-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

I've been complaining about this over on /toy/ for a few days now, but holy fuck clothing for 1/12 girlpla is goddamned expensive, even for basic underwear. And all this because I'm planning to buy the Cyclone Hopper, but she doesn't come with panties and I don't want her to be flashing everyone when I put her into kicking poses with her miniskirt. I feel like a goddamned goon just browsing the various vendors looking for a way to not take it up the ass on shipping costs.

A few threads ago an anon linked me an article that said its a myth that lacquer topcoat will reactivate/eat through acrylic paint, is this true? Everyone I've spoken to has told me NOT to spray tamiya flat clear over my hand painted builds but if it's fine I'll be really happy
>>
>>23711764
It's fine if you give time for the acrylic layer to cure and spray the lacquer on with light coats.

Started snapping together a Quacks. Not sure what I'm gonna do in terms of painting or if I even want to kitbash anything onto it.
>>
>>23711764
As far as I'm aware, your acrylic needs to be CURED, not just dry. So let it sit somewhere to offgas for two weeks minimum, so the chemical process can properly complete. Then apply very light coats of topcoat.
But all this could depend on the brand of acrylics, always test out new paint combos on some scrap or plastic spoons.
>>
>>23711773
Thanks dude. I assume a week should be good, right? How long between coats of topcat?
>>
>>23711777
What brand of acrylic paints?
>>
>>23711780
Vallejo game color
>>
>>23711785
A week is more than fine assuming ideal conditions. You can test it on spoons like the other guy said if you want to be sure. Just make sure each topcoat layer is dry before adding more.
>>
>>23711791
Testing on spoons is a great idea. Thank you both :) one more thing: It's too cold to topcoat my stuff outside, but it's fine if I take them from where it's warm then bring them indoors immediately after application, yeah?
>>
>>23711800
I've never had to do it myself, but I've seen others say it's worked for them so it should be fine.

They're basically really good Gundam HGs. They both come with a bust you can display alongside the flight forms too since they're partsformers, which I think is kinda nice. Oftentimes you're left with some spare bits you can't really do anything with but here you've got a whole assembly that looks neat on its own.

>>
>>23712041
>>23712043
Could they manufacture a quality MG kit of the thing? Hell yes.
Could they make a great enough profit in the process to justify it? That's the more dubious question.

>>23712065
It's from the movie/OVA, yes. But it's in 1/144, whereas the vast majority of the kits are in 1/100
>>
>>23712095
Isn't it in 1/100? They're using the old Serpent 1/100 mold, right?
>>
>>23712041
It'd be the size of a PG, at a bare minimum. Considering all teh pointy bits it'd be even bigger. So you'd be looking at $300 for a MG, which we know would flop just like the Deepstriker.
>>
>>23712097
Everything I've read says it's in 1/144 like the old fighting action 1/144 HG kits.

>>23712063
I have no faith that Bandai could make a fully transforming ZZ at 1/144 without it becoming a worse hand grenade than the Zeta. Hell, I have no faith that anybody could do it without a metal frame.
>>
>>23712094
Huh, you're right, it doesn't actually look that egregious, alright I'll recommend he give the Ver Ka a fair shake as well, thank you.
>no idea what sort of Sazabis or Nu Gundams I'd eventually get myself
>>
>>23712095
>That's the more dubious question
Bandai has released more ridiculous things.
>>
>>23712100
ZZ's transformation is much simpler and easier to recreate than Zeta's, it's not even a contest. Zeta absolutely demolishes its core structural integrity in its waist and torso. ZZ's chest lifts and its arms and legs spin rotating blocks inside them and that's about it. It's a remarkably simple transformation. Zeta's waist folds in while the hips completely split apart and the chest also folds up while the shoulder joints swing 90 degrees. Every element attached to the torso ends up on a hinge to move somewhere else. Zeta is among the most complex transformations of the franchise, especially when you don't factor in scale.
>>
>>23712098
> It'd be the size of a PG, at a bare minimum.
That didn't stop the MG Perfect Zeong or HG Neo Zeong. But Unicorn was a global success and 0079 is 0079, which is why they got away with it. Hathaway, there's far less of a chance of that, the movies would need to be at least as popular as Unicorn, which we all know isn't going to happen.

