From what I know, there is the Belin empire with Russian(ZA-08 Zarov), German(ZA-11 Zyclon) and Japanese mechs(upcoming Samurai). The Zabul(ZA-04)(pic related) is the predecessor of the Zarov.

The Califia Federation uses the OCR-22 Yunque(fight type like Dragonar, Windam, Flag) and OCR-24 Acteon, an upcoming knight like MS that resembles the Tallgeese and Gyan.

The Trade Federation also has another MS branch that is low cost with the Buck and Buck II. Buck resembles Gundam AGE grunts like that Zila and Genoace/Adele. Buck is a first generation MS that has also been sold to third parties(Like the Hellion from Gundam 00), not sure if it has been retired from the regular army. The Buck II looks like Nadescio's Aestivalis with more curves.

There is also another Federation that uses Gundam AGE looking grunts. It might be an African Federation.
>>
>>23508280
There are three factions:
Belin Empire
Califia Trade Federation
Another Federation

Lore isn't fleshed out yet, but the MS do function in space.

They mainly took design dues from Kobayashi Makoto, Kondo Kazuhisa and Ebikawa's grunts(Gundam AGE and 30 Minute Missions)

Most kits have a simple, if pleasant to build, inner frame. Very sturdy due to the unique plastic.
They also come with a set of decals, however colored for a specific version of the kit (eg. Yunque only works on gray version).

They are build at home Robot Damashii figures with action figure durability since they use thick ABS for the body and POM for joints, unlike any fragile model kit PS crap out there.

So now Chinese have made build at home robot damashiis(Shiek Mainland) and Metal Builds(Judge/Ruling/Aurora, Motor Nuclear etc) and Metal Robot(KOs like Hi Nu and Destiny).

Shiek Mainland Zarov, Yunque and Zyklon have inner frames. Buck and Zabul don't have inner frames as they wanted to achieve a lower price point with half the number of runners.

If you go early UC there's the Waff and Bugu which are predecessors of the Zaku, there's the Zudah which was it's direct competitor. Later in the war you get Dom test type which is halfway between a Gouf and a Dom, there's the Gelgoog which is kinda Zakuish depending on your tastes.

>>
>>23511630
Not trying to shill, but stating some facts. We know that Gunpla fans don't care about durability because they have never handled preassembled figures and think that Gunpla are comparable which isn't the case. Though, some of the newer HGs from GQuuuuux which are almost fully KPS is a sign of improvement.

Their unique selling point is that they are able to achieve Robot Damashii build quality as a build at home kit. POM is a material used for joints that could retain friction and smooth movement for a long time.

Chinese don't have strong IP so they compete on build quality and low price.

Bandai has strong IP so they rely on strong emotional connection to the characters for those who have seen the anime and played the video games. Funny how new Gunpla fans who don't watch Gundam anime just see the MS as looking cool so I am unsure how easily replaceable are these designs for them.
>>
>>23512467
>Bandai has strong IP so they rely on strong emotional connection to the characters
Lol, a large portion of gundam characters are unlikeable and forgettable. And when it comes to stuff like cyclop mechs, they are jobbers and had literally 0 story content beside appearing for 1 minute then explode. Gundam's strongest aspect is still the design, especially the older ones. They are exotic and weird, which can pander to every types of autists with a huge wallet.

Are any of the Zaku Clones ever considered a threat again after the original TV show?

Seems like most Zaku clones are designed to just lose to the main character or main Gundam.

But in the original TV show, the Zaku was still a threat to the Gundam even up to the midway point of the show. Some Zakus would get up close with a heat hawk or shoot the back of the Gundam with the 180mm cannon.

By character, we were referring to mobile suit design and its lore. Not human characters. Though MS with a named character tend to be prioritised for merchandising.

E.g. A Doven Wolf has its sense of character by being an elite Neo Zeon MS that appeared in the final battle and has the most number of weapons.

GM is the onscreen underdog grunt archetype that turned the tide of the war for the Federation by bringing numerical advantage with economical armaments, also being a physical extension of the Gundam that spans multiple battlefields.

Leo is a grunt that provides baseline spec point of reference in its universe and has been operated by Zechs and Gundam pilots as well.

