-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= BIOMECHA GROUPBUILD =-

Build a mecha/cyborg with a visibly biological component integrated into the machine. This can include:
>Mecha that naturally have some sort of organic component to them (Evangelions, Aura Battlers, etc)
>Mecha that have organic elements attached/fused to them, willingly or otherwise
>Cyborgs, androids, and human with mechanical attachments/enhancements (Robocop, Kamen Rider, mecha musume, etc)

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Pre-2018 when Bandai wanted to save money they would just used the inner frame runners of a similar or related MS.

Post-2018 they still do that but now lock it behind P-Bandai, charge $50 more and only print the kit once every four years.

hot water and a heavy book fixed most of it

just finished a XFS might strike freedom. i have a preference for seed shit so im really biased towards it. its definitively something close to a 8/10 to me. sadly the beam sabers were a definitive downgrade from the previous gunpla and the placement of the rifles is bad enough to ruin the whole kit for me

its definitively something weird to build. i dont think it can stand on its own and i dont know if its because the feet are badly designed or if its a bootleg issue. fortunately it had a tiny stand that does fits him so it looks like its permanently flying on my shelf now
the plastic felt weird, the gold feels like its a mix of brown and some other color, its brittle and worrying. theres 2 types of white, im not sure why, and for some odd reason i had a significant number of runners labelled A. the manual was really good, i think its a direct copy, my last bootleg had a tiny manual so this was a surprise to be seen, and this time, the manual has decal placement indications so its really the whole service
the visor plastic is UV reactive even tho they give you stickers, so i decided to paint what i could. i regret doing this for the rifles, they are really smudged now, plus i need to remove some mistakes from the wings. the head looks really good under UV light
for some odd reason the rear skirt has a conector for the joint rifle its awkward to use as the joint rifle is larger that the katana he has
no pics because i cannot into them
i might begin a bootleg phrenex tomorrow, a "xingdong phoenix" if time allows me. knowing those bad bootlegs i am already loathing myself on this choice in particular

the leg attaches to the foot thruster which then attaches to the body. On the HG the thruster goes into a ball joint and the leg pegs in. With HG weight, this is fine. At PG scale, both the connection from the thruster to the body and to the thin foot frame-like piece would have to be strong enough to not be easily moved by the weight of the entire kit.

Head+Torso quick snap
The design is similar to the Zarov in some fundamental ways, and is also generally simpler with fewer parts, but it definitely feels more refined than the Zarov kit. The torso armor is six parts in total, including the grey sections and the cockpit hatch (which is color-separated despite being the same green, for your painting convenience, lest you forget Sheik Mainland started off selling model paints and moved into models to give their customers stuff to paint)

The backpack has its own miniature inner-frame with the thrusters on c-clips for articulation

The head also has a tiny "inner frame" and getting it together is a bit tricky, the eye is easy to touch up with some paint

The kit comes with a sheet of marking and number decals, no stickers

Similarly to the Zarov, Zabol is also pretty hefty compared to bandai HGs (weight-wise, it's heavy)

The various ball joint sockets are solid ABS and have cutouts to prevent cracking

The plastic quality feels better than the Zarov
Everything is undergated

The head joint is double, ball in head and swivel in torso, so it can swing out pretty far forward, and this joint is tight by itself and holds a pose

More to come when I finish snapping this

Also weapons-wise it only comes with the rifle, sabers, and shield

I'm thinking of buying some cheap bootlegs to practice painting etc. How hard to build are they? I'm looking at mainly HGs/ 1/100. Any recs?
>>
>>23560741
RE/100 is the better 1/100 inner frames are a waste of time and turn your model into a hand granade. RE/100s look like MGs but take half as long to build, and they're more sturdy. MG is a meme line.

>>
>>23560983
Depends on the manufacturer.
Avoid WM/Weimei/Warmodel
also avoid WMH and XYS
STAR is decent, has some flashing sometimes
XFS/JMS is consistently good
really most bootlegs that come out nowadays that aren't WM and don't seem "too cheap to be true" are decent

That's essentially what many major manufacturing firms do. Often, the chinese firms will use the brand names to produce machine/ engines/ replacement parts for their own local market's specific custom products etc.

that piece will not fit the Banshee head because it has a different horn design. you can use it, but it will lose the gold part of the piece, which disrespects the novel. you can probably modify it so you can install the horn pieces.

A couple notes no one said, firstly surface prep matters. Scuffing up the surface is better than a lot of shitty primers. It gives the paint something to bite on to. Secondly, a lot of newer painters don't clean their kits. Oils both organic (your dirty sweaty coom covered hands) and inorganic (lube, industrial mold release) can prevent paint from bonding well. A quick swish in a bowl of warm water with a drop of soap in it makes that trivial. I often just give it a quick wipe with ISO as I'm putting things onto paint clips because I'm lazy and impatient. There's a few more paint tips but you're splitting hairs up at that point. These are the big ones that cause the paint to debond easily.

I see. Admittedly I was really impatient because I just wanted to see progress on this project so I primed, painted and topcoated with just a few hours between each step and I handbrushed most of the parts, so that probably didn't help at all. I'll keep that in mind next time.

The one that gives you cancer?
>>
>>23561127
It's quite old and lacking in detail, so sort of like a large HG (clamshell design with seam lines). Mobility like a brick, and I'm honestly not even sure if it has working sub-arms underneath the skirt.

