I mean there not really wrong just weirdly spelled?
Japan has a lot of spelling variety so when you translate that sort of stuff its only normal for some weirdness to come through
Its honestly only really strange because later version changed the names
>>
>>23509070
>Japan has a lot of spelling variety
It's quite literally the opposite. They have such a limited set of sounds in their language that transliterating them into any other writing system is a guessing game because you don't know what sounds they either badly approximated or dropped entirely.
>>
>>23507542
Gundam is from the 70s where do think the idea of newtypes came from

I'm the one that made the OCR job and posted the ebook on /m/ a while ago. Let me know if you find any mistakes from the conversion (eg. "svmbol" instead of "symbol"). I've tried hunting as many as I can find.
I'd also be interested in finding a copy of the Japanese edition that came with Mikimoto's illustrations.

I also did an ebook conversion of For The Barrel to go along with the novel: https://www.mediafire.com/file/nhvdrzqa1s3fqgv/For_The_Barrel.epub/file

They did. Schodt took the one he did in 1990 as a template and improved things a bit in the 2004 edition. Standard names for the most part, but also some style and translation overhauls.

Going through the novel and it feels quite neutred? compared to the original. Maybe that's not the correct term but Amuro is a lot more plain just being generic soldier guy. Char seems to be less mysterious and have a lot more chip on his shoulder. Bright doesn't have his emotional spunk and just seems like a guy who's a bit out of his head but he means well. Mirai is also less there and she's not really the team mom. It's definitely different though. Honestly, it reads a lot more like Starship Troopers (novel not movie) except replace the politics/socioeconomic talk with sci fi talk on newtypes.
>>
Did anyone ever see the old dubs of the movies?

and sorry I DO NOT appreciate tomino writing a straight fucking woman moment when it comes to Lalah.
>falls in love with Amuro after like 2 pages.
>NOOOO WHY COULDNT YOU FIND ME EARLIER I LOVE YOU WAY MORE THAN CHAR

sure it's "somewhat" similar to the anime but Lalah just disrespecting Char like that is fucking a bitch slap.

it's because the very first English release of the novel trilogy was back in 1990(indeed it was more or less the first work in the franchise to get an official release in the English speaking world), the more familiar translations for many of the names wouldn't be standardized* till the late 90's when Gundam started being pushed properly for the first time, the novel trilogy would get a retranslation in 2004 for an omnibus release right before the bubble popped for the franchise's first era of US releases(RIP to the MSIA line of figures), and has gotten rereleases every now and then ever since

*though this wouldn't be the last time they've tinkered around with the official English names, like when they mucked around with the names for SEED and SEED Destiny a couple years ago

>>23517662
Tomino's novels have a tendency to be a bit subdued compared to his animated works from what I've heard, probably because he doesn't have to include any toyetic elements that he doesn't want to(from my recollection the novel version of Wings of Rean doesn't include any Aura Battlers in it for example) so there's less of that "biting the hand" behavior that a lot of his shows have in that regard
>>
>>23517780
It's weird, other than some of the weird moments where he describes some of the women (bro im not a prude or gay westerner or anything, but even im a little like huh wtf is this guy on about), I'm just genuinely surprised there's none of those "emotional" writing that's in the anime.
>No Amuro's Mom
>No Amuro refusing to go out to fight in the Gundam
>He gets over Ryu's death pretty quickly and it's more of damn it we lost one of our friends rather than oh fuck it was my fault.
>Frau Bow is left behind on Luna 2
It just feels significantly different from the anime even if it follows the same plot line. (sorta, we all know what happens)
>>
>>23517787
It IS significantly different from the anime, it's not "just feels", it IS wholly different.

Earth arc is entirely cut from the novel. The final stretch is extended quite a bit, and bears some similarity with the 37-52 episode from Tomino memo.
>>
>>23518330
>>23518290
I was expecting a lot more depth and details from the novel but I'm finding the anime has actually more things to say for the characters. There is definitely more political talk but it's nothing that hasn't been shown before. I'm only on book 2 though.
>>
>>23519357
That's because the novel is just Tomino's ideas, and the core character drama is compelling, but the things that made Gundam what it was were a combined effort. I like the original novel trilogy but I think the Zeta novels are better.
>>

Also keep in mind he was writing these novels while working on the series so some parts feel half-finished because they need the context from the show to make sense. Some scenes have more details not in the anime or are like alternate takes that were reworked for the broadcast.

They didn't really fuck with most of the SEED names, it's just when it was Toonami'd back in the day they let them do their own thing for America while the new releases are following the Japanese side.

On the other hand the new Raider gunpla from only 3 years ago does have Clotho Buer instead of Crot Buer for some ass reason even though the latter has been on trading cards as far as I can tell outright from the beginning so there's a broader consistency issue created by the underlying obscurity of those original romanizations compared to the English localization, and some like Raww are just too fucking stupid.

SEED is all over the place. And personally, I prefer the romanizations that already had some previous meaning. For instance:
>Yzak Jule/Joule (like the measurement of energy)
>Raww Le Klueze/Rau Le Creuset (like the cookware brand)
>Nicole Amarfi/Nicol Amalfi (like the Italian town)
>Gilbert Dullindal/Durandal (like the legendary sword)
>Meir Siva/Meia Shiva (like the Hindu deity)
>>
>>23526808
They're supposed to be weird shit that sounds like a normal word or name though. It doesn't work as well in English where you don't have the katakana helping and that's kind of why the dub versions went the way they did but eh whatever. Like even Stellar Loussier instead of Stella doesn't happen by accident.

