if you were to make your own mecha anime, how would you write it, what will be the main goal of your anime and what tropes are you going to avoid. and finally are there any successful "indie" mecha anime or manga
>>
Episodic space western with giant robots.
The main goal is to make a fun show that entertains a demographic of boys 4 to 16, and hopefully makes them fall in love with giant robot anime.
I could give a damn about "tropes" as long as it seems cool it's in.
>successful "indie" mecha anime or manga
Not relevant to my show.
>>
>>23758484
is it going to be similar to cowboy bebob
>>
>>23758473
post-apocalyptic story about a veteran mech pilot and his dog hunting kaiju while also dealing with criminals and trying to help a mute girl find her missing family.

>>
>>23758473
>how would you write it
very carefully. I'm honestly going too slowly. I need to figure out how to get my ass in gear and finish what I'm doing. It's hard work.
>what will be the main goal of your anime
I'm writing an /m/ adjacent novel (it's /m/ if Ace Combat and Ghost in the Shell are /m/), and my main intention with it is to create a certain dark and comfortable feeling.
I probably won't be able to describe it in words, which is unfortunate because I'm writing a novel.
I am trying to build a house.
>what tropes are you going to avoid
That's hard to describe. The ones I don't like?
It's simultaneously a very personal project, but it's also something I hope will be enjoyed by other people. I don't feel like I can talk about specifics because it's important to me that it be my own project and not something done for me by people trying to appeal to my tastes: so I feel shy about sharing what the project will be.
>are there any successful "indie" mecha anime or manga
I'm sure there are, but I'm sure it depends on how you slice the idea of "indie" and of "success"
>>
>>23758473
im sort of writing a "mecha" light novel thing.
The main goal would be to show different sides of the war and the commanders of different units and certain soldiers and stuff.
they would have a lot of comraderie, possibly romance and get really sad that their friends and homes get destroyed.
The tropes I would avoid is that members of the main cast being untouchable or really easy fights were grunts get merked but struggling battles where you feel the desperation to win like in the Kingdom manga

Mecha pankration. Fighters compete in sports tournaments with custom mecha designed around their unique fighting style. For example, there are kickboxers with centaur style legs or rollerskate feet attachments to augment their mobility and allow them to close in on their opponents better. Most combat consists of unarmed hand to hand striking and grappling, no weapons like sword or guns are allowed. Several of the highest tier fighters are wrestlers/grapplers who specialize in submissions, joint locks, and slams as opposed to ordinary punching/kicking, all with their own fancy names for each attack. Fighters are considered down when they either send a surrender signal to the onsite referee saying that they give up, their machine has been damaged significantly beyond working/fighting condition, or the built in life monitoring systems start showing signs of pilot health degradation, such as loss of conciousness. There are plenty of failsafes to ensure pilot safety, so even if a fighter's mecha gets piledriven into the ground, they can still walk away afterwards, albeit with a massive headache the next morning.

Yuri Isekai Battle Royale but each tournament is a different UC historical event.
The twist? It's a Puru training military VR program disguised as an entertainment show.

Aesthetics and technology levels somewhere between super and real robot, for lack of a better term. Basically the MC and antagonists' machines are made by ayy lmaos, and they have straight up superpowers and are insanely durable. The grunts and important supporting pilots all have more 'normal' mecha, but they use technology derived from the god machines, making them demi machines. I'd need to figure out exactly how bullshit the god machines should be so there can still be drama though. The setup is that a long time ago, a bloodthirsty alien empire invaded the Solar System, and mankind managed to beat them with the help of 5 heroes who discovered the original god machines on Mars. But 4 of those 5 were never heroes to begin with, and the one dissenter among them disappearing shortly after the aliens were defeated. Generations pass until the remains of the dissenter's god machine, fused with his conciousness, is found buried under a mountain of Europan ice. The MC activates it in a desperate attempt to protect his girlfriend and fight off an killsquad sent by the government to make sure that machine stays buried, and now he's found himself having to work with a rebel group he hardly trusts as he is the only person alive who can pilot the god machine now. A lot of the story is about the relationship between the MC and his GF, and about him becoming a hero despite wanting to be a nobody. And it's about the relationship between him and the dissenter's ghost, where the latter is trying to mentor the former but is also realizing he sees a lot of similarities between the MC and the current ruler of humanity. There's an undercurrent of the god machinese themselves potentially being alive in some way as well

