Anything theoretically can
>>23761818All Eva spinoffs have been AU since the beginning. That's because Eva itself is extremely narrow in scope and its universe has no meaning beyond the existence of the three main characters.
>>23761818the rebuilds are already AU anon
>>23761841Yeah, weak world building. I think Rei is simply a plot device for Shinji. The only real characters are Asuka and Shinji.
>>23761818>>23761848Fuck off zoomoid.
>>23761849What makes you think that?
I won't be surprised if the protagonist is female; it's been a trend lately.
>>23761856Yeah lately dating back to the 70s.
>>23761858Okay, give me some mainstream robot shows with a female protagonist that are not for fan service.
>>23761867>give me some mainstream robot shows with a male protagonist that are not for man service.
>>23761818The real question is whether Evangelion can stand on its own without its iconic cast. Eva has been for the last 30 its characters and their dynamics. Taro now has ahead the gargantuan challenge of writing a cast of characters which works as well as the one from the original Eva: this enough makes me question how good this show will be. In general I think Eva managed to catch lighting in a bottle back in the 90's and anything that had come later, nerd fun aside, is an inferior derivative that at most reiterates what was already said back in the day. The desire of Anno of having Eva AUs like Gundam is something I can understand, but was it really needed when your show is just 15 years younger than Gundam and essentially survived on its own little 26 episodes + movie until now? yes there were the Rebuilds, but there was also a 10 year gap between the last two. Eva remained popular in the anime fandom even without the push of the Rebuilds
Tsurumaki really is just Anno's eva slave in perpetuity huh
shit thread
>>23761897Why do you retards always talk about something being "necessary"? It's fucking entertainment, if they want to do a shitty movie they'll do it, if they want to lend the IP to France to do a stage play they'll do it. Why do you feel the need to analyze whether it's necessary or not?
>>23761897>Eva remained popular in the anime fandom even without the push of the RebuildsEva would be forgotten about without the Rebuilds. At best it shows up in retro "this is a classic anime you need to watch!!!!" lists like Bebop. 99% of Eva merch is from the Rebuilds and the fact that everyone knows who Mari is but not Mana should be a sign of what's more popular.
>>23761906>Why do you retards always talk about something being "necessary"? It's fucking 4chan posting, if they want to do a shitty post they'll do it, if they want to lend the thread to /a/ to do a thinly veiled porn dump they'll do it. Why do you feel the need to analyze whether it's necessary or not?Shit aside, they could try to do something new instead of relying on the legacy of something else. >>23761917I have some doubts about it, the Eva that seems to be discussed and has consolidated in the pop culture is definetly the orginal story, not the rebuilds.
>>23761920>they could try to do something new instead of relying on the legacy of something elseIrrelevant.
>>23761917Zoomers and younger are retarded, we know. We don't need to care about their opinions.
>>23761920>Shit aside, they could try to do something new instead of relying on the legacy of something else.Anno wants his own franchise to be like Gundam. Anno loves Gundam. The idea that people can't have these types of things and everything needs to be one and done is also stupid.
>>23761897That's a wrong attitude to go with.Rather than focusing on the second show's quality, you should be asking what are their plans for the "third" show at this stage.Of course, GEEWUN will always be the most popular cashcow, but they can turn it into a larger franchise as long as they will continue pushing the new entries out past the initial resistance of the core fanbase.
>>23761841Exactly. The show establishes that there are no angel battles before episode 1, there can be no angel battles after episode 24, and THE third impact already happened at the end of the show, and cannot possibly happen again. Where is there room for more content? Battles between human armies with their own MP Evas? That show would suck.Eva tied everything up in its runtime.
>>23761933>past the initial resistance of the core fanbaseThe core fanbase loves anything Eva, western irony poisoned millennials are not the core fanbase.
>>23761943Loves anything Eva that is related to original cast, you mean.Would it love Eva in the name only? With no Shinji, Rei, Asuka or Kaworu?
>>23761867
>>23761818No because Evangelion is Anno's self insert therapy session.
>>23761990He said not for fan service. "Big titty otaku gf" is undeniably fan service.
>>23761990But she isn't the protagonist
>>23761818I don't see why so many people seem to struggle with this idea when it comes to anime. tenchi's been doing it for ages too.
>>23762049>so many peopleIt's just americans.
>>23761818I think like Code Geass, Evangelion and it's fanbase is too heavily attached to the original cast for AUs to really catch on.
