The alternative pre-spaceflight world and astronautics sequences were great. It was interesting to watch all the way through despite the threadbare narrative (the psychological development of the main character was significant, anyways). Nothing needs to be said about the ending sequence, but the small, imaginative details were really cool. The weird oxen, the circular televisions, the strange (weirdly pronounced Japanese?) language of the southern Republic. Etc. The whole thing felt very immersive for a single film production. Would be interesting to read some lore on this world.
I recommend watching the commentary DVD with Yamaga and Akai, pretty fun and lots of little bits of lore or stories about how they came up with these little details of worldbuilding. This old Manga Films DVD has the commentary and also has some extra footage of different still images (concept sketches, etc) set to the soundtrack of the film (and also soundtrack outtakes iirc)
was it rape?

I like how every character has a unique face structure, features and height, it makes it feel even more of an organic world.Peak Sadamoto.
