The meme was and is always giving the smaller creature the weapon, with the caption attributed to the one taking the photograph. Traditionally, when handing others weapons, you do it with the handle pointed towards them so they can grasp it immediately. A similar principle can be applied to things like knives and scissors, you hold onto the business end in your hand with the handle facing the person you are giving it to.
