Why didn't you try to understand G-Reco, /m/?
>>23515978Because it didn't try to understand its own audience.
>>23515978We do? /m/ is the only forum that gives g-reco some nuance perspectives.
>>23515978I did. it was pretty straight forward road trip adventure story with multiple factions. frankly, I was disappointed that it wasn't as challenging as it was made it out to be by people.I want to watch the films, is EG good? I don't trust him.
>>23516018>is EG good?For this one? It's fine.
I did. I liked it a lot.People get too hung up on all the extra factions that pretty much just exist to hammer on that pretty much everyone besides the heroes are making wild grabs for power due everyone deciding to blow off the technological taboos around the same time.Once you understand that it's really not particularly overwhelming.
>>23515978>The generation that grew up after the war was long over doesn't understand how awful war is.It wasn't difficult to understand.
>>23515978I understood just fine
>>23515978It was just bad, it wasn't hard to understand.

>>23515978wow! cool robot!
>>23517223This but unironically
>series has 8 separate factions by the end>anons pretend they didn’t need to look up info online to understand the showLol
>>23515978I'm a little retardedCool worldbuilding though. I had no idea what the fuck I was watching but there was something there.
After watching the TV and movies back to back I managed to grasp most of the plot and details and think G-Reco is a deeply interesting story about how conflict and war is informed and justified by the grand narratives that different cultures perpetuate amongst themselves and how those narratives that justify war must be overcome by crossing cultural boundaries and taboos. The main example of this is the narrative around the origin and control of the photon batteries shifting as the main characters cross from the territory of one faction to another. First photon batteries are controlled by capital tower, then it turns out capital tower merely distributes the batteries that arrive from Towasanga space who actually produces them, then Towasanga turns out to be a middle man for Venus globe who actually produces the batteries, and you see the pretext the faction leaders use to wage war become muddied and break down in the process until they are reduced to mere greed and ambition.Theres also the worlds religious aspect, how the divine "promised land" from the perspective of earthnoids is space, and how its the other way around for spacenoids, and yes, the shift in Bellris motivation as the person he was fighting for goes from his love interest to his sister, which causes him to re-examine his purpose within the war.I say that but does anyone understand what Cumpa Rusita's motivation was? He thought spacenoids were rotting politically and spiritually from a lack of war but he detests earthnoids for being primitive war mongers? Did anyone make a connection I fail to see?
>>23518011Cumpa was from Venus Globe, and viewed the mutations going on in the population there as a sign of the degradation of humanity. He thinks war will strengthen humanity through survival of the fittest.
>>23517432You don't. Because that's not the important part. Really you people get so hyper fixated on minutia everything else just goes right past you.
>>23518404Thematic media literacy is dead with anifags
>>23515978It's a shame so many people simply aren't good enough for shows like G Reco, GQuX, Cross Agne or Getter
>>23515978A/Z was better
>>23516192And it's not even that confusing once you remember the factions. While they aren't one-to-one of course, you have>Ameria, an Earth faction that wants to make moves on space(Federation)>Towasanga, a Space faction that wants to make moves on earth (Zeon)>Capital Army, a faction with powerful legal connections (Titans, A-Laws)>G-IT Labs, a faction that builds all the latest and fanciest technology (Anaheim, SNRI)>Rayhunton faction/ Megafauna, a rag-tag group with people from every faction trying to keep the setting from burning down (AEUG, Freeden, Three Ship Alliance)
>>23518011He's a big hypocrite that saw Earthnoids as primitive for their warfare (which he partially instigated as well) but saw war as something good for Spacenoids.Basically like how Treize talks about the tragedy of war but assassinates all the peaceful people and surrounds himself with warmongers and war criminals.

I feel like there's a certain issue with audiences now where they just get so hyper fixated on lord or world building elements that they can scarcely pay attention to the actual plot ones. It's always complaining about all the factions and the background stuff. The main plot is very simple and straight forward. Megafuana crew questions the why of the world and seeks out answers. That everyone is fighting and getting caught up in things is sort of the point. Very few people question the why.

