So why the hell did he do something so blatantly foolish as to leak his and Reinhard's location instead of a false one to lure the Terraists? Was he trying to get himself Valhalla'd?

Also, looking to buy the translated LOGH books by Mr. Huddlestone; I've heard there are problems. Is this the case, how bad are they, and are there any alternatives you could recommend me?

oberstein is the goldenlowe revolution's most dedicated soldier
under reinhard's policies cripples like him aren't ethnic cleansed. because of this even in a history that itself admits is probably full of slander against oberstein they still feel the need to mention him throwing himself in front of explosives aimed at reinhard twice. the point of his character is that there are probably people who get a bad rap from historians even though they might've been passionate heroes in reality

It's a tad late here so maybe my brain is hardly working here, but what were his motives for doing something so risky? Because he thought lowly of himself because of the stigma from his disabilities and wanted to prove his loyalty?

NTA but I think he simply found Reinhard necessary for a better empire and also picrel. He probably objectively viewed himself as more expendable than Reinhard, I don't think emotions or subjectivity really factor into Oberstein's thinking.

I see - I suppose I interpreted the subtitles in picrel differently. Thought he had low self esteem or something and was trying to get to Valhalla upset that he had never really been into battle. Still, even if it wasn't for that why risk your own life like that? I liked him and that was such a silly way for him to go. It probably has a reason that I've not inferred from watching it but still.

He didn't really seem the religious or superstitious type to think about Valhalla like the other admirals, if anything he was pragmatic to a fault and really fixated on "the end justifies the means" sort of thinking.

IIRC when he first approaches Reinhard, he revealed himself to have artificial eyes due to a birth defect and said that if he had been born earlier in the galactic empire's history, he would have been killed as a baby and never would have had a chance at life, so I think he was really loyal to Reinhard's eventual takeover and reforming the ways of the empire.

Yeah, no, say what you will about Oberstein, but he's loyal to the cause. Better empire and a better kaiser, whether it's a low self-esteem thing for his defects or objectively seeing that an unfun unliked calculating robot was worth less than a charismatic, beloved, and fair kaiser, you can count on Oberstein to advance the cause of the empire! Through any fucking means necessary!

You could probably simplify it as Terraists were a problem that should be dealt with and Reinhard was dying.

On another level you could look at it as they weren't much of a threat anymore, but they were the last opposition to Reinhard's conquest thus should be gone before they died so that Reinhard's ambitions could be fulfilled.

For Oberstein taking the bomb it could be taking responsibility for leaking the position, personal doubts about maintaining his position without Reinhard, adherence to the idea that he was the Kaiser's shadow so he had no place in the world if Reinhard died, he could have ridden the if only Kercheis were alive bus too hard and blamed himself for Reinhard's decline or some combination of the ideas.

It's one of those scenes where its left to the audience to decide whether it was from logic or an emotional action.

Yeah, there's plenty of why's. I saw it as a desperate attempt to have Reinhard witness his full victory before his passing, and sacrificing himself to assume responsibility for his actions.

>Is this the case, how bad are they,

The first three volumes are fine. About the fourth volume there sart being really weird translation mistakes - things like "$character forcefully took $same_character to another planet" or using a name that could not have possibly been in that scene. Basically from what I could tell, it was dogshit editing, not bad translating. That's where I stopped, so I don't know if they got better later.

>Pic related.
That's a history revision from the old OVA.

Yeah, I do recall hearing that the novels (and the new show) just straight up have Reinhard responsible for this, I don't know which I'd prefer more
>>

I like the novel version, it shows that Reinhard is willing to get dirty to fulfill his ambition, in contrast with Yang who will keep his ideal at the cost of his own life.
To me the that part of the original OVA just makes Reinhard of someone who could do no wrong.