Gustav Karl and F91 Jegans represents the final machine in the Jegan lineage before the advent of 2nd era MS.

Jeddah, a prototype grunt that Amuro operated.

Chinese can't just create a new mech and expect people to form an emotional connection to them, though conforming to an existing archetype helps. Even superhero franchises rehash a bit of the Batman, Flash archetypes so people could see them new characters with a bit of Batman and Flash in them.
>>
>>23512505
>>23512839
This. If stories and context didn't sell suits, Bandai wouldn't bother making Gundam and everything would be 30 Minute Missions with vague lore alluded to in manuals.
The shows being ads is simplistic. Their real job isn't to show you the cool robot, it's to give you a reason to give a damn about the cool robot.

I personally buy both IP stuff and non-IP stuff. The former is due to emotional connection as I do like Gundam lore very much.

One of my main purpose of buying toys is to create new battles, and also to view a certain MS design in a new angle especially obscure MSV stuff that get very little representation in media(HGUC D Gundam First). This also applies to me buying underutilised characters like Slaughter Dagger and Strike Noir to defeat all of ZAFT so EA will no longer be the underdog.

For non-IP stuff, there is less restriction in terms of factions and pilots and timelines, so I could use them to create any battle.

IP stuff tend to have more restriction but I could recreate hidden offscreen and what-if battles. e.g. If early batches of Light Cannons were at Jaburo fighting Zakus(GQ) and Doms. If Jeddah was formally adopted and used by the Stark Jegan ace, if Amuro used orange Zeta Plus in UC 0088, but it gets to the point where I have to have a certain character in a machine and can't put anyone else in it. So buying grunts is always more fun due to less restriction. The only reason I would buy Freedom Gundam is to get Windams to destroy it.

The Kondo Kazuhisa era fan fiction manga, PC Engine video games, RPG books brought about non canon fan made battles in UC like Return of Zeon. Giren's Greed and GQX did bring that back. Tsurumaki did categorise his work as war fiction, in the same vein as WWII fiction.

The Sheik Mainland stuff aesthetics does allude to that era plus some modern Ebikawa-ness.

My problem with 30 Minute Missions is that they are too building blocky with exposed 3mm ports with no sense of beauty and cohesion. There is no sense of character at all, just generic Sunrise style mechs with a few Front Mission Wanzers.

Having too much lore has too much restriction, having no lore doesn't feel like it serves any purpose. That's why Warhammer 40k they have all their named characters as immortal so they are relevant for any battle.
>>
>>23512858
Another example is Maschinen Krieger. Sure, there is no novel or anime got made, but there is context and world build behind the modelkits, including an official short film. They give you an idea of what this world looks like and the tone it has. 30MM just doesn't have the same level of care to its world building and the aesthetic is just whatever the fuck Ebikawa find it to be cool instead of having a uniformity between the units. It atleast needs an actual manga, or a short film to be more exciting.

Zoids Battle Story was similar, they included some fluff in the back of the box and also had supplementary books on major events in the timeline.

>>23507803
You could play some video games or watch some videos on all the different Zeon mobile suits. There are many different wars in UC and scale of wars have changed as well. There wre 5000-8000 Zakus produced in UC 0079 One Year War, but in UC 0093 Neo Zeon only had 100 Geara Dogas as the conflict was smaller.
>>
>>23513015
It makes me wonder how many Zulus were ever made, considering they are just slightly better dogas
I didn't realize so few existed.
Why did londo bell struggle against char again?
>>
>>23513067
Londo Bell fleet had 30 Jegans at the time.

Federation didn't send their main force.

