For me this series has allways been the ''default'' Gundam, a measuring point to which you compare all other works from this genre. Maybe because It was the first one I saw. I've recently read that 83 is supposedly one of the weakest Gundam series. I can see some merit to that, characters are weak, (Kou is an autistic robot, and Nina is...Nina) story is kinda meh too, and by the end it makes no fucking sense. (''Oh, I don't want you to kill this Zenon commander, I don't care if we are at war!'') But in terms of presentation, and character design (Especially Cima, Mora and Bernard) it's simply one of the best. Nothing beats those early 90's anime aesthetics, and you can especially see them shine in ep6 when they crew visits the Von Braun city, and is drinking at the ''Moon Beam''. The whole lunar settlement feels so alive, like it's one Giant Mall. The series needed more slice of life moments like that instead of constant politics/romance/war fuckery.

As a newfag to this franchise, having watched a little over half the anime instalments this year I think I won't have a single default by the time I've finished.
Or, I think most fans have a core impression of the franchise that some works deviate from while I'll have them all within my core impression.
My sense of 'Gundam' will include ZZ, F91, Victory, G Gundam, GQuuuuuuX, and G-Reco, along with everything else.

By the way I think it's really funny how hated Nina is. I respect the amount of venom people have for this lady.

Lavish production an incredible first half by most accounts. Starts to fuck about a bit too much after they get to space. I blame the loss of tension. The whole conspiracy to steal the GPO2 and the desperation on both the zeekes and Albion side to complete their objectives is really fun and dramatic.

Also powered GM is cute.

I don't think Stardust memory's story is weak, it's mostly the love story/drama with Nina coming out of nowhere that is shitty. But the core story of Stardust Memory is about the ghost of Zeon's warrior spirit who got shafted by the one-year war, Gatou represents the noble values of Zeon, not the Gihren/nazi side but the core values of spacenoids who are treated as subhumans by the federation. The last mech of Gatou is a fucking specter for this reason. Kou despite his goodie two shoes side never truely has anything to fight for excepting venging the deaths of his comrades, Gatou is the lingering spirit of a whole nation.

The anime was fine. At least it's better than people say. The afterwards of nuke blast when you hear a lot agony through radio transmissions reminded me Apollo 1 final transmission. And it was also nice to see how Kou became more and more obsessed with fighjting every episode.

>out of nowhere
I mean Nina recognised Kelly and iirc this episode was made by the first director so they always planned this shit.

It makes it so much worse if it actually was the plan because then there's no reason why it's seems so poorly planned and unresolved.
