I finally started watching Gundam, with 0079 No.23838383
I'm a few episodes in and I already see why people love it. The music is VERY 70s but that's far enough in the past that it's retro-charming.

Is it ever explained why exactly Zeon are the bad guys? I hear "colonial war of independence" and generally start humming Yankee Doodle.

Zeon are the "bad guys" because the war is presented from the perspective of Federation fighters. The longer you spend with the franchise the more you will come to realize that there are no good guys.
The first month of conflict saw both sides lose half their respective populations. People are horrified by the indescribable atrocities that had been committed in the name of independence.
