How does the original Star Blazers anime compare with remake? The main thing I've noticed so far is that they forgot to color the aliens blue. Other than that they seem pretty similar. Also are the sequels like Yamato 2202 any good? I've only seen 2199.

There are fairly significant changes after they leave the solar system. The original also feels very much like a product of its era, but its still pretty good and it and 2199 seems like an updated take on the same idea rather than anything too different. If you like one, you'll probably like the other unless you really hate 70s Leiji for some reason.
2199's movie's fine. 2202 felt weirdly spiteful, to the point that I never finished it and didn't bother checking out anything later.
