What defines a ground type unit?

Is it how light it is so it doesn't get bogged down by gravity too much, or how it's more maneuverable overall? Is it the equipment that it brings? What about ground melee units like Efreet or Blue Destiny, it looks heavy, are the joints just slicker with the limbs able to move faster?

BUY MORE PLASTIC!

Not built with a space or aquatic life support system, less boosters/thrusters, systems more focused on balance rather than spinning in 12 directions, ect.

it fight in ground

Painted cream instead of white.

It lacks equipment to maneuver in space. No thrusters that will help it move in zero g. Sometimes it has specialized equipment to help it operate underwater too.
>>
Its simple, can it fly or does it have sustained flight? If no, then its a ground type. Most mobile suits are ground types its just not out right specified because it would be redundant. It would be same as calling your Honda Civic a car vehicle.
>>
Okay, here's an idea: Ground Type Zeong.

How about an UNDERground Zakrello with drills instead of scythes
>>
>>23539108
none of the OYW MS have any flight ability except for a small handful of prototypes and they still made ground-use models of them like zaku to zaku ground type and gundam to gundam ground type

A ground type doesn't have the necessary thrusters and adjustments to work effectively in space. I think it was in Igloo they show how a ground type zaku has trouble in space. Its a cost savings thing though a ground type may be built to take the harsher punishment of working under earth gravity and handle heavier weapons like we see in 08th MS.

So before the J-type was developed, could Zaku II F-types operate on Earth? If I recall Char's S-type goes from space to ground without any refitting
>>
>>23539673
F-types worked in colonies, they had no trouble working on Earth as well. S-type is mainly just a better performing F-type so same goes for Char's Zaku. The initial invasion of Earth was carried out with F-types.

The main purpose of the J-type was a small bit of cost, weight, and time savings, since the war on Earth was going to take a while and they went as far as to create Zaku production lines on Earth. There wasn't much point in building Zaku II with space thrusters and space equipment that won't be needed for ground combat when the units are going to be used only on Earth for the foreseeable future.
>>
>>23539673
Yeah, they were multi-purpose. The ground type was optimized for earth (they cheaped out)
>>
>>23539673
Usually space MS can work on ground. The only exceptions are weirdly shaped ones that don't have proper legs, or machines like mobile armors, but even then some of them will have hovering systems that let them move around anyway. E.g., Apsalus was supposed to be able to descend from space to earth, it has tripod-like "legs" but it doesn't walk with them, it just floats everywhere
>>
>>23539673
The basic MS functions would work fine, but their space thrusters would just be dead weight. Adapting for earth they'd be stripped out to lighten the load and rely on ambulation or replaced with stronger thermonuclear thrusters for earth manoeuvring.
>>
>>23538668
A ground type is designed to work in atmosphere, on the basic level its gonna have to deal with weight being a much bigger issue and zipping around in three dimensions a much smaller issue. There's also other internal things to consider like cooling being less of a problem when you know the suit will be in atmosphere for all of its operational time and terrain/contamination being a much larger consideration.

Zeon would have won the war if the Big Zam Ground Type reached mass production
>>
>>23540187
I can only assume this gave it even bigger legs.

I heard there's a various of Zeta Plus have spec that are specific for Earth use and specific for Space use. What's the difference?
>>
>>23540344
Some guy in the EFF procurement who jacked off to the Zeta collaborated with some AE exec who jacked off to the Zeta and they tried to make as many Zeta variants as possible, so they removed a bunch of systems to make 'specialized' (cheapass) variants that were hopefully less of a maint nightmare than the Zeta

Zeta Plus A1 has a slightly more aerodynamic shield but lost the ability to re-enter the atmosphere most Zeta types have. C1 has the big fuckoff cannon in its shield, more booters on the tail, some external propellant tanks mounted under the wings so it can do extended operations in space along with retaining the ability to re-enter.

>terrain/contamination
is this really a thing?
>>
>>23542677
Dirt gets in the gears.
>>
>>23542677
I remember skimming more than a few MSV unit descriptions that talked about dustproofing and the like, never underestimate what dirt and other terrain will do to your mecha's joints. Explains Desert-type units as well, definitely need tight seals for those.
>>
>>23542677
logistics is usually boring and gay so to make it palatable to the audience it's only ever a background thing or potential accident that causes people to lose fingers and limbs
