Its simple, Amuro was the "son" the Bright Noa actually valued/respected and Char was the man that Quess wanted. Hathaway couldn't hold a candle to ether. So he tried to hybridize their ideologies in order to become the kind of son that Bright Noa would respect/value and be the kind of man like Char Aznable so that Quess would love him. He failed miserable and got what he deserved for being a delusional fuck up.
Hathaway's only mistake was not pulling the trigger on Chan faster. That's it.
I guess I'm the only guy who likes Hathaway as a character huh...