I have no talent and no drive to learn any skills so if I ever tried to make anything it would be abysmal dogshit on the level of fucking Gen Lock. But it's fun to think about I guess.
>>
>>23758684
>I have no talent and no drive to learn any skills
I've successfully managed to fool people, and myself, into thinking I have talent and skill.
The trick is to *snaps fingerz&
But I got no drive.
>>
>>23758684
This is very similar to Tekkaman Blade.
>>
>>23758699
>But I got no drive.
Yeah I think that's my biggest issue, I just don't have the drive. Never have really despite thinking up random crap all the time, both original settings and fanfiction. I've tried to learn things like Blender or to do more drawing but got bored so fast. I'm not sure if it's laziness, lack of confidence, impatience, or all three. Shit sucks.
>>23758703
Yeah I'm not even remotely surprised this is similar to some other mecha show. I've never watched Tekkaman Blade but just reading the premise it sounds a lot like what I thought of. Shit maybe that's a sign I should watch that, even if it doesn't inspire me to actually work on my idea it sounds like something I'd enjoy.
>>
>>23758726
>I'm not sure if it's laziness, lack of confidence, impatience, or all three. Shit sucks.
for me i think it's chronic depression over some irl problems and the sense that, even if I do manage to create the kind of thing I'd like to, it won't solve what's bothering me. And that success might even cause more problems for me that I'm not willing or ready to deal with.
My writing has drifted towards trying to tackle what's bothering me in my life through my work, but i get exhausted with doing that.

Gosh I didn't mean to write this sort of post. This is a thread about people doing their own mecha stuff.
I guess mechs and depression can go hand in hand though.
>>
>>23758746
Writing or creating is a very personal thing after all, I think it's natural you'd want to reflect on how you've been when talking about it. Anytime these threads show up and I talk about an idea I had I just hope maybe it helps give another anon the kick in the ass he needs to get that project done.

A synopsis of muh novel project "Silencing Odd Stars" [working title]

In the near future on another planet, rival multinational corporations stage real military action against each other and broadcast it as sport.
The masses cheer on their favorite corporate forces like they're cheering for their favorite teams.
But the conflicts are real, with real casualties, and while they're framed as entertainment, the upper echelons of the super-corporations cooperatively orchestrate the conflicts to serve as a controlled demolition of the pre-corporate world, working together to strategically erode nation states and national sovereignty in favor of a corporatocracy, controlled by the major players.
These aggressive moves are not taken lightly, there are many national protests and resistance movements at play, but this is a world corporations will soon dominate militarily and politically, just as they have become an integral part people's lives economically through customer-first policies.
War is pitched to the masses as a game, and its heroes are "Idol Pilots", specially crafted androids, remotely operated by comatose humans, who fly into battle in deadly experimental fighters, and have their battles, daily lives, and images carefully managed, curated, and propagandized to the people like they are pop stars.
This is a future of AI life forms, cyborgs, and androids, living alongside human beings. Artificial life forms and cyber-enhanced humans share vulnerability to a new digital threat called "Joy-Code", a continuously generated random code string which is used to unlock the encryption protecting a cyber mind from hacking and alteration, and can be tailored to induce an intense high. Usually at the cost eventual of a cyber life form's sense of reality.
The story follows an Idol Pilot who begins having dreams and paranoid delusions pertaining to the idea that he is the reincarnation of an evil prince.
He fears he might have been infected with Joy.

Basically G Gundam but in an intergalactic murim setting. The pilots are also only allowed to use their mecha in space. On the planet, they fight with their superhuman martial arts.

I'd just make it a 12-episode side story to my novel series. I won't spoil my own novels, so this hypothetical mecha anime will be a mercenary group hired to help put an end to an unrecognized state in Africa.

As to the genre, I'll make it what you see in an action film but with mini mecha (and other sci fi trappings) and political intrigue.

Pic related is the geopolitical situation in my novels and my hypothetical anime would share the same setting.
>>
show focused on mecha-using mercenaries on the payroll of various space colonies embroiled in low tier conflict, also trying to defend themselves against larger earth-based central state playing them off against each other.

At some point worm hole tech is discovered, enabling interplanetary travel to one exoplanet, where the various sides and earth decide to share akin to antarctica.
A lot of war will eventually be brewing on this planet, with various sides creating factories of war and using foreign metals to create better mechs (due to constraints of worm hole travel)

Main guys operate out of a small space station and get fucked over constantly.

The only scenario I'd do this in is if I was hired to conceptualize a new Zoids show
I'd have an edgy protagonist that preteen boys would think is cool up against a standard evil empire. Many DBZ-esque powerups would be included, more than the standard mecha show. There's a distinct lack of chuuni mecha anime.
The purpose of this, of course, would be to sell countless model kits and make me millions. Making a modern mecha anime sounds like a significant financial gamble, so if I'm going to do one, it has to be from an already established, successful franchise, it has to be one that can appeal to both younger and older audiences alike and it has to be one that has a lack of competition in its niche.