Best case, a Chinese upscale of the HG, or an Osiris Aerial Dominator style release in a decade that costs as much as the PGU Nu.
>>
>>23712100
>I have no faith that Bandai could make a fully transforming ZZ at 1/144 without it becoming a worse hand grenade than the Zeta. Hell, I have no faith that anybody could do it without a metal frame.
I wouldn't even mind partsforming for the ZZ if it was at least a fun or clever transformation. The HG for the Zeta does not feel fun to transform, it's just a big silly adapter you throw everything onto, and the red bits for the wings will star to scratch unless you shelled out extra for p-bandai or p-aint.

NTA but I'm working with Bandai decals on this kit (not the kit's decals, general purpose UC ones sold separately) and it takes them a shockingly long time to detach. With G-Rework sheets I can just dip them in the water, set them where they need to go, and wait a few moments and they'll be ready to go. With these I have to leave them soaking for like half a minute before they'll even budge. Also the third-party ones generally only required a light touch with a q-tip but with the Bandai ones I notice I have to give them several good rolls before they lay flat.
It's not some nightmare that has me swearing off Bandai decals forever but the difference is noticeable and surprising.

First custom. Trying to put Gouf legs on a Zudah torso, basically. First tried to just snip off the ball joint that the Zudah has and glue on some posts made of sprue to fit to Gouf legs, but that really didn't work. Snapped off immediately. New attempt, drilling out the mount point, putting a bit of sprue through the hole, and using Tamiya glue to melt it into place. Also a bit of putty in one of the internal holes.

Ignore the nubs and shit, I'm planning to sand right before I prime/paint and I wanted to figure out what parts I wanted to use.
>>
Trying to handpaint details is fucking suffering, it's like I'm smearing blobs around on the surface and if I go any thinner it runs like water and pools on whatever I touch
How do the 40k guys do this
>>
>>23712671
something that made me improve a lot is holding your shit with one hand, painting with the other, having both your wrists locked against the other and your elbows set on the table
beside that it's just working out your paint consistency and using a precision brush

>paint consistency
That's the problem, I thinned it just a little bit and it turned into water, and if I try using it straight from the bottle it goops and pools and just looks like shit
I've tried three different brushes and can't get anything resembling smoothness with any of them, even unthinned paint pulls to the edges from gravity and won't set on the raised edge
>>
>>23712685
You can try sanding the surface with 800-1000 grit to help it grip, or try thinning the paint with something else like retarder or flow improver

Progress on the Daban Strike with the diecast inner frame.

I'm actually impressed so far, as the parts fit almost perfectly and all the pieces come prepainted, either in a pearl finish (the red, blue and yellow) or in a very neat flat finish ( for the 2 shades of gray you get for the armor instead of the boring white you would see in the MG) and two different shades of metallic chrome for the inner frame.

Weirdly, the diecast inner frame set forgot entirely about the shoulders. No metal parts whatsoever for that section, which is kinda weird since they are also semiexposed and there is even the anchor thing there that holds in position the different Strike packs.

The head is divided in waaaay more parts than the MG counterpart and some are fucking tiny, so you have to be careful. One difference with the actual Metal Build figure so far is that the clear part for the main camera in the head comes molded in a dark clear green, instead of clear light blue.

My main gripe so far are the yellow antennas. They have very small hooks that are supposed to grip the white V fin, but they are so small they barely do it, so the are prone to fall off.

The only thing I don't like about the MB interpretation of the Strike is the thurster in the back. In the lineart it is fully integrated into the body, here, they elongated it so it kinda hangs there and its main purpose is to hide the hardpoint to connect the Strike packs

With everything we've heard about how much of a disappointment it is, do you really think that adding even more weight to the thing would be a good idea? Besides which, PG kits are always the least likely to get attachments or expansions, to this day we still don't have a Perfect Gundam, or the Hyper Mega Launcher for the Zeta, or Snow White and/or Drei Zwerg for the Wing Zero Custom, or G-Defenser for the Mk-II, or XN Raiser for the 00 Raiser, or Avalanche(') for the Exia. Hell, the PGU RX-78-2 never even got a bazooka, third-party Chinese aftermarket companies had to give that to us.