Full Frontal's Sleeves forces had 100 MS based in Palau, similar size to the Delaz Fleet(70+30 from Cima). Only a fraction were Geara Zulus, the rest were UC 0088 Neo Zeon MS.
>>
>>23513067
Correction:

Londo Bell: Ra Cailum, Clop x 3, MS x 20
Neo Zeon: Rewloola, Musaka x 13, MS x 85

82 Geara Dogas were deployed. 100 were produced.

Don't forget that Londo Bell takes on extra Jegans before heading to intercept Axis, but they probably still have fewer MS overall even after Char probably took some losses during the surprise attack on Luna II.

https://mechatalk.net/viewtopic.php?p=312006&sid=14b054c1aa84e4200a7c7ae5965c7126#p312006
>Londo Bell's ships seem to be double-loaded -- though their rated capacity is only 20 (three Clops with 4 MS each, and the Ra Cailum with 8), during the battle at Axis they deploy a total of 38 MS. These come in two waves -- the ReGZ and 24 Jegans first, followed by Nu and 12 more Jegans.
>the numbers here suggest that the Clops are literally doubled up, with 8 MS apiece, leaving the Ra Cailum to carry an extra six. (3 x 8 + 14 = 38) This is, Mark points out, exactly how we see Clops being used in Victory, and we actually see a shot of the Ra Cailum with six machines strapped to its catapult decks, so that all works out fairly nicely.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply that a show is the only way you could ever do it. I generally don't find 'model for a model's sake' super compelling even with a setting myself, when it's clear the model is the focus and the fluff is justification for it, but that's personal taste of course.
Even if you're buying it to do something silly with it I think Gundam really benefits from the core stories it's built around, particularly UC. Even if you're buying a Zaku to paint it pink and give it bunny ears, you still feel some way about a Zaku, it represents something with more going on behind it than just the shape of the pieces of plastic in your hands.

There's also the difference in sensation between feeling like I'm building a scale model of something and feeling like I'm building a little plastic dude, for lack of a better way to put it. The RGM-89 Jegan exists outside of the MG kit I'm currently assembling of it. In fact, the kit had to make some tough choices between accuracy and articulation in order to be a Jegan. I don't mean to keep picking on 30MM but an Alto doesn't mean anything. It's nothing beyond parts in a box that look kinda cool when you put them together. It has no scale beyond what's convenient for HG cross-compatibility, no sense of accurate or inaccurate portrayal, it's hollow.
A Jegan is a gestalt made up of model kits, art, films, shows, novels, manga, MSVs and so on, and other than lacking a real-world counterpart isn't all that different from a model of a Sherman or a Tomcat in that regard.
Excuse the light schizoposting, I've just always struggled to put the sensation into words.
>>
>>23513237
Yeah I get you, if a kit exists just as a model, you can't think of it in terms other than that model, someone points to it on a shelf and all you can say is "it's a model I bought, it has X feature I guess" whereas if you have a model of for example a Gouf custom you can load up the video of Norris Packard going ham to show anyone why it's cool, you can get an Ez-8 and make a diorama, there's built in appeal.
>>
>>23513665
If I had to try and really boil it down I think it's the difference between 'a model of X' versus 'a model' that makes the difference in my brain.
>>
>>23513665
Would this also apply to Gunpla fans who are non-Gundam fans? Perhaps they like it because there is potential lore that they have not read or know that it is a strong IP so they favour it over a non-IP product?

There are also so many Gunpla fans who aren't Gundam fans these days.
>>
>>23513687
Yeah, in those cases I think even just the sense that there's something more behind it helps. Same for if you've ever picked up a kit for an AU you've never touched or specific show you've never seen. You might not know how or where it fits in but there's still a sense that it probably does.
>>
>>23508035

> I generally don't find 'model for a model's sake' super compelling even with a setting myself, when it's clear the model is the focus and the fluff is justification for it, but that's personal taste of course.
Even Gundam itself has a handful of "model for model's sake", especially Sentinel. Some people call it a novel, but it is hardly a novel in truth, just some snipets Model Graphix put into their monthly magazine. There is no official manga or anime, even its connection to UC is muddy at best. However, it is still one of the most popular Gundam side story and its MGs are some of the most popular kits for collectors to hunt. And i will argue that 30MM has more media content than Sentinel, they have a handful of CGI animation PVs and their lore is being updated with each new products. However, there is no emotion to be found from 30MM. With Sentinel, you can like some of the characters, or atleast liking ALICE. With Maschinen Krieger, you atleast like Robert Bush from the short film. A model kit needs an emotional attatchment to you and it is not necessarily from a ton of media. You can like the most low efforted and mundane thing it originated from and that all what is matters.
>>
>>23514378
Sentinel also gets a bit of a boost because of how it's stapled to an existing work. Not super dissimilar to how an MSV variant of something that doesn't appear on-screen might still resonate more than if that design was presented entirely in a vacuum in a UC-free world.
>>
>>23514385
Most of people don't like Kyokai Senki, even though it has 2 seasons of anime and a web spin off. If the context and the style of the world alone don't click then you will feel nothing, no matter how much media they churn out.
>>
>>23514398
This is true. MS ERA manages to be compelling enough that people sometimes call it the secret fourth post-CCA OVA and it's not even a piece of narrative fiction. It's entirely riding on style and its place within the context of other works.
>>
>>23513164
>Char probably took some losses during the surprise attack on Luna II.

