Like, how is it so ugly, yet somehow, they made it look genuinely cool in the movie?

I like bulky suits and I think the XI is really top tier. But the fucking Swan neck on the Penelope looks too retarded for me

Aww geez anon, give him, like, a break, y'know?

Agree, I have nothing else to say because you already said it
>>
>>23566185
all these newer gundams just start to look alike.
just a bunch of spikes and triangles slapped on gundam for no rhyme or reason.

this >>23568340 one is a bit better, since i always liked the classic Zaku, but even this one has problems since there's so much busy details and doodads slapped on the Messer.
the general form and shape of the Messer is okay, however, though i think it needs a bit less angles and more curves.
>>
>>23566185
It’s the weight and heft of the thing. These things are built more like battleships than humanoids but they actually move like they look
>>
Why wasnt Banager Links piloting the Penelope????
>>
>>23566185
Quick Question. Just saw the movie. Can novel readers tell me if Hathaway permanently lost half of Xi Gundam's equipment from the botched resupply drop at the end of the movie? They said much of the equipment fell into the ocean. Does Mafty recover the equipment later or is it permanently lost?
>>
>>23574758
Banana is an oc donut steel that is only allowed to pilot modifications of classic suits outside the Unicorn
>>
>>23568342
People always bitch about it being too dark, but when I watched it in HDR on an OLED (in a dark room like I do with all movies) it looked fine to me and I could see the action. Did anyone in the theater bitch about it? I'm really wondering if either the SDR rips or whatever you are using to watch the HDR rip on a SDR display is the problem.
>>
>>23574758
Unicorn isn't canon to Tomino late UC stuff.
>>
>>23566185
Will the second movies bring new designs? They need to sell new kits after all
>>
>>23575123
Probably will be a upgraded Odessyus model and new Gustav Karl model since they have rezel beam rifles in the trailer but I doubt Xi gets a new model to the 3rd movie

Didn't exist before Hatway books existed but he would also tell the Federation to fuck off if they asked him

I wonder if we're getting the missile pod/booster for Xi
>>
>>23574851
I watched it again this morning and action seemed fairly comprehensible, there was this image I didn't save of someone showing how mobile suits should look in the dark based on precedent and they also have them look like how the image depicted in certain scenes.
>>
>>23574758
The Penelope isn't beam magnum compatible plez understand.
>>
>>23574851
I think the editors have their monitors set to gaming mode which is why it looks so dark. But what they don't realize is that cgi mecha doesn't look good in darkness if you're cel shading them.
>>
>>23575219
I assume in movie 3 for the final assault
>>
>>23574851
>>23575277
>>23568342
Nope. The director said he purposely made the battle scenes covered in darkness. Because he thought that the idea of giant mobile suits you can't completely see would be more imposing and frightening.
>>
>>23575558
Yes and it was effective but it's nowhere near as dark as the screenshot would have you believe.
>>
>>23575560
>Yes and it was effective
If the Japanese audience complained about it, then it's not effective.
>>
>>23575573
Maybe I'll get my lying eyes checked by an optometrist then.
>>
>>23575558
There's a lot of appeal in making the mechs a bit more distant and dark and looming, but that's not what they did. They're fully center frame and clear. They're also for some reason always bathed in shadows. It's the worst of both worlds.
>>
>>23575590
Exactly. It clear the Director had an interesting idea. But his execution was very poor.

If he studied cinematography and lighting, then he would know that objects and dip in and out of darkness. It doesn't make any sense for the characters to be fully lit and visible by the city lights, but the mecha to be shrouded in darkness.

I'm not sure how good modern animation software is at simulating lights and light bounce (seems like something Nvidia Ray Tracing would be helpful at), but the director messed up.

I'm Honestly surprising no one at Bandai told him at test screenings that the battles were just too dark.
>>
>>23574769
So can anyone answer Tha question? I just want to know if Xi is fighting with a handicap or is lacking equipment.

Meanwhile in an actual imposing and frightening shot from a properly animated gundam series.....
>>
>>23575635
Composition, lighting, and cinematography from the 1990s.

Ah...what a lost art. What happened to this skill? It's like modern animators learned nothing from the past and just spam CGI like it's the answer to everything.
>>
>>23575657
All the good artists and directors retired or died. Or rather, there's too much anime being produced too quickly due to digital speeding things up. So actual good animation gets buried under the all the mediocre shit and the audience comes in with low standards since everything looks mediocre.
>>
>>23575635
Why doesn't modern anime have this level of shading? I thought computers were supposed to make things easier?

Cels are analog, so they have much more variables(film grain, viginette, lit up with natural light) and produced on film. You can replicate it with digital with a little more work(like the gundam wing anniversary video) but it's faster to just produce shit and have people eat it up.
>>
>>23575710
No money. If you check the credits of a random show you'll most likely see bunch of korean names they outsource the animation to for the sake of cost-cutting
>>
>>23575719
So what you are telling us is that instead of making high quality anime easier to produce at a moderate pace...they decided to make shit quality anime at a very fast paced.

So CGI only ended up help slop tier anime get made more? The amount of high quality anime is the same of even less?
>>
>>23575725
Digital anime started in like 2000, back then computers sucked ass and couldn't produce 1080p video, so they had to ink/color at a lower res like 720p, they couldn't be bothered to make it look more analog(kinda like g-reco's lineart and color palette). Anime went through a "reset" where it looked like shit and eventually everyone got used to the shit and didn't desire good looking anime....they just wanted more moe shit and big tits so anime became cheap shit and stayed that way.

Would've been nice if they just kept tracing cgi like with Unicorn but that's just too much to ask for.

Yes, they look like trash, next topic.
>>
>>23575710
Computers never make things better
>>
>>23577385
pirating anime is exponentially better with computers compared to mailing blank vhs tapes to canada
>>
>>23575724
How can Japanese studios possibly have no money??? Tomino even said the anime industry is getting flooded by foreign investment and so much money is being made from companies like Netflix or Amazon. What's the deal? Where is all the money going?

Penelope is a girl's name.
