-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

Zak's gripe with gaykotsu is that gaykotsu has A LOT of reach and spreads a bad message towards casuals, sure, a lot of people won't paint and are snapfags but to outright use your large platform to go "don't get this kit, it sucks cause I'm a snapshitter" is what made the Box smashing basher want to "attack" him with this video.

There is this mentality that model kits can't be bad because you can just spend a week fixing what the multi billion dollar corporation failed to make good. It's kind of like the idiotic mentality of Bethesda delivering a dog shit product but it's okay because modders will just fix everything. Not that I want to be on the same side with the nail painting faggot; though an outdated model kit isn't necessarily bad. I haven't built this thing (never will) so I cannot comment on it specifically, only what I have built myself and I have had plenty of bad building experiences.

New to the hobby. I want to participate in the group build, should I build a kit I care about less first as practice?
>>
>>23721687
The overwhelmingly vast majority of gunpla has 90 degree arm and leg rotation and that's really more than enough to pose in most poses you ever saw them doing. I don't think I fully agree that there's literally no such thing as a bad kit but I mostly agree with the spirit of it and definitely agree when you want to talk about pretty much anything from the HGUC line or generally gunpla of the past 30 years. The average quality is high enough that to call anything bad is fundamentally not realizing how bad things can get. Oh no, the Tristan has straight peg shoulders bad arm articulation. Truly it's the end of the world and not still a decent mold of the design that can still look great on a shelf doing plenty of different poses with just a minor amount of touchup work if you just work with it.
>>
>>23721691
Opinions can be wrong.
>>
>>23721693
Build things you like. It's more fun.
>>
>>23721693
Sounds logical, yeah.
>>
>>23721693
If you're new to Gunpla, probably best to get more familiar with it before participating in a group build that will most likely involve kitbashing, scratchbuilding, painting, and numerous other advanced techniques.
>>
>>23721693
If the kit you care about is particularly rare or expensive maybe you want to save it but I agree with the other anon that working on what you like is the way to go.
>>
>>23721697
his own opinion is isolated to just himself, he's not claiming "THERE'S NO BAD KITS! YOU'RE WRONG TO THINK BAD KITS EXIST! BUY THIS NOT-BAD KIT!" unlike gaykotsu telling up front that a kit is bad cause he personally doesn't like it and that you shouldn't get it. Has gaykotsu ever said it was his own opinion?

You don't really need to do all that though to enter. Or, rather, it's a little disingenuous to suggest he has to jump into the deep end and get so complex with it. An Ace Custom for this build can be as simple as painting a stripe or carrying a different gun and making up some lore.
Maybe it won't get a lot of votes but who cares? The point's to have fun and build something so if it sounds like fun, do it.

It is quite the investment to start modeling these things for real
Ive been doing lots of research on materials, airbrushes paints etc etc that will be required to start making sick airbrushed kits with high detail and man.. it looks very expensive and time consuming, I don't know how deep I truly want to get into the hobby. How was your transition from snap builds to full on airbrushed kits? Am I overthinking this?
I'm decently satisfied with panel lining, light weathering details, decals and hitting my kits with a matte top coat but I also envy shit like this and wish I had the money/talent to do so

If it's something like those ancient unpainted zanscare kits or some primitive MG, or retrofitting some old niche HG, then I could understand. But the fucking unicorns? The 20 billion kit unicorns? The already-has-better-kits-at-every-scale unicorns? Why fucking bother?

Gimme a consult guys: Which version of the decals looks better, the original (left), or Delpi's custom version (right)?

They both cost the same, Delpi's are all white and looks like it matches the original style pretty okay, but the red on the official decals look like they work well in complementing the red parts on the MS (I have to admit though, I might accidentally paint it in a slightly different shade of red, which could result in the red decals not matching the red on the MS anymore). The Delpi version also looks less obnoxious, but I'm planning on doing the other two druggies in the official decals (though only because they don't have custom versions), and having one of them not in official decals might feel weird.

Am I over-thinking this? I'm currently leaning towards the Delpi custom version, but I'm open to being persuaded otherwise.

Boy, I sure hope I didn't fuck this one up too badly.
The way the joint snapped left the ball too deep into the socket so there was no way to get it out without making an incision on the side first.

Even with that opening, the socket slips in other ball joints just fine. Just tested it out with the other shoulder. Should I try to fill it in with putty or something? Or is it fine to leave it this way and fixing the opening is just going for an A+ extra credit.

not bad I'd say. Daban really achieved an almost perfect copy of the MB mold. The only difference seems to be the head, as the faceplat has some rounder proportions that make it seem a bit off, but that aside, this looks really good out of the box

however, the addition of the diecast inner frame isa plus I really suggest if you ever want to build this thing, the extra weight provides much more stability and it sure as hell is necessary if you want to attach the various striker packs

Forgot how quickly PGs come along as I started this guy around 2 hours ago. Lots of ABS so far, so it's been annoying cleaning the parts, but it's inner frame in the legs so it probably needs the strength and won't show much.
Bandai's been a bit inconsistent on the plated parts. The gold circles were undergated, but then the chrome pistons and the one gold piece on the waist has nubs on the two sides that are actually visible for some reason.
Really liking the splitable runners that are devoted to one sub assembly, makes you really feel like you are making progress.
Debating if I should top coat the inner frame on this guy, since there are so many hatch opening/Psychoframe activation gimmicks.

