Did you like it? I finally took the time to finish it and have mixed feelings. As a story I liked most of it but it had a big problem of prequel-itis and making things that happened in 0079 happen before that. And making char a complete psychopathAt minimum, it felt different enough from the original gundam I can view it as it's own thing rather than a direct prequel
>>23828779>I can view it as it's own thing rather than a direct prequelBecause that's what it is.
Never watched it but is THIS why people keep calling Char a manchild? because it's actually astonishing how people can interpret Char from the trilogy (sorta lol since he wasn't in ZZ) as a completely different interpretation as my own. Like some people say he doesn't even care about newtypes and I'm like what the fuck are you talking about.
>>23828779I introduced Gundam to someone last year with the Origin OVA and the MSG trilogy movies. They were interested in watching UC but were never going to be big on the lore or anything, so any inconsistencies weren't going to be a big deal. While MSG treats the Zabis as rarely seen villains that Amuro (or even Char) never interact with much (not a negative, just that there's no normal reason for them to ever meet), they appreciated Origin for exploring the "other side" of the characters and factions that MSG didn't go into.
Story-wise, I appreciate it as "the story of Char as told by Quattro".In general, it's cool to see some of these things and some of the animation is really pretty. There's a fleet battle in one of the later episodes with a moment where you see the internal missile loaders of a Salamis (I think) that's quite neat.
>>23828779Barring a literal handful of things (showing how armour can partially protect against beams and Gopp being relevant) it's rather heinous and has done horrific damage to the fanbase.
>>23828779its shit
Garma is a gay little bitch but in a good way, I think it explained his callousness against earthnoids in a way that kept him sympathetic.
>>23828788This. its AUC. Bandai is just afraid to do the actual Origin books so it keeps flirting with the idea
>>23828779Well it's the prequel part of the Origin manga taken out of context, obviously won't match 0079.
>>23828779I really dislike it. The animation is not that good compared to its predecessor, Unicorn. Character designs are very round-ish and unappealing. The fact there is significant portion of fanbase that not only likes the look of this OVA and actually want the full adaptation of the manga in this style, repulses me to the core. I will take 0079 jank over this any day of the week.Writing is so fucking dogshit. They had such a good premise and they completely squandered it. Making Zeon Deikun into some bumbling fool cause Yas doesn't like Newtypes was such a misstep. Char's childhood is so sad and full of suffering but he barely speaks or gives any meaningful thoughts about it. He feels like a non character. He barely has any internal monologue and just seems less intellectual than 0079-Z-CCA and GQX counterpart.Changing Haro into a mass produced toy instead of it being something Amuro made is an unforgivable sin. Lalah's backstory was changed too, Dozle and Garma are bumbling idiots, Kycilia may have assassinated Sasro, Kai is a delinquent, Fraw already knows the orphan trio and Mirai's family helped Char and Sayla etc.Origin is a case study on how to not write a prequel. At least Hamon was hot, the Loum fight was great and the scene of poison gas and colony drop was executed well.
>>23829943I have the origin books, They make Bright into a goofy fucker. It plays way more comedically than it needs to.
>>23829980I have seen panels of machine gun Rambo Bright, it's borderline cringey parody. They also aged him up in the manga which completely misses the point of tension between him and Amuro.
>>23829985>machine gun Rambo Bright, it's borderline cringey parody. ...it's literally from a gag manga by Tony Takezaki and I genuinely can't believe that you're that dumb that you thought it was the real deal.
>>23828779I mostly agree with >>23829943 about this. It feels like a teenage fanfiction writer took 0079 and the existing written lore about the OYW era, and thought, "What if Char were the main character?" All of the characters were cartoonishly dramatic, even moreso than 0079, and the entire plot bends around taking all these 0079 characters and rewriting history as if they were making these important contributions in the years leading up to the war. It feels cheesy and cheap and stupid. Like, "Oh, you remember Ramba Ral, that old friendly dude who chased the White Base for a few episodes? Turns out he was a pivotal character in developing Zeon's mobile suits and even worked alongside Dr. Minovsky himself!" Or, "Kai, Hayato and Amuro all actually knew each other before the war and had adventures together, and coincidentally all three survived the attack on their space colony and ended up as the pilots for the White Base's mobile suits!"Like, as a piece of entertainment, it's okay. But I'm glad it isn't considered canon, because the writing was just atrocious.
>>23829943>Changing Haro into a mass produced toy instead of it being something Amuro made is an unforgivable sin. This is an official retcon from the 90s, it's not an Origin thing.
>>23830695>it's literally from a gag manga by Tony Takezakithat's reassuring, at least they are not that far gone. what about stuff like Kai imagining Mirai breastfeeding Bright or the infamous cuck dogeza by Hayato?
>>23830907some obscure lore book does not count, they keep changing stuff from time to time. It is different with Origin, which is animated and positioned as prequel/spinoff. Unicorn is written by hard-core Gundam fans and even they didn't change Haro's history.
>>23830987>Unicorn is written by hard-core Gundam fans and even they didn't change Haro's history.really but the fucking box and the UC version of the rape of nanking wasn't enough to count?
