-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

I bought godhands last week and the two cut method with two nippers is such a snapshitter golem goyslave-coded chore. I paint so end up sanding it anyways. It's just an extra pointless step. I'm just going to use them normally on everything but clear plastic until they break
>>

My last pair lasted 6 or 7 years cutting anything and everything I wanted including clear plastic
Two cut method is completely pointless with single bladed nippers, you're cutting through the exact same amount of plastic either way unless it's one of those huge honking runner gates that very occasionally crop up

If you really look at gunpla, or any plastic model, you'll notice a lot of the surfaces are uneven from the sink marks. It's a lot more apparent if you paint but it's still noticeable on bare plastic. It's usually on parts that have features on the back.
It's less noticeable on lighter parts, but here's a white part I haven't cleaned up yet. You can notice the odd luster showing that the surface isn't perfectly flat. Sanding or making it completely matte are the only ways to fix it. Even making it matte isn't enough for some parts. Half of why painted builds look better is the sanding,

This is the first model nobully I put together just a bit ago. I'm not going to pretend to be a pro but even though I tried to take my sweet ass time with nibbling nubs away there are some that would never look good no matter how much I nibbled or tried other techniques. Look at the ugly spots on the black parts of the wings. I really don't think there is any way to get rid of that without spending time sanding it all down. Maybe a matte clear coat will cover things up a little but it really needs to be sanded. There might be some clever solutions to help but if I want those nubs gone I just have to spend some time attacking it with various grits of sanding. Maybe some puddy spray but that will sacrifice detail then I would HAVE to paint it.
>>
>>23700157
>rotated
Oh yeah. Fack. Well you can still see what I'm talking about.
>>
>>23700157
glass file + rubbing with your finger nail will eliminate most of them but dark coloured plastic is always at the mercy of stress marks
by the way, crop your pictures by a single pixel before you post them and your rotation won't ever fuck up.
>>
>>23700157
Dark plastic like that marks really badly. You can use a sharp exacto knife or good single edged nippers to mitigate it pretty well but a stress mark is inevitable. You're really only gonna get rid of that by sanding it off.
What can help without paint is a few things. Clearcoat helps but will never completely remove it. If you have the surface perfectly flat you can rub it with the tip of a fingernail to make it less noticable. You can also put a drop of extra thin cement on the stress mark to melt the surface a bit and remove it. You'll still need to sand after this, but less than if you didnt.
Ultimately, painting is fun and you won't need to worry about stress marks anymore. Sanding is inevitable either way.

I just barely finished the model late "sunday" night and have been working all week. I need another trip to the store for supplies then I'll get back to work on it. why would it be scraped to bare metal on all the exterior corners? if it's some old thing that's not well maintained there would be rust on the upward faces. If it's a well maintained machine, you would apply touch up pant in spots where the pain genuinely fell off over time to maintain camoflauge. If you want to say there's scraping in spots in active use, it would be at the contact points between moving parts, not the outsiedes of the writsts or something.

I was looking at the sponges but I didn't see many people mention them so I was skeptical. I'll take a peek. I don't think I plan on doing much painting right now. I got a whole pile of kickstarter garbage board games with plenty of bullshit to practice painting on. Once I'm a little more confident from those I might lean into it on plasmo.
>>
>>23700437
They work fine, but if you're going to use them on every surface of a kit it's going to be very tedious. They can still be useful later on, like if you get orange peel after painting, you can use them to polish the paint without damaging it as it's really just two high grits on both sides
>>
>>23700437
I love the GH sponges and equivalents, they're wonderful. Easy to get anywhere you need it to, in handy sizes (I really like the longer strips) and are pretty readily available around me. Not the cheapest solution compared to others, but the comfort and ease is worth it to me compared to anything else especially for surface work.

Any serious amount of plastic removal or heavy reshaping gets the ole 100 grit popsicle of death though.

I was a scrawny emo faggot in high school. Bitches love a guy who's eyeliner game is better than theirs. Anyway part of that was painting my nails. I was always jealous that grills get to go nuts and have all kinds of fun with nail polish and designs and stuff. I don't wear nail polish anymore but I am borderline obsessed with my nails. I use those shining sponges and everything. But yeah that's why. I'm obsessed with nails. Turns out bitches also love a dude that has pretty nails. They don't want dirty, long, sharp edged and snaggly nails inside them. If she's interested, she will check.