Trying to make an anime that fits my personal preferences is just begging for bankruptcy.
>>
>>23759188
>Trying to make an anime that fits my personal preferences is just begging for bankruptcy.
Why not? Even in a hypothetical situation where you can let your fantasies come true, you would still aim to throw away that chance and pander to the lowest common denominator like a mindless corporate drone? Do you not have any passion of your own?
>>
>>23759188
it is indeed a gamble. but for my mecha series i would definitely post it on youtube or at least a version of it, and before i even do that i will make alot of fan animations of famous franchises to gather a fanbase, i think that's the only possible way to make a mecha anime
>>
>>23759287
I care more about remaining financially solvent than I do about mecha anime. And even in a scenario where I had infinite resources, it's like, the minute you begin to work on something professionally is the minute it ceases being a passion. Then it just becomes like any other career you spend your life on. Your relationship with it changes and you feel differently once you're following schedules, deadlines and structuring something for mass consumption to a broader audience than just yourself.

Also, it isn't as if I'm averse to the kind of show I described. I do like that sort of thing. But it wouldn't be the extravagant, over the top Xenogears style show that I'd really like to make. That would come later, once I've truly become an established figure that people line up to watch no matter what I put out

A pretty generic Super Robot Western with Cowboy Mecha vs giant creatures/monsters and other outlaw mecha. Main characters mech carries a large hand cannon on its hip, but one of it's arms is also a revolver styled cannon itself for the finishing shot. Eventually also gaining new equipment and guns. Very much inspired by the themes of Gaogaigar, Getter Robo and Texas Mack. Would feature a mixture of fun episodes and some serious backstory. Would have a fun cast of background characters as series like this do.

Main character is essentially the son of a legendary over-the-top lawman ( father is based on Jack of said Texas Mack fame) and his mech, who went missing after fighting the old crime lord, but the mech remained. The Mech has a special engine that starts to feed off the host and possibly corrupt a weaker pilot, but it allows it to go beyond normal specs to defeat bigger threats as the series goes on... But starts taking a toll on the MC.

Through the series they would fight various beasts/monsters,( and gets one that becomes his "horse/mount"). Main villains are remnants of the old Outlaw gang. Main rival is another human pilot who keeps returning with new mechs. Eventually a MkII hero unit is created that is more powerful than the MC mech by default, but also more stable, which the rival would steal. Eventually find out that Rival is the MC's half brother, and big bad leader is the Father, now corrupted... who has bigger plans and betrays both sons. MC is taken out of action for a bit, and brother takes over hero duties briefly, but starts running into trouble against new enemies due to his powerful, but limited mech. MC eventually returns in an upgraded version of his mech and masters the engine that his father couldn't, eventually leading to a happy ending.

Main goal? Entertainment, maybe some action figures. Tropes to avoid? Please. Going to use as many as I can for the fun parts. "Too much high power man"? Yes.

It'll be like Big O/Gridman. A bunch of roommates live in a shitty apartment and find high tech remote control equipment in the basement used to control a giant robot meant to protect the city from alien kaiju. They get orders from a secret organization.

Yeah, well if you weren't just an idea guy, you'd probably realize that no one is out there making televised anime just for fun. It's grueling work, resource intensive, time consuming work that I would expect to get something out of if I were to engage in it. If you want to hit me with bullshit like this, show me the mecha anime you've made. You did follow your interests regardless of everything else just like you're preaching right?

dunno, something that starts off as a fun, goofy sci-fi slice of life that gradually turns into a tragic self existential dread narrative as everyone starts dying and the protag loses all hope and will but is protected by plot armor so he gets to experience everything collapse around him.

Is there a mecha anime where the mecha is fabricated by the pilot's thoughts or powers? Like in Gundam, if Newtypes can control funnels and an entire mobile suit via Psychoframe, then why not have have the pilot visualize the mecha into reality?

Alternate history Cold War scenario where a few years before the Soviet Union would have collapsed, kaiju appear all over the world.
The need for defense keeps the Soviets together and soon both the Warsaw Pact and NATO are building mecha to defend against the kaiju. Japan has the technology shared with them by NATO and takes on the responsibility of defending the Pacific for the capitalist democracies. However, often leads to intense political situations due to them operating so close to China and North Korea, especially once they start helping South Korea with defense and starting their own mecha program.
A big difference I’d do over most mecha vs. kaiju fiction is that the mechs and kaiju are in a different scale. The smallest kaiju are 50 meters tall, while the largest mechs are 25 meters, with most being closer to 18-20 meters. Pilots work in teams, using superior agility to defeat kaiju via death by a thousand cuts, or by having one mecha staying back by several kilometers and hitting the Kaiju with heavy firepower that renders the mecha immobile, requiring their teammates to keep the beasts distracted.

Hey anon >>23758797 here, I like the premise of what you wrote but I only just now had a chance to read it. It's an interesting idea and a virus that essentially gets androids high is really neat. One thing I really like is that it's set in a transition phase between the collapse of nations and governments as we know them to full on corporate war. A lot of settings with similar subjects tend to either go with the corpos already in control of the world or so thoroughly entwined with governments that it's corporate rule in all but name. Also the fighters you mentioned, are they just highly advanced fighter jets or are they space fighters? Are they like Macross variable fighters?