I dont read them much at all but from what I've gotten from cultural osmosis the way they obsess about canon and need crises to fix canon reminds me of what you're describingMaybe whatever was making comic book nerds autistic about this shit just spread. People tend to understand nuance and figurative and metaphorical thematic etc stuff a lot less. Plot is literal. Characters can be literal but are complicate. When the plot dont matter people get mad and dont like it because they think they need to understand it. But once you stop trying to understand every single big of minutia you actually understand what you're watching.
I didn't get this show at all and hated it when it was airing. Then I saw brain powerd this year and finally I understood . Not just this but all of Tomino.

>>23534399The whole Crisis thing gets over stated. DC has only rebooted twice since the 1930s and one got rolled backed pretty quickly. >But once you stop trying to understand every single big of minutia you actually understand what you're watching. This is always what I try to tell people. Don't worry about it. Because while people do joke about the years of canon and continuity it's not actually that confusing or even complicated if you just sit down and read it. Oh it's a lot to explain and if you try to take it in all at once it's going to be a nutty but all this shit happened over the course of years. If you were to, for example, pick up any Marvel Epic Collection or DC Finest, I promise you with 100 percent absolute certainty you will understand it. Comics were, and still are, episodic in nature. The continuity and history are nice and they do add dimension but they're not required. Once you accept that there IS a history you don't really need to know what it is. You can figure things out via context. If Mongol shows up looking to get revenge on Superman you don't really need to know specifically why he's out for blood because the context is clear. It's honestly rather annoying because you can ask any comic fan and there's a high probability they didn't start from the very beginning of them. Everyone in my age group (low forties) most likely started with some random issue already in the hundreds. In fact Editor in Chief, Big Jim Shooter held the stance that EVERY comic is potentially someone's first. This didn't mean there wasn't ongoing stories and plot. It didn't mean there was no continuity and these were throw away. It just meant they were written in a way that was easy to get into. And it is easy. You just need to do it.

One of the episodes was literally named "sound of newtypes" and is about bellri getting spooked by the sensation of death after killing rockpie who is implied to be one also. It also happens to him elsewhere in the series. Raraiya is also a newtype. They are still around but very rare and no one has a word for them anymore so that people dont really distinguish them from other humans at all.
>>23560344I've only watched the 3rd movie, but is the G-Self not just only letting Newtypes move it? I thought that was what was implied, especially since Bell was sensing emotions from the princess.
>>23560348No, its based on the Rayhunton code with Raraiya as the only exception so she could take the suit to earth where the resistance that made the G-Self hoped she would meet Bellri and Aida. It scans the Iris of the pilot for some pattern specific to the Rayhunton family and only lets those pilot it. Raraiya is registered as the only other person that can use it I guess. No Newtype stuff involved, its a coincidence that Raraiya is one also.
>>23560352Raraiya is a newtype?
>>23560449She can use the G-Lucifers Psycommnu weapons and during the final battle when she goes to stop the Ameria fleet she says she can tell what the Amerian soldiers are thinking and how they treat war through presumably Newtype telepathyIts not so important anyway. 20 minutes into movie 3I'm so lost right now with all the different factions and I don't even understand the status quo and especially the SCALE of the world (earth). How many countries are there and how much is the earth population then?Let me refresh my understanding...1. So the Earth is under an authoritarian rule of Capital Territory for a long time (1000+ years?) where all the nations get their energy/battery handout quota and halt technological advancement.2. A country that doesn't like this, Ameria and its Space Pirate fleet attacked the space elevator... for what purpose? using G-Self that somehow fell into their hand from the sky (+ Raraiya) that for some reason only Aida could pilot.3. Bellri and co managed to capture G-Self, but later decided to save Aida (for what reason?) and Belri + Noredo ended up joining the Space Pirate so casually. for some reason, Belri could also activate G-Self.4. Capital Army pursued the Pirate to recapture G-Self(?) and they kept fighting each other until they didn't, for whatever reason.5. Now the Capital Army and Pirate are moving together to go to Sankt Port.... for what? why are they allied now?6. and then there's this mysterious Towasanga place where they manufactured the batteries, and also the Gundams? idk man it's so confusing.
>>23561227Capital doesn't rule, it just is highly influential because of its monopoly on the cell distrubution and the ritual and spiritual aspects of earth inhabitants. They're more like the medieval Vatican than a ruler.America and Gondwana ware fighting, which Capital doesn't care about apart from the fact they want in or control of the cells to get the upper hand in their war.The swapping sides and changing alliances is actually pretty historical; people are just too used to modern era conflicts in media, but even then there's a bunch of switching side politics that can happen.

