I rewatched this in preparation for tomorrow and I honestly think I keep getting filtered by this movie. Like a lot of the conversations especially between Gigi and Hathaway felt odd. I get that's the point since he's still messed up over Quess but something about the way Gigi talks is just odd. Plus some of the other scenes I don't get. Like him buying that random stuff in the store. Was it to show the different stances people have? How did Hathaway get the Xi Gundam? Did he steal it or did Anaheim give it to him so the feddies would buy more suits? I don't know, I wasn't a huge fan when this movie first came out and on the rewatch I'm still not sold on it.
Part of it is just the Tomino dialogue, CCA and Victory and Turn A and G-Reco all have the same problems. Yes, it's Murase directing and not Tomino because he didn't want to re-enter the mindset he was in when he wrote Hathaway back in '89 (his worst dark depression era that resulted in Victory). But Murase is apparently sticking very close to the source material. It's also one of the bad habits that shows like these tend to have. They throw a bunch of jargon, exposition and dialogue at you that you're not supposed to understand until you've finished watching the whole thing and then go back afterward, or unless you've read the Tomino novels and know what's going to happen already; Murase did this with Witch Hunter Robin too. For example, when they mention Salve Quacker when Hathaway first meets with his compatriots, he's the Federation general who's behind the Mafty movement, and is the reason why Hathaway was able to get the Xi Gundam. You're not supposed to know this from just that one line referencing him in the first movie. And major plot spoiler, he's manipulating Hathaway for a simple power grab, kill all the Federation officials in his way so that he can move up and achieve his own goals.
>>23862630You know what, I'll go ahead and spoon feed you the answers. Gigi is some sort of japanese archetype girl that I'm too American to get. The mysterious-perceptive-beautiful-girl one. The relationship between them is definitely supposed to be stilted, they barely met and shared experiences are two violent terrorist attacks. >storeThe store was him buying souvenirs, including a little necklace for Gigi, which Sleg even comments on. And yes, it's to show normal people and how Hathaway's idealism is disconnected from what people actually need. >AnaheimAnaheim have been arming both sides of the various wars since Gryps. Playing both sides of a war is literally their whole shtick.I'm not going to lie, this was a very easy movie to get. Sunrise isn't making some indecipherable art house cinema, Hathaway is a mass market movie for kids. If you're having trouble getting even basic themes and plot events like this, you might honestly be stupid. I don't mean that maliciously. I'm honestly baffled how a grown man could somehow miss literally everything in the movie despite watching it twice without some kind of learning disability or illiteracy. Have you read a book since highschool?
>>23862671Gigi symbolizes Hathaway's conscience, and his gradual distancing from her is meant to show the audience his gradual descent into villainy.

I get that's the point since he's still messed up over Quess but something about the way Gigi talks is just odd. It's a mix of newtype understanding, tomino dialogue, flirting and hiding one's intentions.Hathaway has to act like he isn't Mafty and Gigi is like yeah you are don't pretend to be retarded. Gigi is a Mafty sympathiser so directly meeting its leader is too thrilling for her. She likes him and is laying it on thick, but Hathaway has 'higher' goals and is not interested (that's how he tries to act at least) cause of Quess so he tries to keep her at bay, cue the sexual tension.>Like him buying that random stuff in the store. Was it to show the different stances people have? They are souvenirs, it's a good excuse to get out of the place he is staying at.>How did Hathaway get the Xi Gundam? Did he steal it or did Anaheim give it to him so the feddies would buy more suits? He got it from Anaheim. They are dealing under the table and supplying both sides like usual.
>>23862630I know for for sure I've watched this but I remember absolutely nothing about it. To be honest, I forgot it even existed until I saw this thread. If it added anything to UC Gundam beyond "here's more UC Gundam", I missed it.
>>23862661>>23862719>>23862731While all that makes sense it just still feels weird the way she talks. Like one minute she's talking like a 28 year old woman and then like mid conversation she just flips to acting like a child >>23862748The only thing I took away from it my first watch when it came out was Gigi was annoying and the mobile suit fights were boring (the fights weren't the point of the movie but you can't make a Gundam movie and have one of the only fights the Gundam is in be boring). As for the story it just bridges the gap between middle and late UC
>>23862630It's basically a spy movie, they're not necessarily talking in riddles, it's more just feeding information to you the viewer. I remember feeling like the subs were off in a few spots, which might be why it feels weird.I just came out of the cinema for the new movie, and it's pretty good, but it's also similar in presentation conversationally. I recommend at least having a basic grasp of Japanese to get the best experience.
Did we need another thread for this

If there were mobile suit fights in the story, they've left no trace on memory whatsoever.
