-=READ THE GUIDES=-Welcome to the Gunpla/Plamo General! For those new, please read our guides. We have many resources available to help you in many different aspects of the hobby. They're here for you!For the unclear, "plamo" is short for "plastic model". "Gunpla" is thus short for "Gundam plastic model". Many different kinds of models are built here, ranging from mecha to planes, cars, musume, you name it! If you're new, you're gonna screw up. Don't worry! If you're seasoned, don't make the newbies worry! And don't forget to report shitposting and spam. >>23785868Finished up Sanjuro. He's a samurai beetle resting up for repairs after a brutal fight.I mainly wanted to try out a bunch of effects on him to see what I'd want to keep using on future projects, and what I might not use as much.Ammo's Starship Wash continues to be my favorite for a very quick way of dirtying up a model, but their Shader Starship Filth surprised me. If you spread it around a bit with a brush, you get some nice streaks and shadows going (on this guy it's almost all on his right arm).I'm particularly pleased with the stain on his upper right horn.
He comes with a couple options for his visor. I went with the cracked one to go with the overall look.
And if anyone's curious, this is everything I used to do the weathering effects. I had to stop myself from adding more onto there cause I was spending way too much time on something that was supposed to be a quick paintjob.
Bonus round: this was what he looked like when first put together.

>>23785929I'm honestly in disbelief at how many people are willing to sit through looking at those tranny talons. I'm pretty sure I'm not the target audience for this shit anymore. Gunpla is relaxing because it's so easy, but I might take up scale stuff or krieger or something else that doesn't attract these types.
>>23785929Bad. he's an extreme casual snapshitter who only paints his nails like a faggot. Those nails LITERALLY repulse me. I can't stand watching even 5 seconds of his video.

>>23785934it's got to just be kids/teenagers watching who can't actually get into the hobby so they live vicariously through the reviewer that happens to have the highest output. reviews of bandai kits become pretty redundant once you've built a couple of each grade and know what to expect

>>23786107No, they're amazing. Just don't hamhand them when you notice an overly tight joint. They're not action figures but for model kits they're extremely solid. As long as you aren't a 3rd world monkey whose first instinct is to UNGA BUNGA a tight joint, you'll be fine. Just carefully relax the joints as close to the peg instead of leveraging them.

>>23785868Terror mirage is done. It's crazy that these two are done with the same blue paint. It's some good stuff. Really liking the SMS gem tone paints.
>>23785868I got all this Daban Jagd Doga parts off the runners and cleaned up. The last Daban kit I built was the Grey Zeta years ago and this kit has all the same issues. Lots of flash at the seams and at the ends of pegs that needed cleaning up, and mis-sized sockets for almost every joint requiring me to find similar Bandai sockets in my extra parts box. I was hoping they'd improved over time.
>>23786158The fact that you can freely switch around the wing effects means you're basically done with the dead stock DX version at this point. Those new effects are beautiful, bigger in size, and has alternatives in terms of its central joint depending on whether you choose to deploy the DRAGOONs or not.

>>23786252These aren't the resin ones. I like them pretty well. They take a lot longer to build than a comparable gundam so it really feels like I got my moneys worth out of them. I really dislike having to work with anything resin so I don't think I'd have gotten them if they werent plastic.
>>23786247their metal build-based ones (88xx) are good, but the bandai recasts (66xx) are horrible.
>>23786254Ah yeah I knew they were plastic, I just meant that when I originally looked they were all resin and since then wave has done a lot of injection ones. I'm starting to gravitate towards ma.k and these look to be in the same vein of workload. Next time I'm at polaris I'll probably grab one.

>>23786581Just use a super fine sanding sponge to remove the liner. The lines get super crisp as their width is just determined by the depth and how firm your sponge is
>>23786620is the snapfit super tight?Star Destroyer almost destroyed my fingers
>>23786647It's on the tight side, but only a few needed me to break out the jewelry pliers to squeeze them. Still only had to circumcize two pieces in the chest to get them to go in.

