I don't get the appeal.
How come G Gundam is everyone's favorite?
>>
Watch it and find out.
>>
>>23871565
it isn't everyone's favourite, but a lot of people like it because it doesn't take itself seriously. it's WWE with mechs. everything is silly. there's a horse that pilots a unicorn mech, there's a mech that transforms into a windmill to hide amongst the windmills, egypt has a "mummy gundam" piloted by a zombie. it's just good, campy fun.
>>
>>23871579
It takes itself deadly seriously, and that's why it's so fun. Not once does it display an ounce of self-awareness and point and laugh at the ridiculous bullshit it presents you with, it treats it all like it's supposed to be normal.
>>
>>23871604
i mean that the creators were obviously having fun with it and trying to make things silly. just because it is played straight does not mean it is taking itself seriously. something like nolan's batman is something that is taking a stupid concept and taking it seriously. a world where the galactic election is decided by a wrestling match between giant robots on an earth surrounded by a giant wrestling ring is absolutely not something that takes itself seriously, regardless of if the characters don't wink and nudge at the audience of ludicrous nature of things.
>>
It's Imagawa's finger to all those edgy autists that worship overrated shit like Zeta Gundam like the best thing ever happened to mankind. And it was Tomino himself that gave him the blessing to make that, because you know, Tomino fucking hates the gundam audience. Of course it's good

My favorite Gundam is Zeta and G is the only AU I can stand. G Gundam is just FUN. It's just good old fashioned FUN.
>>
It's awesome. I have always loved old Shaw Bros kung fu movies and G Gundam is probably the best translation of them to anime of all time.
>>
>>23871565
It's simple: G Gundam is fun. Do you hate fun?
>>
Has the best and comfiest endings.

The dub is fantastic too I love Domon's voice so much

I'm currently halfway in to watching G Gundam. Shouldn't Master Asia's new tag line be the Defeated of the East.

Because it is normal, also normal for colonies to be shaped like your nation or as a national monument.

I like Hong Kong martial arts movies
>>
It's a nice little show that's definitely a fun watch but I don't think it's the best Gundam or best mech anime of this type. Still really worth a watch for...pretty much everyone IMO.

Something I think people don't mention about this show enough besides the whole "crazy premise but plays it totally straight" is that there's a really melancholic and bittersweet undercurrent to all of it. There's a good few episodes focusing on topics like sickness, aging, lost love, etc. Like Tequilla Gundam is such a goofy meme but it gets one of the most bittersweet episodes of the series with the dying childhood friend gf. If I had to describe the show in a way other than Wuxia Gundam or Super Robot Gundam, it'd probably be "Fairy Tale Gundam"
>>
>>23871565
Because it's fucking fun.
>>
>>23875425
You can find character drama in any show, of course people are going to talk most about what makes G Gundam unique
>>

I like when robots punch each other
>>
>>23871565
Watch some wuxia
>>
>>23875278
I don't get why the guy who made the screencap named it that way; still, Wing Gundam made its debut in G Gundam. It's the first and last time a new AU cameoed in another AU
>>
Only G Gundam, you get Zeta Gundam, F91, Wing, and Zambot 3 fighting together to fight a giant monster Gundam.
>>
>>23871604
bro needs a fucking laughtrack
>>
>>23875453
I think it's kind of key to the vibe of the series though. It's very classically "romantic" in a way that plays into the fantastical elements of the series.
>>
>>23871604
This is correct.
For some reason shit like Code Geass and Valverave skewed the meaning of
>doesn't take itself seriously
around these parts.
>>
>>23875514
>>23875516
Impressive how it managed to change its color registering in the middle of battle.
>>
>>23871604
>>23875670
Modern audiences seem to have lost sight/ forgotten the idea of 'camp' or something along the line. A lot of older movies, particularly old HK martial films tend to be very over the top and ridiculous in concept, but as said, that's just how the story's verse function and the actors, writers etc take them seriously and play it straight. It's part of the charm.
>>
>>23871565
Because it aired on Toonami in 2002 and for many basedlennials, either that or Gundam Wing was their first (and probably only) Gundam show.
>>
I don't like G Gundam personally. It and Wing are probably the ones I enjoy the least, but Wing has a lot of great designs. G is just too silly with most for me. And it screams power of friendship and whatever. Too shounen like. Like Naruto or obcitously Dragonball. Not my thing

But /m/ hates Gundam and G Gundam is the least Gundam of any Gundam series.
That's why it's so well liked here.

>>
>>23875425
It plays the setting straight but it also doesn't forget it's Gundam. The setting kinda sucks if you're not a Gundam Fighter or live in the Colonies
>>
If you don't inherently get the appeal of something no amount of another person "explaining" it to you will make it click. Just move on.
>>
>>23876903
Tomino's opinions don't matter.
>>
>>23876873
>G Gundam is the least Gundam of any Gundam series.
It's like you've never seen anything SD Gundam related or the Build series

You're not wrong though, I have zero interest in Gundam and never watched any UC Gundam
>>
>>23876995
SD is okay and I have seen a bit of the Build series. G Gundam just feels like it's doing too much for me. Just not my thing.
>>
>>23876903
Is there something all those characters share in common aside from being anime characters?