>>23561407>>23561412>no explanation
>>23515978I understood it, the characters were just boring
>>235612271. No, the Capital Territory is just the north South America/Central American region the Capital Tower holds. They have the space elevator, so they're in charge of receiving and distributing photon batteries, which makes them very influential, but that doesn't mean they control the world. 2. Ameria wants to probe the Capital Tower and then capture it to monopolize batteries. The "pirates" is just a pretense for the country to claim innocence when the pirates are inevitably identified as Amerian citizens. It's similar to Corsairs or like the Vietcong (which was confirmed to be a NVA operation). The government gets to wash their hands of the matter by saying they're just pirates, not military. 3. Bellri wants to help Aida at the prisoner's tower the first time because he fell for her. But the second time, he joins her on the Megafauna because he puts it together that she's actually an Ameria soldier, and he comes to believe that his growing rapport with Colonel Cumpa is Cumpa entrusting him with a secret mission to figure out what the Amerians are doing. He ends up spying on the Amerian space fleet's movements from space, right before his fight with Dellensen. But that mission is something Bellri imagined in his head. You have to infer this from both the stuff Bellri overhears, as well as what he says and thinks, as well as getting into his head a little bit, because none of this is stated outright but is somewhat implied in the dialogue like Bellri thinking "so she really is Amerian military," and telling Noredo "the Colonel is testing us," and other stuff that suggests he's getting suspicious of Aida while also imagining a special story for himself.4. The Capital Army is a newly formed organization under Cumpa, mainly from Capital Guard members, who are glorified space elevator mechanics. They're people who barely understand what a military is and they're a mess of an organization only held together by Cumpa.
>>235612275. Yeah they work together. At that point it's more or less confirmed that the Megafauna is an Amerian military ship. The Capital Army, under Cumpa, is like a semi-autonomous organization in the Capital Territory. They're not directly aligned with the Capital Tower, for which Wilmit (Bellri's mom) is the director of. She goes around Cumpa and meets with Aida's dad, who's an Amerian military bigshot and they decide Ameria and the Tower will address the threat from space together. Capital Tower at this point has two factions, the Army and the normal Tower operations, including the Guard which characters like Kerbes belongs to. There's also space pope, but he's mainly just a figurehead. Technically the Army has the Capital Territory's civilian government prime minister on their side, which is why they're so powerful and well funded, but Bellri's mom is the actual tower, as in the space elevator's, operations director so she has a lot of influence too. And the Guard seem to be on her side even if they're just using old MS mainly meant for maintenance.6. Towasanga is not where the batteries are manufactured. They're just the main delivery hub in space. It's like how UPS might deliver from one central hub to another, and then have USPS or DHL do the last mile delivery. The Capital Tower is the last mile delivery from Sankto Porto to Earth. G-Reco doesn't explain everything you need to know up front. Some things get explained or will only make sense in hindsight when you have more information. The narrative is like the characters' understanding of their world, it's not omniscient.

Also, goddamn, the fight scene between Bellri and Dellensen was ass. The ending scene for that episode is the best scene in the show so far, though.

