The brief cameo from the Titans would have made for a fine spark for renewed war between Zeon and the Federation, and lots of 0083-esque scheming within both parties. You can still have Char return in the middle of all this to try and snipe the Zabis in the chaos, hell, maybe have it be that he takes over Shuji's body while he's in the Red Gundam. You can actually keep a lot of the show, so long as you don't do multiverse slop and give it more episodes to flesh out what it's going for, make it a bit less thematically barren.
