>Be kid in the 2000's>Like many at the time watch the Toonami block and get into stuff like Dragonball, Tenchi, Outlaw Star and of course Mobile Suit Gundam Wing>Loved it as a kid but never watched it again because 49 episodes is a lot for a rewatch at a time when theres so much anime showing up in the west for the first time damn near every week, especially when even dial up plebs could watch scuffed real player downloads off fan sites>But as i grew up always heard it was a terrible series and a knock off>Watch the rest of the Gundam series over the years>Get reminded by the Anniversary and start rewatching Wing>Great suits, fantastic music, good story, unique suits like the Tallgeese are great and mean its not just the Gundam as unstoppable power fantasies>Enjoy it from start to finish. Now obviously stuff like Zechs is an attempt to redo Char and Heero is an unlikeable autist and basic bitch 90's edgelord but overall this is a pretty good show. Why were people so vehemently against this show in the 2000's? what am i missing?Tallgeese still the best none Gundam mobile suit design btw.
>>23526243>WingStellar grunt designYou can tell what the intended role for everything is>LeoGreen grunt>CancerCrab shaped therefore sub>AriesProbably the standout flight design of all time>TaurusStar shaped so space! Also heero is a lovable autist>So why is the show badIt can be overly melodramatic and the heavy amount of stock animation is crazyBasically you have to be in the mood for it
>>23526243Because it's people saying the most retarded shit imaginable and trying to treat it like it's somehow profound. >good storyYeah, nah. I'll grant it's got some spiffy designs but again, RE-TAR-DED
>>23526243>We all want peace and we know what we're doing is wrong, so we won't stop killing until someone stops us to show how wrong we are.Treize & Millardo in a nutshell.
>>23526243>Tallgeese still the best none Gundam mobile suit design btw.You mean the tackiest? That's why people like it.
>>23526462Is yTHIS TRUE!!? ANONSS!!
>>23526462UHH BASED???
It was popular therefore bad.
It's fairly easy to not connect with most of the Gundam pilots and the pacing has some serious issues, where there are multiple points where it feels things are ramping up only for momentum to get reset.
WTF now it's really just copy&pasting Char's Counterattack except without Newtypes.
>>23526877>>23526243It's literally a Leo with a helmet.
>>23528125BUT IT'S GOT A HELMET!
>>23526243>>23526877>>23528125>>23528129>Tallgeese still the best none Gundam mobile suit design btw.Tallgeese is a gundam, the wing gundams are literally gimped versions of it.
I just didn't give a fuck about any of the five main characters
>>23529001Tallgeese is a prototype MS, not a Gundam and Wing Zero are a gimped version of that.
>>23529515I mean Duo's kind of fun but every one else ranges in varying degrees of too retarded to exist.
>>23529641Duo also easily has the least going on with his character
Wing is KINO
>>23526243Gundam Wing is clunky and experimental, like a Leo jerry rigged with a mobile doll system. Short lived, easy to point out its flaws, but it challenged the established system enough that its concept remained memorable and its contribution was significant enough to leave its mark on the world. No psychic powers, no sentient machines, no supernatural stuff. Just confusing messy realistic conflict, flawed protagonists that make questionable decisions and some fairly realistic mech designs. At least where it comes to the mass produced mobile suits. The Tallgeese and Leo are among my favourite mechs of any series. Even if you arent into gunpla but like wing, I recommend the master grade Tallgeese. It is a perfect representation of the machine.Wing is not without its flaws. It reused animations egregiously. Some of the characters are autistic edgelords and I cant stand their existence. But it was my first mecha and will always be one of my favourites.
>>23529641He's the most agreeable but he just isn't very interesting.
>>23531111>No psychic powers, no sentient machines, no supernatural stuffThe Zero System and "The Soul of Outer Space" do the same thing functionally. And the boys being 90s as fuck super soldiers doesn't help either.
>>23526243It's unrepentant Fujobait instead of of Shota/Fagbait
>>23526243Because the show is bad if you didnt watch it as a 12 year old
>>23531144>The Soul of Outer Spacedid that ever matter in the show? the only thing I remember about that is quatre whining about it sometimes
>>23528118You've never heard of Zechs being described as a Char speedrun?
>>23532686Wing was weird for me. I watched some episodes as a kid, enough for me not to be super interested in restarting it as an adult, but also not enough for me to take part in discussions so I would usually scroll over them to avoid getting spoiler in case I wanted to watch it.
>>23532598I dont recall it ever being a significant part of the show. I only remember it being mentioned once or twice, but it seemed like it was a metaphor or something to explain humanity's fascination with exploration. It certainly isnt something that makes the mechs have sentience or give pilots the ability to hear each others thoughts or control mechs telepathically.
>>23526243you mean New Mobile Report Gundam Wing
>>23526462Im sorry but Wing is indeed overrated. The themes about war and peace are contradictory and reductive because it constantly flip flops between romanticizing war by pretending that it makes soldiers become noble and virtuous while trying to reconcile this with the concession that peace is necessary so it ends up saying that say that war is good because it teaches people the value of peace when it vindicates Treize the war monger as a hero that caused countless people to die because it was all part of his master plan for peace. Its a naive worldview that thinks humanity as a whole needs to be punished before they can have peace even though its not the general population that cause war, its a subset of geopolitical leaders and elites that put their interests above the lives of commoners whom they treat as insects.
When you watch the show weekly, it's a lot better than if you binge it. If you binge it, you start to notice that basically everyone backstabs everyone else and then then they take over in a coup. Then the Gundam pilots question their motives and attack them. Then another group takes over. Then there's a speech about the meaning of war and how it should be fought honorably. If you binge the show, you get that repeatedly.
No Quality Slow pacingInconsistent writingLack of Good MS battlesOne dimensional and unlikable characters no development (heero and trowa being flat and bland, releana and Dorothy being annoying ugly spoiled brats and Wufei being a sexist treacherous jerk)
Wing gave us the Tallgeese which is one of the best mobile suits across the entire Gundam franchise.
>>23526243My main problem with it is the suits lean too heavily into their themes, and it makes it hard to take the story seriously. Like, they're not even bad designs, they're cool gundams. But HA and Wing are the only two equipped with fucking ranged weapons? You're telling me that the colonies couldn't scrounge up three goddamn rifles? All of them feel like one-trick ponies, and I like that about them, but that doesn't make sense for a machine being deployed as a guerilla operative where it's going to need to be adaptable, and that fucks with my suspense of disbelief. Give each of them like one or two more weapons and the problem's fixed. If I had to nitpick I'd also say there weren't enough enemy ace customs and super prototypes, like people meme about leos getting blown up, but the real cause of the issue here was that there was nothing other than leos for them to fight a lot of the time, because Zechs can only be in one place at a time. It was sorely missing some more capable enemies to take on the gundams and pose a real threat to them.
