Is this anime any good? I saw someone compare it to Evangelion and that caught my attention. Is this comparison absurd? I want to watch it but I don't want to waste my time with a shitty anime.
>>23514932>I saw someone compare it to Evangelion and that caught my attention. Is this comparison absurd? IThe comparison is flawed. Its more gundam 0079 than eva in set up.
>>23514932It sucks, you should watch a cool anime for cool kids like you, like rick and morty or avatar the last airbender.
Watch it over darling in the trash.
If you were recced it, it means you have no will of your own to find shows. Get out.
Yes, they are both about a 14 year old boy who needs to get over themselves.
>>23514932I've heard it compared to Gundam X. If it's anything like Eva it's in the the plot having a similar solution to reach ultimate understanding with one another
>>23514932its very boring and not much happens in it. None of the main cast are likable, so it's like Eva in that senseAnimation and music are good but that's it. The show is a waste of time, all style no substance
>>23514932I have watched about 14 episodes so far and I think it's good.
>>23515143>None of the main cast are likableThis is a complaint that I've seen thrown around a lot for a lot of different shows. With E7 it's more true than usual. They're not all awful, nor are they implausibly cruel (in the sense that their cruelty is the kind of thing you'll see actual people do sometimes), but they're basically all unpleasant dicks. The animation is good enough to carry it for a while. I would probably not watch it again.
I remember a coworker telling me that I'm not a real mecha fan because I haven't watched Eureka SevenI watched it and didn't like itIn retrospect he was a dickhead. Fuck you Nick and fuck your game design "company"
>>23514932It's pretty good, stay away from the sequels and movies they are utter trash.
>>23515143>All style no substanceStyle is a part of substance, you midwit.
>>23515168he was right, you sound like a real secondary
>>23514932It's mid. Music is good and the mecha are certainly unique, but it's very clearly in that normalfag niche of "It's le mecha show but the focus is on le characters" shit they spout. Very unlikeable cast and it meanders alot.
>>23515069People compare it to Gundam X because of the romance element.Which isn't a bad comparison, but Eureka Seven has way more Gundam and Macross in its DNA than Eva.>>23515143>>23515161That's one thing I liked about E7, the cast is a bunch of misled people who work together for a greater good. Also they aren't all assholes, it's really just Holland and Talho and they grow out of it by the end.
>>23514932>Reddit recommend blow in

I remember despising it when it was airing, but it might have been due to the dub and me watching a completely random episode because I was waiting for something else.
>>23515852The dub's adequate. The second thing was probably a problem though.
>>23514932The only Eva comparison is that the main girl is just a Rei clone
>>23515856Maybe it was just the specific episode(s) where the protag sounded a bit whiny for good reasons I didn't know about.
The thing about the characters in Eureka Seven is that some are pretty realistic teenagers so they can be dumb and whiny fuckils. And their leader is a man child. But I found Renton endearing. And all of them really. And they all grow as the show goes on and I ended up loving it a lot. They finally get their shit together. And they weren't that unlikable they were just going through shit. The revelation of Eureka's past in the military was one of my favourite moments in the show.It gets into cool scifi shit which I liked too. And the music and world were so colorful.
>>23514932>want to watch it but I don't want to waste my time with a shitty anime.Watch it. Just don't watch anything after the tv series.
>>23514932Kind of. The series is good, but not without pacing issues. The movie is better and is a better point of comparison for Evangelion.
>>23514932I think its the perfect anime. But you have to be in the right vibe. Very comfy but kind of depressing adventure story. It's not very actiony but it is pretty.
Weird question. When somebody says a character isn't likeable what does that mean? That they have too many flaws? I always thought characters were supposed to have flaws to make them realistic. Is it that these flaws aren't well balanced enough with positive traits?I am thinking about a lot of prestige Western TV like Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and Mad Men and wondering what makes an unlikeable lead vs a fully realized anti-hero.
>>23514932Yeah, it's good. Just stop after the last episode and don't bother with the stuff after.
>>23516682In this case it's the former. E7 is very well written but the Gekko State are a bunch of jackasses. But they also grow up.
>>23514932I liked it for the most part. It's definitely a Bones show; there's interesting worldbuilding that never gets fully fleshed out, beautiful designs and animation, and the story absolutely falls to shit towards the end leaving you wondering what the fuck even happened. They're all like that. All things said, I've never seen a Bones show I didn't like. You should watch it.
>>23516567>I think its the perfect animei thought the first half was stronger & more compelling than the second
>>23516682When I say a character isn't likable, I mean that I have no sympathy for the character and I also don't find the character entertainingIt's not a question of flaws. Light Yagami is a morally repulsive character with almost nothing but flaws, but his over the top behavior is funny so I like himE7 does not have a character like that in the main cast (Anemone arguably is but she's a side character)On the other hand, you have a character like D-Boy from Tekkaman Blade. This is the type of character that E7 tried and failed to create several times over. D-Boy is a rough, anti-social guy, but he's a dangerous half-monster who knows he'll have to personally kill off his remaining family and is slowly losing his memories and dragging other people into danger. You can understand where he's coming from and it's admirable how he tries to be a hero even with so many burdensThe characters of E7 neither bear that kind of personal tragedy nor do they have any kind of noble or meaningful goal, They really don't give us much reason to overlook their unpleasant behavior so we can start to care about them and their story.
>>23517916>and the story absolutely falls to shit towards the end leaving you wondering what the fuck even happenedWhat did you find so confusing about it? The only part I didn't and can't understand was how too many organisms would cause the world to end (seriously how the fuck does that work?) but everything else with the hivemind coral was pretty straight forward and I really enjoyed it.
>>23518304>The characters of E7 neither bear that kind of personal tragedy nor do they have any kind of noble or meaningful goal, They really don't give us much reason to overlook their unpleasant behavior so we can start to care about them and their story. What? They're all in rebellion against the corrupt government. How's that not a novel goal? And most of the major characters have tragic backstories. I guess the show just didnt work for you but I had the opposite reaction.
It's the best Gundam series in the last 25 yearsIt's the best Macross series period
>>23518314It's Trappar, the off brand minovsky particle the scub naturally produces. The trapper transmits thoughts as energy, that's how the coral communicates. That energy can ignite, or even explode in the case of the Seven Swell effect, and the ultimate form of this is Summer of Love event. During that event so much energy gathers it tears a hole in the fabric of space time, this is how Nirvash is able to ferry the coralians to another world. The limit of questions is a massive scale version of the of Summer of Love, when it nearly happened it created a hole in space time that is persistent (The Great Wall linking the upper crust to inner Earth), a full blown Limit of Questions event would basically flush everything across the universe in a big explosion.

