Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General!

For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!

For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry!

And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. The mods don't browse /m/ too often, so it's up to YOU to help keep our general clean and civil!

-= ACE CUSTOM GROUPBUILD =-

Build, customize, and paint a grunt mobile suit up for use by an ace pilot.
>You are taking the role of the Ace Pilot here - You're making the design choices when it comes to loadout, paint scheme, and suit customizations.
>Think about what your Ace specializes in, is he all in on offensive power, speed and maneuverability, or bulk and defense?
>While your pilot is an ace, he's not so special that he's getting super secret prototypes like Gundams or Mobile Armors. Keep your grunt relatively grounded to whatever setting it's from.

this nigga trying to make Sundowner

Have you looked into the Ballden Arm Arms or the Gunpla Battle Arm Arms HGBC kits? It looks like the shield uses a standard polycap, so you can probably find an arm with a standard 3mm peg and use that.
>>
>>23737279
>>23737281
The problem is that Im very new to this so I dont have much spare parts if any, this is the first time I even customize something
I will look into the ballden arm arms because it looks kinda like what I want for the zaku
>>
>>23737271
>any ideas to make the shoulder shield holdable?
Bend a piece of runner into handle shape and glue it on the shield
>>
>>23737294
EG Rx782 is pretty cheap and has one. You can glue that to Zaku shield.
>>
>>23737294
If you're specifically aiming for the Thunderbolt FAG's method of holding the extra shields (via sub-arm connections), then you'll want some combination of the following:

- HGBC Ballden Arm Arms / OPTION PARTS SET 08 Ballden Arm Arms (same kit, different release)
- HGBC Powered Arms Powereder
- HGBC Gunpla Battle Arm Arms

These will give you various varieties of sub-arms and 3mm pegs you can use for your Zaku shoulder shields. Of course, you're still going to need to attach those sub-arms to SOMETHING, so you're going to need to either modify your Zaku's backpack, or cannibalize another backpack. If you don't care about maintaining the aesthetic from the rear, then you can probably get away with swiping a backpack from a Portanova from the 30 Minutes Missions line (or any kit from that line ending in -nova), since those have a good amount of 3mm attachment points.

Looking clear coats recommendations for airbrushing (I assume long term cost efficiency vs rattlecans applies here too?).
I plan on using acrylic paints on Mr. Hobby 1500 primers if that matters. Most likely with an oil wash in the end.
Is just one matte and one gloss sufficient or is there reason to go more granular?

ABS plastic and paint thinner. A perfect couple.
>>

I didn't know anything about ABS and I just found out about it... how the hell do I paint inner frames, then? they're always in ABS.
I've primed the rest of the inner frames and they turned out fine... for now. what do I do now? the color is completely wrong now and I can't use any lacquer paint, right? that means I just wasted money on my Iron colored paint.

Use a non-lacquer primer for the first layer. If you prime properly, none of the paint is touching the plastic.

Primer cannot protect it entirely, especially for heavily thinned paint. Just use around 20% of thinner and pray the part with airbrush. Yeah the paint would be a bit dry and thick, but that's better than throwing away the kit from damage.
>>
>>23737382

I keep getting conflicting answers regarding ABS, lacquer and surfacer.
I have these 2 surfacers. Some people say these are safe for ABS, but aren't these lacquer that require thinning? wouldn't it just melt the ABS?
The easy way out is to simply not paint the inner frame, but I'm past the point of no-return with my current (first) project... I have to color these all-white primed inner frame dark.

The last one, if ABS is infamously bad and prone to breaking, then why is it keep being used in plamo? why not just use PS for all the parts?

>if ABS is infamously bad and prone to breaking, then why is it keep being used in plamo? why not just use PS for all the parts?
This is abit complicated to explain, so stay with me. It is impossible to use regular PS for toys and toy-like scale models because PS is very fragile and only suitable for minature, non articulated products. The reason why ABS has such a long lasting service in plamo production is because this plastic type is tough and durable, suitable for action figures. Bandai doesn't use the actual PS, but a patented recipe called Kyouka Polystyrene ( KPS ). KPS to put it simple, a plastic type with characteristic of both PS and ABS. It is more durable than regular PS and isn't vulnerable to paint thinner. Other plamo manufactures don't have access to KPS.

1. ABS is very weak against lacquer paint
2. but you can protect ABS with primer
3. but primer is also a lacquer paint
4. but it's fine because primers often dry faster and use less powerful solvents
5. but you still have to mix the primer with a solvent
my brain is fried...

>>23737467
So, PS is durable against paint, but not durable in general, while ABS it the complete opposite? someone needs to invent a new material.

>>23737470
I guess I'll just go for it... if this kits break... ugh goodbye money...