>>23762065>HUUUUUUUUUU DUUUUUUUUUUR AMUUUURICUUUUUUURGo eat sidewalk
>>23761841>threeOne
>>23762049The west is big Genwunners for everything, they hate the idea than things can be more than just one entry.
>>23761850He heard eva was deep and influential so he thought that meant all main protagonists must be equally developed and important, but he forgot to watch the fucking anime.
>>23762099There's like six hundred different Batmen. Your generalization is dumb.
>>23762107And the only one most people care about is when its Bruce. Comics are unable to move past their own "first" versions most of the time (Whether or not those successors are good or not is another issue).
Honestly I'm shocked they haven't tried this sooner. Stuff like Mazinger, Gundam or Getter do it all the time. >>23762099Any time they make a new Spider-man movie or cartoon nobody needs to be explained that it's a new thing. Western adaptations do this all the time.
>>23761841So this is what they meant when they said Eva was "about the characters"
>>23762177>It's spiderman but he's uhhh black lolWow such high concept!
>>23762099I am no genwunners, it's just that Eva wants to do its AU a bit too late in my opinion. While for Gundam and other series having multiple casts of characters in multiple settings is the norm (see Gundam), this is absolutely not the case for Eva. From a cultural point of view, if I can use this word, the Eva that most love is the network of relationships that the characters have with each other, which is then inserted in the broader context of the story settings. A total blank slate with at most some liefmotif from the original show would be a huge jump for Eva as a franchise. So huge that I would bet my left testicle that some sort of multiverse bullshit will come out to justify some original character to come back at some point in the story
>>23762225Retard.
>>23762205While I will happily agree that Miles is a complete Poochie you're ultimately still missing the point. Alsohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1PePr8hAsc
>>23761841>>23761897I don't agree that Eva universe is narrow.I want to watch a series that's for example about Nerv operators, or Nerv security/intelligence. There's lots of possibilities with the Nerv vs Seele dynamics. Show me who the fuck is the cat lady. Then Rebuild left the time skip possibilities, Wille vs Nerv, show what the fuck was that all about Commander Nagisa and all that. Then of course there's the possibility of a real AU and in that case you have endless possibilities with a different way of presenting the Eva vs Angels, the Impacts, Adams, Lilith, etc. A totally new cast is indeed a risky move, but the setting and universe provides a lot of tools to work with.
New Eva-01? Design
>>23762334I'll call it the Nu-Unit-01.
>>23761818It sure worked out well for Gundam. Every AU series has been just top notch quality. Interesting, believable and likable characters, outstanding world building and sensible plot lines. Pinnacle mech designs, the list goes on and on!
>>23761818They've been doing AUs the entire time>Show>Death & Rebirth, EoE>Petit Eva: Evangelion@School>Rebuild>MangaWhy wouldn't another AU work? That's all it's ever been.
>>23762327It's a mile wild, but an inch deep. There's no actual substance, just surface level ideas.
>>23762384Because you say so?
>>23761934>The show establishes that there are no angel battles before episode 1, there can be no angel battles after episode 24, and THE third impact already happened at the end of the show, and cannot possibly happen againa proper AU could disregard everything NGE laid out and do its own thing utilizing only recurring themes & visuals>is there room for more content? unlike the shitty rebuilds, a proper AU wouldn't have to confine itself to what came before
>>23762379Earlier Evangelion AUs simply used the same characters (Shinji Ikari and his father Gendo, Misato Katsuragi, Asuka Langley Soryu, Rei Ayanami, et al). I do, however, hope this upcoming AU avoids using them.
>>23762379>>Death & Rebirth, EoE>AUThe absolute state of /m/.
>>23762530He's correct.
>>23761818>Twatter thread on /m/This board is truly dead
>>23761846what he mean is that a all new cast of characters in a universe outside of Shinji's kinda like how Wing has nothing to do with Universal Century shows.
>>23761818I don't care for AUs after G-Cucks.
>>23761818No. This is because of the world Anno set up. Now, if it's someone that isn't Anno, yes. Because EVA is as loose as a goose that just wants to be for the taking. But I accept 3.0 + 1.0 as the definitive finale. He should do something else.
>>23762316>It's spiderman but he's uhhh a gook lolWow such high concept!
>>23762648>It's anon but a massive faggot Wow such high concept!
>>23762571wing doesn't have -nothing- to do with UC, just look at characters like zechsanyway i get what anon meant but rebuild cast only shares superficial traits with tv cast, they're basically different peopleit's all AU to varying degrees
>>23762777>anyway i get what anon meant but rebuild cast only shares superficial traits with tv cast, they're basically different people>it's all AU to varying degreesRebuild still had the first two movies that were direct retellings of the original series though, before it branched out. Yeah, there were differences back then, especially in the 2nd one, but even, say, SEED wasn't so close to MSG.
