-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.
START - 8/12/25

Yeah, the ones for the hands and shoulders are a bit loose. They're holding but I dunno how long that'll be the case. Ankle and knee ones are 10/10 though, I got some crazy poses without a stand going on and even stupidly put every single effect part on at once. Not gonna keep it displayed like that because it wobbled whenever I moved near it.

Because your people are speaking a perverted form of English. Ancient English is different, British English is different. There is such thing as "based" or " kino" with their slang-y meaning in the English dictionary either.

>>
>>23519833

>>
>>23519844
First MG should be a suit you like a bunch. If you can't decide, ask with a shortlist. Even old MGs are good, but you might need to put in a bit of extra work to get up to modern expectations. But since you are new, you won't mind as much.
Just avoid a ver Ka if you can help it unless you want to learn to love water slides right away.

>>
>>23519849
yeah I'm kinda torn between the Gouf Custom and the Destiny. But I already own the HGs so it kinda feels like a waste to get the same suit twice (I don't have much spare money for the hobby). If there's a good MG of a less common suit from Zeta, I'm getting that, probably.
>>
I would take sperg anon's meltdown more seriously if he didn't admit that he is just a snapshitter and never paint a single kit in his life.
>>
>>23519844
What >>23519849 said. Back in the day my first MG was the Zaku 1 because it was relatively simple, cheap, and I liked it because it was the first combat ready MS. Sadly that kit has been out of print for a while so it's like 300% more expensive than what it was when I bought it
>>
>>23519866
I'm pretty sure the Gouf has a bit of an issue holding up it's shield/gun. Not sure if some joint tightening (paint/tape on the joint) fixes that as I don't have the kit.
I believe the Destiny is a good kit. We also haven't gotten any indications that they are going to be doing MG versions of the Seed Freedom versions of the main suits.
>>
>>23519866
You should aim for modern MG with improved hands. Vidar is a good starter kit for people who are new to MGs. Alot of panel lines, easy to snap together, fully color separated. I would recommend Narrative and Sinanju Stein Narrative ver Ka, too.
>>
>>23519844
>>23519866
The Gouf Custom shows it's age. I wouldn't really recommend it as your first MG. It's not that it's hard but it can barely hold up the shield and generally speaking, the tech has moved on a lot since it came out in 2001. If you don't have much money to spend then I would highly suggest getting a more modern kit.
>If there's a good MG of a less common suit from Zeta, I'm getting that, probably.
You're sorta out of luck there.
>>
>>23519877
Yeah I checked on Dalong.
Gouf Custom got an 87 and it was mentioned that even new the gattling arm was drooping.

You will never be a real modeler. You have no paint, you have no milliput, you have no nippers. You are a homosexual man twisted by reddit and discord into a crude mockery of modelers everywhere.
All the "validation" you get is imagined and false. Behind your back people mock you. Your parents are disgusted and ashamed of you, "snapshitters" laugh at your inability to defend your claims behind closed doors.
Modelers are utterly repulsed by you. Thousands of years of evolution have allowed modelers of all types to sniff out frauds with incredible efficiency. Even faggots whose posts "pass" look uncanny and unnatural to a modeler. Your unfamilarity with common mechanics is a dead giveaway. And even if you manage to get a "you" from a drunk /gpg/ poster, he'll turn tail and bolt the second he gets a whiff of your diseased, infected crab mentality.
You will never be happy. You wrench out a fake smile every single morning and tell yourself it's going to be okay, but deep inside you feel the depression creeping up like a weed, ready to crush you under the unbearable weight.
Eventually it'll be too much to bear - you'll buy a belt, loop it around your neck, and plunge into the cold abyss. Your parents will find you, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to live with the unbearble shame and disappointment. They'll bury you with a headstone marked with your favorite past time "fun police", and every passerby for the rest of eternity will know an autistic retard is buried there. Your body will decay and go back to the dust, and nothing will remain of your legacy because you never posted your work.
This is your fate. This is what you chose.

You still need to weld or glue parts together. You can use putty in combination with sanding to make the parts flush though. A jar of surfacer might be better for small blemishes than putty. Putty is great for when you fuck up a cut and gouge something though.

