I've never written mecha fanfiction, but I have written fanfiction before before I removed basically all of it. I wrote something that started in the outline as a Gundam AU fanfiction before it transformed into it's own thing. I haven't published it anywhere because I haven't gotten anyone to read through it and I'm too private to share it with anyone outside of very close friends, but I've completed the main saga. I really wish I could find someone to work with to design the robots. The fanfiction I wrote got pretty positive reviews, so I think my writing is actually good, but I'm not very good at drawing and mecha is something I have no experience with.

I think that one started from a joke someone made about Char and Amuro surviving the Axis Shock and becoming a pair of buddy cops and just kind of went for a few months from there, used to have a bookmark of the livejournal or whatever someone compiled a bunch of the posts to but lost said bookmark a few years back.

I once tried jotting down ideas for a sort of AU/bootleg concept of SRW in an alternate universe, which boiled down to names and concepts for series ideas where each one was supposed to be pastiches/homages/etc. to different franchises from /m/ history, including cast lists for the different not-SRW games and their in-universe reception, notable interactions in-game, etc., though it never really went much of anywhere, and was more a thought experiment than anything.

Now that the wheels are greased I'll talk about my own /m/ficits called Mobile Suit Gundam: Butterfly. It's a universal century gundam AU I've begun writing on proper and I'm sitting at 10,000+ words on it right now. FYI if some of this sounds familiar I swear to God I started outlining this well before gquacksBasically a few things happen differently in the one year war, including Char's assassination attempt on Garma failing at S3 point and Amuro falling in battle with Lalah at Solomon, as well as Gihren being taken out by Kycilia early. The war drags on as zeon adopts the "Zeon Rebirth Plan" as drafted by Garma and Dozle, a radical shift in their military doctrine and resource management, absorbing neutral territories into the foreign legion as the Federation's momentum stalls with their edge having been lost and the gundam's wreckage and combat data having been recovered. Tech branches off into new directions in the second year of the "Zeon War" After Zeon officially takes Granada and later Von Braun after a prolonged siege with their SDF, the Federation's production facilities are brutally swept from them. In an all-out attack to liberate Von Braun for their last chance at gaining leverage to negotiate a better deal to end the war, the Federation secretly executes "operation butterfly," where the titular gundam is sent deep behind enemy lines to Granada to eliminate multiple Big Zam Jr units who are staging for a push on the frontline. The attack fails, and eventually the Federation unconditionally surrenders.The story picks up in 0087, where the now gutted "United Federation" is well under the boot of a much more culturally, economically, and militarily powerful Zeon. Most of the important 0079 characters don't actually make appearances in the main story, as it follows a plot by the new Federation black ops and intelligence organization "Titans" and their plan to recover the Butterfly Gundam from a zeon testing colony in Side 6 and rejuvenate the UF

How I interpret characters and what seems like natural dialogue to me is jarringly at odds with what most people read about character personalities and how they expect they should talk. People read what I've written and end up completely misunderstanding the characters, and by extension, their motivations in the narrative.How do I even explain it? The easiest example is with griffith from berserk. To me, I think it's very clear he's a moral, principled character forced by his own ideals into making a certain choice. It's demonstrated that he dislikes but has had to grow comfortable with the idea of people dying for him to achieve his dream, and that he's willing to sacrifice his own butthole to avoid that happening. And he outright explains that the people who have already died for his dream are the reason he can't stop before achieving it, because if he did, they would have died for nothing. So his guilt and responsibility for the dead trap him into accepting the godhand's offer.Other people look at the character and go 'he just wants power at any cost'.Everything I try to write turns out like that. People assume the most superficial take while ignoring all the very deliberate scenes that essentially spell out who the character is and what they want/why they do what they do.Ultimately this is a relatability issue, I do not understand how to make an audience sympathize with a character that should be sympathetic, for example, because I do not understand what normies find sympathetic.

I don’t do fanfiction that much anymore. It just ends up turning into my own work when I prefer to do things my way instead of dealing with existing canon or concepts. Case in point, the current thing I’m working on. It began as an idea for a Xenogears animated series adaptation like Castlevania but morphed quickly into my own ideas. In terms of the mecha influences, it’s all based on Patlabor, Armored Core, and Full Metal Panic. The world itself also morphed into Strangereal from Ace Combat with some advanced tech and 80’s-90’’s computers/media thrown in. Collaborating with my friend also gave it a more western vibe over time. I also insisted on the protagonists being female because waifus of course.

Kind of like how Macross was a Gundam parody series but by the time it actually started To elaborate on the setting, I set it in the near future of the 2120s and technologically the world is not particularly different from how it currently is, and it's all set on Earth though there's mentions of the Moon being mined and settled with orbiting rotating colonies in the background. The biggest difference is the UN is essentially a global government and acts as a single unified nation, which is being challenged by a nominally socialist coalition in the East with Russia and China as the major partners. In this setting the Cold War has gone hot and the war has been raging since the beginning of the century, essentially right after they broke away. I have a detailed timeline all the way back to the 2020s, which is about when I started writing up until well after the conflict. I've even had to edit it to reflect some current events. I actually started writing way before Russia-Ukraine happened and that is obviously a pretty important conflict that would factor into global affairs. In the setting, World War III erupted in 2024 essentially between NATO and a coalition of Russia, China, and a few other countries, due to all the current global conflicts and resulted in a NATO victory, but Washington D.C. was nuked. In return, Moscow and Beijing were also nuked and they surrendered shortly after to prevent any further destruction. Anyway sorrry for the text dump but like I said, I've been writing this for years now and have a pretty in-depth history.
The Doing-Things multiverse has been my baby for decades, a shockingly weird but fun (or at least my readers seem to think so) mix of /a/, /d/, /h/, /k/, /m/, and /tg/. I can post my copypasta about it if anyone wants but really don't like releasing full installments outside my friend group since it's both my personal sandbox where I can feel free to try whatever weird shit I want without fear, and because I can also let my autism run free with all the implications thereof. They all have a globally standard cockpit design but that's because the mecha existed decades before the current conflict and the breakaway socialist faction used to be part of the UN. Im a proud crossover slopper and my idea is simply Char Aznable, after testing a Neo Zeon experimental suit appears on Remnant, where he meets and usurps the identity of Jaune Arc, who dies to Grimm in his stead. I thought it would be funny that Casval, who pretends to be Char now is trying to pretend to be a loser in an academy full of teenagers with magic powers and no mechas (yet).

I was working on a draft of trying to make a scenario from Gundam vs Zeta Gundam where Char's Counterattack happens during 87 instead work as an actual thing, then I realizes the fuckhuge amount of work it would require and gave up.

Mobile dolls would be AI for example. Trieze would obviously be anti AI, the gundams would have AI integration(ex. Wufeis wife personality is his gundams AI, Wing Zeros system would be the ultimate AI predicting the future). Also I thought about fixing the disaster fanfic that is gcuxx. Mainly the ending zeknova I would have it tie into the canon universe by having it connect to CCA. The zeknova pulls in Char/Amuro during the psychoframe explosion which is what causes axis to be pulled away. I could go into more detail but fuck it, gcux fans don't deserve to see or know what good writing is.

I've been slowly developing a Gundam AU that's basically a retelling of the UC except everything is multiplied by 10 or 100 and it's heavily influenced by Dune/Foundation. In my mind it's called "Gundam but Good."
