258Yeah everyone from the old cast is incompetent in ZZ and its pretty justified from how awful the Grips conflict ended. Given the shitty condition of the mobile suits Fa was piloting in ZZ, I'd argue Bright's performance was a much bigger downgrade
>>23533758you can really feel just how done with everything bright is by the end of ZZ, dude takes the first opportunity to abandon ship and appoints beecha "i'm sure the zeeks won't try to blow up the ship with my almost-GF on it THIS time when i turn traitor!" oleg of all people as his replacement
>>23533852Bright is so fucking funny in ZZ. Doesnt hit Judeau because he can tell its not worth the effort, appointing a bunch of dumbass kids to important positions in priceless mobile suits, flirting with some random woman while people shit talk him for not raising his kids, its hilarious. Love how he cant even be bothered to button up his uniform anymore.
>>23533859you just know any thought of actually trying with these kids flew out the window the second iino, the only one who could be described as relatively normal, put a fucking zaku head on the zeta
Just started watching X, around episode 10. Most of what I knew about the series came from playing the games (especially Alpha Gaiden) so it's nice to check the original source. The X is one of my favorite Gundam designs and I love how the mecha look bulky in the animation. Also like how Witz (that fucking gold stash lol) and Roybea aren't complete jobbers as one would expect from side characters and most of the time can hold their own agains the fucking Frost Brothers. Garrod is endearing despite dumb, Tiffa is damn adorable and Enil is a cunt (that said RIP Chieko Honda).
>>23533859Tomino always delivers when it comes to shitting on adults.
>>23534338>Also like how Witz and Roybea aren't complete jobbersI ended up liking those two quite a bit. Episode 15 has some great character moments for both of them on top of some pretty slick directing and one very funny QUALITY moment.
>>23488889Does the movie version have any new scenes?
>every girl is falling for JudauIt's so tiresome
>>23458765I finally got around to finishing Unicorn Gundam today. I'm reeling.I've been watching in order of release and it was an incredible ending to the UC. Makes me really glad that I kept watching after getting put off by victory. I especially liked that it actually ties off all the in universe history and themes of the series building up to it, and builds on them in the process. Even as I write this I'm noticing parallels.I particularly eat up the Newtype stuff so it's been especially enjoyable thanks to that, but in general it also just feels like a grand reconciliation of the UC with itself. To go into more detail, the image attached by >>23516803 summarises a lot of the pros a lot better than I could, but I also don't think some of it's cons are merited. Sure characters can be erratic sometimes, but it fed into the story well enough to be easily forgiven, especially given how Z and ZZ were, and I'd even argue that Full Frontal's background being undisclosed is actually a benefit. If he had some kind of grand backstory behind his motivations beyond him maybe/maybe not being like the Purus then it would have weighed down his purpose in the story as not a successor to char, who in the story rather than in universe is far better replaced by Riddhe, but instead as the ghost of the One Year War itself. The scene where Char finally completely moves on with Amuro and Lalah is less the death of a mortal man, and more the true lethal wound, spiritual and physical, to the almost undead turmoil between the earth and space. If it actually sticks or not is less the point than the emotional and thematic weight of it. If there's one downside to how much I adored the OVA series it's that I'm now somewhat dreading Gundam Narrative, since I'm unsure it can actually follow Unicorn up in any meaningful way. I may just watch Twilight Axis and then finally pick up another continuity or one of the standalone shows.
>>23516803I like seeing X get glazed like that but the WitP and Turn A slander is ridiculous.
>>23536142I'm really glad you enjoyed unicorn anon, You described a lot of the thoughts I had on the series once it was over .I'm not sure how anyone can really hate that series I felt the weight of 'char's death was handled really well. I felt it in a different way than your interpretation but I'm honestly glad you shared yours. It had a really weight to that i thought about for a few weeks. While i took his passing to him finally giving up and accepting something he always wanted as char - death I think him being a figurative weight to the OYW is a good thing to ruminate on. Thanks for sharing anon. Unicorn is one of my favorite shows. I haven't started narrative for that reason
>>23538407I'm just glad someone liked my wall of text. I don't really have anyone to talk to about it since my one friend that does like Gundam is too ironic to seriously discuss this part. Also good to know I'm not alone in not wanting to ruin Unicorn with stuff that comes after it.I think I might finally pick up G-Gundam next, and see why people keep turning into baptist preachers every time it's mentioned.
