Bc if they do i will be surprised af
Bc desu they're more or less just sentient robots that can turn into cars and shit

It doesn't really matter. Mecha is mecha if mecha fans like it. Half the series here can be argued to not really count for one reason or another. Transformers used designs from existing mecha franchises so it's odd if it stops counting just cause they're not piloted. Especially when a lot of mecha aren't.

The more entertaining part is how the transformer community will slowly get more and more heated if you insist that they are. Those guys typically do not like japan and really don't like it if you insist on the obvious Japanese culture aspects of the franchise. It's like battletech guys and probably comes from the same thing. They just don't wanna admit it.

>and probably comes from the same thing
That they'd have to learn many new fun things from another culture and that "oldfag oldguard" posturing around meta like knowing which western artist had a fight with which western director becomes more irrelevant to interacting with the franchise as a medium
>>
>>23462017
You and I both know Robots and Mech's aren't the same thing there's even a whole wiki page that explains the differences
>>

He didn't say "mechs" he said "mecha." Mechs refer to the piloted thing specifically, mecha is a catchall for ALL robot anime which transformers belongs to.

Yeah. They originated from multiple /m/ based toys. Hell, Optimus Prime, Starscream and Jetfire are designed by the Macross guy
>>

Headmasters

Should Transformers be more like super robots or real robots?
>>
Mecha is literally short for mechanical, are they mechanical?
>>
>>23467640
no they are fictional
>>
All car Transformers are taken from diaclone, which are inanimate mechs that come with human pilot toys to put in the seats.
>>

The closest thing to a mecha convention in my nation is TFcon and they have a lot of non-transformers mecha stuff there so fuck it, it is.

Supergod Masterforce is absolutely a mech anime. Most of the cast are human characters that pilot Transtectors which are lifeless Cybertronian bodies.

super robots

there are western fans of the Japanese material, seemingly just not a lot of them for some reason. I’ve only watched Headmasters but want to eventually check out the Beast Wars sequels

Funny enough that’s was the reason why Harmony Gold became such assholes with copyright because one of the transformers was a Valkyrie fighter from macross.
And HG’s main goal with robotech was to sell merch.

What EN speakers call "mecha anime", Japan calls "robot anime"; in the actual Japanese animation industry the term "mecha" is broad enough to cover *anything* mechanical, even bicycles.

Yes, "Chō Robot Seimeitai Transformer" is a robot anime

And it's also one of the only good Transformers shows in the entire 40 year history. Curious!

Headmasters and Victory are great. Beast Wars and Beast Machines hold up very well considering the primitive CGI. Animated and Prime are enjoyable. I can't defend the rest, even G1. I love G1 but it's just a toy commercial and not much else. The 80s cartoons didn't get good until Headmasters. Everything after Prime has been absolute garbage, especially Earthspark.
>>
>>23464908
Honestly not even that. "Mech" as its own term with it's own distinction is purely from battlemechs, the mechs from battletech. It's entirely from battletech fans insisting that 'mechs are intrinsically different from mecha and trying to reinvent the super/real split all over again because they don't want to admit how much anime influence is in the thing they like.

Seriously, the mech/mecha distinction was purely invented to pretend that mechwarrior/battletech wasn't anime. It doesn't mean anything else.
>>
>>23483532
Everything after Prime and including Prime has been trash. Animated was the last good show and there hasn't been a single good thing in any other media since Devastation, One came close but the voice cast absolutely destroys that movie.

Go to the toy board fag

Do Braves count as mechs?
Yes, and so do Transformers.

Japan considers them mecha.

Sentient robots are mecha, regardless of whether they can have pilots or not.
Mecha is just short for "mechanical"
>>
>>23483532
>Beast Machines

This makes a really bad sequel. It never held up back then let alone now.
>>
>>23491951
I can't argue with that but I still love it as a stand alone series.
>>
>>23462014
They're giant robots. You can ride in them (as long as they're in a vehicle mode, but it still counts). Their first designs were created by a Japanese artist, and they look more or less the same as mechs from shows that are universally regarded as "mecha anime".
Every time a piece of Transformers media (e.g. Prime, Animated) goes out of its way to distance itself from Transformers' aesthetic roots in Japanese mecha art, it doesn't look right.
Transformers is a mecha franchise.
>>
>>23497003
Even if you can't ride in them, they are still mecha.
>>
>>23497349
I agree, I just thought it would be funny to mention it.
