-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Got this Blue Destiny kit that's metallic gloss injection I stumbled across. Honestly the plastic is dogshit. It's extremely hard and brittle like it's entirely made of clear old plastic. I'd probably prefer the plain old one and just hit it with some gloss and clear red swirled to give the effect.

Thinking about drilling out the ports on the abs to turn into giant headlights because that sounds cool. Fill with clear resin and put LEDs behind it.
>>
>>23543265
Sometimes they're better than either one, sometimes they are terrible. Just like Bandai. Some kits are good, some are dogshit garbage

At the end of the day it depends on your skill mostly

Koto mech kits are generally around 15 to 20cm tall and has alot of plastic inside, so i would say they lean to MG more, but has no innerframe since most of their kits are liscenced mechs with no canon innerframe to speak of. Frame Arms have innerframe, but they are a thing of the past at this point. They are defininitely more generous when it comes to expressive hands and trigger finger compare to Bandai. For the price tag, not so much.

use whatever the hardware store still sells. it takes a bit of getting used to when you're used to levelling thinner because it dries much faster but you can still easily get a gloss finish with hardware store or automotive lacquer thinners with the right technique. i'd find it hard to believe that all lacquer thinners will be banned even if the hobby stuff is
>>
>>23543324

Always worth trying things on a plastic spoon or runner. You can try to minimize the amount of setter by having the setter brush cap set out, picking up the decal and swiping it directly onto the brush. This method is good for having a quick dry time since there’s hardly any excess setter underneath, but adjusting is difficult once laid flat

As for the softener and having to brush it on top, good luck

Welcome to the licensing tax. There's always an upcharge on kits of properties that Bandai/sunrise don't outright own.
>>
>>23543739
I assume it's like the YF-29. In that case it's a good sized kit and there is ~1/3rd extra plastic of the kit for mode-specific parts. Also Bandai probably charges extra because they had to print a ton of stickers (that they won't also put on the sold separately water slides).
>>
Has anyone built a 1/550 Dendrobium? Im just a snapbuilder but this is the first HG I bought so I had no idea you had to paint it to get decent color accuracy.

Activated carbon does absorb VOCs, but you need a lot if you're going to do a lot of painting. Like those 5-10lb drum filters, or even more. It's used in industrial settings to filter VOCs but they're also using industrial-mass filters. They're literally worth their weight (and surface area).

I'm a usually contrarian in terms of finding a lot of designs cool even if they're greebled up chinkgod abominations to 99% and this is probably the rare design I actually find damn ugly. If this thing was like 300 meters tall and was a combiner robot from a super robot show, I probably wouldn't hate it too much but this thing is probably 20 meters tall and looks like some guy's mediocre kitbash with a lot of elements that clash.

I think my only real complaints come from the old MG hands, something that's already been solved, and the head, backpack, and inner-frame seams. I also had to tighten some joints as I snapped it around 2 years ago. It's all stuff that's fixable so I don't think it's a big deal but a ver. ka that is more in line with the anime/lineart's chunky proportions would be an instant buy. One of my long term project goals is to get good at custom building/detailing to eventually make the old MG rick dias look good next to this, the zeta ver. ka, and the shiki 2.0.

And I can do, and currently do, that with modern kits. 99% of people aren't customizing kits, so I don't understand why anyone would be surprised that the average person doesn't want to build kits that are over 25 years old.

>>
>>23545409
If anything its the other way around as better results are delivered with good foreplay. If the end result is all that matters to you then you end up either a 1 pump chump or just doing it yourself.
>>
>>23545423
It's a type-B fun for me. The actual process of building and modifying a kit isn't that fun for me, even if I appreciate the mechanics, but the result is what it enjoy the most. So why not buy a figure then? Well, something about having built it myself makes me enjoy the end product more. Also model kits are far more available and substantially cheaper than figures.
>>
>>23545439
This is not gunpla.
>>
>>23545442
for me it's the opposite: after i'm done with a kit and it's on the shelf i rarely look at it, which is why i don't understand the appeal of a figure. for me the entire point of a model is building and painting it, when that's done i don't care about it any more
>>
>>23545148
I am, but bandai kits are less than half of my completed painted stuff. I've considered buying kits older than 2000 before but they never really have proportions that suit my tastes. After painting one of those old star trek kits, with the mold coming from the 60s or 70s, I really cannot call a single nip mecha kit "bad". Also most mecha kits released after 2000, of really any manufacturer, will probably be pretty good. If you actually put effort into the hobby, kit quality only really matters to a certain extent. Maybe new experimental tech stuff, like those RG frames, could be justifiable for calling one bad but I've never built one so I never looked into whether the joint strength problems are actually fixable or not.
>>
>>23545442
Same, the process is something I enjoy only when it's done, I look at the kit and think i did this and that