There's no on screen evidence that Char took any pilot losses. In fact, Luna II 's defense was so comically bad. The Federation lost horribly to a much smaller force. It wasn't a surprise either. The Federation knew they were coming and the fleet was deployed in case Char tried anything funny. Yet they still lost!

I also seriously question why Neo Zeon and Sleeves are so weak. Luna II is the Federation's largest storage facility of their nuclear weapons. Char took those weapons. That means Neo Zeon is a now a nuclear power, and has even more nuclear weapons than the Federation (at least until the Federation makes more). These are the type of nukes that Gubdam Gp02 used to destroy an entire fleet.

Yet the Federation doesnt change their policy or treat Neo Zeon as a nuclear power. I can't tell if the Federation is courageous or just plain stupid. Char (and later Full Frontal) could destroy the Federation cities with some well placed nukes.
>>
>>23514498
I always thought it was funny that Londo Bell was firing nukes at Axis and Char's fleet during the movie, but Char's fleet never fired nukes back. By all accounts, Char's fleet had much more nukes. They could have drowned Londo Bell in nuclear fireballs and wiped them out.
>>
>>23514631
I think it just goes to show that Londo Bell never truly had a chance if Char wanted to win without honor or mercy.

Londo Bell only had like 3 ships. Char had little over a dozen ships.

Char let Londo Bell get the victory because he wanted to fight Amuro in a fair fight.

But I think deep down Char was suicidal and wanted to die in combat.

Like death by cop, but instead it was "death by Amuro."
>>
>>23514674
The way I see it his plan was to force humanity into space, but also drag Amuro into the spotlight as the man who killed Char to make him take up a leadership role. Char wouldn't live long after the axis drop either way, whatever would be left of the federation would all be gunning for him and his forces would've been exhausted.
>>
>>23515283
Although Char stealing all those nukes would leave his fleet a serious threat even after the movie was over.
>>
>>23514498
it was literally an extinction level threat and the feds couldn't be arsed to bring forth all their forces and maximum effort, they sure as fuck wasn't going to care about the political ramifications of having achieved nuclear weapons. shit, they sometimes just detonate MS as improvised nukes or threaten the use of such, in multiple shows.

I'm more or less willing to bet not all of the nukes were in usable condition or even compatible with their missile launchers. It could have decades old nuclear warheads that they might not have detailed schematics for or have compatible arming or control systems. There's real life documented incidents of nuclear weapons being lost in transit and not detonating, as well as some that have failed to arm. Without a working delivery system they best could do in a short amount of time was just store the nukes on a ship and let it fall on earth along with axis to scatter the radioactive material.

Well, I mean if they really wanted to, it should have been easy as fuck to just recreate the OYW Apsalus with improved tech just and use that to incinerate cities and drop nukes. The Zoon from Sentinel and the Divinidad from Crossbone had more or less the same concept and almost made it into the atmosphere. Or if they could steal the nukes and hold out for a couple of months, retrofit the warheads onto new missiles.
>>
>>23515881
>shit, they sometimes just detonate MS as improvised nukes or threaten the use of such, in multiple shows.
Yeah but an MS exploding is much smaller compared to the nuke that Gp02 used during 0083 that blew up 75% of the Federation space fleet. And Char stole all of those nukes. I'm not sure why the Feds aren't freaking out.
>>
>>23515920
>>23515881
What even is the deal with nukes in UC Gundam? Why does Char need to steal nukes from Luna 2? Doesn't Zeon have nuclear weapons he can use? I'm sure they would be more sympathetic to his cause and smuggle him nukes. I know Zeon had them. M'Quve threatened to nuke the Federation in the original series, and a nuke was almost used during the 0080 anime but was stopped at the last moment. So it's not like nukes are rare.
>>

