So yeah I know its been out in Japan for a few months now and pretty much everybody agrees that its poorly edited even by compilation standards but Im still surprised at how little discussion it gets. The American release is this week and I have a ticket to see it tonight. Im feeling kinda sick today (chronic illness, not contagious) but I intend to brave it if at all possible because I really want to give this film a fair chance instead of getting all my opinions from the borg collective that is social media.

Its getting double featured with EW which is kind of funny because the advertising seems to be hyping the opportunity to see a 30 year old wing movie moreso than the movie which is actually new.

Feel free to spoil it I don't have high hopes and will probably post spoilers tomorrow after I've seen it. I just want to talk about anything related to urdr hunt and acknowledge that there's a new movie which isn't *technically* new but its not like anybody actually played the gacha anyways.

BTW maybe its just my area but last year I had to drive an hour to get to a theater showing the gquuuuuuux compilation but somehow urdr-hunt+EW is showing in just about every theater over here in central Virginia. Seems kinda weird, even though gcucks was bad it got off to a good start and people were way more hyped for it than urdr hunt...

You answered your own question. It's showing in more theatres because there's a market for the 30 year old Wing movie, not for Urdr Hunt.

I went to go see Endless Waltz so I saw this

It was...really, a disjointed mess. It feels incomprehensible to me as someone who didn't follow that game. I can see what the plot is but everything is rushed from one bullet point to the next in terms of story progress. There is not enough time to develop any connection to any of these characters as we miss out on so much context by only being told 90% of whats going on. There feels like there could be something there for some, but we just don't actually see most of the important stuff.
>>
IBO got done dirty, maybe I'm way off base but there are a lot of parallels I feel with 00... kinda just got sidelined for fan favorite stuff and a next-gen content jump

They did it to themselves honestly.

They had every opportunity to create a spinoff or something but nope, let's make a fucking mobile game.

Not only that, let's set it between the 2 year period of S1 and 2 when there are more interesting periods to explore. Like, I don't know, the calamity war or agnika kaeru? Or maybe follow Ride F Seiei? Even kudelia's attempt to reform mars would be more interesting than wistario.

IBO really didn't seem to stick with people very much beyond memes making fun of it and people liking the mobile suit designs.

OP here
yep, it was as bad as they all said it would be. There's literally nothing you get out of this that you don't get out of watching the clips on youtube. I was impressed by the quality of the animation but scenes abruptly begin and end with no logical flow, it's almost like i'm just watching cutscenes from a bad over-budgeted gacha game without getting any of the context that happens in the actual game.

The narration does a terrible job providing exposition, i don't think they ever really explained what the urdr hunt is or what this "data" they're collecting is supposed to be. Apparently if Wistario wins he gets enough money to buy the entire colony he lives on but I don't think they ever explained why he needs to do that? It's not like there's some evil real estate tycoon threatening to replace it with a big shopping mall; if anything it seems pretty dystopian that he thinks he can just buy everybody's home and rent it to them like he's the blackrock corporation. Supposedly this colony is backwater and underdeveloped but it's actually posher than any other city in all of gundam as well as most cities in real life so I really don't get what his deal is.

There's also no explanation for where hajiroboshi/marchosias came from and it seems like the only reason he's even in the urdr hunt is that he found a golden ticket lying in a sewer.

They actually unironically end by telling us that the real urdr hunt was the friends we made along the way. Then there's a weird cliffhanger where they set up a villain for another story arc, which really makes it seem like there's another movie but given how low-effort this movie was i can't imagine they actually have any intention of doing that unless there's enough unused footage from the app to make a similarly bad sequel.

The new IBO episode was cute but also entirely un-necessary. Despite the advertising hyping up Barbatos Adapt the short actually spent most of its time explaining why Orga started wearing a business suit between seasons 1 and 2. I'm honestly fine with that because I felt like getting torn apart at edminton was already a good enough explanation for why Barbatos needed an overhaul. Anyways, the answer is that Mikazuki didn't want to sent it off to teiwaz to get proper repairs because he's weird but eventually he relented because Barbatos Adapt is only capable of wielding those dinky katanas due to shoulder damage and he really wants the bigass mace back. Orga wears a business suit because he ripped his pants.

I really wish they had used that animation budget to maybe replace all the stuff that got cut from urdr hunt but I suppose they'd need way more than 20 minutes of new animation to unfuck that mess.

EW's quality was oddly bad, it looked like every bad blu-ray "remaster" made over the course of the last 20 years. They didn't even use AI it's just one of those awful denoising filters that smooths out the film grain and rounds out all the linework. I'd rather they didn't do that but there's probably some lame explanation involving them not having any high-quality digital transfers that would be appropriate for a large screen. Unfortunately it's to be expected that at least 99% of all digital remasters will be terrible even though the other 1% proves they don't have to be.

Anyways overall it's not terrible. I'm really bad with girls so it's not like I had anything better to do with my thursday evening than watch a bunch of cutscenes from a video game i never played.

The issue with the Urdr Hunt movie is that the Tekka G OVAs were decently long and interspersed with in game combat and dialog sections alongside the original animations. Instead of trying to do a recut OVA that fills in the gaps they basically just recycled the footage and put in a spliced up epilogue as the framing device. But with Tekka G dead, Urdr Hunt has no chance of a proper conclusion even if they literally just have one more point in the titular hunt to go to. Would've made more sense to put up the OVA online for free and make the movie what would've been the finale instead.

Does banrise know about this?

IBO literally had one of the longest continuous gunpla runs in gundam history. Maybe the longest. They're still releasing shit. The Lupus just came out and the HG Adapt is coming soon. Not to mention the MRD shit. I'm sure the MG Lupus Rex is coming eventually too.

Is the Gundam Wing special just the animated stills with cloaks they released a while back?

just got back from the theatre, this one was a choppe- up mess, they tried to glue it back together with narration but most of the fights get skipped and characters are on screen with little to no intro set-up
Endless Waltz was as good as ever on a big screen.

Not sure if this is what you're talking about but between IBO and EW they showed the 30th anniversary trailer from a few months ago and a weird interview with two guys who were in charge of the English dub or whatever 20 years ago. Nothing interesting other than apparently the voice actors had extreme difficulty learning to pronounce "zechs".

BTW IBO also had a cute out-of- universe skit where the tekkadan kids visit a movie theater and eat popcorn for the first time. It's kind of like this weird low budget things trigger posts on YouTube in that there is very little actual animation and the story is primarily conveyed through what the characters are saying. After that was a monologue from wistario's VA where she didn't say anything that was actualy memorable but she did specifically address it to the US audience so it must not have been in the Japanese release.

>Urdr Hunt exists and I'm tired of pretending it doesn't
If only it was a real game you could play on a real hardware, like a personal pc computer or something instead of this elusive thing I only read about on the internet. The only acceptable, even if not definitive, proof of its existence I found were fandom wiki pages of the mobile suits that appear in this mysterious piece of media and they're not even in GB4, unlike the Gundams from GQUACK and that ugly Zeon centric cg series that didn't even use classic sound effects, meaning that they might as well not exist at all. Shame, because like with most IBO stuff, I like the designs.

Tfw retards still call the game Urdr Hunt when that wasn’t what the game was called

SD Gundam doing side stories for Eternal gave it the most it's gotten in a long time. The fan demand for a Calamity War show was enough for that but they didn't.