>>23536142I liked it but I fucking hated FF. He was the weakest part of the whole thing. Neo Zeong was ugly too. I agree that Riddhe works better as a Char of the show. He is the best written character for me.what did you think of the ending? I don't hate it but, I would have preferred if Riddhe and Banagher had died to colony laser. I have heard that they are making a sequel, so maybe later.
>>23538531Regarding the ending, I think Riddhe and Banagher surviving helps what felt to me like the thematic throughline. As the successors to Amuro and Char they encounter a similar final battle at the site of a great disaster, but instead of killing each-other as Char drives himself further into madness and Amuro near-helplessly gets dragged down by fate, the two of them manage to reconcile in the wake of "Lalah's" death and together forge a better path for humanity. If the two of them had died I just don't think it would have been as solid, compared to the very firmly hopeful tone, and I prefer it this way despite also really liking bittersweet conclusions.I will admit, I feel like the "Lalah" part of this parallel is the weakest, since Mineva and Marida really have to share the burden, and most of that is on the latter.
>>23525566lol
Watched the first episode of Victory, hoo boy what a start. I've liked all of Tomino's stuff so far but man the Tomino formula does start to get repetitive.
Black M'quve?
>>23543175It's a bit weird till like episode 5 as they basically play episode 4 first then go flashback to episodes 1-3.
>>23530011Turned out they were right. The change up in setting was kind of disappointing and I don’t get why there’s almost no change to the status quo for 15 episodes until the brutality of the final 2 episodes. I still enjoyed it enough though, all things considered
I'm working my way through OVAs with someone who is brand new to Gundam. We just finished episode 7 of Stardust Memory and I gotta say its a hard sit. The art and animation are gorgeous but this has to be the least likeable set of leads I've slogged through. Kou might have an actual learning disability, how he got past the feddie version of the ASVAB is fucking beyond me.The only characters I actually like so far are Keith, who I think has a good arc, going from being shaken by the prospect of facing an ace to desperately trying to launch to save Kou from his own brain damage and taking a Guncannon 2 out against a mobile armor and Lt. Burning. I also like the sleazy AE rep guy, but I can already tell that he's not long for the world. We'll probably finish it over the weekend.
I think that I will give x one more try. I took a break from Gundam to watch some gorg and LOTGH and I feel like I feel refreshed about the series. They gave me a lot of comparisons to look for in writing that I feel a lot of Gundam fans tend to overlook. >>23546581Stardust memory is one of the worst ones to sit through as a newcomers to the series. I would have started with witp or a different iteration.
>>23546598We already did 08th MS Team, WitP and the first season of Thunderbolt. I never made it all the way through Stardust on my own, so this seemed like a good time to watch it.
>>23534338 hereAround episode 30 now. Still liking it so far, but I guess I understand now most of the complaints people have about the series. Ever since the New UNE showed up, shit went downhill fast, feels like the staff didn't know where to go from this point and much of the adventurous spirit of the first episodes is now gone.>Ennil gets a new MA only to be trashed the very next episode>that absolutely pointless Estardo sidequest >Frost Brothers sending weird psychos to their deaths>Roybea fucking off to get some Aki lookalike pussy (just for her to get unceremoniously disposed anyway)>bonus round: not!Cameron getting killed offscreenThat said, there's still a positive note in all this, which was the whole Double X ordeal, from all the series I watched feels like it was the Gundam upgrade that was the hardest for the main character to get and felt deserved, I love it even more in its glorious bulkier animated form. Tiffa is still adorable, Ennil is less of a cunt now, and I love the cast as a whole (even those dumb Frosts)
>>23523045worse he did on purpose
>>23547222If you both started with stardust I think you would've have had as good as a time. If it's part of a fun then I think you're for. Hopefully you guys enjoy it I couldn't finish it and switched to the movie.
What's so bad about Stardust?
>>23553056have you ever watched it before?
Took me a week to get through 5 episodes of Victory, why is it so ass? Do they explain why all the suits have to be helicopters with their legs flying off screen?
>>23553187BESPA doesn't have Minovsky craft tech that can fit in miniaturized mobile suits (see Xi/Penelope for their tech size for it). Beam rotors are a weird idea thought up by spacenoids for how to have continuous flight on Earth like they do in space. They forgot (or don't want to) walk on Earth which is also related to why they all wear masks to not smell Nature. But they technically worship nature at the same time.TL;DR - Doesn't have the flight tech the Victory has and also a weird space born cult with odd opinions.