I've never had this happen, the snapfit is stronger than the putty, especially if you're only working a little bit into the seam of a already joined part.
>expensive one
I've got 1 tube for $5 that I've been using for years, I take my hobby knife, scrape a little from the rim onto the blade, then I just use the blade to work that into the blemish/seamline. Less than 1% of the tube per seam/bleamish this tube has lasted me years.
>use cement and sprue
That's what I find expensive, cement comes in a tiny bottle and costs as much as or even more than an entire tube of putty.
>You still need to weld or glue parts together.
Maybe if we're building something that's not snapfit I guess cement/glue has a role, but most gunpla is snapfit so I don't see the point for 95% of kits if all we're doing is filling seamlines or the occasional blemish/gouge.

I was just wondering why everyone recommends the cement/sprue method, seems far more expensive and far more of a pain in the ass. I guess if you're not painting melting sprue parts of the same color in cement and using that will make it look cleaner, but if you are painting I don't see why I shouldn't just keep using putty for everything. I guess it just comes down to using what you're comfortable with, in the end the results are basically the same.
>>
>>23520932

same, that's my go to for sink marks or the odd seam that didn't quite fully close up just from cement+push. i don't bother waiting for it to fully dry though, i find it's usually sandable after an hour or two (depending on ambient humidity and temperature) unless you absolutely slop it on in big globs

That's entirely possible But any solvent has a shelf-life, right? I haven't bought a new jar of 500 in maybe 8 years. I live in a temperate continental climate, I can't imagine ambient temp/humidity has had that much of an effect.
>>
>>23521068
yes
>>23521075
it's still "soft" after 2 hours but it sands just fine for me. i do keep my room dry though and usually have at least a fan on, higher ambient humidity and low air flow will make it dry slower. thick globs definitely need a lot longer but i usually don't usually need to use that much
>>
>>23521081
>>23521083
the solvent will evaporate off if you keep opening the jar or leave the lid off, i squirt a bit of hardware store lacquer thinner into mine when it starts to get thick to replenish it
>>
>>23521075
You don't have to sand it most of the time, just give it like 20 minutes to set then come back in with a cotton swab with 90% alcohol to wipe away the overspill.
>>
>>23521086
And that works for you? I have a bottle of Mr. Hobby replenishing agent for my jars of paint that sit for ages. I put a pipette of that in my 500 once in a while and I feel like it keeps it in generally good condition.

Current meat gundam status
Cleaned up the paint some more
Added vein and backpack
Considering what to do with the backpack since there are beam saber holders but this guy is NOT gonna be using beam sabers
Either gonna tumor up the backpack a lot and just cover them up or use them as bases for tentacles somehow, maybe a tentacle holding a beam saber?

also considering doing something that would give the impression the organism is trying to make itself look less horrifying to humans, like a bone halo behind the head or something

In 2017 or 18 while visiting the Philippines I happened across a gundam convention at mall of asia. It was incredible, with a lifesize mobile suit in the center. The best part was a model building contest where they made their suits from scratch using scrap metal and whatever else they had. I couldn't believe the creativity. I'm watching the original series now and it reminded me of that so I came here. Seems like a really cool hobby

Is there a cheap and readily available HG that has good articulation that can be used as a basis to kitbash and improve older kits? I'm thinking something like a GM thats not very bulky and could be modified to be just about anything by just grafting on the armor of another MS. Something with double jointed knees and elbows that can get a near 180 degrees.

Maybe I should just get a bunch of Gundam MKII RGs for this purpose and reuse the frame from that.

do i need to get softener for water slide decals? or am i just good to put them on the piece and it'll seal in with the final top coat

my thought process is this:

snap all major parts, Gloss coat parts, Panel Line parts, clean any excess panel liner with lighter fluid/q-tips, apply dry decals/stickers, softener for water decals (if needed) then apply water slide decals, final varnish (matte)

I would really like the Arche Drei specifically. I suppose in theory I could just find and pay someone to build it for me but that seems shitty. It'd be more rewarding to do it myself amd learn. Maybe practice on other things before attempting it though.

Reusing the spare psychoplate armature from the bootleg varguil, I'll either put a missile pod or cannon on the end. Reason is I think having a vein spiraling up it to the flesh-overgrown weapon will look cool.

As big as Bandai is, I'm fairly sure that even they can't keep up the demand for engineering new designs for new models with how high their current standards are. I feel like people don't realize how massive the engineering improvements that's occurred within gunpla in the recent years and how much time and effort it takes to be as consistent. If it was older Bandai, they could probably shit out newer MG designs quicker but with a way tinier market than it is now.