>>23514932There’s a few Eva jokes in E7, like there’s a scene where Renton gets told he better not ejaculate over a women’s comatose body. But it’s not really like Eva at all. It has a little Nerve, SEELE corporate espionage and a-morale experimentation on godlike otherworldly beings but it’s never as much in forefront like in Eva
>>23518314it's not really a reason, it's the universal law that underpins the entire show and its consequences spiral into everything else. standard scifi

>Don't meet your heroes the anime.jpgA problem with E7 is that the supporting cast is realistically irrational at times, like they are just dicks. But the show doesn't really give them enough scenes for us to forgive their dickness and it just feels like bullying for no fucking reason. Which is realistic but can be narratively unsatisfying, especially when the show wants you to root for them to save the world. All the tormenting does make the little victories that Renton gets from time to time endearing even if they are as small as rubbing shoulders with your crush.

>>23521687I'm tired of this /co/ meme. It's a six or seven out of ten at best, but because cartoons have practically nothing, people treat it like the second coming of Christ despite it not being able to hold its ground outside of the cartoon medium.>For the ending, we're going to make up some third bullshit option between staying true to your pacifist ideals and sparing the Fire Lord or killing him to ensure peaceFuck off. I've seen endings that weren't half as retarded get way more shit for that.
>>23522930The original members from the SOF and whoever joined them are quickly established as incredibly flawed, and Holland gets exposed as a deadbeat as early as episode 3, but there are lots of scenes that develop the nuance of him and Talho, but not much for the rest of the crew. They give Gidget a great rapport with Eureka later on though.
>>23528389Hi-Evo 2 and 3 are solid.
>>23521687its n.a.r.u.t.o levels of good...
I liked the original TV series but I never hear opinions about AO or the movies are they any good?
>>23542009Opinions tend to range between "they are not" and "they are actively hateful towards everything that people liked about the original show and especially its fans".
>>23542009Besides the soundtrack, no. In the original anime, the staff, mostly the female staff, pushed hard enough that they did not do the writer's super el super tragico depresso maximus ending and instead did a happy one. Since then, every single piece of E7 media that has come out has tried to destroy the original series in one way or another. The manga had the original ending which sucks balls, and the side character romance was worse too. AO had a literal retcon cannon in it, the original series simply never happened. The movies are one of those weird re-sequel things and he does the same character assassination bullshit. He has spent like twenty fucking years of butthurt on this series.
>>23542009AO, the direct sequel, comes back to all the way to dewey being right with total coral death was the only real option and takes place in alt universe earth where they fight the magic universe police niggas who are angry that coral and do space/time warping bullshit. As a show it starts out ok and just kinda explodes near the end(after a steady decline) with too many retarded plot points that werent really resolvable.POketful of rainbows(the retelling of the original e7) was rather awful by doing things like making Nirvash a plushie mascot character that meows.Hi-evo is a weird mixed bag because all the movies are basically unrelated and the most enjoyment possible is to just go into them thinking theyre standalone sci-fi works, and they do that fairly well honestly. Dumb takes just like AO about meta narratives make people reasonably upset though. All of them have great prodution values and are worth a wath desu. (but they get retarded)
>>23514932G Reco is better
>>23544840Ghibli-like
>>23532434I think only Gonzy, Jobs, Woz and Hap are the only ones who don't get an episode where they are part of the focus. Hap is advising Holland enough that you get their relationship. Gonzy is just sitting in the background until he is revealed to be a Coralion.>They give Gidget a great rapport with Eureka later on though. After Moondoggie and Renton had their bonding over Renton being the new newbie. Gidget mentions part of why she sought out Eureka was a bit jealous of Talho and Hilda. They fleshed out the dynamics of the rest of the crew pretty well through smaller scenes.
>>23544884It could have been if it was a 50 episode series instead of 26.