>>23461992>ZZ somehow worse than G Reco
>>23553857G-Reco isn't anywhere near the bottom
>>23553489Just seems really weird that it’s 60 years since CCA and the tech has regressed 100 years.
>>23554080It hasn't really outside of BESPA not having base jabbers for Earth flight. Mobile suits in UC weren't able to fly in gravity (only jump) without one or a wave rider mode (which the helicopter minus legs mode technically is.
>>23553489>>23554080The beam rotors are supposedly some kind of pseudo-minovsky craft device. It's cheaper and way smaller (literally a permanently mounted spinning beam saber) to integrate than a real minovsky craft like the special minovsky flight system built into the Victories.>also a weird space born cult with odd opinions.Par for the course considering they literally reinvented the Dopp, weird cockpit and all.
>>23553187Why do zoomers have such a hard time with cartoons?
>>23554734Because Victory is terrible anon. There is no reason to watch it when you could watch Unicorn instead and lose nothing by skipping it.
>>23554764Victory is Tomino's best work at conveying the tragedy of war and how it affects people. Also that women shouldn't be soldiers. It also has the best UC Mecha fights prior to Unicorn.
>>23554764its lame zoomer mindset to see series and items on a checklist that need to be crossed off. You dont watch Victory because its Item 7 on your 20 item "media to consume" list, you watch it because its a cool weird show an artist spent a year of his life on.
Never fully understood what people meant when they said Char was a narcissist, but the other day I learned that vulnerable or covert narcissism exist, and it makes more sense maybe Apparently it's not just the people who think they're the greatest in the whole wide world, you can hate yourself and still be a narcissist, still have some empathy and humility but still have a narcissistic way of thinking, even if it's about what (You) think (You) have to do, or even thinking that (You) are uniquely worse than others, etc? Would appreciate people's thoughts on Char's narcissism even if it was discussed dozens of times. And apparently I might lean into this category as well, which is both startling and depressing. At least there's some consolation in that Char might be a relatable character.>only vaguely accomplished his goals but it's not much of an achievement>try to be a responsible adult and mentor but holy shit your issues are showing>will sort of just do whatever job you tell him to do, or take whatever role that everyone else really really wants you to>weird mommy gf issuesHoly shit
In zeta, why are late OYW mobile suits like the GM and Gelgoog considered "antiques" and completely obsolete? Aren't they only about 5 years old at that point? Real military hardware lasts for many decades, in some cases a century or more.
>>23459171War in the Pocket is famously the first gundam work without Tomino. Also, 0079-CCA are absolutely coherent, but you do have to actually pay attention while you're watching. If you want to see what incoherent really looks like, watch F91, which is a mess due to Tomino trying to force the ideas for a TV series into the runtime of a movie.
>>23459738I refused to watch 00 for years and finally got around to it semirecently. It's a lot of fun and has one of the most interesting settings, if you enjoyed Wing you should absolutely give it a shot. I say that not being a big fan of Wing though. I'd probably say 00 is my favorite of the AUs, if we exclude Turn As CC and GBF
>>23556332WWI tanks were obsolete by 5 years after the war. Early WW2 tanks were obsolete 3 years into the war.WW2 jets were obsolete by 5 years after the war.If a new tech comes out during a war, it'll keep the fast innovation up for a while.
>>23556332in WWI and WWII, fighter plane combat was like this where the very latest model usually meant a significant performance increase and stuff was constantly being developed, and the way gundam was written sometimes (especially the one year war) tends to reflect that more than combat nowadays where it's a lot of asymmetrical warfare and weapon systems stay in service for years with minor changese.g., in WWII from beginning to end, fighter engines increased in power by like 3x and firepower went from 2 machine guns to up to 12 machine guns or up to 4 autocannons. it really was suicide for a top of the line 1939 model fighter to try a match against a 1945 model. but then again, that's a fair fight - direct confrontation is not guaranteed or required in a war, and every weapon has its use in a given situation. even biplanes proved useful in WWII in certain combat situations.there's plenty of moments even in zeta where OYW models end up killing gryps era MS, but it usually involves some kind of advantage like ambush tactics, exploiting weaknesses, dumb luck, or usually something that lets them land the first hit in a fight, besides there's also plenty of examples of zeon remnants using decades old suits to fight newer enemies.