has anyone tried doing a "downgrade" mod for this bad boy to make it closer in appearance and size to the actual stargazer?
>>23786676No idea, but it's weird it's 1/87 again just like the Fat cat RG God Gundam upscale. Maybe it's making all the Gundam's evens with the Nu which they love cloning?
>>23786676the tinier the part the harder it is to consistently replicate with injection molding. they don't have the best equipment so they just make the whole model bigger.
1/69 scale ur mom
>>23786687Some kits I can kind of understand that reasoning but then there's "original" kits like the PLA Jedda which was 23cm despite not being a copy of any existing kit. In the previews they pointed out how it was 23cm as a selling point. Supposedly some changs complained so they supposedly lowered it to 22cm, only for kits to arrive and people noticed it was still as big as a Nu.
whens the next online hobby expo?
>>23786710why do chinks put "1/100 scale" on kits that have no lore size?
>>23786679one of the more modest looking chink semi-original kits but it still looks too busy
>>23786721Because they explicitly want people to think that the kits are equal to what Bandai makes.
>>23786721jeddah is canonically 21.8m tall. It should be between 21.5-22cm for it to not look weird. The Katoki style legs they gave the kit didn't do it any favors.
>>23786727>>23786725even their original designs have 1/100 labels. 1/100 of what?

>>23785995I definitely would have recommended sanding the ball joints for the torso, they are exceedingly tight and the connections to them are very tiny stalks that can easily shear/twist off with that much force. Really just a lot of joints on this thing I would give a good sanding before putting them in, the breakage and stress risk isn't worth it. Pretty much the only joins that don't really need it are the ones on the skirt connector.
>>23786755NTA but how do I sand ball jointsSeems hard

>>23786761With small parts you can just hold them and rub them on sandpaper instead of the other way aroundThe kit in question has a little inserting tool you can use to hold them as well

>>23787056>This happens every single time. It's a horseshoe. Eventually experienced modelers grow tired of these types of trends and want to go back to simpler designs. The greebling is a relatively recent trend because tech caught up with what people thought they wanted. I think refinement will be the next trend because people are already sick of the overdesign. Chang is pretty much ushering in this desire.
I have never seen a plastic that discolors worse or more easily than the olive drab of the MG GM Sniper Custom. Thank god I'm painting this fucker.
It seems like the chinks dont actually know what the scale labels are for. they just see bandai kits have it so they put it on as well
>>23787047Why?
>>23787154>>23787047Relatively new airbrusher here. I've had about 10 sessions so far and have yet to clean my airbrush at all (like fully taking it apart). I just flush it with some mr tool cleaner a little bit after each paint change and that's it. I'm assuming all this cleaning stuff is if you're brushing with acrylics?I've yet to have any clogs or anything like that.
>buy FSS kits bro>they're great bro>
>>23787159>Well it's not gonna ride itself.
>>23787159buy plastic kits instead of brittle resin
>>23787158Even with acrylics you don't have to clean all that often. I usually do it about every 10 projects or so. Though I could probably disassemble and clean it in my sleep.
>>23787154>Why?For me personally, it's more of a pain in the ass than anything. Like I said, I have a side load so I can just take off the cup, transfer it to a jar and throw a couple drops in the load and run it through, no problem. Backflowing does no good and for new folks the just end up screwing up their needles or nozzles. Or blowing paint all over themselves fully pulling the trigger while they do it.
>>23787165but I thought resin kits are the superior choice for modellers.

>>23785868I've finished the vintage zgok, it was quite an experience working with an old model and doing weathering. I did with a sponge and 4 colors (orange, light brow, dark brown and metallic), and the oil streaks with oil paints (it was much simpler than I thought). Now, to practise more subtle and controlled weathering, this one has gone to hell and back several times.
>>23787218I did some small mistakes, but they are barely noticeable. The left leg split on the seam line once I build it, and I didn't mask correctly on the waist, where the pink and red touch.
>>23787222
>>23787225Posability is quite limited and some parts are a bit floppy, as expected from a kit from 1981 (and I think this kit is from the original prints), but it can do a decent enough walking pose and hold an arm. I really want to do more vintage kits, despite the problems this was really fun.

you can't use lacquer coat on ABS? Fuck. All of my backlog are ABS kits.
>>23787321Original is always the best. Eithet that or perfectibility
>>23787684If you plan to display it with any of the hatches open, I highly recommend matte clear coating the inner frame before you do the armor. >>23787685It makes ABS brittle and ABS is usually used in kits where they need stronger than PS plastic. Usually means they will snap, especially if you do more than a super thin coat first.
>>23787689but what if you apply thin coats of lacquer primer lacquer paint, acrylic coat, then lacquer coat?
>>23787690The primer is the only part that would affect the ABS unless you absolutely soak it with the paint layer where that thinner reactivates the primer. Once you get a full coat on the plastic, the layers above it don't matter. If you can find some acrylic primer that can withstand lacquer paint on top, or just some other primer that doesn't break ABS you will be fine.
>>23787685Start with a light base coat and you'll be fine. That or use a water based primer.
>>23787690Multiple thin coats of lacquer primer is fine

