I just read Mazinger, Great, and Grendizer along with the Mazinkaiser OVAs. Aside from some moments in the Great manga, he kinda just gets beat up a lot. Is Great supposed to feel like an underdog?

I'm 20 episodes into Great Mazinger and it doesn't really feel like Tetsuya gets challenged. They'll go through the motions having his attacks fail, maybe some battle damage, but there hasn't been a moment like what repeatedly happened in Z where the monster of the week highlights a major problem with Z's toolkit that Koji had to struggle against until an upgrade could get made that would put the mech back on even ground. Great Mazinger feels fully equipped for everything from the start, and Venus doesn't feel like it contributes much or is needed in most episodes; Aphrodite may have gotten beaten by the monster in most episodes but it was oftentimes in situations where either Mazinger or Koji couldn't launch, or Mazinger had already been put out of commission temporarily and someone needs to hold the line. Venus seems to launch without Great, even in situations when Great could launch, just to fill time, and when Great solos this week's battle beast it just adds to the feeling that Tetsuya is too good for the fights to be compelling.Based on OP's contrary observatioj I'm hoping he has more skin-of-the-teeth struggles in the back half of the show