Buster Rifle would be busted in G-Gundam. Not even the Wing Gundam itself, that thing was a piece of shit. But the Buster Rifle would probably be banned from the Gundam Fight.

Is this still about the horrors of war? I see like a flying lobster or some shit
>>
>>23883353
The horrors of war are contained in an electron system that's also a planet-sized tournament, since it was the only option for putting an end to the Earth Chaos War. Future Century timeline was pretty wild before the Gundam Fight became the norm.

>>
>>23883353
>>23883376
even just having the giant robot death match shit is STILL wrecking the environment/cities, so it's far from perfect
>>
>>23883353
G's general premise is that humanity has eliminated/contained the problem of war by moving the entire population to space, and every four years a combat tournament is held on Earth with the winning nation becoming the ruling nation of humanity for that term

It of course be comes clear that this isn't entirely a clean system, and there are drawbacks to it that have been overlooked that form the basis of some of the antagonists motivations

>>23883391
That's basically the summarized reason for Master Asia desire to end humanity because he saw the writing on the Wall and saw the major flaws in the Gundam Fight. Domon was starting to see it too, but like Amuro, he wants to put faith in humanity for future generations to find another answer then destroying the world to avoid war betwen earth and space.
>>
>>23876873
G is far more attuned with the ethos of Gundam than pretty much anything the franchise has produced in the 21st century.
>>
>>23871565
G has lots of shitty episodes but it was overall a fine show.
Americans loved it because it was similar to Dragon Ball, and everyone loved DB in the 90s
>>
>>23883721
If you mean the ethos of selling colorful plastic robot toys to children while manchildren fool themselves into thinking its deep and meaningful, then yes.

it turns gundam into a super robot show and its hype as hell, there's no point of arguing what gundam universe is the strongest when you have to fight the Windmill gundam or an old man that knows kungfu that can stop mobile suits by him self on foot., it's raw sillyness to the point it's funny so you can enjoy the ride.

It's not surprising if you consider it' them pumping the brakes when UC didn't sell as Japan expected it to. They have a stark realization that, come 2002, there's really nothing they have that doesn't requite at least early UC to make sense of. I suspect the reason X wasn't used was due to it using UC as a basis of the backstory. Turn A also had the non-traditional design and probably would've had to deal with a lot of censorship. Both underperformed too, but I think that wasn't the only faactor.

G and the SD show was basically "Kids don't get the politics/like old animation, we have to get something else." G was leaning to the shonen audience. SD was frankly just hedging bets that if nothing else they could sell the mecha designs to little kids.
Around...02-04? Or so, Bandai America seemed to lean in on Char's counterattack in the US, I'm sure part of it was due to reused MSiA toys from Japan, but pushing CCA seemed like an attempted to salvage the stalling UC marketing. CCA's designs are more in line with modern Gundam of the time and more traditionally cool. They seemed to have ambitious plans for Seed that quickly got cut by retailers not wanting stock and CN all but abandoning the show. Seed was effectively a way to modernize traditional Gundam to new markets, and it worked well in places with America being a huge exception at the time.
>>
>>23893526
Maybe they figured everyone needed a break from heavy war dramas.
>>
>>23883775
I kind of agree. I rewatched it a year ago and it was worse than I remembered but still good. The problem is that a lot of the one off episodes actually weren't that interesting. It was very entertaining when the actual plot was happening though, it's one of those shows that makes me wish 3 cour shows were more common. It didn't need an entire 50 episodes but 24 would have been too little.

Am I the only one who was disappointed with the actual fights?
I enjoyed the tournament-oriented plot and how this was basically Gundams doing martial arts, but the actual battles were rather static and action was sparse.
Fights feel like they start and end in an instant, as soon as G Gundam does his special god fist attack
>>
>>23895323
They didn't use Gundam X because there was no action figures of X in the pipeline. All the MSIA stuff was re-packaged/recolored releases for outside Japan, which obviously was pretty much just UC at that point. Big box retailers like ToysrUs were wanting additional Gundam merchandise (read as "WE DON'T WANT NON GUNDAMS, THESE CYCLOPS THINGIES CLOG SHELVES) in addition to the model kits to justify Bandai's shelf-real estate.
>>
>>23883775
Bro most people in America did not watch DB, they watched DBZ because while DBZ was on US TV in1996, Toei/Funimation didn't release original Dragon Ball until 2001 in the U.S. If you were American and watched Dragon Ball, it's because your ethnicity was Asian or from Mexico and you had access to localized ethnic programming which was showing Dragon Ball.
