Taro now has ahead the gargantuan challenge of writing a cast of characters which works as well as the one from the original Eva: this enough makes me question how good this show will be. In general I think Eva managed to catch lighting in a bottle back in the 90's and anything that had come later, nerd fun aside, is an inferior derivative that at most reiterates what was already said back in the day. The desire of Anno of having Eva AUs like Gundam is something I can understand, but was it really needed when your show is just 15 years younger than Gundam and essentially survived on its own little 26 episodes + movie until now? yes there were the Rebuilds, but there was also a 10 year gap between the last two. Eva remained popular in the anime fandom even without the push of the Rebuilds
