What is /m/ opinion on this movie and its sequel?
>>
>>23531696
It became a cult classic. The sequel is only loved by contrarians and ragebaiters.
>>
fun movie, could've been better but it's a very decent attempt
the only person I know that prefers the sequel is duel and that should tell you everything
>>
There is no sequel to Pacific Rim.
>>
/m/ (correctly) loved it at the time. I rewatched it recently and all the parts that were great remain great and I had a good time. The sequel movie is of no interest to me. The series supposedly might be alright and I'll get around to watching it eventually, maybe.
>>
>>23531726
Rim the Black is an okay watch, nothing great but it has its moments. Definitely better world building and continuation of the franchise than 2.
>>
>>23531726
>>23531739
I wasn't aware there was an anime version. I think I'll have to watch it now.
>>
>>23531776
Same guys who did the Tron cartoon, apparently (which is surprisingly decent).
>>
>>23531776
>anime
It's a netflix CG cartoon, but it's not bad.
>>
>>23531696
It was, and still is, the only time Hollywood ever got giant robots right (but I haven't seen Robot Jox yet so that might be decent too). Didn't watch the sequel and never will.
>>
>>23531789
The sequel was pretty good in my opinion. Maybe even better than the first one.
>>
>>23531696
Wish it got a decent roguelike monster beam em up where you could customize your Jaeger with upgrades, emergency repairs, and drift compatibility dialogue trees/minigames
>>
>>23531696
No Rinko no care.
>>
>>23531789
>I haven't seen Robot Jox yet so that might be decent too
it's good stuff
most of the budget is reserved for the robot fights but it works

I liked Pac Rim 1, not my fav giant robot, kaiju, or GdT movie but very solid
caught it a bunch at the dollar theater because it would be just nuts if like, the latest gundams and godzillas from Japan were in theaters everywhere so you gotta get your robots where you can
never bothered with the rest
>>
>>23533300
Yeah the game it did get was just a shittt 3d fighter. Real Steel got a sickass game though for some reason by the same devs, where you can build your own robot and go through career with it.
>>
>>23531696
As much as I like the movie and Del Toro's vision. I wish some of the more outlandish kaiju ideas from the early script made it in. It had some great ideas like a dragonfly/wasp thing that started the fight as an armored caterpillar then molts after absorbing the Jaegers energy weapons, the one that was like a hybrid squid/sea urchin that flung suicide bomber mini clones of itself off as weapons, a multi headed snake thing, one whos described as a giant human skeleton wrapped in sickly pale yellow flesh
>>
>>23533616
>giant human skeleton wrapped in sickly pale yellow flesh
sounds sorta like Crystal Bowie
>>
>>23533535
that real steel mobile game bricked my phone
>>
>>23533620
I played it a lot on an iPad. Kinda pay to win. The console game is what I was talking about though.
>>
I liked that comic of the initial kaiju attack.
>>
>>23531696
Went in expecting a shitty Godannar ripoff but it was surprisingly great
That sequel though...they should've taken the hint when the main dude said his time would be better spent making that King Arthur travesty
>>
>>23533300
>roguelike
To the trash, it goes.
>>
I REALLY wish we got a prequel. Those first few kaiju incursions wouldve made good entertainment. Up to Yukon Echo beating the shit out of Karloff and the age of te Jaegers beginning
>>
>>23531696
1st movie is easily one of my all time fav movies. It feels just so right, seeing the robots' movements and how the camera lingers on them was like, yeap, the people who made this GETS mecha anime. It's the best anime mecha live action that isn't based off an actual existing work.

2nd movie was dogshit and I hate it with every fiber of my being because it threw away all that made the 1st one enjoyable.
>>
>>23534484
There's a prequel tv series being worked on, it's by Legendary but Amazon's involved.

Maybe it'll be a funny trainwreck like the 40k series they're making is.
>>
>>23534505

Exactly this.

Plus, in the first movie they made the robots feel and sound real. The whole package together just worked so well.

In the sequel they were basically just generic CGI mechs. Sound design was not there and everything looked too anime... But trying to exist in real life, so they looked like toys.
>>
>>23534512
m-maybe Itll turn out like Twsited metal and keep the spirit of the source material despite the limitations of streaming?
>>
Completely bungled a slam dunk trilogy. At this point they should consider just making a new second movie. Just release another pacific rim 2 lol
>>
I honestly cannot remember uprising's Jagers, except for Athena because if was the token lady bot
>>
>>23534518
Twisted Metal was shit, videogame faggots will eat up anything won't they.
>>
>>23534522
I remember November Ajax. He looks like a mass-produced cop robot and I like the taser knuckles.
>>
>>23531696
worst parts are the scientists, by far.
Rest of its a fun dumb movie.
>>
>>23534512
chill Bruh. The original pilots were girlbosses.

I recommend anyone who hasn't done so yet to watch the Japanese dub, it's amazing.
>>
>>23534535
I haven't seen this in so long that I forget out them. The comic relief dork.
>>
>>23534596
I was watching this on a flight, and changed the language to Japanese. Hearing Raleigh and the AI yell "ROCKET PUNCH" instead of "Elbow Rocket" was nice.
>>
>>23534596
I like the part where the older Australian dude comments 'one does not care to acknowledge the mistakes of one's youth' when his son was starting shit with the MC.

First one understood the assignment and was a fun and thrilling movie about giant robots punching giant monsters in the face.