>>23787779They're all a worse version than Sinanju which is a worse version of Sazabi. Get a Sazabi.
>>23787779Pretty sure the Narrative version comes will all the spare parts to make the other two. So as long as you paint get that.
>>23787779Sinanju Stein Ver. Ka is the design before the Sleeves got to them and modified them for Full Frontal and Zoltan, so it's vastly different from the later two.Sinanju Stein Narrative Ver. Ka has extra weapons, fully separated color-coded parts for the Sleeves insignias instead of stickers, more extra parts and an actual Zoltan figurine. It's the best version of the Sinanju, so that's the one you want.
>>23787779Materials and hands.
>>23787786What I wouldn't give for a release of the original sinanju ver ka with properly separated sleeves while maintaining the rock solid full ABS build instead of shitty floppy PS molds the steins use.
>>23787747Anon, literally none of the Japanese kit have resin sharpness. Most of those sharp Chinese kits had to be inflated in size in order to achieve better sculpt. The mushy looks of plastic model is here to stay.
>>23787779Narrative Stein ver Ka has improved sculpt for the hi beam rifle, longer thruster tanks and better hands. Ver OVA is just the older and outdated version of Stein Narrative Ver Ka.
>>23787813Compare how soft the lines are on say a 2005 MG to a 2015 one. That's the sort of thing I'm talking about. It's reached a point where anything further is pointless unless you are going full chink greebleshit.
>>23787831The modern kits look sharper because they have more part separation to improve the sculpt. The momment they get lazy with the part separation, we suddenly time travel back to 2005.
>>23787838Even on that one it's still far sharper than things used to be. You can tell just looking at the edges of sections like the upper leg detailing. If it was 20 years ago the angles would be much softer. That's not to say it isn't still a lazy mold, but that's a separate issue.
I still don't know why people like the Infinite Dimensions Nemesis
>>23787840Even if you compare Light Cannon to 20 years old kits, it looks about on par. Rick Dom and Zaku of the same line look so much better because they actualy part separated that shit.
Gqux Rick Dom has the best sculpt in the line.
>>23787849SEED Dom Trooper is still better
>>23787848I don't particularly agree. Take the ridges on the top of the zudah's chest or at it's crotch. They are all pretty rounded angles. The panel lines are shallow and kind of mushy. The hinges for the shield spikes are almost molten, etc.
Greetings /m/ bros. I went to the USA Gundam Base out in Chiraq last week. It was an experience for sure.Firstly, getting there is a ballache. Why they couldn't just have this in the Schaumburg Mall or Mitsuwa is besides me. The fashion outlets are a weird place, but it's all upscale stuff.Anyway, as for the Base itself: it's pretty weak unless you're in the market for exclusive kits. Retail selection is VERY limited, MG selection was wiped out. As for exclusives, they had ample amounts, but a lot of the displayed exclusives weren't available. Which sucked because I missed the Psycho Doga and Hobby Hi-Zack on their initial runs. That said, prices were definitely high. 3 HGs and a GQX pen nearly ran me 100 bucks. They had the card game stuff too but I was pretty tired out. They had TVs playing clips and the openings playing over the PA system, but otherwise it's a pretty mid experience. If you're out in Chicago, unless you want exclusive kits, just go to the Hobbytown in Orland Park.
>>23787851The round edge is just a thing in every Bandai kit, they never go away. But i bet it will still look better if it has better part separation. That thing is literally a clamshell, every surface detail is molded as a single piece.

How do you topcoat larger kits? Still by limb like an RG/HG?
>>23787825They messed up so hard that people begged for the real Zoltan Stein. The Ver.Ka fixed so many problems the original Stein had, including making the emblems separate pieces.
>>23787891Narrative stuff doesn't have that much fans, but Stein is a cool design and people like it enough to gloss over the fact that its pilot is a mustache twirling villain.
>>23787872>dougram with a turret head
>>23787891The most hillarious thing about Ver OVA Stein is that the shield doesn't have any sculpt for the emblem so you can't even paint it, you will have to use sticker lol.