>>23556480cold war and later tech evolved a lot more slowly in some ways, much of it still seeing active use in conflicts today, and the US only sort of recently retired it's truly ancient oil-fired battleships.>>23556497I guess that makes sense too. I don't know how involved Japan was in a lot of the cold war and war on terror conflicts, and that a lot of war media, including gundam, reflects the aftermath of WW2 and the anxieties of what another war like that might bring. If bandai/sunrise tried to make a gundam series really tried to depict the horrors of a present day or near-future war, I'm not sure what that'd even look like, and certainly not like gquuuuuux.
>>23556503Naval vessels are a different animal than single/small crewed vehicles like tanks/planes. Gundam even shows this with the Salamis getting refits and being used for 100 years.Large naval vessels take a long time to build just due to sheer size, so they are built with upgradability in mind. Often the power generators are overbuilt 2x from their initially planned usage. Also there is space to put new radars and computers. This isn't true of a tank, as it needs to be as small as possible to reduce the amount of armor needed (smaller box, less armor, also easier to conceal). Fighter lanes need to be small as possible to save weight to get maneuverability, but some have started being semi-upgradable now that they take a long time to design/build due to stealth.Bombers are like naval vessels for similar reasons.
>>23556526I would guess that for old vehicles still in service like personnel carriers, a really old one is still a lot more useful than none at all.I don't remember which conflict it was, but I read that in places with no infrastructure, mechanics, supply chain, etc, propeller attack planes are sometimes more effective in the long term than modern turbojets or jet engines, because it takes a lot of work and parts to keep a jet running, but any diesel mechanic can fix a prop plane. I don't know if Gundam ever explores this sort of concept, but it would be a neat ide
>>23556617>I don't remember which conflict it wasany african conflict within the last 2 decades
>>23556361>0079-CCA>CCA >Coherent What the fuck were you smoking when you watched this
>>23556728NTA but CCA is not that incoherent. Tbf I also liked F91 so maybe Im just becoming a hardcore tominofag
>>23556728>>23556731NTA either but it filtered me as a kid when I read some Origin and knew an extremely vague gist of 0079 and Zeta. Having seen it properly though, it spells things out for you a generous number of times, and apart from figuring out the mind of our favourite sad and cool loser, it was completely fine. Unless you're some sort of crazy person that insisted on watching CCA standalone, I don't think there's really any issues that would come up in the movie.I also liked F91 as well though.
Decided to read that Double-Fake manga after getting the model kit of the main suit from it. It was serviceable, if I had to describe it. Kind of disjointed, but I think the mobile suit that looks like there's a giant pole impaling it was amusing.I should probably look for more set around the same timeframe if there's more like that guy.
just watched episode 40 of zetawhy the fuck did they let the sussy civilian onto the ship?and then let her roam the ship freely?why is bask blasting apart colonies for the lulz?are they all fucking stupid?
>>23556192One of these days when I am finally at peace with dying a virgin I am going to make a three hour YouTube video essay about Haman and Char's relationship.
>>23561468If it's any consolation, at 30 you will or have become a wizard, which is basically a newtypeEpisode 45 soon, at least. Here's hoping Char can catch a break!>>23561362Yeah I literally have no fucking idea what Bask or the Titans are thinking. Bask is cartoonishly evil and pointlessly cruel but very fun to see and listen to. Things are definitely escalating in this home stretch but man.
>>23561362>why the fuck did they let the sussy civilian onto the shipa civilian claiming to be kamille's sister with photos, let's not forgeteven if kamille obviously doesn't buy it, bringing her aboard the ship and trying to figure out what exactly is fucked up with her brain is pretty reasonable, since evidently somebody's sent her over despite seemingly being borderline retarded and they're better off figuring out why than leaving her on the colony and having her resurface as an enemy laterletting her roam freely was a mistake though, but you try telling the crew that the retarded womanchild crying out for her big brother in the brig needs to stay in there because she might be a spy
>>23562118I doubt any real military naval ship would even consider taking a civilian on board who didn't have a reason to be there, even if their identity could be verified, but the AEUG also took kids on board for some reason so whatever it's cool I guess.
>>23561362Yeah the Titans as the main villain faction is a shit successor to MSG’s Zeon. At least you get Haman and Scirocco to change things up. Also I found the Rosamie stuff to be a low point for the show, things get better after
I just finished Turn A, probably my new favorite Gundam series. My only question was what was the shining eyes Loran had in episode 23 when Teteth got shot? Was it some type of dropped newtype plot ploint?
