Why does it to be fixed? Why does it need to be futuristic? If anything, makes it even more realiable by being a physical weapon that doesnt relay on a power source. Easier to produce and maintain than other weapons second only to the shield because thats always needed.

Secondly, the first Gundam specially, was always silly as hell. If you want to fix anything. Fix the G-Armor more than anything.

Gundam Hammer is fine and sort of fills a niche of being the only mid-range weapon that works without juice since you can just swing it around if the thrusters run out of propellant. Thats why it comes back for Turn A since its more practical than people give it credit for.

I think it's already an interesting weapon for space combat (even the non thruster version) because if you hold the chain near the ball, accelerate towards a target then release the chain it'll continue on that trajectory at that speed for bit even after you change directions or decelerate.
So what I think what I'd change about it is replacing the chain with an adjustable length cable so this maneuver could be done with one hand.

The easiest way would be to install beam spike emitters in the bare spots to increase spike density and overall lethality. Run a cable through the chain so that activation of the beam spikes is done through the handle (you can swing the hammer and turn on the beam spikes mid-flight, and de-activate them upon retrieval so you aren't slicing the Gundam's hands apart with beams). Retaining the original spikes allows it to be used as a weapon even if it's out of power.