They are rare, just not extremely so. Killing trying to use one in 0080 is considered a big deal and he and M'quve are both operating during active warfare and not, you know, after Zeon lost and surrendered and was effectively disarmed (which would likely involve surrendering any strategic grade nuclear weapons). Maybe Axis or some Zeon remnant fleet hiding out would've had some, but from how 0080 and 0083 portray them, they are far from standard loadouts.

But don't mobile suits run on nuclear reactors? That means mobile suit technicians and maintenance people need to do maintenance on mobile suits reactors. That means they need to have spare nuclear materials to do this like uranium or plutonium or whatever highly radioactive material they use in UC.

That means it would be easy for colonies to refine these nuclear materials into weapons grade material used in nukes.

Plus you are dealing with the issues of scavengers taking nuclear reactors from shot down mobile suits on the battlefield.

MS and ships run on fusion reactors. There is no fissile material in any MS outside its weapons loadout. Power reactors in general function very differently than bombs and knowing how to make one work is a very long way from knowing how to build the other.

Taking the time and effort to spin up your own production would also risk giving your enemies more political ammunition to leverage against you and more time to do it in. Neo-Zeon only really had a chance because Londo Bell was the only group of the EFSF taking it seriously.

I've only watched one gundam series all the way through and ironically I hate it's mechs, I have plenty of OYW and zeta gunplay despite giving up part way through both.

Usually the point of a nuclear reactor powering a vehicle or ship is because it can run for a REALLY long time without refueling. Today's nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers refuel once every 20 years or something like that. Refueling the reactor wouldn't be a regular maintenance thing, Zeon remnants are stirring up shit years after the original war but it's not like they need or even have a way to refill the nuclear fuel for their MS. They also USUALLY don't bother to repair a damaged suit that's got half it's torso missing and the reactor exposed, they'll just replace it the same way that in regular war it's not worth repairing a wrecked tank with an engine that's been on fire... unless it's some kind of hero machine or an irreplaceable thing.

Minovsky nuclear reactors don't produce any radiation or require radioactive fuel. The lore handwaved it as part of the discovery of the minovsky particle that reshaped physics and could be produced using a specific reactor design that uses Helium-3 for fuel. They made portable reactors reliable enough to be commercially sold and integrated into anything everywhere even in civilian equipment. For all the societal problems that the UC timeline has, at least they have clean, abundant energy everywhere. Old nuclear warheads still exist (Cameron tells Bright in CCA that the warheads that Side 6 are providing are antiques) but the minovsky nuclear power systems are clean. When they fight in cities, they're worried about reactors exploding not because of radiation, but just because of the destruction it would cause.

Then I really don't understand the issue here. With unlimited energy, most of the problems are solved in UC.

They could build massive colonies dedicated to farming. With robots handling tasks 24/7 (This already happens in some states in the USA. Although California banned robots on farms for some unknown reason). Growing food wouldn't be an issue. They could even do massive vertical farms with controlled lighting (which is very energy intensive). The colonies literal have climate control yes? Then farming colonies could solve hunger.

The Earth could build unlimited Desalination plants and provide fresh water to the entire planet. Powering irrigation wouldn't be a problem. Hook up a Minovsky reactor and have unlimited power. They could irrigate crops without worrying about powering pumps. They could push fresh water to anywhere on the planet and create viable Farmland.

Cold storage wouldn't be a problem with unlimited power. Now you farm unlimited surplus and keep food stored without worry.

Transportation and logistics wouldn't be a problem. Just electrify your fleet. With unlimited power there's no problem. I mean could keep going on and on.

I just don't understand why people are starving and poor like we see in Gundam Unicorn at the Neo Zeon Sleeves Headquarters. If anything they should be fat and overweight because there's too much food.