>>
>>23737474
>PS is durable against paint, but not durable in general, while ABS it the complete opposite?
Yep. You can soak PS in paint thinner and it would come out relatively fine, but you bend it slightly wrong and it breaks.
>>
>>23737474
Just use light coats. Especially with that metallic you're planning on using. You can skip the primer layer, and do light coats with rapid thinner. I've done plenty of frames this way and have never broken a part. I've also done plenty where I need to prime them first. Just don't let the paint pool anywhere and you'll be fine.
You could also invest in aqueous primer if you're really that concerned.
>>
>>23737449
funny thing about ABS is that it's actually easier to paint on it than PS. i keep getting rough surfaces when painting on PS because even hobby lacquers can attack it (cause microscopic melting on the surface). for a modeler who paints showroom finishes, that's crucial for me. i rarely experience flaking paint on ABS unless you abuse it like for example, moving joints.
>>
>>23737467
>this plastic type is tough and durable
Not these days anymore.
I remember reading that due to regulations it's borderline more additives than plastic by now and that they cheapened out on the components that make the plasic elastic/softer, hence why Lego for example is notorious for hairline cracks in the last decade or two.
>>
>>23737484
That's because lego is made in europe. Do you think plastic manufacturing regulations are global? Europe is just gay and retarded.

>>
Recently painted an old Robot Damashii Ryujinmaru that was yellowing, used thinned Mr. Surfacer on the white ABS parts and it did jack shit in terms of plastic damage.
>>
>>23737484
I think it is due to how many of them are recycled ABS and the thing was having a biodegradation already. The future of plamo is disposable plamo, you will have to buy the same model over and over again.
>>
>>23737485
Those hairline crack issues were/are worldwide with them and it's also an issue with other brands and companies - Robot Damashii/Soul of Chogokin joints with metal pins, anyone?

>"Messer manufactured on a different factory line from the Messer Type-F used by Hathaway's group as their main force. To differentiate it, the unit was designated Me02R-M01 Messer Type-M01, commonly known as the Type-M. Due to the nature of their guerrilla operations, its origin had to be concealed. While its external appearance differs significantly from the Type-F, its internal frame and basic specifications are built to the same standards. Gauman used it as a replacement for the Type-F he lost in the Davao air raid. The paint on the left shoulder of Gauman's machine was not completed in time, leaving the base color of the part exposed."
It's a new unit but the design itself is based on the novel version. Sort of like how Alyzeus uses parts from novel Penelope

So if I get a HGUC Hyaku Shiki Revive, will this gold marker make it look good?
>>

You're better off priming it with black first, then handbrushing the marker paint.

Looking into Vallejo varnishes and these niggers have gorillion flavors of them: regular, acrylic, polyurethance, mecha.
>>
>>23737980
They're all acrylic. The mecha clearcoats are the best for what you're doing. Water based gloss varnishes are all awful. The matte is very good. If you want a good gloss finish you're going to want to go for something a little harsher. Aqueous hobby color gloss is very good.
The polyurethane one is essentially permanent and is incredibly tough. It's just unforgiving and essentially impossible to remove. Their regular clearcoats aren't particularly tough because they're not meant for anything with articulation.
>>
>>23737980
Kaleido varnishes are really easy to use. Their claim of "like lacquer" is accurate to how they spray (not durability).
>>
>>23737326
>>23737980
Different types of top coat give you different sheens, so stuff like semi-gloss looks different from pure gloss and pure matte.

One of the recommendations for gloss coat is Quick Shine floor wax. It's cheap, easy to get, and you can pour it straight into your airbrush after giving the bottle a quick shake. It's super tough and levels out effortlessly, and you can easily clean it off by dunking in Windex.
>>
>>23737886
getting a revive HGUC Nu + HWS would be enough for me NGL if they're using this as the baseline.

Is there a general rule of thumb for what percent of the cost of the kit will be spent on the supplies to paint it?
I imagine real grades, despite the higher kit costs, will still have lower kit:paint cost ratios considering how much smaller the parts tend to be, and how much more paint will be oversprayed.

It's also weirdly stable for its stupid feet.

>>23738346

But does it pose well after, if it's dynamic I can probably warm up to it

As long as it's not at weird angles or you have to bend them a lot, or if they're in places where they'll easily wear off... it's tedious but manageable
And yeah, it does have retarded feet, what the fuck
I've high hopes for the Red Gundam though, at least its ability to look up. The kit in-hand looks like it looks less greebled than the actual design

God. It almost feels like magic that some galaxy brain could make plastic parts fit together this well. Do any of you know if there is an interesting "How it's made" video on gundam models? I kinda wana peek up the skirt at the design process. Don't plastic injection molds for stuff like this wear out with use and wouldn't that ruin the tolerance? How many frames could a mold make? I have so many questions. These things are neat.

They have worn out molds before, but it usually takes many thousands of prints over a short period of time for it to happen. And that's only happened once in recent memory, with the HG IBO kits causing accelerated wear and tear on the Gundam Frame molds due to so many of them sharing it.

Speaking of RG kits, there may actually be an opportunity for Bandai to knock out several birds with a single stone.