>>23544840And yet Pocketful and Astral Ocean were better than the first series. We need to be honest, the pacing in E7 was garbage that dragged on way longer than it should have, fat needed to be trimmed. That and it didn't have enough action scenes. Pocketful and AO had more action scenes and by default were better (also the music in those weren't annoying). It's time to admit sometimes original entries are not gold standards, just the first and nothing else. Kind of like how everyone praises Godzilla 1954, but if we're being honest with all it's mistakes it wouldn't be top 10 as it had too many technical errors even by 50s standards and later entries just did things better.
>>23551056The fat could have been trimmed off Ao much more easily to make a much more sound narrative.Truth was an utterly worthless character and a walking 'whatever the writers think is a convenient ability to have this week'. The ending with apparently this all being precipitated by the original world being obliterated by scub coral(but thats ok, because now eureka doesnt have to sacrifice herself to save it!) added nothing but spite for the original. Writing wise both pocketful of rainbows and AO were just a mess that couldve used a great deal of trimming, but i agree the music was better in AO at least.
>>23520863lol
>>23517916>>23518314>>23521443>>23522913>>23518823Eureka Seven is partially inspired by the book Blood Music and a very outdated idea of the Observer Effect. The "Observer Effect" a scientific theory that states you can't measure something without interfering with it. For example you can't take the tire pressure of a care without letting some air out of the tire to measure it.The idea is that when you have too many observers taking observations at the same time reality becomes unstable and collapses. Because the Corallians were an alien hivemind the amount of "Observers"(Or consciousnesses) became way too concentrated in one space and reality was starting to break down. This is what was going on in those episodes where Renton got sucked into the Corallian. The show ends with Renton, Eureka and the Nirvash getting enough of the Corallians leaving to stop this collapse from happening.
>>23522930Matthiew and Hilda were pretty good to Renton form the start.
>>23552168Oh and the corallians might've realized this was happening and tried to figure out a way to coexist with the humans which is what Sakuya was for. Eureka was Sakuya 2.0Renton and Eureka's relationship and them eventually having a child is supposed to be the main solution for this.Eventually hundreds of years after the series Humans and Corallians would have racemixed enough to create a new kind of consciousness that can allow both races to continue to exist.

>>23514932it has some good moral messages i think but besides that i couldn't really get attached to the characters or mecha the mecha on their own is pretty okay for kawamori's work. the surfboard thing is sort of a unique way of expressing movement through the air with wind resistance but there's parts of it that make you wish you were just looking at normal mecha action. the mecha and setting conflicts are also largely pushed aside at the end to just have a happy love story ending so if you get into what little there is it ends up getting kinda disappointing. if you're there to learn some morals you'll like it, but i can't really recommend the show otherwise
>>23551056>the pacing in E7 was garbage that dragged on way longer than it should have, fat needed to be trimmed. That and it didn't have enough action scenes.What.....the fuck is this shit? This is not even true. Like..at all.
>>23559601Honestly I could barely stand the stretch between the first Anemone encounter and the Ray Charles fight, I kept watching just for the small hints of her subplot
Yeah it's good
>>23532434One thing is that they seem so flawed and unprofessional that they don't give the impression of a former elite military outfit, and none of them (except possibly Holland) seem like having anything like the abilities to back that up. Their behaviour is more like clique stoners than air jocks and the latter would make more sense. The Izumo crew was much more likeable and interesting that I wish they sunk gekkostate earlier on. It seemed like they changed sides to let the good guys have at least a few likeable characters for once.
>>23518823Requiem of Rubicon Ayreka 6
>>23561237I mean, the behavior of soldiers in some military dramas isn't too far from removed from how Gekkostate behaves, you could chalk it up their unprofessional nature to being as how they cope with their former lives as a butchering squad which is what I did on my most recent rewatch.
>>23559601You are replying to duel.
>>23561237i dont think anyone other than holland and talho were actually ex military though, or at least i came to the same conclusion as you but since none of the other members were shown to be military or know who the fuck charles/ray were i assumed they joined later.

It doesn't really make you like them, you just learn to tolerate because you have to.
>>23561237Yeah they felt more like they were just jaded rebellious teenagers, which I guess is what you're supposed to think given their public image.