If you're using just water-based acrylics, disposable nitrile gloves and particle filtering mask to avoid rainbow boogers is more than sufficient.
If it's some toxic solvent-based shit like lacquers or enamels or thinners you'll need proper respirator with A1 filter and P3 prefilter. Not sure about gloves, different materials interact with different solvents differently.

I'm finally finished the Axis Kshatriya. This was a really fun build. This thing is very solid, the gimmicks and articulating joints all move freely but nothing flops. There are several layers of frame and armor, but I ran into a problem due to its weight. The toothed adjustable joint under the mount couldn't handle the weight resulting in it doing a hard faceplant. Luckily it was still on my worktable, not a shelf, so I only had to fix a few things. I beefed up the mount then made is into an adjustable mount with a removable metal pin to lock everything in place.

And done with the frame. Was thinking as I was doing this and I think I'm going to matte coat it at this point, then do all the metal overlay parts and leave them plain, then eventually matte the armor. Should give a little variance to the finnish. Will probably need to mask off some of the chrome bits that are already on the frame.
Been a very fun build so far. Like how you get to clear runners quickly and they are laid out nice enough that you can almost just cut as you want without looking at the instructions.

It's fine. The airbrush especially is fine, like you can just get a proper compressor and the airbrush will serve.
But I recommend a NeoEco instead, specifically the one with this alternate quick-switch easy-clean nozzle design
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006923244338.html
so you won't retardfinger the treads of a conventional airbrush nozzle screw (like I have many times)
>>
>>23723672
>>23723662
compressor-wise, if you have to have one NOW and need it cheap, buy whatever, but try to get a proper one with an air tank eventually

>>23723676
I just want to start learning and that one is around $20. There are also hobbymio alternatives.
>>
>>23723683
Yeah, but that thing won't really teach you much of anything. I've gone through your exact process, I HAVE THAT BATTERY-POWERED COMPRESSOR. That cheap kit is for blasting paint on walls and cakes and shit, at best for priming maybe.

>>
>>23723695
>>23723662
I will elaborate on my previous post. Get a real compressor. Ignore the retard who will inevitably shill the "washless" airbrush. He doesn't paint and never will. He just likes the idea of being too lazy to spend 10 seconds cleaning between colors.
Master airbrush g233 is a pretty good cheap one and their cheap compressor is pretty good too. It's also compatible with pretty much any amazon mystery meat nozzle or needle. It's handy.

>>23723672
How does this thing actually paint though? Does it have that issue conventional airbrushes have where shmutz gets between the nozzle and the cap and makes it spray funny? I was thinking about getting a second brush since my compressor has two outlets.

>Stare at white stress marks on the dark plastic

Hm.
Okay so for dark parts do I want to leave a substantial nub and file it completely down to avoid stress marks on dark parts? I figure I'll never get rid of the swirls without painting but these white specks are bugging me more than I'd like to admit. Do I just need to get over it until I get the balls to paint? Will cutting further away from the part and filing it down help?
>>
>>23723736
>>23723706
I don't know man, aliexpress even ships to FUCKING ZIMBABWE, but not mine
and sadly no one sells NeoEco in my country's e-commerce, so I guess I'll have to settle with hobbymio for beginner airbrush. I'll try painting like 2-3 gunpla and see if I actually like painting or not.

>>23723715
I just googled what a compressor is and... eh it feels too much commitment... and expensive.
>>
>>23723738
If I want to avoid a stress mark I leave about 1mm of plastic and then file that down very gently.
Or you could bite the bullet and paint. At some point painting will be easier.

>>23723740
It's a thing you plug in to a wall and then plug your air hose to. It's a retard proof system. Don't get one of those pieces of shit with a battery. It's the exact same thing but worse in every way.

Where do you guys buy kits? I went to the gundam base store in chicago, but they mostly carry exclusive versions (transparent plastic shells are back in style) or new/promoted stuff (tons of gundam wing and gqux). May have taken 4 1/2 hours to heat the Garage to 55F, but I think it was worth it. I think I'm going to be pretty happy with the matte / Shiny / matte layering. The chrome on the hands is still a shiny even with some matte on it, but slightly toned down to where I don't dislike it as much now.
Also, using the Kaleido clear was really nice due to not needing to vent outside, but I ended up having to use Tamiya cleaner to get it out of the airbrush as iso made it gummy up. Flushed a decent amount through so I hope there isn't building upside. The needle going back in felt normal after it was out for a good 10 min (this starts being noticably dry about then).
Liger just got blasted as is, as I forgot about him until I was in the middle of cleaning up. I think I got good enough coverage since I'm not really going to repose him much.
>>
>>23723110
keep in mind the scale of the kit you are weathering, and you should be able to come up with some explanation for how that weathering occurred
there's many different ways to do it so just look up some random guides and try out whatever looks like fun while remembering what i started this post with and you shouldn't end up with what looks like a dirty thrashed toy
>>
>>23723715
I can't speak on whether it suffers the issue to a greater or lesser extent because I haven't really experienced it often enough to have more than anecdotal experience, and in those cases it was my fault due to fucking up the thinning.

It is, however, an order of magnitude easier to clean. The pipe cleaner brushes are your best friend.

Also, was asked to post some stuff on that car kit I'm painting with my dad. Got all of the pieces he told me he wanted matte done also. On the bottom "tray", I got a little creative and lightly sanded back to the primer on the high spots. Kinda like reverse panel lining. Really brought out the detail.
Just need to learn if/how I can buff Mr Metal Color GX and clear coat the red parts of the body/engine and then I can get him back over for final assembly.