1. RG Zeta 2.0, with a properly designed transformation system.
2. RG Hyaku-Shiki, which is not only a supporting character MS, but also a Zeta MS and a Char MS, all in one. A very safe choice to make.
3. RG Delta Plus, everyone still loves Unicorn, and the other existing 1/144 scale Delta Plus is in novel colors.
4. P-Bandai RG Delta Gundam, combining all three of the above.

ffs is there any combination of hobby supplies that can interact safely
>>
>>23738980
You actually can mix them as long as you thin the aqueous with vallejo thinner first. I used to do this pretty often when I still used water based paints.
You can also use them in tandem without any issues. If it's had enough time to be dry to the touch then they won't interact.
Pic related. The dark part of this rick dias was aqueous gundam red mixed with vallejo mecha color black.
In my experience of doing things people say you can't do with paint, I have noticed the most important thing is a common thinner between them. You'll get the performance of the weaker paint out of it though.

The 3 main categories you'll interact with are water based emulsion paints (your regular acrylics like Vallejo), oil paints (enamels also go here, everything that's thinned with mineral spirits), and solvent based acrylics (the whole spectrum from Tamiya acrylic and Mr Hobby Aqueous to rebottled industrial/automotive paints like you find in the west)
As long as you only mix paints within the same category you won't encounter any trouble

Actually fun fact the vallejo metal colour line can be diluted with lacquer and alcohol based thinners. You can even mix it with tamiya or mr hobby acrylics with said thinners with no issue at all.
Thinning it with rapid or ISO alcohol is not only easier to spray but produces better results than using vallejos dogshit airbrush thinner.

>>23739124
A few years ago yes vallejo thinner was actually usable, new one is horrid. I can't seem to work out how to spray anything other than model air now even with their flow improver. None of my old ratios work anymore.
Don't have these issues when I try using AKs or VMS thinner though both of these are still inferior to spraying with just ISO for metal colour, finish is weaker with those.
>>
>>23739148
I just always did a 1:1 ratio of thinner to paint, then 20% retarder and it worked fine. It's all the new stuff. I don't really use the paint often anymore but I still use the black primer.

I initially assumed that alcohol based acrylics are part of the same family as purely water-based since they are also thinned with water.
Also I came across some DIY Vallejo thinner recipes (5-10% butyl glycol, 20-30 isopropyl, the rest is water) so I guess it can handle some alcohol.

so like I see how people can claim FAGs and shit are on topic because of the armor/mecha bits and whatnot (or the lore saying they are androids) but these and the schoolgirls have zero topical relevance to /m/. cars are mechanical, as are military models. this has jack shit to do with /m/

Odd choice but I dig the new engineering. the fact that it can store all weapons on the body is also a huge plus for me

I actually never use regular thinner. It's either rapid thinner for metallics or levelling thinner for everything else.

rapid dries faster so the metallic particles or whatever it's called won't get spread around as much, if you use leveling thinner with metallics, you're gonna get some ugly, glittery look

The base gogg is painted. Now I do the extra stuff.
I decided against the yellow hands. I painted them that color and strongly disliked seeing it in person. I moved the flair that it would have added by painting the frame gold. I still may repaint the hands green or black. I'm not sure how I feel about them being gray next to the silvers.
My thoughts on the MG gogg is that it's a pretty good kit. I think modern design sensibilities would conflict with the very simple design so it's good that it's old. It has some flashing issues so I think the molds are wearing out. The gogg has great presence and the simple design really makes the monoeye really stand out. It almost feels like a monster instead of a machine. I am really glad I sprung for the master grade instead of getting the high grade.
I am also very glad I didn't go with my original idea of another custom zaku.

>>23740078
That's not very nice. What did I do to you?
>>
>>23740094
And here's one of it with its lovely pilot.
I will also add that the speckles on the chest are intentional. I wanted just a tiny bit of grime.
>>
>>23740094
This looks really nice anon. The grey arms and the gold/brass inner section being visible where it separates is so so so cool, how did you get that color? I'm teaching myself how to drybrush metallics but I'm struggling to apply gold properly as opposed to easy silver has been
>>
>>23740109
The gold is just aqueous hobby color super fine gold over a tan base coat.. It's good paint and brushes on pretty well. I often brush paint with it for small details.
The gray is just mr.color zeon MS gray.
>>
>>23740111
>>23740109
Also I feel the need to add that this specific gold paint doesn't really care what the base color is.
>>
>>23740111
Is the Mr. Hobby Aqueous line (metallic or otherwise) intended to be brush painted? I always cognized their stuff as airbrush material.
>>
>>23740117
It brush paints fine. Just thin it a bit more than you would for the airbrush. I suggest using actual aqueous thinner instead of water. It can be thinned with water but the paint performs way worse if you do. Water likes to bead up weird when you thin paints with it.
For small stuff, I just put it on wet but it dry brushes great for larger things. I hand brush thrusters all the time with it when I don't wanna get my airbrush dirty for one part.
In fact, this gogg has some brush painted gold on the backpack where is has holes exposing the frame.

The product page images look official, the ratings for the seller are good, and I was unaware the there were bootlegs of the thing. Plus, there are several sellers who are listing it for between $150-165 so I assumed that was about the "standard" price. Presumably, stateside webstores are getting shafted by the tariffs and that's why they're selling for $200+.
