>>23629597I watched Macross (original) for the first time over the past few days and I loved it. At first I was a fan of Minmei but very quickly enjoyed the growing relationship Hikaru had with Misa. I didn't expect it after having watched Delta previously. Nowadays its so rare for the better matching girl to win the MC bowl so I was so happy that Misa got a good end. I will say though that the final 10 episodes had me doubting that she was going to end up with Hikaru since there was a very hard course change it felt like during the timeskip to have Hikaru once again totally obsessed with Minmei.Overall it was great, I watched DYRL afterwards and it was interesting seeing the retelling of events with better animation. Are there any novels similar to OG Macross? I want to read a scifi mecha/romance but can't find any. Doesn't need to be LN's it can be western as well. Also is the franchise dead in the water right now? There hasn't been anything new about the series after the Delta film.
>>23632914Hikaru was such a piece of shit and didn't deserve Misa.
>>23634441For the most part I didn't mind him, even early on. Once we got to the end of the war he had cooled down in terms of rudeness and was really likeable. The big issue was the constant regression that would appear. One moment he would be a confident leader the next he'd fall back into old tantrums. I actually liked his character progression in regards of the war side of him. It was the constant Minmei obsession that really irritated me. Like, the goodbye between Hikaru and Misa when she goes to Earth to speak with her father was wonderful and better than any interaction between Hikaru and Minmei.
Favorite valk is probably the YF-19, meaning specifically the prototype not the production version. I wish I were decent at model making, since it seems to be the only way to get a proper physical rendition, as the toys just don't do it justice. Otherwise, I imagine a very close runner-up will always be the VF-1J.
>>23635120Macross was going to be around 52 episodes. But the producers didn't believe it would succeed, so they trimemd it to 49, 38 and finally when the series started airing it was going to be 26 episodes. But the success of the first episodes was so huge and the merchandising sold so well that they immediately added 10 episodes more. Of course, at that time they were planning for 26 episodes, so it screwed all the plans of the creators, it had a toll on the show's pacing and it forced them to outsource a lot of minutes worth of TV to shit studios. That's the reason why you have segments that look so badly, like Max and Milia's knife fight, whereas everything that was animated by Studio Nue (the creators) looked fucking gorgeous.Among the animators working together with Nue (not as creators, just chipping in with the drawings and stuff), you had a young Hideaki Anno and Ichiro Itano.
Birthday girl
I like the VF-31A.VF-0 and the Konig Monster are pretty cool too.
>>23636118>Studio NueStudio Nue is not an animation studio. You're thinking of Artland and Anime Friend with the bad episodes being by Star Pro.

>>23636572Yeah, that. Thanks for clarifying.
>>23637243That's basically the D-50C Loto or RXR-44 Guntank F50D from Gundam.
>>23629597why is Macross Zero the best one?
It's impossible to pick just one VF because they're all amazing. But picking just one idol is very easy.
>>23637243wrong Kawamori design
>>23638235That show didnt have the right to be so good.
>>23632914Franchise is doing fine. Sunrise are confirmed to be animating the next show, which is currently in pre-production. They haven't shared much beyond that yet, but it's in the works.Macross isn't sustained by constant new things and spinoffs the same way Gundam is, there's been a consistent pattern of one show a decade. SDF was the 80's, 7 was the 90's, Frontier was the 00's and Delta was the 10's. Plus of course you've got the OVAs and films.
Just finished Macross Plus, what's the general feel for the series? I didn't like it as much as the original since there was way less action and the character interactions weren't particularly engaging. Zentradi guy died as a simp and his body wasn't even cold before Isamu and Myung got together. The whole AI plot felt convoluted and wasn't very good. For the sequel to Macross it felt lacking.
>>23640609Next up is 7 which is... divisive. It's definitely far longer than it needs to be, every episode has a pointless obligatory stock footage fight, the MC is an insufferable Sue and it's by far the most unserious entry. But at the same time, the music is amazing, and it's got SOVL>PlusIt's fuckin' great, Top Gun IN SPACE! Did you know Isamu was voiced by Bryan Cranston in the english dub? As for the Guld thing... the guy did rape her>AI plotThey had to shove in the music plot somehow, wouldn't be Macross without the triangle. And dropping from orbit while Information High plays is peak Macross
>>23640636Even better than SOVL is Heart & Soul
>>23640609Flip up bayonet on a gunpod is the peak of human achievement in animation.