>>23762388>>23762388The universe revolves around Shinji and everything else is secondary. Did you even watch 3.0? Proves Anno did not give a fuck about the lore and it's just there to look cool in a superficial manner lol
>>23762648He is barely spiderman and more like tokusatsu nippon ichi #13565467

>>23762205>>23762648Arguing in bad faith. I accept your concession. Don't post again.
>>23762388The series is surface level. Things are just name dropped and barely explored. These subjects weren't explored at all till the Nintendo 64 game, then never again.
>>23762831And they are all Bruce Wayne
>>23762834lel zoomers read a wiki page and think they know shit
My current favorite genre is tsunderes from mecha anime in an office lady AU.
>>23762837Why do you think videos like "X explained" got popular? They don't actually experience things themselves anymore.
>>23762837Yeah, that's why I don't bother to argue with people concerning deeper NGE lore if they haven't played the N64 game.
>>23762841
>>23762831In the comics Bruce is still and will remain as the main Batman for all the eternity, there was a year where he "died" and was replaced by Dick, but we knew he was still alive and making his come back. The batman that sells is Bruce, not Christian Bale Bruce or Manhattan Bruce.
>>23762837Worse, they read a 100 page thread on evageeks discussing an interview by the dude who did the colors in episode 10 on the newtype magazine, carefully translating what he said and all the possible meanings it could have.
>>23762862Yeah. Splitting hairs on different versions is irrelevant and not what is meant by genwunnerism. They are all still the person people want.
>>23762862The Batman that sells is poor Bruce.Actually, it's the only DC comic book that sells nowadays.
>>23761841This.Just compare tv shinji with the rest, there are enough differences even in tone, they could be considered essentially AU's.
>>23762862And nobody had any trouble understanding or enjoying TAS, Justice League and Brave and The Bold, plenty of off continuity and elseworld books get made and enjoyed
Is /m/ full of newfags today or are people purposely pretending to not understand decades old terminology that is used every day in this board?

>>23761818Anything can work with AU, but the question is will the AU be good.
Will it be like Tsurumaki and Taro's latest projects where all the new characters and plot get ignored and the only things people care about are cameos from the older more popular characters and maybe one character's ass
>>23763057The better question is will you complain about it regardless of the show's outcome like you have been doing for literally every new show?
>>23762530If you think EoE Shinji is the same person from the TV series you have zero media literacy.
>>23763109NTA but was it ever stated that they were different universes between TV and EoE?Wasn't a lot of the events from EoE originally planned for the TV series? (Which is why a lot of scenes are parallel between EoTV and EoE, like deas misato and ritsuko, eva-02 under the lake, etc)Shinji "wanting to be here" at the end of EoTV I always understood as just the same ending of EoE: he rejects instrumentality and prefers the individuality and being himself. I do remember 1 single instance of an official piece of merch (a trading card IIRC) where it kind of suggested EoTV was shinji's heart complemented (so like he accepted instrumentality), as opposed to his rejection in EoE. However that doesn't make too much sense to me. If he had accepted instrumentality, there would be no Shinji or any individuals at all anymore. Also the coral seafloor scenery of the Omedetou finale is also paralleled on EoE to the part Shinji talks with Rei and Kaworu and tells them he "wants to be here".It's ambiguous really, but I don't think it'd make sense to "accept yourself" if you're complemented with all other humans, since it's more like a hivemind.Another thing, besides the "theatrical edition", the original Genesis:13 and Genesis:14 contained both episodes 25 and 26 respectively, suggesting all 4 episodes make the ending, and aren't meant to be separate or AU.
>>23763146It's not a different universe, that guy is a twitterfag and deserves no (You)s.
>>23762388Explain the purpose of Seele without talking about Shinji or his mom and dad.
>>23763146>>23763157People have become retarded about the whole concept of "timelines" in media. If the Gundam 0079 movies came out today we'd see people treating them as some new timeline.
>>23763218>dude but how could amuro be from 3 different nationalities? they HAVE to be different universes!!!!1!1!!1
>>23762308thanks you too>>23762327I never stated that the Eva universe is narrow. The first thing that comes to my mind is ANIMA and the wild shit that happens there. Even the rebuilds are somewhat in that territory, too bad they never expand the post 2.0 world and everything is there just kinda for show this ignoring the clear changes they made in plot/""lore"" between movies. The question is if the show will manage to stand on its own after 30 years of Eva being Shinji and co.
