At that time midseason upgrades were the new hotness of mecha shows and so any 50 episode series was going to see the MC getting a new better unit at some point. The Xabungles were designed for a "serious" series which is why they and the Iron Gear look like traditional "hero" robots, but the Walker Gallia was designed to be the midseason upgrade of the goofy western series Xabungle ended up being which is why it ends up being a "fatman" to better fit the MC.