>>23561362>why is bask blasting apart colonies for the lulz?are they all fucking stupid? The Titans are trying to terrorize the space colonies and the moon cities into abandoning the AEUG, and capitulation to the Titans. "Surrender or we will kill you"They do it before the show with 30 Bunch where a protest leads to them gassing everyone. They do it when they conquer Von Braun city and afterwards when they try dropping a colony on Granada. They try gassing that one colony in episode 29. Episode 40 they activate the colony laser and blow up a colony to this end, and the next episode they gas another colony. It's all brutal repression by brutal guys, but the people end up resentful and fighting back and supporting the AEUG harder.
>noo the person who obviously lied about their identity and was a cyber newtype betrayed us>how could we have ever have seen that coming?
Was CCA rushed? Some characters needed more screentime, especially Chan. Why is there no Sayla if she appeared in ZZ? What a wasted character. What the hell is psychoframe inb4: plotdevice. Some dangerous thing which steals people's life force? Would life force of Char and Amuro only be enough to stop Axis? Was Axis really morre dangerous than the colony Mashymre dropped on Dublin.I liked the movie. It has a lot of epic moments/ But my expectations about writting were much higher.
>>23563651Chan was supposed to be Beltorchika but Tomino was forced to make a new character. Look into High Streamer and Beltorchikas Children for the original ideas of CCA.That chunk of Axis wouldve been way worse than a colony. Gundam kind of hand waives how small colony drop damages end up being with how light/hollow colonies are for their size.
>>23563651>Was CCA rushed? It's a lot to take in on first watch.>Some characters needed more screentime, especially Chan.Chan's role was originally meant for Beltorchika, she still did enough for a minor character.>Why is there no Sayla if she appeared in ZZ? What a wasted character. She can't do much. The time to plead her brother to come back is long gone. Now, she doesn't want anything to do with him.>What the hell is psychoframeA new type of Psycommu technology that works on atomic level.>Would life force of Char and Amuro only be enough to stop Axis? It's not just them, but all other nearby units too. It's even implied to be the will of whole humanity. A miracle known as Axis Shock.>Was Axis really morre dangerous than the colony Mashymre dropped on Dublin. It was relatively unscathed when Haman it crashed on A Baoa Qu and obliterated it.The film gets better on re-watch, so don't worry too much about it.
>>23563704Haman crashed it*
>>23563696>>23563704>BeltorchikaI heard 2 opposite opinions about her. Some say she was supposed to be replace for Sayla and others say Tomino always planned her. So where is the truth? Is she really pregnant in the manga? This is what I'm trying to ask. If it was only Amuro and Char without other pilots, would their life force be enough to stop Axis?>she still did enough for a minor character.Well I agree that characters just work for the plot. But it's kinda boring>was forced to make a new characterBut why?I swear Gundam production after Zeta was so messy
>>23563719>Some say she was supposed to be replace for SaylaThere's literally no proof of this, it's just been a bullshit game of telephone in the community for years.Sayla and Bel barely any similarities other than being blonde. Yeah, she is pregnant. Film committee had some reservations regarding Tomino's proposed script. One of them was for Amuro to not be married. So, Tomino didn't think it was worth it to keep Bel in and made a new character.>If it was only Amuro and Char without other pilots, would their life force be enough to stop Axis?I don't know.
>>23563734barely have*god my typing is shit today.
>>23563719>But why?from what i recall the higher-ups didn't want amuro to have actually settled down, so bel kinda had to get thrown out because no way were those two gonna manage to go 6 years without having a kid or twobut obviously relationships are an important part of tomino gundam, so chan was made to be amuro's gf that he presumably hasn't been with all too long, but still long enough to show the contrast between those two and char with nanai
>>23563976>didn’t even care about her death It was pretty sad.
>>23458765I binge watched 0079, Zeta, ZZ, War in the Pocket and Gquuuuuux for the first time this year.I'm watching 0083 for the first time now. So far it's really, really boring. All I can say is that I began watching Gundam because I wanted to watch something about cool giant robots killing each other but what really caught me were the characters and their dynamics. Kamille and Judau are interesting characters and I wish there was more about them.