If cemented seam is still glossy, does it mean it hasn't not fully dried yet or it's just texture change from melting the plastic? It's been sitting overnight. My first time using cement.
>>23787882yeah, arguably even more important to do so for larger kits>>23787908>>23787911>>23787917depends on the plastic but some colors like blue just stress very easily no matter what steps you take unfortunatelyi do find using a slower, gradual cutting action for the final flush cut can help minimize it>>23787935>overnightthey're probably dried , it's normal that they stay glossyit's time to sand and hopefully you applied enough cement - you want excess to be flowing out of the seam so it melds them together
>>23787790The ABS version liked to snap and everyone hated it.
fucking hell why is ABS so fragile with paints anyway?
>>23787980it's a compound plastic made by taking a butadiene which is kinda rubbery, and changing its hardness and melting point with polystyrene and acrylonitrile. it's designed to be basically ideal for injection molding and can be melted and solidified over and over without any harm, but its components are all completely different kinds of plastic with different chemical weaknesses and any chemical that damages any of them will ruin the ABS.
>>23787983>compoundno wonder. it'll catalyze at the slightest pooling. guess I won't be able to topcoat ABS kits normally with lacquer without doing piece by piece.
>>23787906at least you can use the sticker as a stencil
>>23787965>it's time to sand and hopefully you applied enough cement - you want excess to be flowing out of the seam so it melds them togetherThe parts were springing back a little so they kinda slurped up the pushed out melted plastic when released but there doesn't seem to be any open gaps when held to a light source. If there are some gaps I guess it would be a good excuse to make some sprue goo, I intended that kit to be a crash course where I try as many different tools and techniques as possible.

>>23785868And another finished project. >>23788175Clean your lens
>>23788126I have one on my shelf now. I've never had that issue. The reason they changed the material is because the steins were "new" kits and nearly all new kits use PS by default. Are you confusing it with the RG? Because that sounds like RG issues.
>>23788166>the safety flagThe what now?
>>23788179The mist turns up as part of the kit's qi (aura).
>>23788197See that little square at the end of the v fin? That's a safety flag. You snip those off and do some careful sanding so the end is nice and sharp.
>>23788192So many people had that issue that they used PS for every sinanju since. The stuff costs more than ABS and they made the change because of that peg. ABS is too brittle to be a single point holding all that weight.
I'm bored. New announcements when?
>>23788202I never knew that...I thought that was meant to be that way...
>>23788236PGU Leo announced
>>23788203>The stuff costs more than ABS and they made the change because of that peg. ABS is too brittle to be a single point holding all that weight. You are talking out of your ass. ABS is the durable material and PS is the brittle ones. The stuff Bandai uses for their modern kits eversince Sinanju OVA MG is their own private material called "KPS" with higher tolerance than regular PS. Sinanju Ver Ka's waist problem was a fitment issue, the peg was too tight and breaks when you use your fat hands to rotate it.
>>23788130Why would you ever overpay for these instead of just using a dab of super glue, I never understood
>>23788263At least you're admitting it's a problem now. PS is more flexible so it's less likely to break. That's why they use it. It wasn't a fitment issue because the PS peg doesn't break anymore. It was a material issue. You are demanding they make the kit strictly worse after they already fixed it.
>>23788277ABS is more flexible than PS. Try to snap a runner of ABS and it will bend a PS runner will snap.
>>23788295Then why doesn't the PS peg snap when the ABS one did?
HG Zock ver.Gyou
>>23788277>It wasn't a fitment issue because the PS peg doesn't break anymore. It breaks even easier if you didn't sand it before assembly and it was a fitment issue because even in OVA version, the peg gets jammed easily.
>>23788252No, PGU Talgesse. That way you can just remove some parts and you have a PGU Leo underneath. 2 for the price of one!
>>23788309But it doesn't break. It has to be a tight fit because the upper half is really heavy. How is ABS both more rigid and more flexible? You've claimed both now. Why doesn't the PS peg snap but the ABS one snapped so often that it became a big enough issue to warrant a material change in every later version?
>>23788296Sinanju's KPS does snap when you rotate it. The plastic is softer and loosen so it doesn't eat shit immediately. Doesn't change the fact that KPS is still the weaker material. >>23788295To be fair, KPS is not that bad for a PS derivative. The durability is still quite weak compares to high quality ABS though.
>>23788311>But it doesn't breakIt does.
>>23788334Comparing KPS to gutter ABS from the Changs. Gutter ABS wins.
>>23788076lol
>>23788167Where is that one? Mine has the exact same stock in the exact same places.
>>23788334So somehow ABS is both softer and harder again?>>23788335I have never heard of anyone breaking the peg on a new sinanju.
>>23788351It's softer so it creates more friction when you rotate a join. That's why the join broke. PS and KPS is more smooth so less force is exercised on the peg during a rotation. Also ABS will melt like cheese when you use a ultrasonic knife on it, PS will cut like butter. So yes ABS is more flexible.
>>23788356Is this why the ABS version would constantly snap and why the PS version does not?
>>23788359Yes the ABS part would twist during the rotation because it's too "sticky". Sanding it out solved the issue.
>>23788362So it was a worse material for the joint?
All I know is that I got a bottle of tamiya abs cement with the blue cap because my normal glue don't work. Otherwise, if I paint it I just blast it with the same primer rattlecan I have at hand for the rest of the parts. Never had any brittle material problems or other abs spooky thing happen.
>>23788389>he fell for the tamiya meme and hobby cement memejust buy a bottle of 99.9% mek lmao, it works on both abs and ps and a litre costs as much as 40ml of hobby cement