If it's baked into your country's regulations that lacquer paints are not allowed, you could try using enamels instead. enamel on top of lacquer is frequently used for how EASY it is to clean off without touching the base coat. no need to paint accurately, you just wipe off the edges of your mess with a qtip and some lighter fluid.

Seconding the ps 289. Good price, Japanese made in the same factory as Iwata, easy to clean, have had no problems with it as an amateur. It's the best value non-CN-made brush you can get. The only niggle is the MAC valve near the front which is totally unneeded if you have a regulator on your compressor to control PSI and which makes some airbrush holders not fit.
It's NOT exactly the same as the iwata eclipse line though. For one thing it has a screw on nozzle instead of the eclipse series' compression-fit one.

You don't need to prime if you're using lacquers (eg mr.hobby Cellulose). They naturally stick to the plastic, letting you skip this step.
Just get the paints that most closely resemble what you need, pour it into airbrush with some levelling thinner, mix well and spray away.

>>
>>23715292
you dont *need* primer for lacquer but acrylic scratches off easily without it and if you spray enamel directly onto bare plastic you are a fucking retard and deserve everything that happens to you
>>
>>23715295
Aren’t most hobby lacquers like Mr color and Gaia actually solvent based acrylics? So they would still need primer right?
>>
>>23715299
the solvent theyre suspended in is strong enough to partially melt the surface of the plastic so in a way it doesnt need primer but it would be a hell of a lot more durable if you did use it
>>
>>23715299
Mr.color has pretty good surface adhesion. You should still use primer because it works even better if you do.
>>
>>23715303
Why are paint types so confusing? People say “lacquers” like Mr color and gaia are actually acrylic and “acrylics” like Mr hobby aqueous are actually lacquer.
>>
>>23715307
I hate to tell you that aqueous is also acrylic.
>>
>>23715307
mr. color and gaia ARE acrylic + lacquer mixed. hope this helps
>>
>>23715309
Acrylic in like the colloquial sense or the literal sense? Anons have said that aqueous actually has solvents so it can be considered “lacquer” but that it is just a less intense solvent so it smells less bad. But then if we consider that hobby lacquers are actually just solvent based acrylic, then it is acrylic.
>>
>>23715315
It's an alcohol based acrylic. All paints are based on a solvent. Water is a solvent.
>>
>>23713860
Well it's the first kit I'm taking seriously.
>>
>>23715316
So Mr color, gaia, Mr hobby aqueous, and water based acrylics are all solvent based acrylics.
>>
>>23715313
Wtf this means?
>>
>>23715319
Technically, yes. They just use different solvents and sometimes swapping the solvent will destroy the paint. They're all based on some sort of acrylic resin.
>>
>>23715321
acrylic pigment suspended in lacquer solvent. if it was lacquer pigment (like factory or car paint) you would actually need to wear a full protective suit and not just a little mask
>>
>>23715325