>>23763109this, fuck that movie.
>>23761818Pretty much all large mecha franchises have gotten the AU treatment at some point, but I think the issue will be how they approach the EVAs and the Angels, since both have a hyper-specific purpose of the former combatting the angels and the latter trying to kickstart the third impact before Gendo can. I guess you could reduce it down to a generic "super robot fights monster of the week" with NGE branding, but that seems rather uninteresting. It's also funny how the end of rebuild was Anno telling all the fans to move the fuck on with their lives, but has no qualms about doubling back to cash out like a total kike.
>>23761818of course, it opens up new opportunities to sell more merch, I'm sure they can only sell the same EVA figures only so many times until fans get bored, so it's time for an excuse to have AU variants
>>23763733>I guess you could reduce it down to a generic "super robot fights monster of the week" with NGE branding, but that seems rather uninteresting.I mean, look at Persona 3/4/5. They all made up different reasons to keep the calendar system going where each month has a big boss battle. I'd imagine something similar. We'll get weird monsters appearing due to some behind the scenes plot slowly unveiled, it's just that the behind the scenes plot will be different from the original Eva's.
>>23763760now they'll rip off a mix of Thunderbirds and Kamen Rider instead of UFO and Ultraman
>>23763207Keel Lorentz and his buddies were dying men and saw this as an opportunity to never die if they achieved HIP within their lifetime
>>23761818a spinoff in the same universe would be impossible but every anime can have an AU and it'd work. AUs are just completely different anime with some similar motifs, doesn't even have to have the same themes and vibe if you're talking about Gundam style alternate universes. Eva designs and stuff like ATs are recognizable enough that it'd easily work
ok but who is the mech designer?
>>23761931>Anno loves Gundam. Then he should work on Gundam. What's the problem? They don't pay him enough?
>>23761818Only if its with other characters and new Eva models, and even then it wont be as interesting like Gundam or Kamen rider, Eva isn't a particular interesting concept on itself, the characters and plot did the heavy lifting
>>23764581>Eva isn't a particular interesting concept on itselfYou people say the stupidest shit with so much confidence.
>>23761818Any story can be reworked to fit gimmick templates with enough care and effort. The real question is, even if it were as engaging as the original series, will a certain subset of fan be able to accept it without spontaneously combusting?>>23763879I actually wouldn't mind this at all.
>>23764578>he should work on gundamAnon...
>>23764585Only a person with double digit IQ who is just following a treand would disagree with that statement. Yes, Eva is narrow as fuck. You don't like eva, you just heard it was kwool and influential and decided to hang out with the cool kids who actually gave a thought ot two to the series, well you're fucking retarded.
>>23764578You don't know what "Studios" are, do you?
>>23761818Probably, but not this soon. Gundam didn't just immediately start pumping out AUs. They first did a few series that had a new protagonist but the original cast still played a big role, then they did a few series that took place during the original series but featured different characters, before finally doing their first AU.
>>23764821NTA but your argument can go both ways. You don't really think Evangelion is narrow, you just read others say it.
>>23769916>not this soonEva has been getting sequels and spin-offs with Shinji, Asuka, Rei and Kaworu for decades already
>>23770597not in anime
>>23761839Fpbp.
Are they ever gonna explore the ayys that left the seeds? There’s potential for a whole sci fi universe that normies would eat up like Star Wars
Or like an au where the technology in Adam/Lillith cloning is extremely refined and everything basically runs on things with red cores inside them
>>23761818Every Eva spinoff has been it's own thing, from the Raising Project games to the manga adaptation to even yes, the Rebuilds.Just find a way to make Re-Take instead, give it as many episodes needed to tell that story
>>23775597I'd rather Taro get to do something original with hopefully a new, original cast so he has full freedom.
>>23775305Nah fuck off.
>>23775597>Re-TakeThey'd need maybe 50 or so episodes for that
>>23775691Would it though?
NGE and EoE are all you need, loop (Rei in Ep. 1) should have prevented things from getting this bad. Rebuilds lent major plot point significance to Mari, who wasn't thoroughly explained - real world meta of "move on" is great and all, but, it doesn't make sense to break the loop ending with a character that had no thorough participation or weight in the original plot - and that turns to zero, if the shitty "clone of Yui and Gendo's friend" theory isn't true. It was marketed as permanent closure, felt ham-fisted compared to EoE (which did a much better job of reflecting what a creator wanted to do), and now we're supposed to look forward to a reboot or spin-off that makes no sense from a different lead?
