the idea that eva is this anti-otaku series was literally just made up by evamonkey in the early 2000s to feel better about liking a cartoon. it has basically no basis in reality.anno thinks its totally fine to reject reality, hole up in your room, and watch anime all day. his issue is with the idea of, like, reflexive insecurity about that. you want people to reach out to you, but they have to put in all the work, and you push them away the whole time. you want friends, but you make no effort to get any. shinji's arc is super clearly about that. asuka actually pushes back, so he's almost afraid of her, and he keeps prodding rei to do something but she never does. his idealized idea of a companion is kaworu, who does reach out to him and push past his walls, but kaworu is in all of one episode. thats the whole idea. the problem isnt 'FUCK YOU OTAKU' the problem is like, this self-pitying ego where you want comfort and expect other people to give it without even asking them to.they literally have a giant speech about this with the hedgehog's dilemma thing but everyone's too busy making up a show in their heads to pay attention.
