I've been seeing a lot of discourse on a few different sites now over the topic of Zyuranger again regarding things related to its adaptation, namely related to the statement "Zyuranger was considered a pretty unimpressive and average Sentai season in Japan." I'm not going to be talking about the adaptation much at all but I would like to clarify the water to the newer English-only fans who have fallen for this 20-some year old piece of misinformation in a quick little write-up. I choose here because information from here disseminates faster and Twitter sucks to post on.

The notion that Zyuranger was an "unimpressive and average Sentai season" in Japan is a misunderstanding caused by a reactionary movement related to its American adaptation and the adaptation's property owners being overly reliant on it - this has been a myth perpetuated in the toku anglosphere for over 20 years now. While Zyuranger wasn't considered the #1 (Most Sentai fans who grew up watching from mid-80s to mid-90s are more likely to mention Jetman or Gingaman) it was actually quite popular, boasting comparable ratings to its peers leading to a noticeable decline until Gingaman, but its peaks were higher than Jetman's! Additionally, it had notably strong toy sales due to Tsuyoshi Nonaka's design work and reiterating successful designs (like iterating on Jetman's best-selling Bird Blaster), namely with more uniquely "super robot" designs instead of the more blocky, stocky forms you'd see from typical Moriki or Murakami designs of prior years.

It's also one of the more frequently referenced due to its Dragon Quest inspirations and setting a lot of creative staples Shirakura made popular in Sentai like a proper 6th who lasted longer than one episode and more unique combination-styles. Frankly it was one of the bigger hits of the 90s Sentai runs, only truly beaten out by Jetman and Gingaman in that 10 year window in terms of success.

Acting wise, I have to rank
1) Kinjiro (he has natural charisma)
2) Ryugi (since he's the oldest so more experience)
3) Kumade & Hoeru (he vastly improved)

But character wise, in terms of how invested I am in their stories it's:
1) Sumino (lol)
2) Rikuo
3) Hoeru
4) Ryugi
5) Kumade
6) Kinji

Both Sumino and Rikuo ranked high is simply due to Rei. I wanted to rank Kumade higher because he has potential, but as of right now that's what he is, Potential-Man. I am disappointed that Kinji ended up being the most 'ignored' member of the team, unless they decide to have Rei be invovled with his family like we memed. Komura and Akiko both have focus problems, even on her Precure novel she wanks the main duo, even on her Butt Detective spin-off she wanks Suzu, it's why even before Gozyuger started there were two anons (me being one of them) who said that their main fear for the show was there being red wank and we were right.
The only mandate regardingthe reds that the writers can't escape is giving the upgrades to red, but most of the episodes focusing on Hoeru are most likely Akiko's fault, same with how with Komura it's her fault that the focus is so uneven in all three of her Sentai.

In Gozyuger's case, Murasame's equivalent would be GoodeBurn, not Hoeru who she writes everything around and whose whole personality was her idea. Kinjiro for example was the only ranger out of the core 5 who was the producer's idea and yet he's the one with the least focus episodes now that Ryugi went through his arc recently, so clearly Matsuura isn't mandating Akiko to focus on him despite being his idea, although he might be mandating Akiko to focus on Kuon who also was his idea and the only character whose actor didn't have to audition because of how much the producer loved the actor.

Your point falls apart because most Sentai don't have a focus problem as bad as Gozyuger or Komura's seasons besides Zyuranger and Maskman. The writers definitely are forced to focus more on red (white in Zenkaiger's case) because most upgrades and mecha go to him, but most Sentai still find the time to focus on the other members enough that usually only 2 of them feel sidelined by the end. The only defense I can give Komura when it comes to the red and extra hero is that Utsunomiya always request for both to be as extravagant/standout as possible, but even though Shinkenger, Gokaiger and ToQger wanked the reds a lot they still focused on the heroes pretty well, in the two Utsunomiya seasons written Kobayashi they focused on the villains really well on top of the team, and Gavv which was written by Komura sidelined the villains, even if they had gone with the original plan for Gavv they still would have died early because she didn't care to give focus on them.
So ultimately the focus problems mainly fall on Komura's and Akiko's writing skills, which I guess makes them more fit for Rider since they have smaller casts or at least for a Sentai that starts with a 3-member team, but we haven't had a show like that since Go-Busters for some reason.