>>23788707It's honestly mindblowing to me just how much they have downsized compared to how much shit they used to release. Thank god for other companies and the chinks picking up the slack.
>>23788718It's because they're expected to also keep making everything they've ever made too. People flip shit if they go a few years without printing something. They're stretched really thin.
>>23788742Isn't that literally why they built that second factory? The fuck are they printing from there if the Gunpla catalog still has hundreds of kits still in reprint limbo?
>>23788755All the stuff people have been demanding they reprint. This year is a really good one for people who have been waiting a long time for a reprint.
>>23785866I've read the guide , but I'm still a bit confused, what's a good starting semi gloss top coat to use?
>>23788759I've been waiting on a MG turn X and (non coated) star build strike reprint for a while. I'm still waiting. I do agree that most of the in demand stuff gets reprinted frequently though.
>>23788742They are not expected to make everything they've ever made ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Everyone perfectly understands why they have a rotating schedule of kits that get made, and get time with the injection machines. That's a bad argument as to why new releases have slowed dramatically, and why we get like 1-2 new MG's a year if we're lucky. We also haven't gotten a new regular PG since 2020, and they massive jacked up the price for the PGU Nu. I'm not even sure we ARE getting anything this year with a fresh mould. FA ZZ is essentially just a recolor. The actual truth is that Bandai made some GENERATIONALLY terrible massive investments at the same time the entire global economy was shitting the bed during covid. They still haven't recovered, and won't recover for a long time from it. They don't have the war chest to afford the intensive engineering work needed to support the same level of retail releases they used to do. Frankly, it's a miracle the entire plamo branch of the company hasn't been shuttered at this point.
>>23788785>I've been waiting on a MG turn xwell you're gonna keep waiting because all the US stores already got theirs. idk what the hell you're doing
>>23788786They can't shutter the plamo branch because it's basically hard carrying the company. It's the core of the business, even with their downsizing.

>>23788878Also that 1/87 scale is really making the kit larger. It's making the PGU RX-78 look small. I would love this base though for the PGU, still haven't found a reasonable base for him yet.
Any tips for lining this sort of surface?I've only used markers but I'd be interested in trying a panel wash of some sort.
>>23788883Panel washes are definitely the way to go, whether that means an actual wash or some sort of liner fluid.
>>23788883I was thinking of doing a wash on the X-Wing I picked up recently. I think I'm going to wipe it clean with a enamel thinnered cloth and not worry about it being too clean. Star Wars shit is supposed to look dirty/worn.

