If you want a traditional magical girl that isn't Precure in the modern era, be my guest.

How traditional are we speaking here?

The series is about halfway in and it's been episodic adventures where the general formula is basically identical to Precure's victim of the week.
The most it's played with general formulas are that it has the Kaneko DNA of occasional Showa-era anime references sneaking in or how it seems to be moving into wanting to do social commentary on demographic shift which is a more political subject than you'd expect from mahou shoujo also given PM Ishiba's unpopularity, Priorche might get some controversy from Japanese parents given where it seems to fall on the subject.

Could you elaborate?

Digimon Ghost Game seemed to be doing commentary on immigration and mental ilness until the storyline suddenly got derailed, maybe because it was sending messages like "sheltering refugees is a noble act but compassion doesn't make cultural differences go away, and dismissing that as a non-issue can end up harming both sides even if no one involved is evil"

The main magical world is Alicepia, a land full of the mascot characters where young girls can be transported to. The girls have a magical power called Musessence that is generated when they're doing things they're passionate about (especially singing and dancing) and the villainous faction are harvesting it.
Over the first couple of cours it's steadily built up that Alicepia used to be extremely exclusive with very few girls able to access it since the way in was through specific physical locations, but it recently received an app that caused a massive influx of girls into the land.
The most recent episode established the villains as natives of Alicepia, one of them calls out the humans for distorting the world's natural state and molding it after their own desires. It's sending a message that due to the massive amount of Musessence that the land has become more prosperous but at the cost of losing its native culture.
I think it may risk being controversial not just because it's different from a refugee story, it's about things like gentrification and Westernization. Many Japanese still do not like America strong-arming their way in and the recent government's choices regarding importing foreign nationals have been met with a surprising amount of backlash for Japan which is usually not too vocal about politics. PO might have a different stance so I suspect this sort of narrative might be a tad controversial for kids' programming at the moment.