Besides, current chink and bootleg kits would've stayed shit and wouldn't be as based as today if Bandai didn't set the current standards for snap shit model kits.
>>
>>23523095
Look into fabrication, soldering and stuff like that.
>>
>>23523276
They killed 1:100 model kits to focus on Metal Builds.
>>
>>23523104
Even the Japanese gunpla crowd are starting to get tired of fighting for reprints and having to deal with scalpers. The 2nd hand market in Japan is completely fucked due to the weak yen, some of the prices are outrageous. I've seen more and more Japanese accounts start to try Chinese kits and say that they're going to buy more since Bandai is failing to meet demand.
>>
>>23523280
i'll usually look for secondhand stuff if I have a buyee order open and I can get it for cheap enough that it's still some kind of discount after shipping. now kits go for more secondhand than if i were to go to a local hobby shop and buy it there.
>>
>>23523279
Well designed snapshit friendly model kits are more difficult to design than figures. Obviously, Metal Builds are easier to shit out.

Bootleg Sword done.

It's a really weird build. Parts sandwich together with a number of tiny pegs that are like 1mm wide. Everything snaps together well enough, no fitting issues, but you're not disassembling this without breaking a number of those pegs. Putting this together you get the sense that you're putting together a figure rather than a model, if that makes any sense.

But yeah, if you want a 1/100 Tyrant Sword, this is the best we'll ever get. Bandai will likely make a P-Bandai HG some time, but that's all it will be. A High Grade.

>>
>>23523197
probably the strangest decision yet on Bandai's part, truly an "out of touch boomer suits" idea, it's probably why there hasn't been a new "build fighters" show in ages, cause the metaverse flopped tremendously and ate a lot of money. I kinda miss seeing what older kits they retool with new parts for some OC's custom build, if they made more stuff like the HG EZ-SR, that would be great.
>>
>>23523539
I bought one of those cheap airbrush + compressor bundles on Amazon, it worked fine however I found myself unable to properly spray clear coats for some odd reason, even when I thinned it a lot, cleaned the brush multiple times, etc.. and it's only when I used my meme expensive airbrush I bought but didn't want to use yet until I "mastered" the cheap one, is when I noticed that the cheap airbrush was the issue as my $150 brush was spraying clear coats just fine. Maybe you might run into issues, but there's some airbrushes that are like 50~70 bucks? that should work just as good as the pricier ones and shouldn't have dumb issues like my cheap brush had.
>>
>>23523539
Just get a $100 tanked compressor with a water trap from the start. You will happily use it until it dies in like 5 years. Cheap airbrushes are the things that will annoy you and/or not work right.

I have no idea what I'm doing, I was trying to figure out how to apply the strange waterslide decals that came with the RG RX-78-2 2.0 I built, however, it appears these are actually stickers.
The correct thing to do is to buy waterslide decals right? The stickers look really really bad, theres a noticeable off-colored area around where you apply them, and some of them are pretty big. I can just buy one of the decal sets from e.g. G-Rework right? Is it worth getting a special softening / curing agent like mark softer / mark setter?
>>
>>23523696
Yeah, RG 'decals' are lame and gay stickers. You can get third party waterslides from wherever. I like mr mark setter and softener. Softener helps a lot on curved surfaces, but I don't think it's 100% mandatory if you are just applying decals to flat parts.
>>
>>23523696
>>23523703
I find setter is also only required if it's going to be a long time before you top coat the kit. Decals usually have enough glue on them from the sheet to stay in place for long enough to seal them in.
Softener is also useful if a decal spans 2 parts or a panel line. I think all RX-78 ones are on 1 flat piece each so it likely isn't needed.
That said, a bottle of each is like $12 total and will last 50 kits so why not get them.
>>
>>23523696

>>
>>23523703
>>23523710
Alright, that's what I'll do then, it's kind of unfortunate it doesn't just come with decals.
>>
>>23523696
Waterslides aren't as hard as you think unless you are putting them on very curved or ridged surfaces, and that's where the softening agent helps, but for flat panels you shouldn't need it. Just be sure to use distilled water or water with low amounts of minerals so you aren't leaving mineral rings on your model (you already know if this is a problem with your tap water or not).