>They're supposed to be weird shit that sounds like a normal word or name though.
Emphasis on "sound like". With the exception of characters with obviously Japanese names (Kira, Uzumi, Kojiro, Houmra, Asagi, etc), they aren't "normal" for its target audience. If a character's name happens to coincide with a real one from somewhere, it's probably a coincidence. For instance, "Clyne" is an actual Celtic surname, not a misspelling of "Klein". "Siegel" is an actual Jewish surname, however.
No idea why they decided to go with "Cagalli" instead of the more standardized "Kagari", or "Kuzzey" rather than "Kazui".

And, if you believe Jisho, "Shinn" is a female name. Yes, yes, you can make the fucking joke now.

Anon, I'm sorry to tell you this, but I think that other guy is trolling you.
>>
>>23528044
Okay let me put this another way for you. Isaac Joule is an AD 2002 way of spelling a name, Yzak Jule is a CE 71 way. It's a way to make names more distinct from present day without going full Tomino with names like Full Flat and Kakricon Cacooler. Spellings evolving as they pass through different languages and cultures is a very real phenomena anyways, that's one of the tricky things about romanizing names in Japanese media as it is.

Nothing on the 2012 edition anywhere online (it's my understanding that it's just a reprint of the 2004 one), but here's a Zip file with very old digitalizations of the original editions:

Gigi very much had a definitive design consistent across something like a dozen novel illustrations that is still nearly the same as the movie one and that G Gen one is just a different outfit. Mikimoto also designed it but I don't know if it existed at the time of the novel or was made for the game.

Kusko Al on the other hand has absolutely no visual representation from or attached to the original work she appeared in.
>>

Mikimoto illustrated the novel, so this design should count as the "official" one, rather than the one from the videogames and TGCs.

Also incorrect. There is an illustration of her that appeared in the second edition for the novel (last row, second from the left), made by, perhaps not coincidentally, Haruhiko Mikimoto.
>>
>>23536675
I wouldn't call a rerelease years later the original work exactly but cool. Also leaves a lot of interpretation when it comes to color which is part of the issue with the Gihren's Greed look.

Lacus has more variation within one movie than all the versions of Gigi, anyways.

How is the Zeta novel? I've been reading Define and it's all right but I think the fact they made everything 3x more depressing and extreme is turning me off a little. Not that OG Zeta was fun and games but the sedeka cover intro made it seem like it is...
>>
>>23566452
Did you hear Kamille died earlier in novel, around Rosamia arc while having late stage of mother complex? Does that give you a hint?

But I think of Tomino's novels as horny before depressing, it's not that he didn't get edgy sometimes as well
>>
>>23566496
I thought he was supposed to die in the novels after ramming the the-O because his helmet glass broke and he was too brainfucked to respond via the radio and so fa forces open the cockpit door because she's worried he might be injured but it ends up venting the cockpit's air and kamille suffocates
>>
>>23566452
It was written alongside the show, so it inherits the settings and characters.
Tomino wanted it to be its own thing but it ended up being straight adaptation of anime, however that doesn't mean it's similar.
Novels cover some stuff before episode 1, there are more inner monologues and exposition, some scenes and arcs play out differently.
There are some novel exclusive stuff like Melanie Carbine and Jamitov Hymen being former colleagues, mentions of freemasonry, Kamille and Haman flirting, Sayla's reaction to Char's Day of Dakar speech etc.
Sometimes Tomino references something from anime which you have to assume happened offscreen in the novels too, whether it fits or not.
It's better if you read Zeta novels as a supplementary piece to enhance your knowledge on lore and background details.
I don't think it can stand on its own the way other novels like 0079, BC, HF etc do.

Almost done with 0079, it's comfy so far but it's funny seeing NONE of the psychological stuff from the anime. Amuro is a "trained" soldier so he's not really that anal about people dying or even being sent out multiple times. He even starts leading his own squad and does his own shit. Char is pretty one to one though. Sayla is expanded and she doesn't do any funny stuff like pilot the Gundam. Bright banters a lot with the crew and he's not the out of his head reasonable jerk he is in the show. Mirai is just there. Hayato and Kai are just there too. It's just weird seeing hardly any character drama except for Amuro and Sayla.

My only beef is why the fuck did Amuro nofag Kuzko. I get why he nowayfag'd Fraw because he genuinely didn't see her that way but Kuzko he had some connection but for some reason just decided "NO WAY I AINT HANGING OUT WITH A HOT ARGENTINA WOMAN AND GET LAID SOUNDS TOO GAY FOR ME" wtf.
>>
>>23567081
Any other tips on must reads? I'm a bit meh on 0079. It's a little too heavy in regrating stuff from the background in 0079 that's been beaten into my head multiple times already. I like the drama of 0079 and Zeta TV but I feel like I won't really get those in the novels lol.

Not yet, I'll go check it out. I've just finished OG and I started REALLY fucking loving in near the tail end of the book also I can now call people fucking secondaries and proving these fuckers never read this for saying Amuro dies at the halfway point when it was like page 430-440/479ish. I just really didn't like the ending at all though. Not the fact Hayato and Amuro die. More that Kycilla and Gihren dies and then the next page is literally "AND THEN EVERYONE JOINED ZEON SORTA EXCEPT KAI HE WAS TOO SALTY AND WENT BACK TO THE FEDERATION AND SAYLA JUST SWIMS NAKED ON A BEACH (kek knowing ZZ and Gquuuux it's kinda funny). Like jesus fuck that was rushed as all hell. Felt like Tomino didn't know where to go after killing Amuro and just went "welp main character dead, let's wrap this shit up". I do enjoy the different takes of the cast especially since there's like no character drama at all. I'm thinking of reading the REALLY edgy 0079 novel next but I'll try sentinel/z gundam/gaia gear next. I wanna read something more good before I get into wtf am i even reading tier.