If I don't use glass file(dspiae siren) because of curved surfaces and shit or if I afraid to scratch with file too much I'll go like this:
400/600/800/1000/2000 and then go with buffing stick from Gunprimer or Wave for matte/gloss finish
Before that I have run 400/600/800/1000/2000/4000/8000
It's super time consuming, but at least I am satisfied with results
So for starters I would advice you to get 400/600/800/1000/2000 sanding sponges and some buffing sponge/stick
>>
>>23700643
>4000/8000
can you even tell the difference for anything except clear parts at that point?
>>
I wonder what other color differences are there between the manga and light novel versions of the Ikaruga. The only physical change is the head, and the anime head looks better than the LN version. It's so that I can give ideas for the ideal Magatsu-Ikaruga, which can only be replicated with the MODEROID DX-SCALE kits.
>>
>>23700650
It's just for buffing, with 8000 you can get more of gloss look, but could be a tad bit glossier than original plastic, if you overdo it.

The S Gundam is equipped with a learning AI called Alice to help adjust the mobile suit to the pilot's specifications, and can take control of it if necessary. The way it's setup, Alice is designed to fall in love with the pilot, a "rebellious upstart with little regard for authority, but a strong sense of justice". They had to find someone that fits that criteria to pilot it. This way Alice will continue to improve herself and the S Gundam to try and impress her pilot, hopeful for his attention.

However, the pilot isn't to ever be informed of Alice's existence, as mutual contact between the pilot and Alice will cause Alice's infatuation to eventually fade from the harsh reality of the relationship not being as good as she hoped it would be, and so her love must remain unrequited. Alice only got stronger when the S Gundam was upgraded to the Ex-S Gundam.

I use them to hold up stuff that I need to spray paint or clear coat and find weird little uses for random shit around the house. Curiously useful but you don't need to keep all of them. Just keep a handful of the big frames around. Also nice for testing paint, liners, glue, or whatever else you want to put on the model but aren't sure if it'll wreck the plastic or leave weird looking blobs.
>>
>>23701350
They do it every other week too. I like to go during off weeks and see if there's anything good. If there is I just stash it behind the boomer models and grab it once the sale starts.
>>
>>23701346
There's a few uses.

1. Paint testing
2. Hole-filling (they're 3mm diameter which is perfect for shoving into 3mm holes to make bridging connections and such)
3. Scratchbuilding projects
4. Melting into goo for repairs or other similar projects

You don't need to keep every single runner, but having plastic in the exact same color as a particular part on your kit might be useful sometimes.

>>23701350
Keep in mind, they're getting squeezed by tariffs too so their prices have been gradually increasing for at least the past year. I bought the HG Kshatriya for $30 after discount about two years ago, if you went and tried to buy one now it costs quite a bit more.

Yeah, plenty. I grew up building the 90s AU kits with the Wing craze in the first place but I've picked up some of the even older ones. I've got the old 1/144 S Booster in my closet, and the Nemo and MK II from Z's initial run off the top of my head. Compared to modern kits they're pretty lacking, 99% of them are clamshells with awful seamlines and really basic molding. Their proportions overall are also quite different than any modern interpretation, which is really up to you whether it's a plus or minus. The 1/100s from F91/F90/SF91 and later are all pretty decent though. There's a big quality shift from basically the 80s to the 90s lines.

I don't really have the space for an airbrush, but I've thought about hand-painting. I'll probably get around to it eventually, and I know what I'll do when I feel like it.
>>
>>23701515
Some colors benefit from paint a lot more than others. The blue is all painted because dealing with the stress marks on blue is more work than painting it is. The larger red parts are painted, but the small ones are not.
White is kinda pointless if you like the shade already since stress marks aren't a real issue on it and topcoat can make the gloss uniform between sanded and unsanded surfaces.
Some of those white parts are painted though, to hide the work I did on them. I just painted them the same color so they'd match. I doubt anyone would be able to point out which ones are painted and which aren't without me pointing it out.

