How can this be such an unparalleled masterpiece? The more I rewatch it the more I feel like this is one of the fullest expressions of the anime media, as it somehow mixes everything that is good about anime into a coherent aesthetic vision. The mix between school/sport drama and mecha works and fits together because of the "time travel" theme. "Going to space" is at the same time a literal element of a cool plot and a metaphor for remaining a child forever (as one does while consooming mecha anime), but at the same time, "space" (i.e. childhood's mental space) is also where real existential conflicts are fought: only those with fantasy and imagination, who remain children (a theme Anno develops in Eva) can save the universe. This is my personal schizo-interpretation - but overall the scale, the animation, the aesthetic... Even the fanservice manages to be artistic: I think about scenes like Noriko rolling in bed and you see her breasts through the shirt, or the beach day with Jung - it's even voyeuristic, it feels like just a way of looking at those girls who are young and beautiful and so full of life that they can save the universe.I loved this. I think Diebuster is also cool but I wish Anno would come back to the franchise and do more with it.