It's effectively a large display piece that looks nice but lacks posing options. The HG is much better engineered but not a big step forward since it is a HG. So, unless you're willing to buy a Chinesium version (I don't even know the status on those except for the recent "Nightingale Armor for the Sazabi" one that was covered in cancer chemicals that gave modelers rashes), it's about the best you've got.
>>

>>
>>23561146
So you can do this, but most primers need to finish curing before you paint over. Seems like in this case your topcoat was securely adhered to your paint which was securely adhered to your primer which had the holding power to the plastic of wet toilet paper. It happens to all of us all the time, I'm very impatient so it happened a lot. Nowadays I tend to paint a bunch of stuff then walk away until tomorrow. Then it's tough enough that even if I break the paint heat order it's fine, unless it was enamel as that can take days or even a few weeks to dry entirely.

I'd unironically buy one, throw in a Oggo and I'd buy that too. They're made for PG line, and Bandai wouldn't have to worry about joint stability either.
>>
>>23560652
Don't worry, PGs are easier to assemble than most RGs since the parts are so large.
>>
>>23561194
Your first kit should always be treated as practice. Don't go straight into an expensive kit that you have stakes in, start with a cheap HG and learn how to properly use your airbrush. Once you have more confidence in your techniques, then you can move on to doing more cool stuff.
>>
>>23561202
I think PG Ball would have very wide-reaching appeal because it could be much cheaper than other PGs, it would be cool on its own merits, it could appeal to non-gundam fans as a general space kit, and it would also appeal to 'le haha funny meme kit' guys
>>
>>23561194
Never start or stop spraying paint while pointing at the kit. Start spraying then move onto the piece, stop spraying after you've moved beyond the piece. Practice on paper with food dye, you would be surprised how tiny and fine you can be, and how broad you could be. Also...basically never fully open up. It always looks bad when it's hosed on.

>go easy on the trigger until you build up some confidence
>always keep the tip clean
>get comfortable taking the airbrush apart and putting it back together to clean it
>if you are using acrylics and aren't happy with the result it is easy to strip the paint and start over so don't be afraid of "ruining" your model
>plastic spoons are great for practice and testing colors because they have a variety of surfaces and are very cheap - you can even scribe panel lines into them if you want
>a high PSI compressor will blast out almost anything: lacquers, enamels, oils, acrylics, glue, top coat, primer, craft paints, nail polish, even texture paints
Experimenting with craft and fine art supplies can be really fun!

Hi, I just picked up my first kit, and I have a question. The manual says to cut the pieces fairly close on the weak bits while leaving a little nub. But guides online say to cut much further away. Which is correct?
Sometimes when I cut further away the piece twists and stresses the other connections.
>>
>>23561307
you must cut it as close as possible to the part, to leave smaller nubs and facilitate nub removal
>>
>>23561307
The thicker bits are part of the runner or tree which contains all the other pieces. The easiest way to prevent stress marks is to cut on the thinner parts, as far away from the part itself, then kit a bit closer when it's out of the runner/tree. This allows you to cut without stressing other connected points like you would in the tree. After experimentation you'll learn how close you can cut with your specific nippers without leaving a stress mark behind after cleaning the nub.
>>
>>23561307
In theory, the stress marks are caused by the entire piece being under tension, and a lot of that energy being released into the cut area the moment it happens. By cutting farther away, you're releasing the energy farther away from the piece itself and thus less likely to cause stress marks. Then when you do the actual cut close to the surface of the piece, the yield from the nub remainder being able to actually twist and turn would make it less likely to leave a stress mark.

Though personally, I feel like a lot of this is just superstition and propagating unproven myths (along the lines of "Tap the A Button each time the Poke Ball shakes to increase the chances of capturing a Pokemon!" type bullshit). If you do proper nub removal using the proper tools (including sanding/filing), you should be mostly fine. But you're also encouraged to eventually get into painting, since stress marks don't matter worth a shit if they're under a layer of primer and paint.

>>23561311
>>23561328
Thank you for the clarification.
I do eventually want to get a spray pistol and paint them, but I already spent a bit on a few kits and tools to justify shipping costs so probably a ways in the future, though.
I'm gonna have to read up on it a lot as well.

There's 2 explanations as to why p-bandai would shelfwarm at a store
1. the prices of them are fucking retarded.
2. The majority of complaining comes from sour grapes and people who felt slighted they didn't have the opportunity to buy something they might not even want in the first place. Now that burgers have the opportunity, they can take a step back and realize that it's not a one time now or never deal.
For all of the complaining about the G Gundam kits being p-bandai, Maxter has been on an open preorder since late August. Rose has been open since July, and Dragon is currently available to buy without needing to wait for the release.

Also take better pictures bub.

Decided to give airbrush painting a try, don't think I made it properly because, despite using four progressively lighter shades (Vallejo's Blue Grey Pale, Sky Grey, White Grey and pure White at the end) I barely see shading progress, despite spraying a little of White Grey and White in pulsing method (aka slightly moving trigger back and forth while keeping air pressed, releasing small pulses of paint). Brush would probably give me much better control.

As for distance, I kept it at around 7-8cm away, if I would get too close, I would pool too much or make "round points" instead. 1.5 bar pressure used, by the way - guide I was referring to recommended pretty high 2.5 or even 3 bar instead (author argued it vastly reduce frequency of jamming) but for me it was just unhandy, even from the distance air stream would blow paint around before it dried.
