-=READ THE GUIDES=-

Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Be more specific, and try to provide clear images if you can.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data when images are uploaded, including the orientation tag if it's from your phone. To fix it save out your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.
One easy to use app that works well on Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobilephotoresizer

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

Send your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com with at least 5 photos of your finished build along with any WIP photos and a description of your entry.

totally Bandai's fault, they overengineered the fin funnels and put too many parts, making it too heavy, now it needs a support.

The difference between PGU Nu and the HGUC Unicorn is that the Unicorn was made during a time where engineering innovations aren't that much of a focus. PGU Nu was made during the time where engineering is supposed to be matured enough that Bandai is using it as a marketing point. there's stronger backlash with the Nu because there's expectations to it, being the pinnacle of gunpla.

Some people buy their shit off of Mofiho, but you can basically get the exact same shit off of Ali Express. Ali regularly has sales where buying above a certain threshold gets you small discounts (e.g. spend $49 on stuff before shipping, get a $9 discount on your purchase). Also, there's plenty of conditions for getting free shipping.

When buying stuff, just look for a bit of text under the price that says that import charges are included.

It's a 1/60 sized plastic model kit, and the Nu Gundam itself already weighs 900 grams without the weapons or Fin Funnels. The video makes it very clear that you're supposed to use the stand to display it with the back-mounted Fin Funnels, since otherwise you're probably going to end up with long-term structural damage.

To be fair, you can paint those. The real elephant in the room is the weak structure of the model that the Chang reviewer stated. This thing will shit itself in a week.
>>
>>23725175
It's dumb that you have to use the stand just to hold up the Fin Funnels in order to keep it balanced. Unless the stand itself is movable and can hold the Fin Funnel's in any position while it's mounted on the back then this just means it becomes a pseudo-statue with the Fin Funnels mounted on.
>>
>>23725234
That's not flop retard. That's play. It's impossible to make a perfectly rigid structure.
>>
>>23725288
They should've used a rachet or just a simple pin to lock the waist. The problem is that a smooth joint will never be able to hold this while also having the reasonable holding power for people to move by hand without turning the entire thing into a giant lever and snapping something.

Anon, if the Fin Funnels are in storage mode on the back of the Gundam, then it's either going to be in a standing pose, or a cruising through space pose. In either case it's a very static pose which restricts the ways in which you can pose it due to the Fin Funnels blocking half the motion range of the left arm. If you're going to put it into more dynamic poses, then the Fin Funnels will come off anyway and be placed individually around the Gundam in firing mode.

Of all the engineering sacrifices made to design this thing, requiring a stand to hold up those Fin Funnels seems like it would be the least damaging ones to make. If they put too many complicated mechanisms in the waist to lock it just to allow it to stand up with the things on its back without support as suggested by >>23725321, then it would increase the odds of someone accidentally leaving a locking part in place, trying to pose it, and breaking the part.

>>23725603
You have to thin it to begin with at least 1:1 with thinner first, so you have double the volume really. As for hope much you can paint, it depends. White goes pretty quick on say a Gundam as it usually doesn't have be best coverage ability and there is a lot of surface area that is white. While a dark color lasts longer as it usually blocks out the color below more.
>>
>>23725603
thin it 1/1.5 or so with levelling thinner to give you like 25ml of paint and go from there

>>
>>23725669
No, do you want jagged lines? I would stick to a Wave set scriber or Dspiae set. Those are decent.
>>
>>23725669
Don't buy the cheap sets, they don't have the scribe heads in the proper thickness. Buyer reviews also talk about how they tend to be pre-rusted.

If you're going to get into scribing, you need heads in 0.1mm, 0.15mm and 0.2mm thickness, since those are what's used for HG, RG and MG kits. More as needed, but you don't need scribe heads in 1mm thickness or larger.
>>
>>23725669
Scribing was invented by katoki who has stock in big scribe. Shit is retarded, and not needed at all with gunpla kits. That technique was created back when shitty amt and revel aircraft kits lacked any detail at all. It's a grift.
>>

As other anons already said, the only real distinguishing factor on Ver. Ka kits is that they come with a big waterslide sheet that's optional and which most smart people replace with good quality ones made by Koreans. Yes, Katoki has his own style of proportions and such, but a bunch of his kits are later sold as regular kits. For instance, every Unicorn kit is based on the original Ver. Ka but with fixes to the shitty knees (the Unicorn OVA also fixes the waist and vulcans), the Crossbone Full Cloth is basically the original Crossbone but with a shitload more accessories and a few modified body parts, Wing EW is just Wing Ver. Ka molded in proper parade colors and with a complimentary action base adapter thrown in, and so on. Really, they're not so much different from regular MG kits except with name brand tacked on.

