The weird part is he's straight up better and there's plenty of evidence to support it. Databook descriptions and what we know about the Astraea from 00P is it existed to prototype tons of weapons for the S1 Gundams and the frame was good enough that the Exia is more or less an optimized Astraea frame to the point frankensteining them together to make the Type F2 is possible. It's the fighter of the group. The Type F alone is said to be comparable to the S1 Gundams in ability, let alone the upgraded F2, The Sadalsuud was meant to test communications, underwater, and especially long-range sensors because it's the Dynames' predecessor and descriptions of it consistently say it wasn't meant to be some top tier combat unit. Yet not only did Fon duck fighting Hixar many times, Hixar keeps up with Fon in the Astraea Type F2 just fine while in the Sadalsuud Type F. Hixar can fight even with Fon in a way inferior machine.

Lacus was in the Infinite Justice's cockpit and probably just let the computer auto-follow jesus before she took over to bring it into the Archangel's hangar. Then EXVS2 did something silly and made Lacus a pilot for a low-cost version of the IJ, so Eternal isn't the first game to make her a pilot, even if she never actually piloted in battle in a proper canon representation of Destiny.

Tiffa sat in the Gundam X's cockpit with Garrod a few times. It's weird that they made her a pilot since she never touched the controls at all. I would have thought that making a "double" pilot with Garrod and Tifa together would have made more sense, but I guess they'd rather keep Tower for girl pilots.

Miorine stole the Aerial early on in the story for a duel and was awful at piloting.