Those are spots where super glue seeped out from a joint. It looked kinda like a rough weld when it dried so I just painted over it in black to make it look like a hastily done repair. there's also a similar spot on the face and upper thigh where I fucked up the paint and did the same thing. I think it gives it the feel of a well used war machine.
I wouldn't do this on most mobile suits but a zaku is made of steel so a weld or bad scrape would need painted over with something, even if they didn't have a matching paint for their ace pilots and their special color schemes. Up close I do think it looks like a hastily done weld and some of the paint bubbling up from it.

tl;dr passing off fuckups as intentional design.

I'm a retard and need advice on how to get the most out of this shit. Tried to panel line and topcoat for the first time on an EG RX78 but the latter just caused the former to go runny again and come off/go all over the place. I was probably way too heavy with the spray but the panel liner felt like it was easy getting into some places like the head and sucked on the arms/legs.
I'm guessing for next time I need to scribe detail lines so the paint can get in and stick deeper, then gloss coat, then panel line, then do very thin layers of topcoat to seal it all in and stop everything from running?
Using pic related btw. Is Tamiya's enamel stuff much better vs the risk of plastic cracking?

>>
>>23524495
I just bought the base kit for my build this weekend. I'm gonna put it together this week and start test fitting stuff to it and see what works.
>>
>>23524491
I look like this
>>
>>23524526
How long did you wait for the panel liner to dry? I don’t quite know its composition, but if it’s acrylic, you might need to wait a day for it to fully cure and not reactivate. Which doesn’t exclude the possibility of it clumping up once you add solvents on top, but such is the nature of acrylics.
With Tamiya, it won’t reactivate with the solvents used in PU matte varnishes, so it’s more stable. It also never cures, only dries, and it is dissolved by multiple different solvents, which means that it is easy to just clean it away if you fuck up without damaging a lacquer paint or gloss coat underneath.
>>
>>23524526
What top coat did you use? If it was water based, that's why the Stedi panel-liner ran. Stedi panel-liner is water based too. You don't want to be using the same base liquid for both coating and lining. One of the reasons people use Tamiya accent is because it's enamel based, and doesn't react with the typical water or laquer based top coats.
Also, you don't NEED to gloss coat before using Tamiya if you don't need to, as long as you're not painting. Just line the parts while they're in the runner. Tamiya only cracks parts because the thinner is more likely to pool on an already assembled kit, and the thinner will pool and/or seep into micro-fractures the plastic from snipping.
>>
>>23524548
I think you would be hard pressed to find a solvent that doesn’t dissolve water-based products. Good old thinner sure as hell destroys or dissolves any acrylic I’ve ever gotten my hands on, and so will IPA, but maybe that product is something more esoteric that I’m unaware of.

I used AK Ultra Interactive Matt Varnish, airbrushed it. Think it was about an hour or so I left the panel liner to dry as I had to set up airbrush / booth after finishing that up. I guess I need to curb the habit of thinking I can start and finish something in less than a day huh.
Are there any topcoats that would play nice with stedi stuff? I saw that they also do fluorescent liners that I'd really like to make use of in the future but wouldn't want to bungle their effect at the eleventh hour.

Preorder it on USAGS

Ok sorry I'm new to this

Then in that case, don't pre-order it off USAGS and use the official Kotobukiya USA store because they offer multiple first time order coupons. You'll get free shipping and like 10% off your first purchase. After that, don't use them because of tariff surcharges.

That top coat is water-soluble, so there you go. Water liner on water coat will run.

Once water based paints cure they are no longer water soluble.

As soon as you ask them for it, and see if you can get them to improve the elbow and knee articulation while they're at. The kit uses single rather than double joints.

that's the only good one

these are pretty flimsy. I wouldn't trust them with a kit that's on the bigger side like RG Sazabi

I never noticed it before watching Endless Waltz but the RG Tallgeese III might be the best looking 1/144 kit

I never used bi component putty before. I'm not going to sculpt anything, just going to fill some big holes. Is there anything I need to know beforehand ? I saw an anon say you should wet your hand when manipulating it because it's very sticky
>>
>>23525023
Yeah it's really annoying if you don't do something to keep it from sticking. Otherwise it's easy to use. Keep kneading it until it's all one color and then you're good to go.
>>
>>23525025
dip your fingers in water. all it takes. if you end up mixing a tiny bit of water into the putty as well it will become much less sticky, to where it can be a problem because the putty doesn't stick enough
>>
>>23525023
Depends on the specific putty. I do t bother with mine, personally. Play around with it and reach your conclusions