>>23725742
They generally don't make 1/100 kits for mobile armors. A Packs has a HG kit but no MG.

>Was the anime any good?
That's probably the most infamous part of the show:
Most people who watched it subbed thought that it was pretty bad. However, it turned out that the widely available ones are actually absolutely dogshit, bordering on guess-subs most of the time. (hell, the whole release by the group was horrendous and even cut the entire fucking ending of the show and replaced it with the standard ED)
The anon who pointed it out ended up re-subbing the first 8-9 episodes and it turned out to be surprisingly good. However (again), the show is basically split into two parts and Ordian itself doesn't even really appear until like over halfway through the show. While the first half is mostly a war drama, the second turns into Evangelion with all the mumbo jumbo you'd expect and THAT part is unfortunately still unsubbed - you can probably already imagine just how wrong the subs in that part must be.
Some guy who ran a cel-collecting page watched the whole thing raw and actually considered it to be one of the better Eva-clones so make what you will out of that.
>>
>>23725806
Get a glass file. Cut the part off with about 1mm of runner left, then gently file off the nub. There will still be a stress mark sometimes but it's a lot smaller.

The usual advice is to cut piece from the runner with a bit of the gate still left on it, then remove the rest using single bladed nippers and/or hobby knife. Then clean it up with sandpaper gradually increasing grit. You may still end up with some stress marks but it is what it is. As long as you don't have any protruding nubs you did you job well enough.

Weird that they included all the gimmicks but skipped out on the transformation. It made the model pretty solid though it seems.

Really glad it comes with two TR-6 beam saber handles. The Barzam II kit is not a cheap source for those.

Aside from the giant head the old MG does look more like the anime/original line art. EG is ok but lacks a lot of detail. If you could combine the old MG with the EG's head scale it would be excellent. The Ka version, looks like a completely different suit (just like every ka version, they're just reimagining of suits in his style).

How do I avoid accidentally sanding out tiny details when sanding a piece before applying primer?
>>
>>23726065
Carefully. Really there's no big trick. Use low-grit (high number) sandpaper and a soft touch.
>>
>>23726127
It's hard for me to go straight to low grit, I never know if I'm doing it right unless if have the marks left behind by prior higher grit papers as reference. How do I sand only with low grit and know it's ready for primer?
>>
>>23726137
When the surface finish changes and becomes noticeably more matte. Theoretically just giving it a once-over with melamine sponge is enough. It doesn't need to be scraped to shit with 600 grit. Like 1000-1200 is fine, just be cautious.

What does it really *mean*? Well, it differs from kit-to-kit. Sometimes they're new looks, sometimes they're trying to capture a look that hasn't been done before, the most consistent thing is that Katoki is in charge

>>
>>23726560
These kits always make me laugh because of how there's like 1 youtuber all the people who paint them emulate. They get good at it and never vary their builds at all. The skill is quite impressive, often to the point where it's near indistinguishable from the work of the YTer they learned from, showing mastery. I always think, huh I guess they must be happy with their provisional half life hobbies. It's simultaneously encouraging that midwits can improve and a wonderful "there but for the grace of God go I..."

>>

If Resin Gundam become a legal thing again, they are gonna make changpla look tame in comparison. Resin can handle nurnies and fine details without compromise. It really depends on what taste you have.

>>23726808
Bandai's sculpt is dogwater but Resin tend to look like this, which is arguably worse.

After 7 years, I now know the reason the Hot Scramble Gundam is impossible to produce: the fin funnels need some trick to be able to fit together. The real issue are the added yellow fin expansions, which magically disappear if assembled in a wing formation that serves as the only real issue. Every other trick for the Hot Scramble can be resolved (like adding some attachment part to wrap around the beam rifle to make the fin funnels hook onto it, and new effect parts for the wings).