>>23715327

>>23715345
It's suspended in acrylic resin.
>>
>>23715354
NTA. The pigments and binder (resin) are acrylic but the carrier solvents are strong lacquer-type organic solvents like toulene or xylene.
>>
>>23715357
But lacquer is the paint, not the thinner. It's an acrylic paint which has a strong, but common for paint, solvent. It's almost like it's an acrylic paint which was engineered to use common paint thinner.
>>
>>23715262
You still prime for lacquers if you are changing colors. You want a common starting point for the color.
>>
>>23715362
It’s funny because it’s actually the opposite but no one has pointed it out yet. It’s actually a lacquer paint whose binder happens to be an acrylic resin. Or just an acrylic lacquer. It’s more than just what thinner you can use because the solvents actually dominate the behavior of the paint system. Paints that use different solvents will differ based on solvent strength, curing mechanism, evaporation rate, film formation behavior, and resolubility after drying. The binder doesn’t mean shit.
>>
People should refer to paint based on the solvent (lacuqer/alcohol/water/mineral spirits) instead of the pigment type
>>
What sort of top coats should I avoid if using Mr hobby aqueous paints?
>>
>>23715392
None, it's strong enough to take lacquers as long as you don't soak it.
>>
>>23715384
The binder is what makes it acrylic paint. It is acrylic paint.
In the purest definition, lacquer is a paint which dries purely by the solvent evaporating off and depositing a solid binder. Mr.color does not do that. It has an actual cure time instead of just drying. It has a fluid binder which cures into a solid form.
>>
>>23715394
You are actually wrong though.
>Mr.color does not do that. It has an actual cure time instead of just drying
Mr color doesn’t actually cure, that’s a common misconception. There’s no crosslinking reaction, no hardner, and no irreversible chemical change. What Mr color actually does is that solvent evaporation process you described as behavior of lacquer paint. You can prove this easily if you actually painted. Mr color can be resoftened or redissolved even days later with thinner. It can be remelted into itself. It behaves exactly as lacquers do when recoated. True curing paint like 2k urethane or actual enamels don’t do any of this because they change chemically and permanently when they cure.
>It has a fluid binder which cures into a solid form.
This isn’t true. The acrylic resin is already a solid polymer that’s dissolved in the solvent. If it were liquid it would not be resoluble
>>
>>23715405
I've re-melted lacquer a few months after application when I learned you can remove matt clear coat from clear pieces with isopropyl and a q tip.
>>
>>23715406
That's not because it's lacquer. It's because acrylic is soluble by alcohol.
>>

"Solvent-based acrylic" is the technical term for lacquers, as opposed to "water-based acrylic" for acrylics. This does not mean lacquers and acrylics are interchangeable.

Haha, thanks anon, I'm really happy with how it's turning out. I prototyped a shield booster a while ago but I haven't iterated much on it since. I like this idea though, just changing out the missiles for thrusters, though I'll probably use the F91 spec shield. Maybe some propellant tanks in the empty space on the underside. The Jegan shield (like lots of Gundam shields personally) looks way cooler upside down so I'm really fond of finding a way to include this. It's what I imagined it originally used before getting modified with that beam shield later.

What exactly can they even do for a new kit? Anything that will appear in the second movie already has a kit, unless you're hoping for something impossible like MG Xi. I expect the final Hathaway movie in 20XX to be when they'll make new kits for, probably the Argos unit for Odysseus, maybe even the copium of Xi getting a new look cause people hated the face design of the "light novel accurate" Xi

>>

Either paint with clear paint or recast it in clear, colored resin.

>>

The Ikaruga from Kotobukiya.
I've done water slides in the past but nothing too complicated. I guess people suggest decal softener and weird cuts with the decal sheet. I'd hate to tear the water slides with the kit so figured I'd get some practice in. There's other stuff with the kit I'm kinda concerned with but that's just something I gotta take slow and steady.
>>
>>23716497
Softener is really useful for helping waterslides bend around curves which is great if you're, say, wrapping one around a leg
Setter I have no fucking idea if it actually matters, I imagine it helps with adhesion but I've never had issues with that anyway because I topcoat it after and I haven't seen any difference between my setter stuff and my water-only stuff
>>
>>23716499
Yeah, the big pretty decals on the side are curved and I've never used softener so thats what I wanted to get a feel for. That and it's just been ages since I've used water slides so I just want to warm up some before diving in on the Ikaruga.

>is the Gunpla thread the right place to ask about Gunpla?
I mean, yeah, you're in exactly the right place.

In any case, Gundam Base specializes in exclusives, but they should also have regular retail stuff. I don't know what kinds of exclusives the one in Chicago carries, and how their prices are in the midst of inflation, price hikes and tariffs, but it's probably still going to be cheaper than buying from the online store.

