It doesn't really matter. Mecha is mecha if mecha fans like it. Half the series here can be argued to not really count for one reason or another. Transformers used designs from existing mecha franchises so it's odd if it stops counting just cause they're not piloted. Especially when a lot of mecha aren't.The more entertaining part is how the transformer community will slowly get more and more heated if you insist that they are. Those guys typically do not like japan and really don't like it if you insist on the obvious Japanese culture aspects of the franchise. It's like battletech guys and probably comes from the same thing. They just don't wanna admit it.