>>23701519
Brush painting is fun too.
>>
Can someone tell me the logic behind silver coat and then clear colors over it instead of mixing the clear colors in with the silver itself?
>>
>>23701521
ah ok. i am planning on getting into painting and i think for most of my shi i want to make it shiny but some stuff like mg zz ver ka i feel like it would look good with just a matte top coat
>>
>>23701528
Gloss coats are really hard to get with a paintbrush. I strongly suggest brush painting with normal paints, getting an even coat and then using a rattle can of gloss topcoat over that if it's what you want.
The blue plastic on that ZZ marks really badly. I would suggest painting it.

i want to use an airbrush for it. like mr color candy coats or mr crystal color pearl. this type shi is why i want to do painting. so i think it's ok because i would be making it shiny even if it is the same color and there's no shading.

>>
>>23701552

>>
>>23701524
You don't really want to mix metallics with non-metallics, the flakes are going to distribute evenly through the mixture. The point of spraying clear colours after is that you start with a smooth, reflective silver coat that you then progressively tint.
>>
>>23701559
There's also the point that clear paints want to dry slow and metallics want to dry fast.
>>
>>23701555
Are they actually? Gundam Lfrith for example I looked up is $22. On Penis Bandai Lfrith Jiu is $24 burgers.
>>
>>23701559
Thanks, I'm thinking about doing something with stencils and thought it might be a pain to them separately since it means leaving the stencils on long enough for the silver to dry, or make sure it's placed exactly right. I think the answer is using the mr metallic colors then.

My thought process was that it was just better to get the all the kits I wanted down the line now while they're still relatively easy and cheaper to get, instead of down the line where they're maybe 1.5x the price due to rarity or being out of production. The local sellers in my area were charging 2x msrp for the WFM P-Bandai kits and I got them for base retail with free P-Bandai shipping. I got the Barbatos Lupus Rex for $60 from some random shop during Christmas and the local Gundam store I visited today is asking $85 for it which is bonkers.

any recommendation on which I should build first?
given the pg unleashed has "stages" I figure it might be easier since I can just cut out the parts in stages and bag them up ahead of time ready to go?

Are bootlegs pretty much the same as Bandai or is the quality really shitty? How bad are the fitting issues?
>>
I will never talk shit about Bandai ever again if they make RG G-Falcon for X's anniversary.
>>
>>23701680
The age of bad bootlegs is over. They are now on par with Bandai. Same with luxury goods like designer clothes/bags. The Chinese have really stepped up their game.
>>
>>23701695
Ah sweet. I’ve only ever builded one bootleg a daban tallgeese mg and it was so bad that it kind of turned me off from bootlegs. So I was wondering if the other ones were like that too or if I just got a bad one. The fitting issues just made it not a fun snap and it really didn’t save me that much money. But there’s a few bootlegs I’m interested in like mgex unicorn since the retail prices are rape.
>>
>>23701694
How come some of the 90s gundams like x and turn a and v don’t really get a lot of gunpla? Wing gets a lot of gunpla and g and f91 and the 08th normie team gets a decent amount. And then pretty much everything from the 80s and 2000s gets gunpla with early uc, seed, and 00, and then all the newer shows from 2010s on get gunpla except age and g reco which sucked.
>>
>>23701698
well you're in luck with the MGEX Unicorn bootleg since it's the latest one and likely to be really high quality
>>
>>23701680
Depends on the bootlegging company. You'll always have fitting issues since even most Japanese companies don't put in the same effort as Bandai. The Chinese companies will often cut corners, though it's a bit less likely for the ones that are trying to make "original" kits; loads of flash, super tight or super loose fittings, things like that. The chances of bad parts is less these days (though never zero), but you'll still need to put in more effort to make Chinese kits work.
>>
>>23701680
They're like 90% as good as Bandai. You'll need to glue loose parts and/or sand down tight parts but there won't be any major issues. Also there might be more swirling on the plastic but if you're painting that's a non-issue.
>>
>>23701703
>>23701704
>>23701711

Also possible are (in rough order of likelihood):
Destiny (Spec II and glowing joints from P-Bandai)
Freedom
Force Impulse (Spec II, and all other silhouettes from P-Bandai)
Rising Freedom
PGU Zeta
PGU Wing Zero Custom
Gundam Mk-II 2.0 (it's not loved enough to get a PGU)
F91
Hi-Nu
00 Qan[T]
Wing TV, Wing EW, or Wing Zero TV (most likely Wing EW)
Shining/God