>>23467602He's conflicted about his actions and being a terrorist chips away at his soul. He isn't a remorseless killer and he understands that his actions have consequences for others. That woman represents a 'what-if' scenario. What if he ran away from all that with her? Could he have a normal life?At least that's what I got when I watched it.
>>23562129The AEUG is incredibly lax. Not only they make anyone who volunteers an MS pilot (Fa, Mondo, etc.) They constantly have soldiers disobeying orders, going AWOL and even using MS for personal purposes without facing any consequences.
>>23458765Just watch the original Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy for the first time. I've only seen a few Gundam bits and pieces before (including like half of Unicorn), but obviously I know about parts of it via general cultural osmosis. >Enjoyed the White Base crew and focus on the crew more than I thought I would >Bright is based>Amiro is fine, I assume he get more enjoyable in sequel series >I was ready to dislike Char just due to how popular he is, but he is a great character and I can see why everyone loves him >I grew to like the Zeon suits after not liking them just seeing them in images/gunpla (I think seeing them in motion really helped)>The Newtype stuff was way more at the forefront than I thought it would be (I assumed it was power crept in following series, like the Force in Star Wars)>I liked the animations and think it looked really good at parts Im looking forward to watching Zeta now
>>23566030zeta is funblue amuro has a lot more personality than amuro standard>>23565975how many times did the AEUG simply let a prisoner walk on out and steal a mobile suit? It's been at least three times so far
finally finished zetathe newtype bullshit was laid a bit too thick but it's cool
Is Mercury any good if I don’t care about yuri?>>23568267Newtype stuff was fine until big aura demons appeared
>>23568267what kind of newtype shit is good/acceptable in a Gundam series and what isn't?
Started Zeta. Were audiences supposed to think Quattro wasn't Char?
>>23568625Not that anon, but at least here on /m/, the general opinion seems to be>telepathic powers and perception are fine.>Actual physical barriers and power up attacks are lame and too much.Axis is generally excused due to being a collective of living wills, not just a single Newtype or a single living newtype and a bunch of dead ones.>Even bigger unique powers like time travel, crossing dimensions or possession (from the realm of the dead, not through some device that kept part of the newtype alive, recorded brainwaves or something) are just off in any case.>>23568726He's outright credited as Char, so they weren't hiding anything.
>>23568625newtype space magic missiles like the funnels or bits or remote psychic weapons are fucking stupid.Newtype shit like telepathy/clairvoyance/immortality/faster/stronger/heightened senses are okay. But any Newtype abilities that physically becomes tangible outside a person like shields or telekinesis gets absurd.
>>23568744>funnelsFunnels are cool so I can overlook it.
>>23568744>the year is 2025 and I think drones are a stupid idea
>watching Stardust>Char appearedDidn't expect him at all.
>>23568523mercury is good, nice action, good animation, acceptable english dub, decent story that totally falls apart in the last couple episodes, but that's par for the course it seems. The yuri is up to interpretation. Don’t worry about it.
Man Ive been watching in release order but I just havent convinced myself to watch victory. Ive liked all the other Tomino stuff but the idea of resetting back to 0 to ANOTHER kid who stole ANOTHER gundam and is at a base with ANOTHER ragtag group of soldiers and civilians. I know thats a lot of gundam but I just feel like I need a break from the formula and Tomino's specific flavor of that after 0079/Z/ZZ/F91. I'd skip to G Gundam but I feel like I'd never go back to it.
>>23572726I don't think Uso actually steals the Victory. He steals a suit from BESPA, but that's because the pilot is a retard who opened the cockpit after running into Uso using a parachute and the shute blocking the cameras.
>>23572726it's a good series in my opinion, but honestly i think it's perfectly reasonable to get a bit of tomino fatigue watching in release orderyou can either take a break like i did or just push it back to after G/wing, either way i'd recommend watching it at some point
>>23548312And finally finished X. What can I say, the whole cancellation thing really hurt the last 10 episodes or so, shit was rushed as fuck.Focusing on the good things: Pala is a total bro and damn best girl, Lancerow is a cool Char expy because he doesn't act like one much like Harry Ord, the whole DOME thing and the conclusion that there was a lot of misconceptions and no such thing as actual newtypes was kinda intresting, especially when you see all the different "powers" appearing in the series such as the dolphins or even the Frost brother's telephatic bs and absolutely loved their normal suits. Finally, Tiffa is still the cutest.