If you live in some european country you'll constantly find plastic bottles only advertising themselves as being made of 20%, 50%, 70% recycled plastic or whatever because going all the way is apparently too expensive.
>>
>>23545824
I handpainted 6 kits and know exactly how to do it well but still can't do it well
>>
>>23545832
>going all the way is apparently too expensive
It's because there is no such thing as infinite recyclability with plastic. Maybe with glass.

As someone just getting into painting, what do you do for your color schemes? Does following the color guide and painting in the missing color separation do enough to make it look substantially better than unpainted or is the point to change the color scheme to something else entirely?
>>
>>23545886
Paint can look better but it's not substantially better than clearcoat unless you have bad stress marks. The real advantage of painting is that you can preshade and contour. If you're just blasting it with identical flat colors then you arent accomplishing much.
>>
>>23545839
what's your plan bro
>>
>>23545888
>Paint can look better but it's not substantially better than clearcoat unless you have bad stress marks.
This is so unbelieveably wrong. A well painted kit, even in the same colours as the plastic, will look substantally better than a kit with a topcoat over the plastic. The difference is night and day. The only people saying what you're saying are people who haven't actually done it themselves.
>>
>>23545888
You're wrong, a simple basic recolor is drastically different snd looks much better than a longsnap (topcoat and panel lines)

>>23545893
>>23545892

>>
>>23545886
Honestly i just use my minds eye as Im building it to see how it will come together as a finished build. Never once used the color guide which is sacrilegious to some anons here. You should start with some basic color swaps to get the hang of it
>>
>>23545886
shade
even just 90s style pillow shading looks better than flat colours and it's a good starting point to learn about complementary shade colours and get the hang of techniques
>>
>>23545886
>As someone just getting into painting, what do you do for your color schemes? Does following the color guide and painting in the missing color separation do enough to make it look substantially better than unpainted or is the point to change the color scheme to something else entirely?
Do whatever you think looks cool.
Sometimes that'll be stock colors, sometimes something else.
>>
>>23545895
If you're painting a kit in the same flat colours, it will still look miles better than a kit out of the box. Only way it wouldn't is if you fuck it up. There's literally thousands of videos out there of people painting kits in the same colours to prove how much better it looks.
>If you're just blasting it with identical flat colors then you arent accomplishing much.
Retarded.
>>
>>23545907
Just clearcoat it if you're not going to bother doing anything more than blasting it with a big fat coat of the color it already is. It's not hard to spritz some black primer on the low points to make the paint look good.
>>
>>23545888
I'm a lazy piece of shit that doesn't paint often and no yeah top coated paint looks different from top coated plastic
Top coated plastic CAN look really good, especially if the plastic texture is nice to begin with (the gcuck kits) but it's not the same as paint.
>>
>>23545912
The paint won't be so much better that it's worth bothering if you're not going to put in some effort. There's no reason to just paint it the same color it already was if you aren't going to shade or contour anything.
>>
>>23545589

>>
>>23545908
yeah no shit a "big fat coat of the color is already is" will look like shit.
while I do agree that if you're going to bother painting you may as well do something more than basic flat coats, a basic flat coat the same color will still look better than bare plastic. especially darker colors on large parts that are prone to have uneven pigment or thin light colored parts that can look translucent

just pick some colors and visualize it. try different stuff and see what you like. you can do whatever you want but my personal preference is to keep it as the thing from the anime/movie/visual novel/etc. while also allowing some leeway for color variation, line scribing, and custom details.

Please do not listen to the retards in this thread. If you like the original colours, and you do it right, a painted kit will look way better than an out of the box build. Aliexpress. It's sometimes listed under the name 'Fat Tiger' instead, as that's a more literal translation of the characters for Fat Cat, and those listings are cheaper I found. I also chose a listing that doesn't have the box, so cheaper in general.
Then, always check the store page for coupons to collect that apply automatically. It won't be much, like a dollar or even under, but it's something.
Finally, always check the following google doc for valid Aliexpress coupons. Some autistic redditor maintains it, and it's pretty extensive. You can get a shitton taken off with the right coupon.