When something is particularly odd, it's more editing or dilaogue, some visual choice, just falling completely flat (the ending to episode 9 is a good example of this) and wondering why they'd go for that. I did audibly "what" when Bellri proclaimed he found love and isn't going to die when he launches with Torque Pack for the first time. The (familiar) reminder of Bellri's infatuation with Aida a moment prior didn't prepare me for that. This is the most interesting part of the narrative so far somehow, but how Bellri's character is utilized is strange to me. He feels so undercooked due to the lack of emphasis on certain things. An obvious example is the situation with Dellensen where it just amounts to poor usage of a cliche and cribbing of past Gundam that might as well have not even happened. The next episode has Aida almost shooting down his mother's glider entirely because she's hot headed, but the imprint of that event seemingly has no bearing on his reaction to any of it amongst other things. Given the dynamic and history between Aida and Bellri, the empathy she shows him after killing Dellensen and Bellri's efforts at penance for killing Cahill, it was a missed opportunity. This is just my impression after 10 episodes.
>>23560056Why did she do it? I understand Luin secretly wanting Bellri dead all these years but why did Manny try to kill him in cold blood even after Mask already dumped her for Barara
>>23566840for luin's sake.>even after Mask already dumped her for Bararamaybe that emboldened her.
>>23566840I can forgive her for turning on her friends. I can forgive her for even trying to kill them. Cutting her hair, however was a crime to the universe.