If you want to get something more mundane to cut your teeth on, find a Hobby Lobby and go to their models section, right now should be their 40% off boxed kits week so you should be able to snag something for pretty cheap (don't know if they're open on MLK). Hobby Lobby is still the cheapest way to get Gunpla in the US, even with price hikes and the like. Stuff that you find at the Gundam Base will be more special by comparison, so honestly that might be something you want to build more carefully and not something you'd want to try as a first-timer. That being said, your nephew will definitely enjoy himself no matter what his building skill level.

>>
>>23717059
Not sure as I haven't made it to the Chicago store. I buy most kits online, outside of some minor browsing at Hobby Lobby on sale week, or the local model store I buy stuff at to keep it in business. HL is always a dice roll on their stock as they don't list the Gundam stock online as it's basically randomly distributed to locations when they have space.
As for the age thing, MGs are a full internal frame (usually) and have significantly more pieces and have some smaller pieces despite being a larger scale. Keep that in mind when picking as that would determine how long it will end up taking. Experienced builders can snap an average HG in 2-3 hours (with cleaning nubs and panel lining) while doing a similar job on an MG would be like 4-8 (varies a bit more as they often have more accessories).

>>
>>23717249
How should I go about blending it?
>>
>>23717250
Gentle strokes with a wet Q tip. The goal is to just rub off a little bit at a time.
>>
>>23717252
What do you wet it with?
>>
>>23717275
Water. It's just to act as lubricant since Q tips are actually way more abrasive than you want.

>Browsing models in the categories I haven't paid much attention to

Fug. Anyone have a few Megami Device girls? Can you swap the weapons to either side or are they all pretty much build just the one way?
>>
>>23717353
All the hands they come with come in pairs
>>
>>23717353
What, are you a Southpaw or something? Why does it have to be left handed?

i'm not trying to be a jerk. Genuinely curious.
>>
it would have been more accurate to call him the Salmon Comet when you think about it
>>
>>23717355
Maybe I can do it then. The lance attaches to a backpack. So I think you'd have to build the lance different to use it. Shit. Maybe I'll just go for it anyway. Big lance is the best part anyway.

>>23717360
Naw, I'm not a witch. I just like lefty lances because Hunters are all left handed and I always thought it was interesting. There is just something about left handed big weapons that stand out and seem more.. whatever. Striking, I guess.
>>
>>23717352
What did you like about it?
>>
>>23717314
Because it looks nice.
Because most people snap build.
Because if you're cutting with a single blade nipper the nubs aren't that noticeable unless you're scrutinizing up close.

I've bought a couple of special coating/ titanium finish, they have a certain shine/ shading to it that I don't quite know how to replicate with the usual painting/ topcoat. Most of the nubs are also undergated.

One half looks mostly smooth even if the other one is still kind shitty mess. I still feel like this is awful but it shouldn't be as bad from a distance and I don't think I can do any better.

It's better to wait for it to dry before cleaning the smears/excess off, right? Made the mistake of putting a tiny dab of thinner on my brush and everything I touched ran like water until I dried it on a napkin.

>The most random out of nowhere leak is confirmed to be true
I am feeling vindicated that more and more of the entries in the leak has been accurate and confirmed. This means there's a good chance we will actually get a MG MP Nu Gundam.
>>
>>23717536
the guess was Lupus Rex, but the actual release was the regular Lupus, so it kinda counts.

What would be the MGEX Red Frame's "extreme point" gimmick?
>>
>>23717523
Knowing that the new MG Red Frame is not the actual Red Frame but a MP version similar to the Nu MP Type, a MGEX Red Frame is actually a lot more believable now. Especially with the RG Ingram being confirmed.
>>
>>23717523
HG Union Flag is all but confirmed due to the way they named the runners for the HG GN Flag.
And it wouldn't make much sense to revive the Flags but not the S1 Gundams, so they will most likely happen too.

Nu MP Type is part of the leaks so at least one slot is going to UC. I just hope it comes with both the Incoms and the Fin Funnels since the backpack remains unchanged between the two for the most part and that it is a brand new mold and designed by the guy who did the RG so that later down the line we get a new MG Nu which could lead to the Full Armor Nu Gundam (which is different from the HWS Nu)