Second one added unneeded drama, poor characterization, plot elements that made it shoot itself in the foot, and was in the era of blatant china-pandering (which apparently didn't work because IIRC china hated the character they tried to push)

probably the most damning thing was that the sequel didn't let itself be awesome. PR1 knew that the premise was out there, but it followed the themes sincerely and played them straight so the audience goes along with the ride. The sequel didn't do that- they had to keep shoe-horning in jokes in every "exciting moment" and ended up breaking the immersion, examples being Gypsy Avenger doing the hand-in-palm pose and then falling over, or the Jaegers rocketing in to the final battle to the fucking Trololo song. The scriptwriters read the words "stupidly-awesome" and laser-focused on the "stupid."

Also the blatant sequel hook in the sequel- PR1 at least could be taken as a standalone movie, while PR2 banked on a sequel but now leaves that hook dangling.
>>
>>23534518
Twisted Metal was fuckin great
>>
>>23536865
I know, right? it wasnt as good technically as I wanted it to be (not having accurate Hammerhead and Minion comes to mind) but the heart was there.
>>
>>23536251
>>23536605
Holy shit that dub sounds fun, I'll remember that next time I watch Pacific Rim.
>>23536738
>mfw the Russian kid plays the actual literal goddamn Trollolol song to calm himself dowm before the final fight
I've seen some stupid shit in my time but that's gotta be top 10. Also the Indian kid dying like a chump for cheap drama was funny to me because he's also in the Disney Channel show Jesse.
>which apparently didn't work because IIRC china hated the character they tried to push
I don't know how Hollywood seemed to misunderstand why China liked big stupid American action movies so poorly.
>>
>>23536938
The australian dad doesn't actually say that, sorry to disappoint you. It's just the strayan dad is voiced by Ikeda Shuuichi
But yeah, JP dub is great because they got a bunch of big name VAs who are known for certain mecha related roles. Like Megumi Hayashibara for the main girl and Furuya Tohru for Charlie.

Brilliant movie, 11/10, absolute perfection.
Everything else from the IP has been garbage. Yes, even your shitty netflix anime about teenagers that barely had anything to do with giant fucking robots.
>>
>>23534522
I remember liking Obsidian Fury at the time, I don't quite remember why
>>
>>23531696
For me, its Gypsy showing up at Hong Kong.
>Herc and Chuck decide to do "something stupid" to distract Leatherback from rampaging through the city
>Leatherback is mad and attempts to attack Striker Eureka, only for floodlights to show up, revealing Gypsy carried by choppers
>"YEAH GYSPY KICK ITS ARSE"
>>
>rocket slowly accelerates the the hand into the leatherback 's face
>Noticeable meaty delay between impact and the monster being btfo
Everything was heavybut chunky so you have time to take it in
Somehow this is undesirable going into "the sequel"
>>
>>23534507
Its gonna be Monarch Legacy of Daddy issues:Pacific Rim edition
>>
>>23537707
>I don't quite remember why
Ocean madness?
>>
>>23531696
The tandem mocap controls has to be the dumbest thing ever.
>>
>>23537850
>Monarch
I still don't get why they had to add in the 'dad was cheating on his family' bit. Guy's supposedly obsessed with work and putting his all into his secret organization monster tracking stuff and somehow still had the time to start 2 different families. You could make the siblings come from the mother and you'll still have the same
>estranged kids story
>sibling not getting along with each other story
>kids discover dad was working for a top secret organization involved with tracking monsters story

How the fuck do those guys manage to fumble such a simple premise.
Man, Kurt Russell carried that show hard.

WHERE IS MY GOD DAMN SHOE
>>
I got curious, so I started looking up what else legendary television has made. Turns out they made that shitty animated Lara Croft and Dune Prophecy. This prequel show being shit is now an inevitability for me.

>>23537887
It's not mocap, they're connected to the jaegers directly. It's not like they can make the jaeger move without moving their own body.
>>
>>23531696
This movie got me into the idea of mecha when I was 13, so you tell me. Sequel got me into considering TND.

What pisses me off about Netflix series is that they went grimdark fornthebsake of looking mature. I mean Pacific Rim is technically post apocalypse but the first movie was never this grimdark.
>>
>>23540356
1 was pretty damn grimdark, mechas had been getting wrecked fighting the stronger kaijuu and were cut down to a last couple of mostly outdated units and the world governments instead decided to pool all of humanities resources into building a great wall hopium that was shown to be utterly useless making extinction an inevitability.

It's the writers thinly veiled fetish anon, why do you think a hetero guy getting lescucked was included?
>>
The sequel is a backdoor live action Gundam movie.
>>
>>23541539

>>
>>23541640
>he thinks it's gonna come ouy
>>
>>23538105
I was actually intrigued by the "Dad had two families" premise at first, but the show quickly does absolutely nothing with it, and it drove me fucking insane how inconsistent this made the sibling characters.
>Episode 1
>Sister: "Our dad sucked." Brother: "Hey, he had good points, too."
>Episode 2
>Brother: "Our dad sucked." Sister: "Hey, he had good points, too."
>Episode 3
>Sister: "Our dad sucked." Brother: "Hey, he had good points, too."
>Episode 4
>Brother: "Our dad sucked." Sister: "Hey, he had good points, too."
THIS WENT ON FOR THE ENTIRE FUCKING SHOW
>>
>>23538105
>Man, Kurt Russell carried that show hard.
It's a shame we got Kurt Russell in a Godzilla project and it was that bullshit. He deserved to be in a better show or movie. I did love his one line about Serizawa, though.
>"'Let them fight.' Jesus. Tell me, exactly what was his plan if Godzilla had lost?"