NTA but when it comes to Gundam, it is abit hard to appreciate a robot based on its performance in the anime. You can make excuses like " But but it appears in this anime i like", but we all know no one ask for action figure of fucking Gilboa Sant or Gyunei Guss just because they appear in popular Gundam media. Gunpla's popularity has always been the designs, no one give a flying fuck about who pilot Gouf Custom or Ex S.

on the other hand i had a hobbystar exia that had some real fitting issues even before trying to wire it with LEDs but that kit is also 7+ years dated at this point

Talk about Byarlant, in the past, it had 2 sloppy releases. A 1/220 scaled plastic kit and a 1/144 resin BCLUB kit. Byarlant Custom kinda continued this legacy with a cheaply made HG released in 2012 along with a handful of Pbandai retools. Bandai kept forcing this poor thing to become normie friendly with the culmination of it known as Bandee Dessiny. Apparently no one bought these Pbandai variants and Bandai said " fuck this shit, we go back to basic " and just retool Byarlant Isolde into the classic Byarlant.
>>
>>23702820
How come Bandai struggled so much to make it normie friendly if it already ranks pretty highly on r/gundam?
>>
>>23702834
Normalfags (true) just want the protagonists' suits or big name main antagonists' suits. Despite the meme, reddit's hobby subs aren't exactly THAT normalfag. Not as maladjusted as /m/, but still quite down in the nerd rabbit hole.
>>
>>23702847
They're just as maladjusted. It's just that the maladjustment is enforced so they don't argue since anyone who disagrees is immediately banned.

Not really. You can argue or disagree, you only get banned if you're being a dick. You are free to say you think a kit is badly designed or whatever, you just get banned if you call others a retarded nigger for not agreeing with you. People on 4chan like to act like reddit is some draconian no fun allowed police, but the truth it is, a lot of 4channers think that they're getting censored just because they can't throw insults and use slurs.
>>
>>23702851
It sounds like it could be a gundam backstory. A faction of autists takes control and use their power to suppress everyone who disagrees with their narrow worldview because they can’t handle people having opinions other than their own. Makes me kind of wonder why 4chan is even an autist magnet in the first place instead of them just going to their own echo chambers.
>>
>>23702863
I don't doubt that there are some random subs that are like that, or some super mainstream topics subs that are like that. But over the years, from what I've seen, at least for the hobby subs, it's mainly like what I said here >>23702860
Time and time again I've seen people complained about being banned and then you see the posts that got them banned. Hello fags, very new to this, got gifted by the GF a random SD for christmas because she saw me browsing gunplas way back but I never commited.
Anyways, I bought a couple of bootlegs because here in sPAIN a regular HG costs from 30 to 50 € and I´m not botching one of those for practice. So is there anyway that I can skip the brand stuff for getting rid of the seam lines? or is the tamyia thinner a must?

>>23702987
Lots of companies sell their own equivalent to Tamiya plastic cement, you can probably find alternatives. Vallejo sells a modeling putty (looks like a tube of toothpaste) you can also use to fill in seams. You'll have to paint over it, though.
>Also can I rattle can a matt finish with shit from local chinesium stores?
Just make sure it's meant to be used on plastic. Test it on spare runner pieces first and don't start spraying directly on the piece. Start spraying a couple centimeters away and then move on to the piece, then continue moving your arm until you are no longer spraying on the piece. That's when you can stop spraying.
The guides in the OP were extremely helpful to me when I started out. Definitely take a look at those.

>is plastic cement a must
For Bandai kits, only if you are modifying parts.
>gap filling
Gap filling is probably something you want to think about only after you've snapped your first couple of kits. You should worry about sanding nubs first and foremost.

You can use plastic cement for gap filling by cutting the nubs for a closer fit, then glueing both sides, squeezing excess material from the seam, then shaving down that excess. This is the only method that maintains the colour of the plastic. I prefer putty for gapfilling since I paint my models.
Again, don't worry about gapfilling until you can get your nubs smooth, you can always disassemble and fill them later.

it's a lacquer paint, which is typically only airbrushed, since lacquers are "hot" and will reactivate other lacquer and acrylic paints, and so will pick up paints from lower layers if brushed (they just sit on top when airbrushed properly though). Some people use this to create interesting surface effects with a paintbrush, but it is very niche, and 99.9% just use an airbrush.