>>23570486And no, the Capital Tower just controls all the energy/oil distribution to Earth and it's space elevator is in South America.
- - END - -Movie 5 was probably the most exciting Gundam episode I've ever watched. just non-stop senseless war action. I can FEEL that every character was euphoric about fighting the war especially characters who just got the chance to use their brand new Venus Globe mechs with their overpowered beam tech that's far more powerful than anything from UC anime (not counting Newtype ghost magic). It's crazy that they even recreated Moonlight Butterfly in G-Lucifer and G-Self. I dropped the anime series when it was airing just after they visited Towasanga because everything was just so confusing, but now after watching the Movie... it was still confusing until Movie 5 at least where the conflict and factions allegiance got simplified. Overall I really like G-Reco. Great animation, great combat with interesting beam tech, a bunch of likeable characters full of personality, a lot of casual humorous scenes here and there like this for example >>23570342 (a lost art in modern storytelling). I like the happy go lucky epilogue. I have a bad feeling about it though, now that everyone's buddy buddy with each other, Towasanga/Venus Globe are eventually gonna mass migrate to Earth, right? along with their advanced war technology and other problems. War would happen sooner or later. For the mecha design. I really like G-Self design. Normal, Assault and Perfect Pack, all great. bad Bandai hates 1/100, so MG G-Self never ever. I like Mack Knife and G-Lucifer too (sasuga Ippei Gyoubu) , but the other mech design are kinda meh and forgettable.
>>23570542Another thing that I dislike: Barara didn't get a closure, even though we saw her use escape pod to survive the Pyramid explosion. Barara is the character I like the most. feisty petite cuckqueen.
>>23570542glad you enjoyed it anon
>>23570542Similar feelings to myself. I watched it over the last week during some long flights and enjoyed it. Not sure why people say it was bad, as it was better than IBO overall. Excited that Bandai is releasing a new G-self even if it's P-bandai as it should be easier to find and I want it now.
>>23570543Yeah it's weird they never chase up on if she died or not. Given the overall tone of the show it'd be weird if she did but that she never shows up again makes weird if she didn't.
>>23570543my uncle works at Bandai and he said that Tomino is making Barara's Counterattack.
>>23526923well, now that I've completed the anime, it's time to test my understanding.>Capital Army/GuardPhoton Battery mafia, just wants to protect the taboo and the status quo>AmeriaWant more Photon Battery for supremacy>MegafaunaAmeria's pirate fleet who acted independently by going to Towasanga and Venus Globe to find out about pretty much everything >TowasangaSpacenoid colony at the far side of the moon. plan to return to Earth eventually after the Earth has healed (Reconguista). >Rayhunton FamilyTowasanga's royal family. Reconguista through peaceful means. Killed by Dorette faction who wants to do Reconguista through invasion>Venus GlobeFactory for Photon Battery production. affiliated with Towasanga>G-IT Laboratorythe Anaheim of G-Reco. create tons of super advanced war technology that everyone used in the final war of the anime. affiliated with Towasanga.------While writing this, it came to mind that I'm actually still confused about the time horizon of Regild Century. I read that Tomino said G-Reco was 500 years after Turn A. does it mean Turn A was set in Regild Century 500? so Correct Century isn't actually a canon in-universe name, but a convenient name for us viewers? well, G-Reco being a distant sequel to Turn A makes everything about "xxx is taboo because UC wars are le bad!" make sense. Dark History from Turn A was probably made public and used as anti-war & anti-advance war tech propaganda by the Moonrace and whoever had the most influence on Earth after the end of Turn A. Just like how irl they keep reminding us of muh ww2, muh nazi and muh holocaust. Also it's weird that people at Towasanga and Venus Globe have mutated into manlets when the Moonrace in Turn A were normal-looking. Is it even possible for humanity to mutate (degrade) like that in just 500 years?
>>23570558>Not sure why people say it was badbecause it's confusing, especially when it takes 26 weeks to complete.
>>23570592Whenever I see what does get popular and doesn't I just die a little more inside every time
>>23570543m8 her escape pod gets swallowed up by an arc of fire as the Yggdrasil explodes. She's dead
>>23570342>>23570347YFW the MC is actually the Char.
>>23570608Why go to the effort of animating an escape pod. Also escape pods are typically made to be heat resistant. What with their primary focus being so explosion adjacent.
>>23570542Grimoire is great.
>>23570586>so Correct Century isn't actually a canon in-universe name, but a convenient name for us viewers?Correct Century is a term that the moon race uses. Loran states his date of birth in one of the earlier episodes to Harry or someone. And it's a play on words of the western calendar (they're phonetically the same). It may also be a play on words for the lunar new year too, since you know, moon people. Actually, I'm not sure Regild Century is an actual term used in the show.
>>23570633Bellri spelt out "Regild Century" in the anime yeah
>>23570637Then maybe it's a moon vs earth thing. I guess it makes sense for Earthnoids to think that the bad stuff, aka Universal Century, only ended recently since the Earth got turned into a wasteland. Meanwhile the Moonrace still had most of their tech in their archives
>>23544750i saw tons of brainlets complaining that they didn't know why bellri was working with the amerians, or what the difference between the capital army and capital guard are. basic shit explained unambiguously in dialogue.
>>23570586Tomino may have intended it to be after Turn A but that’s not the show we ended up getting. UC is explicitly a few thousand years prior. Don’t worry about it and just assume Turn A has no direct connection until this by timeline inevitably turns into it like all others
>>23570608It doesn't really matter since she never shows up again anyways but thats a shitty escape pod if its flammable
>>23566752Update on this. He actually gets a bit of something with the Rayhunton dilemma and accepting his heritage but it's all rather flaccid outside of his initial temper tantrum. Raraiya stopped being a retard earlier than I remember, that was a pleasant surprise. Dr. Flaminia's betrayal was actually hilariously executed. The addition of the G-IT Corps is welcomed, though. This is actually one of the best Gundam series ever. The structure of the plot obfuscates how simple the narrative is, which isn't inherently a flaw but I think it can get a bit monotonous and repetitive with its points and story beats at times (how characters express themselves in conflict and their exposition). None of the characters are individually interesting but I like the cast as a collective, which makes sense given the shared motives and themes, and Aida is a surprising stand out. Its frequent (physical) comedy hasn't done much for me outside a few moments, but I like its general aesthetic choices (bright color palette, character acting, line work emulation, so on) and relatively lighthearted tone. The character and mecha design are great, too. 6.5/10 maybe
Yeah, this was hilarious. I cut out part of it before.
