I bet it was a western woman who designed this crap.
Women: "In WW2 people put spare tank tracks on their tanks. Ima gonna do it on MS too because it looks cool."

A fucking 5 minute search on google would have prevented this shit from being added to gundam.

They didn't increase protection, the steel is way softer, and even made it worse against armor piercing rounds as the soft metal made it harder for the projectile bounce off when it hit the hardened steel armor.
And they also carried them to use as spares back then, for when the tank track broke.

But on a Zaku, it totally doesn't make any sense. The zaku doesn't use tank tracks anywhere. It doesn't need spare tank tracks. It is just added weight.

At least the nextflix series isn't canon.

You’ve already made your point, can we not have another thread like this?

The tank tracks may not make sense, but despite EF had MS, it still relies a lot on more conventional weapons such as tanks (which carried EF until MS got deployed), artillery and ATGM. Also it's a touch to give the Zaku the look of machine hastily put together with whatever part is available (due being actually a kitbash of destroyed Zaku) and to be coherent with OYW being WW2 in space (where track armours were common).

But it looks dope tho
>>
>>23737545
It'd lessen the effect of blunt melee impacts tho
Also do we even know what material OYW UC tank tracks were made of?

lol
It'd stop looking like scrap trash if you'd remove the Z

He's clearly losing it then.
God damn it, so many mecha designers are going senile and there's nobody to carry the torch anymore.

It worked, it does look cool

what if it has internal tracks to actuate the joints, like a machinery belt on steroids?

How do you know its pilot isn't claiming tracks from its defeated enemies as a cool trophy? Zaku are shown blowing up enough tanks that it'd be simple for one of them to fashion a robe out of their threads.

Biblically-accurate Eurasian theatre Zaku.

Zakus were made to fight against kinetic weapons, but forced to fight against beam weapons that just melt the armor. Tank tracks are ubiqtous and add additional thermal mass so there is a tiny chance that a glancing blow will just melt the tracks and not go through the Zaku itself.

Isn't this the literal makeshift repair job version.

it was shown in requiem for vengeance that tanktreadium is the most powerful metal, capable of absorbing shots from the gundam's beam rifle that would otherwise bore clean through an entire mobile suit

Because it was rebuilt from a damaged state in a hurry using what materials were on hand.
I'm not saying I like the design, just giving you the explanation.