I got to question how effective is to punch an enemy with explosives at point blank range but whatever, it is another feature you get

No, they had to bleach the original colors and restore them into pellets again. The pigments Bandai use for their models are varied from kit to kit, not to mention metallic injection and plating, they had to bleach all of those away.

>brand new system they announced with the F00 kit
It is not brand new, they have been doing it for years. The difference between ecopla and chemical recycle plastic is that ecopla goes through biodegradation and have shorter lifespan due to the lack of chemical recycling. They still had to bleach the pellets, which have dark grey color. This can cause difficulties to give the kit bright colors and clear parts, but it is not entirely impossible to do so.

Chang's bootlegs are a better proof of plastic recycling than any of bandai's token bullshit efforts.

it'll be pretty good. their metal gear kits are great and the muv-luv ones have tons of loadout options, as well as gimmicks that are only ever mentioned off-hand in the VNs. I like koto kits and they have lot of detail with the tradeoff being that they require a little more work than a gundam to get looking good.

It really depends on how you want God Hypermode to look like. If you just want to blast the paint on white primer then it would look very matte because that's what gold paint end up without pre shading. There is no accurate gold shade of this thing anyway so just make what ever you like best.

Just use gloss gray for the base then use gloss black on the parts you wanna shade. If the effect is too subtle you can spray a little clear gray or even black on top for post shading

Painted the face, it had a sticker but the red eyes are flat, and the black is glossy. I think I prefer the eyes be silver but reflect the red light that lights up the visor. Still not entirely sure how I'll attach it but I'm test fitting now. Maybe I'll put it above like the visor is display case. I want the eyes to light up but not be mega bright like the chest lights.

over an hour just for the body.
The parts that made up the body and the way they're assembled are very unique and interesting, but joint parts are soooo tight I can FEEL that they'd snap easily, so I sanded them extra hard to thin them out.
Also, these plastic get awful stress marks really easily.

>>
>>23546775
Gonna be real with you. I don't really have any solid reason. I was looking at them and because I didn't know anything about BD other than haunted gundam, my brain was straining on what to do with it without sacrificing the weirdness of the kit's plastic (Gundam Base Exclusive with dogshit hard brittle plastic since it has a slightly red tinted over the blue). So I decided to just LED it and paint details, weather it. When I was looking for details to pick out I also referenced the wiki which said it was wire guided missiles. Tbh that just doesn't feel inspired to me, and reminds me of how many weapons like head vulcans are jobber weapons they use before they die. So I was like, what if they were like giant ass fog lights. The idea of doing that kind of drew me into it a bit, which I embraced since I've had a hard time making myself build/be inspired recently.

I was making a night light for my Gundam fan kiddo that would connect via Wled on esp32 to my network and automatically turn on at night. The plan was first the red eye turns on slowly, then a few minutes later the chest lights come on. She would have been psyched. Fuck.

>chips off so easily, I can remove all layers just by scratching at the color a little
Do I apply more paint coats, sand the surface before applying primer or do I have to apply a topcoat?
I didnt wait 12 hours for the primer to cure like on the bottle because that referred to masking the primed surface, but is that actually the problem here?

It is quite fragile
More coats won't fix it, sanding before primer helps a bit but topcoat and waiting for it to cure will seal it best
Again it will still be a bit fragile but should weather accidents, but not deliberate scratching

I don't want transformations. They're a stupid gimmick that undermines the concept of giant robots fighting because they raise the question "if the actual best tactic is to just use a giant robot that turns into a plane then why aren't you just making giant planes?"
>>
>>23546618
>I don't think I've encountered an off-color bootleg outside of the really trashy ones like WM
When they're off they're usually very close but not 100% accurate. Like, barely half a shade off. The bootleg GTO GM is a good example, the tealish blue of the bootleg is barely too dark, to the point where you can't even tell in pictures, but I had 6 of the bootleg and 2 of the official ones and I could easily pick out the 2 official ones at a single glance.

But if you're going to be that autistic about color accuracy then you should be painting them the right colors anyway.

Bandai's engineering standards have improved so much since 2010, let alone 2000, that its hard to find fault in this. If I were just getting into Gunpla I wouldn't start with any kit before 2010, hell I'd put the cut off around 2013. That was around the time Bandai really started getting their shit together. I dont see it as a badge of honor that my first kit (Ez-8) was from 2000, I love when Bandai goes back to update older kits with new versions that improve the engineering and build experience.