Thank you for the qrd, I'm very new to painting and I want my first real build to be aoz. Shame I can't brush with this but I have rattle cans in titans colors so it's no biggie

Gallus J didn't feature for more than actually single digit seconds while getting absolutely clowned on by the Byarlant Custom, which had one of if not the coolest fight scenes of the entire OVA. The Sturm Gallus got its kit first because it got a strong showing and did cool shit.

Here's a guide regarding paint types that I think will be helpful:

OG byar is simply not that popular, which is a shame because as cool as the custom is, I gotta have that monoeye.

with enough PSI and flow improver, all paints are airbrush paint

I tried Reddit once. First I learned I couldn't talk in the basic boring subs I wanted to because I didn't have enough Karma. Then I learned I couldn't get that karma without posting, and there's no way to tell which places let you post or not without that karma, so everyone has to resort to farming karma. Ontop of that, once I got the ability to post, I just talked friendly, supportive gunpla. I work professionally so speaking productively while maintaining a kind disposition is easy. If there was some kind of shitflinging I just went elsewhere. I actually despised what the community forced me to be through this silent stomp of control, I couldn't speak my mind, even kindly. Eventually someone asked for feedback and I noted their camera was dirty. I was banned from r/gunpla for noting that a microfiber cloth to the camera lens before pictures on a smartphone was a good habit. I didn't look close enough, it was some troon mod's post. A friend of mine was in the r/gunpla discord and was scarred by the marathonbuilding regards. Buy a ton of kits, speedbuild them on weekends when they didn't have custody of their kids, and then throw most of them into the trash because they didn't like/care about them and they were low quality builds. He sold a painted kit to one of the marathon builders, who then threw his version away to display the painted one. The waste was awful prior to covid, and since then the gunpla acquisition task is dreadful, making them disgusting. Go back home, go away. Your kind are fucking shameful, revolting and should be gatekept in every way everywhere that sane people not beholden to shallow capitalist desires are.

okay, schizo

I've popped onto the r/gunpla discord occasionally, and never seen people straight up throwing their kits away, do you have screenshots or just anecdotes?
>>
>>23703171
seriously, most I've seen will balk at the idea of throwing away boxes and runners, I can't imagine anyone seriously throwing away entire kits.
>>
>>23703171
>never seen people straight up throwing their kits away
Dunno about reddit but we had a guy here who threw away his HG GP03
>>
>you can't throw away kit because.... you just can't ok?

the entire thing sounds like a chatGPT post
whether it is or isn't, it's obviously insincere ragebait.

No, OG Byarlant is "popular", but in an infamous way. The Japanese consider it as a waifu killer because it killed Four. You can ragebait any Zetafags when they post Four Murasame pics by replying with Byarlant pics. It has such an infamy that even Bandai themselves hesitated to make 1/144 plastic kit for it for a really long time.

took a while to come up with more bullshit to peddle huh

Byarlant is popular for being the only suit in which Jerid wasn't a pathetic jobber

Show your fucking byarlants. It has at least 6 kits with 3 being PB.

>People on 4chan like to act like reddit is some draconian no fun allowed police, but the truth it is, a lot of 4channers think that they're getting censored just because they can't throw insults and use slurs.
Reddit is made of a bunch of resetera rejects who piss and shit their pants everytime they see a remotely sexy female character in anime. The subreddit also ran by a bunch of faggots who ban you over the pettiest reason. You can be a super clean, politically corrected good boy and will still getting suspensions one way or another.

noticing that people like the custom because it had a cool fight scene?

Reddit wrote this. I wrote the post he's replying to, it's true. I left 4chins ages ago and only returned after starting gunpla. I also looked around the internet for other places to see builds and learn, that's when I stumbled into reddit.
>>23703171
>>23703173
So this is secondhand, I have no screenshots. This is a close friend whom I trust. He described a subgroup of about 12 people in the discord who would do "speedbuilds" on the weekends and would power through the kits as fast as possible, bragging about building 10-20 in a day. He gently asked what they did with the old kits, because in a year that's...that's a lot of plastic. A few in the group said since some kits are just what's available repeatedly (low US stock under old Bluefin prior to acquisition) so many were just chosen amongst the most pleasing build and the inferior ones were thrown away. When I first heard of it, I talked in this thread about it and the /m/cord.
