What did you think of the infamous episode?

the GMs couldn't stop eating shit for breakfast, lunch, and dinner

It's a bit newer looking than the rest of the show and while watching it I was overcome with a sense of deja vu.

The episode itself is perfectly fine, some inconsistent art aside in a few scenes. I personally find it kind of disgusting it was effectively erased from any English home releases. Always made every US release feel a bit incomplete compared to the Japanese versions. I'll probably get dog pilled for even mentioning AI use here, but it would certainly be an appreciated project to use that technology with the Ocean studio's dub cast vocal data to recreate the episode in English.

I thought it wasn't great. Like not offensively bad or anything, but knowing people involved with the show weren't satisfied with it compared to the other eps felt kinda "yeah not surprising"

Just some reasons I wasn't super into it just so anons aren't like "b-but you just think it's bad because you were told to, actually it's a masterpiece":
>there's a whole thing at the beginning with the guy sorta holding some critically injured pilots who crashed on the island captive or whatever (??? I don't remember it too well okay), and then they're gone the next time Amuro's in the area and it's implied they died offscreen I guess? What happened to the bodies? Did the dude just throw them into the sea like he ends up doing with his Zaku? Why doesn't this subject come up again, this show's not shy about showing/talking about death so I would have actually liked to see what happened and not for them to just disappear between scenes
>the kids in the ep are pretty annoying, they're sorta like the White Base kids I guess except uglier and less distinct
>Who's the random teenage girl, she didn't seem to be in the flashback to the kids' parents dying so where/how did she join up?
>They treat the dude killing the kids' parents and taking care of them for that reason like a surprise/twist except I didn't realize it was even supposed to be one until they "revealed" it later. I thought that was the obvious implication of the flashback, which they showed first
>The whole thing about "you're only getting attacked because you walk around in your Zaku like a dumbass" didn't actually seem clear to me? Like it didn't feel like throwing away the MS would guarantee they wouldn't get attacked again, and if they do get attacked then how's he gonna defend them
>honestly the guy and kids come off as pretty shitty for characters we're presumably meant to find sympathetic

One positive
>the island setting was nice and some backgrounds etc. were drawn well

Also: I know they did a movie of it recently that's basically like an extended remake, which I haven't seen. I don't know what its reputation is among fans but I think that at least sounds like it has a chance of being better than the episode, which did feel sort of overstuffed plotwise compared to certain other episodes. I think some of the stuff I complained about could've felt better if given a little more time to play out instead of rushed through in ~25 minutes
>>
Say what you will about the movie but I did like how they included nods to the episode's infamously bad animation by showing that Doan's Zaku is in poor shape from being maintained with limited resources, which is why it looks strange.

Is that a new beam rifle it's holding or did origin redesign the feddie assault rifle?

Origin changes up some weapons, a bunch of them have early and later forms. The beam gun in >>23838079 is supposedly an early version of the GM beam spray gun, but to me it looks more like an infantry sub-machine gun.

And here's the later beam spray gun in Origin, which looks closer to the way 0079 animation version.

It's a really good story that circles back at end of the show with Amuro leaving behind his core fighter. It sucks that the animation wasn't on par with the rest of the series and Tomino has publicly disowned it.
Making it into nearly a 2 hour film was a baffling decision and just stretches out the whole thing to an unnecessary degree. Maybe they should have made it into a 30 minute OVA.

Since when did Zakus skate around on cushions of air like Doms?

>bad animation
That's QUALITY animation.
