Does Char deserve to be as popular as he is when he doesn't do anything?
>american fails to understand why a character is popular for the nth time
>>23800496I still don't get why americans have such an autistic rage for him and SEED.
>>23800498SEED is pretty shit tbf
>>23800498I don't think Americans actually hate Char, they just like to point out the inconsistencies in his character. Primarily, he's not a very good "ace" pilot, and his character/motivations hit the shitter between Zeta and CCA. He's a good villain, but he's also flawed in ways that generally can't be ignored. Non-Tomino works like The Origin also tend to try to "fix" those flaws but end up feeling like fanfiction because they aren't done well.As for Seed, it mainly comes down to Americans hating teen angst drama, and hating pretty boy protagonists. It also doesn't help that Seed is very blatantly written to pander to the Japanese.
>>23800499naw what's shit is coming out of your butt
>>23800495>doesn't do anythingBeing the eye-candy is not an easy task
>>23800538True
>>23800518>between Zeta and CCANopeFirst of all, Char having a heel turn was always very plausible. He simply isn't convincingly heroic at any point. The fact that the Titans are, like, the ultimate Oldtypes (and yes, abusing Newtypes for military purposes is an Oldtype trait) makes Char's opposition to them natural. But he personally is never truly heroic.Second of all, he has that moment in Zeta's second opening showing his dark secrecy.Thirdly, he legitimately cannot offer up any real path for humanity in the theatre scene. All he can really say is "move everyone to space, trust in the next generation to be less shit, and wait for everyone to become Newtypes". It's empty. Becuase he straight up has no idea how to build a brighter future.Fourthly, whenever Char talks about wanting to create a better future, it's always that he wants to make things better for humanity overall. Not any specific person he cares about, but all of humanity. Very utilitarian, very messiah-complex, not actually a good guy way of thinking.Fifthly, they just fucking outright tell you at the end of Zeta that Char has changed to a new person by the end, with the camera shot of the wrecked Hyaku Shiki and the open cockpit - it's an obvious chrysalis metaphor, he has emerged a different man after AEUG have been de facto destroyed as a political force, now just being attack dogs of the Federation. So, it's all set up very clearly in Zeta if you're paying attention.
>>23800518You literally don't understand Char or his popularity.
Char likes little girls that can be mommies so he's alright in my book
>>23800582>The fact that the Titans are, like, the ultimate Oldtypes (and yes, abusing Newtypes for military purposes is an Oldtype trait) makes Char's opposition to them naturalAnd Neo Zeon, which is not only doing the same thing but also being led by one of the people he hates most in the world is something he naturally ignores while the team (who he dragged into this mess btw) continues on?
>>23800757Neo Zeon in Zeta is a problem Char himself created.
>>23800774Obviously, but it was also a problem he was motivated to fix.
>>23800496Americans love char.
>>23800495He is there to look pretty and spout philosophical one liners.
>>23800518>Zeta and CCABuy nip books. this is set up in the script in 0079 but didn't make the cut for cel painting
>>23800495Does heroism in Japan never come across as self concious ? Like in the west men in tights are laughable but in Japan its too sacred. So I feel I cant enjoy gundam. Char is better.
>>23800757>one of the people he hates most in the worldChar you don't have to be that mean with Haman just because you dropped her underage ass in Axis
>>23800495He stood up for spacenoids is what he did. He was a great newtype advocate and on this board Char is a hero. End of story.
>>23800495Yes times 3.
>>23800495It's not that Char is too popular, but that Japan has failed to create another Gundam character as iconic as him. I don't know if this due to Japanese writers being failures or some other reason, but Japan should be ashamed they haven't made more iconic and popular gundam characters.
yeah Char's pretty cool
>>23801014>He is there to look pretty and spout philosophical one liners. How do I get a Char
>>23800495char is my favorite character in fiction, because basically anything positive you can think to say about him (how good of a pilot he is, how cool he is, how suave he can be, his philosophical side) is so obviously a poorly-constructed facade concealing a deeply emotionally crippled man whose narcissistic desire for blind furious vengeance, combined with his utter inability to form and maintain any sort of meaningful connection with the people who trust and love him is honestly just cosmically depressing to watch.he callously sacrifices so much and so many people to feel just as empty inside as always. i don't even know what he would do for fun, i can't imagine him reading a book or watching tv, i bet he just sits in the dark in his bunk staring at the wall. that's how broken this guy is.the one thing that anyone might say he's even somewhat competent at, piloting a mobile suit, is just an endless source of frustration. he has a corrosive effect on basically anyone he meaningfully interacts with. he never realizes what he had until after he's lost it. it just all comes off as a very raw and very human portrayal of a lot of anxieties and situations real people go through.char's a fuck up like all of us. he's a reminder that you can seemingly have it all and still squander it, or even worse, spend your life just as confused and aimless and foolish as someone who wasn't lucky enough to have any of it, and die an ignoble death hating yourself for it. i see myself in him, to some degree.
>>23803794This is either a shitpost or written by an autist who genuinely doesn't understand people.
