With all the shitty youtubers and tourists rn would be a great time for the gundam cafe.

This. It's not worth it anymore. There are too many foreigners shitting up the place and Japan is on the razor's edge of being unsalvageable.

there's the KimiNozo/Muv Luv tree in Yokohama unless it died already, it was in pretty bad shape a few years ago

If you go to a restaurant in Japan, be sure to order the pineapple salad. It's delicious no matter where you eat it.

Nakano Broadway is a little on the edge of Toyko, it's got a ton of the Mandarake Stores. You can find figures, and artwork and other stuff there for really cheap.

They also have a store in the corner of the mall that is run by and old guy who sells anime cels.

I got one from Turn A Gundam when I went. he had a lot more from various anime and a lot of Gundam ones, even from 0079.
This was back in February though.

There's also a pretty mecha-focused store in Osaka called JUNGLE, I wasn't able to visit but I heard it's good.

You can also check out the Go Nagai museum, I think that's still up.

There's an Americana themed resturaunt in the big subway terminal at tokyo station that had some of the best fries I've ever eaten. It's still on my mind.

They've got a bunch of signed posters and belts from the cast and serve rider-themed drinks

It's also not too far from the LOGH Cafe too

Being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, what else where you expecting?
>>23586102
There’s a super robot museum iirc, it even covers the highly obscure live action tetsujin 28 show from 1960
>>
When I say tourist trap I mean Nigerian guys trying to strongarm you into love hotels and overcharging you for drinks.

Also expect to wait 2hrs in line at any shrine.
>>
>>23606865
If you go to all the usual tourist spots, yes you will see tourists. Again, stop being a retard and just go to places that you don't see advertised in a million youtube/instagram videos. Even somewhere like harajuku has streets nearby which are fucking empty compared to the main street. All you have to do is walk 5-10 minutes in a different direction. I go every year in March and have literally zero issues avoiding large groups of tourists. There is so much of the country to see outside of Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka.

If you go to the tourist spots. You're braindead my man.

does the irl Hikawa Shrine count as tourist? Sailor Otaku's pics looked mostly empty
>>
>>23606942
what's the significance for that shrine?
>>
>>23606945
Sailor Mars works there
iirc the irl is the kanji for ice instead of fire, but from what I've seen Juuban in the old anime is fairly accurate to the area in points

It probably still is pretty empty, but social media influencers have kind of ruined everything that's close to the Shinkansen. Still, a lot of people might not remember/know about Hikawa Shrine. The new and old anime are extremely close to the actual layout of Azabu Juban to the degree that you can identify specific buildings/locations. Just go off the main streets and not to the huge touristy places now that Japan is the place to flex on social media that you went and you will have a great time.

Some lesser known interesting places I have discovered fairly recently:
1. The statue someone mentioned earlier of Tetsujin #28 in Kobe. Location is in a park near Shin-Nagata Station.
2. Statue in Tsuyama, Okayama of the Z Gundam which some guy built just because he wanted to. Which actually has a cockpit. Photo is that one.
3. The Nagoya SCMaglev and Railway Museum which has the the 922 and 923 Doctor Yellow inspection trains.
4. In northern Japan, Ishinomaki, the hometown of Shotaro Ishinomori, which has a small but very nice museum dedicated to his works. Lots of statues all around the town too.
5. Tsuruga is the hometown of Leiji Matsumoto and has statues/museums dedicated to his works.
6. Not /m/ but if you go to West Japan, be sure to go to Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture, which has an entire city street dedicated to the works of Shigeru Mizuki, creator of Gegege no Kitaro. At night the street is illuminated creepily and has ghostly displays.
7. If you're doing #6 might as well also go to Kokuei which is hometown of Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama and has a museum.

Go Nagai museum unfortunately got closed due to the earthquake last year but I heard they're going to renovate it.

Where to buy stuff:
Not Akihabara, Nakano, Ikebukuro, or Den Den Town anymore, collectors have picked those shops clean and prices have risen accordingly. My suggestion is to look for huge sized Book Offs/Hobby Offs in suburban/rural areas.
>>
A few more:
Near Osaka and on the way to Shikoku, the Godzilla Awaji Interception where you ride a zipline into the Big G's mouth. Not sure if this is The Writer's Barely Disguised Fetish or not but there is a nice museum there too with dioramas.

Toei Uzumasa Kyoto Movie Village. This is a studio park Toei used for their warring states period dramas, and every time a character goes back in time in toku they shoot here. It also has a tokusatsu museum and an animation display.

Bonus:
If you want to see the rocks where they shot the Toei movie opening (the waves crashing over rocks) the location is Chiba Prefecture near Inubo Station. The area is called Inubosaki.

Honestly a lot of the mecha related tourist spots kinda suck ass after the closure of the Yokohama Gundam factory but Inagi is pretty neat as a day trip.

North of Tokyo, in Utsunomiya there's a Bandai museum with lots of /m/ shit both Toku and anime, but the big deals are the 1:1 upper torso of the OG Gundam and the 1:1 cockpits for grandpa, Zeta, and Unicorn. Nobody goes there so you don't have to worry about crowds. Japan does kinda suck at the moment though. Lots of Chiniggers there for the weak yen, misbehaving. Lots of Jeets there to staff the convenience stores even out of the way in places like Fukuyama and Niigata. I did have fun with some stuff, taking a steam train up into the mountains to sit in hotsprings? Awesome. I genuinely had a lot of fun hanging out at Lalaport with the Nu Gundam ff. The dickhead tourists have set the standards so low that being just a little bit polite gets people to treat you nice and give you gifts. There's fun to be had in Japan right now, there's just a sort of shadow on it.

just take a 2 hour train ride from tokyo in literally any direction to escape the tourists
(same with osaka and kyoto, but you have to take into account to not ride in one or the other's direction from them)

Was just in Tokyo for the first time for about a week, wish I saw this thread first. I did go see the Unicorn statue in Odaiba and played Extreme Versus 2 Infinite Boost though so that was nice.