is there a macross sticky/info graphic for watch order and where to get the show?
>>23661661>Original SDF Macross>Optional: DYRL>Macross Plus (movies or OVA, pick 1)>Macross 7>Optional: Macross 7 movies>Macross Zero>Macross Frontier (show)>Macross Frontier (movies, watch the recap movies too its worth it)>Macross Delta>Macross Delta Movies (Same deal as Frontier)Macross 2 is not canon and can be watched at any time
>>23661661I'm pretty sure all of the shows and movies (except for Original SDF Macross, DYRL, and the dub of Macross Plus) are on Hulu right now if you want to watch legally. Otherwise learn how to pirate which you will have to do anyways in order to watch the Original series.
>>23662487The Macross II dub is also missing. Shame as well, since it still holds up well even if the story is rather bland.
>>23661863>Optional: DYRLCan't put it that way, gotta say "come back later" because while doing it right after the show would be dumb it is still required viewing>Optional: Macross 7 moviesNow you're just trying to annoy me. Dynamite 7 sure, that's perhaps the worst Macross anime thing out there. But The Galaxy is Calling Me is the only place to find the best Macross character and 2 of the top 5 Macross songs
>>23662554As someone who didn't enjoy 7, I can say that "The Galaxy Is Calling Me" was what I wanted M7 to be. It's also just a 30 minute episode that doesn't really do anything for the plot.
>>23662487are 80s anime that intense? all the active torrent I see on nyaa are 1GB per episode. I know it's bd release, but I'd imagine the older anime would probably have smaller size. hell the whole 79 gundam were like 4GB total
>>23662936>that intenseim not sure what you're asking.they're probably not compressed as much if theyre 1gb per episode.
>>23662952other terms are just escaping me right now. but from what I noticed anime episodes where's there's lots of action dynamic scenes tend to have higher filesize than the one where not much is going on and characters just talk
>>23662955A big part of how modern video compression works is figuring out how little outright new data you need each frame. If nothing changes from one frame to another, you effectively don't need to store that second frame. If it's a static shot but a mouth moves, you really only need to update the bits around the mouth. Where it gets really clever is that it can also move and warp around pixels from the last frame. If a circle is moving from left to right on a solid background, you really just need to encode the instructions to move those pixels over and some information to fill in what's behind it.Modern anime and live-action content never goes through film, it's always handled as digital information. Unless you introduce it there won't be much random noise in the image, which further assists compression. Random noise is the mortal enemy of compression, because it makes it harder to use all the tricks mentioned above. Film grain is functionally random noise over the image.> but I'd imagine the older anime would probably have smaller sizeHow exactly would you get to that conclusion?>hell the whole 79 gundam were like 4GB totalThat is a horrendously low quality torrent then. When encoding you're balancing between file size and quality. Higher quality, higher file size. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that if the entire show fit in 4 gigs it didn't look quite this nice.

>>23666254No, and they probably never will die as they run and manage real estate as their primary source of income. Holding onto Robotech and thus keeping Macross hostage is purely out of spite and pride.

>>23640636Basara makes more sense when you realize his issue is with how he communicates rather than with how his ideals are wrong.
>>23671131Dude legit has 'tism.
>>23666996But how does this help them to hear your song???
>>23671131Him being an insensitive jerk would be fine if the show didn't reward him for it constantly and have thigns go his way at every turn>Enemy too strong? I'll just sing harder>Can pilot better than military aces while also playing the guitar and singing>Evil soul-eating aliens? I'll just sing harder
>>23671550>Can pilot better than military aces while also playing the guitar and singing>Evil soul-eating aliens? I'll just sing harderConveniently, the guitar is actually a custom flight stick and if you can talk while flying you can also sing. He's also a natural pilot with a cutting edge prototype VF. The aliens are weak to his Anima Spiritia. That said, I hated Basara until about a third of the way through M7.
>>23671645Sure, I can buy that his guitar is just a weird looking flight stick, the problem is that it ALSO plays music. And have you ever tried playing a difficult game while tlaking to friends on discord? You shut up when its time to focus, same reason why streamers play like shit or miss obvious stuff onacreen, they're focusing on talking and playing at the same time. But Basara is singing and playing, already something that most people can do, and ALSO flying a fighter jet better than special forces operatives who've teained all their lives, and ALSO dancing and goofing around instead of shooting to kill. It's Kira Yamato all over again (or before Kira I guess), "I can go easy on the enemies because I'm so far above them". >Prototype VFI thought it was just a VF19 with speakers and a bodykit, the Macross equivalent of a ghetto pimped out lowrider
>>23671694>pimped out lowriderOk, "custom" is a better descriptor than prototype, but that fact remains the VF19 was still a rare bird during M7. And I mostly agree with what you said about gaming online, though I've played one of the toughest online games and my team was always able to talk even in the most stressful times (then again we all have more than 10,000 hours of playtime so maybe it's different?). Not to make excuses for Basara, and it's not explicitly stated in M7, but VF19s have AI to assist pilots and Basara is basically a nuisance, not a hostile threat, so he might have more freedom than you'd expect. Knowing this helps me suspend disbelief. Also, I hated M7 for the first several episodes. The show is more enjoyable if you think of it as a silly comedy. It's pretty ridiculous. Planet Dance? Are you kidding me?