Hello! I came to this board and gen, cause im looking to get into Gunpla. I've watched videos and whatnot, but I know you guys will be mean and give me the real deal. I want to start off with my favorite gundam, the Dragon Gundam from G. What should I prepare for, and any tips you guys have would be great.
>>23789219Well, for starters, that thing is P-Bandai exclusive unless you buy one of the ancient original kits from the 90's. So unless you live in Southeast Asia, you probably won't be able to get ahold of one or you'll pay an arm and a leg for the privilege. That being said, there are a few guides and tutorials in the OP, so start there for the basics. But my suggestion for you is, for your very first Gunpla, you'll want something cheap and readily available to cut your teeth on. It's virtually guaranteed that you'll make mistakes your first time, so you may as well do it on a kit that you're not going to regret damaging and ruining. For that purpose, a HG or EG kit will serve well.
>>23789221It's literally in stock right now on their official website https://p-bandai.com/us/item/F2723584003
>>23789226>my insane ass actually considering a $400 Quattro jacketWhy am I like this?
>>23789221Yeah it seems this newer version is P-Ban dai only but the price isnt that bad. I guess shipping and waiting will be the only issue. I read the that HG is a good starting point as well. I was looking into those 30MF but it seems those are popular and hard to obtain. I dont plan on having a huge collection, which is why I wanted to start with that one. My ideal is to have an Escaflowne, Patlabor, Heavy Arms, and Dragon Gundam for now. Thank you anon!
>>23789229Because it looks good to be honest
>>23789229Just buy a generic jacket and order some custom patches, it'll be cheaper and probably higher in quality
>>23789230HG kits in general are a good starting point, because they're comparatively cheap and plentiful, especially if you live in the US and have a Hobby Lobby in your area you can go to during their 40% off boxed model kits week (they do this every other week). Again, if it's your first time you may want to practice on something that you won't regret fucking up. People tend to treat P-Bandai kits with delicacy because of the expense and wait times on shipping, if you irreparably fuck one up then it's a pain in the ass to buy another one.
>>23789233I'm not ordering a custom patch that says BAJEENA.
>>23789237Then you don't deserve any Quattro merch at all
i didnt know there are already bootleg gcucks kits
>>23789239
>>23789234I gotcha, I do have a hobby lobby near me actually. I might pop in and see if they have anything that looks cool and I can take a crack at. In the meantime I still want my Dragon Gundam just to have in the box for now. Thank you Anon!

Best tools for cleaning plastic dust and shavings stuck to the parts? Was hoping that toothbrush would do the trick but it just moves it around instead of brushing it off.
>>23789289have you tried a brush
>>23789291If not a paint brush then makeup brushes like an eyeshadow or blush brush would work. You can get them cheap at drugstores.
>>23789289airbrush with no paint in it connected to a compressor that's turned on
>>23789298btw, you need to engage the trigger so air would shoot out of the airbrush and you have to point the jet of air at the dust and try to blow it off with the air
TIL waterbased metallics with a blower is so beginner friendly and less headache -inducing than airbrushing acrylics.

The fixed pose non-holding hand are really nice with both and outstretched and a pointing hand. Also the arms can barely hold these blades up. I tried another angle and they kept drooping. Really could have used a ratchet or lock mechanism in the shoulder, but that might interfere with the transformation. >another bandairager melty
>>23789882Who are you mad at?
>>23789882Welcome to plastic models, yes even gunpla has mold lines. Might I interest you in a scraper or perhaps some sandpaper?
>>23789882Bandai does a good QA job on their molds, so when they are new they have very little mold lines. Bandai also does a decent job with where they position the runner/parts in relation to where the mold line is (ie most of the parts already 99% on one half of the mold). They also sometimes put the mold lines on panel line spots (similar to how you hide seamlines). When a kit is reprinted a ton, you do start to notice mold lines more. I've even had flash on some old SEED kits I bought a recent reprint of. Warhammer also has the issue that they make very small models, and then gave people stare at them extremely close for hours as they paint tiny details. Those people are going to notice even slight mold lines way more.
>>23789904James Workshop. Now answer the question. >>23789882>>23789919Bandai have invested shitloads of money into their plastic injection process over the years, they're head and shoulders above all the competition because they dare to innovate and improve. You could say that back in the 90's their NG 1/144 kits would be about "equal" to the competition, but unlike ship/tank/jet model kits that you would have to sand/putty/cement together, Gunpla is engineered to have moving joint parts. It isn't just GW that's behind, but lots of other "reputable" kit makers including Revell, Academy, and so on, are just following the standards that they've been comfortable with for decades, because nobody's actually challenged them to do better. The combination of GW charging more for their proprietary plastic pieces than precious metals on a per-weight basis, people smartening up due to the internet and social media, and the proliferation of 3D printing, is finally opening up people's eyes to just how much model kit makers have stagnated. That's basically the whole reason why Bandai have moved into the tabletop realm in recent years, because they know that they can beat James at their own game now that their IP has major global recognition.