>>23779412>loop (Rei in Ep. 1What a retard.
>>23784238>Adam and Eve symbolism in EoE>unclear follow-up on further returns from instrumentality>Episode 1, Shinji briefly sees Rei/Lilith before seeing SachielNot too far out there.I don't like the Rebuilds as much as NGE/EoE, but, the scene with Kaworu and Kaji lends good evidence to a loop anyways. The best proof we see of that in NGE without any revisionism is the mirage like appearance of Rei in Episode 1. There was no way Shinji could have seen her before, as she came to be after Yui.
>>23761818Yes, it can work, sort of. The original was mever intended as a basis for anything other than character study though, so expaning on the setting that was made for a self-contained story that begins with quantum Rei observing Shinji and ends with quantum Rei observing Shinji is going to be harder than something like Gundam. The angel plot and Project E itself was initially started as a gateway to Human Instrumentality. The angels could've been dormant forever if SEELE did not dig up Adam. So how do you make an AU for that? Let's see>just using different characters, can work as a straight take on mecha>original veering left mid-events, say some political disagreement splits the UN and you get a war>different configuration of events that leads to drastic changes in plot, utilizing the original characters and their archetypesThe last thing is the most interesting to me personally, because I'd like to see how the original characters would react to different circumstances. For example, what if Asuka and Shinji were childhood friends raised together by Gehirn in Germany? What if Shinji was sent to live with his relatives like in the manga? Etc. However, writing the original characters is kind of hard and Anno himself failed at that in Rebuild. He needed Akio Satsukawa, the professional writer and editor who actually wrote their archetypes in the og anime. But he left after 2.0.
I like the way Anima handles itself as a spinoff>Timeline where some sort of minor or major change happens prior to or during NGE>Time skip to a fresh setting that the change butterfly-effected intoYou could realistically create endless spinoffs with this format. Anima specifically is what would happen in a world where Kanji doesn't die and a new conflict that arises in that future. Not to mention that it plays into the Eva lore that was established by the rebuilds, in which the universe is endlessly repeating itself until the events of 3+1
>>23788376>The original was mever intended as a basis for anything other than character study thoughA lot of the sci-fi elements (including the FAR) are already mentioned on the 1993 proposal book. There's a lot of things that were changed from that initial draft, but a lot of elements remained.
>>23761818Everything is so tied up in the symbolism that any expansion upon it runs the risk of ruining the text. You could do a show about Nerv, a show about Seele or the team behind Jet Alone, these shows could even be good. But what would they really add to Eva? Is there anything the Nerv show could do that wouldn't be out performed by a similar show in its own universe or anything it could say that doesn't repeat/muddle/fuck up the original Eva's message? I don't think its impossible for an expansion to play nice with everything from the original. Its like asking what if we could make spin offs to Perfect Blue or a sequel to Paprika.
>>23789692>Not to mention that it plays into the Eva lore that was established by the rebuilds, in which the universe is endlessly repeating itself until the events of 3+1Is that supposed to be a good thing?
>>23790191Internal consistency is a good thing I'd say. Or at the very least a harmless neat thing.
>>23790855>internal consistency>DebuildOk
>>23789692>plays into the Eva lore that was established by the rebuildsthey even kinda lean that way in the TV ending when they go full Waynes World and "woah, that eva totally sucked, let's try the happy high school comedy eva!"
>>23761818There's plenty of room for them to explore FAR-related situations on other earthlike planets, dunno if that's an angle they'll go with but it's a viable option for an example
>>23795772>FARoh yeah that bullshit they invented for the video game and claimed was the deep lore
>>23761928It's our generation's fault for not trying to raise them on better media sources and educate them about pirating communities etc. so they know about and go for Sephirotic over Netflix, etc.We did a Yang Wen-Li and acted like it was up to others to write history whist we had the opportunity
>>23795773It gives them an out to explore a new plot and cast with recognisably 'eva' imagery & creatures/lore, the teaser doesn't look like that's where this new series will go but I think it's a perfectly commonplace mechanism for them to employ to be able to expand the franchise's scenario without having to work anything in directly from the old series/rebuilds
>>23761841The example Anno gave when he talked about it initially was G Gundam, meaning:None of the original charactersNone of the original concept or themesEven the robots are completely different in spirit only vaguely resembling the originals
>>23802456 RX-78-2 was in G-Gundam bro God I hate speedwatchers
>>23761818Depends on what they want to do with it.
